FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Lewiston, Maine (September 11, 2014) –New England Fights (NEF), America's number-one regional fight promotion, will present its inaugural boxing event on October 11, 2014 at the historic Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston, Maine. It will be the first professional boxing event in Lewiston in more than ten years and the first in the building, famous for the Muhammad Ali-Sonny Liston World Heavyweight Title rematch of May 1965, in close to twenty years. On the fight card, local amateur standout "Boxcar" Willie Carville will make his professional boxing debut.
Carville has not competed in the boxing ring since 2011. Prior to that time, Carville had boxed as an amateur since 1997. He made his debut at the age of 12. With an amateur record of 44-21, Carville is a five-time Northern New England Golden Gloves champion.
"I started amateur boxing in 1997 at age 12, and I won my first fight by split decision," recalled Carville. "From then on, I was hooked. I took some beatings from guys like Stevie Gamache early on in the gym (laughing), but I was persistent and had a great chin. My nose got flat, but my body got stronger and my hands got faster. Pro boxing suits me better than the amateurs. When Joey Gamache used to get ready for big fights, we'd train pro style and basically neglected the amateur style of boxing. It's a dream come true to turn pro on this show. It's an exciting opportunity. I've had opportunities to turn pro before, but now the time is right."
Hailing from nearby Lisbon Falls, Maine, Carville has a great appreciation for the history of boxing in Lewiston. Moreover, he has an appreciation for the growing fight scene and growing fan base in Maine.
"Fighting at the Colisee is epic for me. I've been to NEF MMA fights to see guys like John Raio and the atmosphere is just incredible. The crowd at the Colisee is always so alive. I can't wait to fight in front of those people. Those are real fight fans. Maine's got some good fighters to look out for. Brandon Berry's got an outstanding record, great work ethic and I'm excited about his rise a pro. Josh Parker is a guy I spar with all the time and he's extremely heavy handed. There's a 16 year old amateur named Issac Escobar who the world will know about in a few years, but I think he'll be a world champ someday. He's for real."
Carville spends his days working as a pipefitter for Bath Iron Works (BIW). He is a member of the Pipefitters Union Local 6. Carville has been married to his wife, Brittany, for three years and has three young sons - Gabriel (five), Everett (three) and Emery (four months). He credits much of his success in the sport with the support he has received from his family.
"Everybody in my family knows I've been doing this for a very long time," stated Carville. "When you invest as much into boxing as I have, my family has too. My father is one of my biggest supporters. He's been with me in boxing from the beginning. Can't wait to perform in front of them as a pro fighter."
