Spangler started the season 7-2 and was ranked in the top-five of his weight class. His strong start earned him the top seed at the Midlands Championships. At the Midlands, he suffered a concussion in his second match that has knocked him out of competition for almost two months. The concussion left him unable to do any physical activity for three-and-a-half weeks. Spangler faced adversity head on and had a tough task in front of him to get back into shape for his return to the mat. NC State improved to 7-9 overall and picked up its first win in ACC play. Duke fell to 3-9 overall and remained winless in ACC play, while Ohio dropped to 4-7. The format for the matches on Friday was unique in the sense that Wolfpack wrestlers were competing on two different mats simultaneously. On mat 1, NC State was wrestling against Ohio and started at the 125-pound weight class. On mat 2, the Pack squared off against conference for Duke starting at 165 pounds.
