Beavers look to return to Corvallis with two wins on the mats in three days and an above .500 record
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The No. 13/15 ranked Oregon State wrestling team will look to get back to its winning ways with match-ups against No. 25 Air Force and No. 15/20 Wyoming this weekend in the Mountain Time Zone.
OSU carries a 2-3 overall record and a 1-1 mark in conference competition and will first square off against the Falcons of the Air Force Academy, Friday, Jan. 11 at 6pm Pacific Time.
Their second dual of the weekend comes Sunday, Jan. 13 vs. Wyoming in Laramie. That meet takes place at 1p.m Pacific.
“They (Air Force and Wyoming) both have some very good individuals and it is a chance for guys to bounce back,” said Oregon State Head Coach Jim Zalesky. “The best thing is, when you have a setback as a team or as an individual, to get that next opportunity to get on the right track. It doesn’t matter who they are wrestling, I’m just looking for guys to go out and pick up the pace this time of year.”
This will be the Beavers first road dual since their two in two days against Minnesota and North Dakota State in December. OSU is coming off a 19-15 loss at the hands of Boise State in the Border War last weekend in Corvallis.
*MEET NOTESOREGON STATEThe Beavers enter their second full week of dual competition this season, carrying with them a 2-3 mark and a 1-1 record within the Pac-12 Conference. OSU’s most recent contest pitted them against Boise State in the second installment this season of the Border War. In the end the Broncos came away with a 19-15 win and a split of the season series. The last time OSU competed in back-to-back duals during a weekend this season was back on Dec. 8-9, 2012 when they spilt match-ups with No. 2 ranked Minnesota and No. 22 North Dakota. This time around Jim Zalesky’s crew will have a day in between duals to rest and travel.
The Beavers are currently ranked as the 13th best team in the country according to the Intermat and The Open Mat’s most recent poll. D1 College Wrestling has OSU listed as No. 15 in the nation. The Orange and Black boast a total of six wrestlers with national rankings next to their name, with a total of 16 rankings claimed by the group. Five of the six athletes are all ranked within the top 10 in each of the three major polls.
The highest rated wrestler is 141 pounder Mike Mangrum who is listed at fourth by Intermat and The Open Mat and ninth by D1 College Wrestling. Following Mangrum is heavyweight Chad Hanke who is rated fifth in the nation by Intermat and TOM and ninth by D1. Other ranked OSU wrestlers include RJ Pena (157 lbs.) at No. 7/9/10, Scott Sakaguchi (149 lbs.) No. 8/9/9, Taylor Meeks (197 lbs.) No’s. 9/10/10 and 184 pounder Ty Vinson who is rated No. 19 by D1 College Wrestling.
AIR FORCEThe Air Force Falcons enter Friday’s match-up with the Beavers with an overall record of 3-0, having defeated Dakota Wesleyan, Northwestern (Iowa) and Augustana (S.D.) all on Dec. 7 at the Battle for the Planes in Jackson, Minn. The Falcons compete in the Western Wrestling Conference and have finished 11th in the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite and 8th in the Southern Scuffle.
This will be their first dual meet of the 2013 calendar year and first against OSU since 2011. The two teams have met up a total of four times since 1978, with the Beavers taking all four contests. The last time the two schools met in Colorado Springs was also in 2011, with the Orange and Black coming out on top in a 42-3 win. The Academy is currently ranked as the 25th best team in the nation by Intermat. They have a total of three ranked wrestlers, including Josh Martinez (125 lbs.) at No. 10/11/13, Cole VonOhlen (149 lbs.) at No. 4/4/5, Josh Kreimier (157 lbs.) at No. 20. AFA is coached by Iowa alum Joel Sharrat who graduated from the storied program in 1995. He is currently in his seventh year on the bench in Colorado Springs.
WYOMINGThe Wyoming Cowboys are currently ranked as high as No. 15 in The Open Mat and No. 20 in the most recent D1 College Wrestling polls. They carry a 6-2 overall record and a 1-0 mark in Western Wrestling Conference competition. The Cowboys have beaten Boise State, Oklahoma, Utah Valley, San Francisco State, Cal State Bakersfield and Cal Poly and have lost to Nebraska and Oklahoma State. The ‘Pokes have finished in ninth place at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite and fourth place at the Reno Tournament of Champions. Their match-up with Oregon State will be their first against a ranked opponent since their 25-13 victory against Oklahoma on Dec. 7. Wyoming currently has a total of three wrestlers ranked in the top 25 in the nation, which includes Tyler Cox (125 lbs.) at No. 22, Andy McCulley (157 lbs.) No. 12/14 and Alfonso Hernandez (197 lbs.) at No. 4 in all three polls. Oregon State leads the all-time series with the Cowboys 18-7-0 (.720) since their first meeting back in 1960. They last met in 2012, with Wyoming edging the Beavers 23-233 in Corvallis. The last time these two schools met in Wyoming was in 2010, when OSU took the match-up, which was held in Casper, 20-15.
20-WIN CLUBThere currently are just four OSU wrestlers who have 20 or more wins so far during the 2012-13 season. Those select few include 141 pounder Mike Mangrum (24-4), heavyweight Chad Hanke (21-3), 157 pounder RJ Pena (20-3) and 197 pounder Taylor Meeks (20-4). Of those four, Taylor Meeks has the best dual record at 5-0, while Mangrum, Hanke and Pena each carry 4-1 marks. The wrestler with the best tournament record is Mangrum who boasts a 19-3 record, while Hanke is 18-3, followed by Pena (16-2) and Meeks (15-4).

That list includes heavyweight Chad Hanke who’s won six straight dating back to his 5-0 run and individual weight class title at the Midlands Championships in Chicago. Hanke is followed by 141 pounder Mike Mangrum who has won five straight, including four at the Midlands, and Taylor Meeks (197 lbs.) who has come out victorious in three straight matches.
CENTURY MARKEDTwo current Oregon State wrestlers have 100 career wins and those include heavyweight Chad Hanke and 141 pounder Mike Mangrum. Both reached the century mark this season, with Mangrum earning his at the Mike Clock Open in November and Hanke getting his at the Midlands Championships in December. Mangrum currently has a 120-32 record all at 141 lbs., with a total of 31 career pins. Hanke boasts a 101-42 mark with 18 total pins. Hanke has 21 of those wins as a heavyweight and 80 of them in the 197 lb. weight class. The pair are the 20th and 21st wrestlers in program history to reach the 100 win plateau. Next up on the all-time list for Mangrum is former teammate Clayton Jack (2009-12, HWT) who is ninth with 121 wins. Hanke needs just three more wins to
pass Cliff Berger (1981-82, 84-85; 126/134/142) for 19th.
