Lewiston, Maine (June 18, 2012) – New England Fights! (NEF) stormed into the Androscoggin Bank Colisee on Saturday night, June 16, for its third event and its second at the arena that once hosted the infamous Muhammed Ali-Sonny Liston World Heavyweight Title rematch. In the main event of the evening, before a rabid crowd of nearly 3,000 fans, former two-time UFC World Heavyweight Champion Tim “The Maine-iac” Sylvia (31-7) defeated Randy “The Wolf” Smith (14-11-1) and it took him just thirteen seconds to do so.
“I’m looking at the top-ten heavyweight rankings in MMA right now,” stated NEF co-owner, general counsel and promoter Nick DiSalvo. “In Tim Sylvia I see a guy who has competed and can still compete at that level. Say what you want about the heavyweight division now compared to a few years ago when he was on top, and I know all the keyboard warriors will s**t all over this, but the way Tim looked the other night was nothing short of a monster. This wasn’t some ‘can’ he pounded in thirteen seconds in Lewiston. Randy Smith has competed at a very high level the last few years in the northeast region of the country, beating some of the best heavyweights around and capturing a series of title belts. Tim’s entrance into the Colisee was one of the most emotional I’ve ever seen. You had 3,000 people on their feet giving Sylvia a standing ovation and chanting his name. ‘Electric’ is the only way I can describe the atmosphere in that arena during the main card.”
And that main card began with what many are calling the “knockout of the century” by Bruce Boyington (3-2), a Taekwondo specialist, who laid waste to Keegan Hornstra (0-4) with a spinning back kick to the head that sent the crowd of 3,000 into a frenzy.
“We have become a promotion known for having fights with the most exciting finishes,” said NEF co-owner and matchmaker Matt Peterson. “We’ve had lots of highlight-reel knockouts and some great finishes on this card. This one really took the cake though. I can’t stop watching it. It has to be seen to be believed.”
Highlights from the event are expected to be played on the June 18 edition of “Inside MMA” as HDNet had a crew on-site covering the event. More highlights are also expected to air on the June 21 episode of “MMA Uncensored Live” on Spike TV.
The promotion also announced its return to Lewiston, Maine slated for September 8. That night will feature a headline fight between Jesse Peterson (6-3) and Cody Lightfoot (6-3) at 185 pounds. Both competitors are former Maine state high school wrestling champions. Tickets are already on sale and most of cage-side sold-out within minutes. NEF hopes for another large crowd for Fight Night IV which is being billed as a “night of Maine state title fights.” Tickets can be ordered at TheColisee.com or by calling The Colisee box office at207-783-2009.
