Light Heavyweight World Title, plus Caveman’s return As Bellator Returns to Kansas Star Arena Friday, March 21st Live on Spike TV

Vegh vs. Newton Clash; The Caveman Returns To Kansas

Newport Beach, Cailf. (January 16, 2014) – The Bellator Light Heavyweight Title will be settled on Friday, March 21st from the Kansas Star Arena, live on Spike TV. The event will be headlined by the Bellator Light Heavyweight Championship as Attila Vegh defends his belt against “The Hardcore Kid” Emmanuel Newton as well as the opening rounds of the Bellator Lightweight Tournament, including Kansas’s own David “The Caveman” Rickels facing Brazilian Knockout artist Patricy Pitbull.

The event will broadcast live starting at 9 p.m. EST/ 8 p.m. CT on Spike TV.  The preliminary card will be streamed live and free exclusively on Spike.com starting at 6 p.m. CT. Tickets for the event are on sale Friday, January 10th and can be purchased at www.kansasstararena.com or by visiting the Kansas Star Arena Box Office.

After suffering an injury, reigning Bellator Light Heavyweight Champion Attila Vegh is now ready to defend his title and face Bellator Interim Light Heavyweight Champion Emanuel Newton. After a razor close decision and ruthless battle in their previous meeting in 2012, Newton experienced his sole defeat since 2009 after falling to Vegh. Newton is confident that with the adjustment he’s made in his game, this fight will lend a different outcome.

“I’m ready for redemption,” Newton said. “I really wasn’t ready at the time in my career to be a champion. It wasn’t something physically, mentally, and spiritually I was prepared for. I’m a totally different fighter now, and this is my time.  I’m training hard, continuing to grow, and this is it. Now is the time. I’ve got a new contract with Bellator, Bjorn and I are happy, I’m going to be here for a long time and I couldn’t be happier. This is my home, and I’m going to be Champion.”

Putting his title on the line for the first time, Vegh holds an impressive 29-4 professional record and enters the fight with a nine-fight win streak and remains undefeated in the Bellator cage. Vegh plans on ending this fight with Newton as quickly as possible and won’t let anyone get their hands on his championship belt.

“I’m ready to get back into the cage, and defend my belt,” Vegh said. “Even though I won my last fight with Emanuel, I wasn't happy with my performance in my last fight against Emanuel Newton. I was ready but things just didn't go the way I planned. We are both different fighters since then, and it’s going to be a great fight.”

Kansas’s own David Rickels will fight in front of his home town faithful and face Brazilian knockout artist Patricky Pitbull in the Bellator Lightweight Tournament opening round.   After defeating J.J. Ambrose with a brutal knockout from Kansas Star Arena last season, Rickels plans on giving his fans another explosive fight, but will have to get past the heavy hands of Pitbull who has recorded seven victories via knockout.

“I am extremely excited to get back in the cage,” Rickels said. “I like to stay busy in the fight game and Bellator has done that for me. Pitbull is a great opponent for a war, and I am going to teach the Pitbull how to lay down.”

Stepping into the Bellator cage for the first time Rodrigo Cavalheiro will face one of the top submission artists in MMA in the polish phenom Marcin Held. Only 21 years-old and a former Bellator Lightweight Tournament Finalist, Held will look to his previous experiences to take down Cavalheiro on March 21st.

“My biggest advantages over Rodrigo inside the cage will be my ground game and overall professional experience,” Held said. “I am going to make a big statement in this fight. I want to show that I can be dangerous standing and when I submit my opponent.”

After making his Bellator debut against Patrick Cenoble in November, UK native Terry Etim will face Derek Anderson. Etim has his sights set on getting back in the top-five rankings where he was less than two years ago, he will need to hold off Anderson, who maintains an undefeated 10-0 professional record with seven first round finishes.

“I am extremely confident and excited to have the opportunity to be in a tournament,” Anderson said. “I saw Terry’s previous fight and I was unimpressed.”

Rounding out the tournament bracket, Brandon Girtz and Derek Campos will meet for the second time after Campos won via decision at Bellator 96 in June.  Coming off of two first round submission wins, Girtz will count on his submission tactics to defeat Campos and advance in the Toughest Tournament in Sports.

Bellator’s February 28th Card From Santa Ana Star Center Complete: M’Pumbu Battles Attila Vegh for Light Heavyweight World Title, Plus Spectacular Lightweight Semifinals

Newport Beach, CA. (February 18, 2013) – As reigning Bellator MMA Light Heavyweight Champion Christian M’Pumbu prepares to defend his title against dominating Slovakian finisher Attila Vegh on February 28th, nine additional fights have been set as Bellator MMA travels to Albuquerque, New Mexico’s Santa Ana Star Center live on Spike TV.

Tickets for the event are on sale now and range from $25-$90. Tickets can be purchased at ComcastTix.com, Bellator.com or by visiting The Santa Ana Star Center box office. The event will broadcast LIVE starting at 8 p.m. MST on Spike, as well as in Spanish language on mun2. The preliminary card will be streamed LIVE and FREE on Spike.com starting at 6 p.m. MST.

The night will feature the Semifinals of Bellator MMA’s Lightweight Tournament as “The Caveman” David Rickels looks to keep the momentum going with a win over tournament newcomer Jason Fischer, who replaces an injured Tiger Sarnavskiy. With a combined 18-2 record between the two, both veterans are looking to punch their ticket to the Finals and capture their $100,000 Tournament prize.

The other side of the bracket will feature Chicago’s Will Brooks, who brings his spotless 9-0 record to the Bellator cage as he meets Saad Awad, who collected a huge quarterfinal victory with a vicious first round knockout earlier this season. For Brooks, the chance to continue through The Toughest Tournament in Sports and lock up his title shot is the only thing on the 26 year olds mind.

“This is what I’ve been working so hard for my entire career, and I just have to continue on this path and make my mark on the division and Bellator,” Brooks said. “Saad is a tough guy, but with my wrestling base and skills, I know what I have to do to get the win and just continue onto the Finals.”

Longtime Bellator veteran and Arizona native Ed “Wild” West is back and gunning for victory as he takes on Santa Fe’s own Josh Montoya in a bantamweight affair. A fan favorite wherever he fights, West is counting down the days until his Bellator return on February 28th.

“I just want to get back in that cage and remind everyone again what “Wild” West is all about,” West said. “I always like to put on a show, and nothing is going to change on February 28th.”

The night will also feature a collection of preliminary card action full of New Mexcio’s best talent, held in conjunction with Orthrus Promotions. 18-time world boxing champion Holly Holm will make her long awaited Bellator debut as the Albuquerque native will battle Katie Merrill at 135 pounds. Amoussou makes quick work of Baker to win Welterweight Tourney, Vegh and Wiuff now meet after wins at Bellator 72

Daley and Zaromskis victorious in bouts from Tampa

Tampa, FL. (July 20, 2012) — Bellator Fighting Championships made its return to “The Sunshine State” Friday night with the culmination of the Bellator Season 6 Welterweight Tournament as Karl Amoussou became the Bellator Season 6 Welterweight Champion while Attila Vegh and Travis Wiuff will now face off at Bellator 73 to determine the Bellator Summer Series Light Heavyweight Tournament Championship. Also, Paul Daley and Marius Zaromskis picked up impressive victories at Bellator 72 in Tampa, Florida from The USF Sun Dome LIVE on MTV2 and in HD on EPIX.

“Travis Wiuff continues to amaze with another completely dominating performance, while Paul “Semtex” Daley did exactly what we thought he would in his Bellator debut by delivering another brutal knockout,” said Bellator Chairman & CEO Bjorn Rebney. “My hats off to Karl Amoussou, who came out as his usual explosive self and had everyone on their feet with a slick submission win. Amoussou vs. Askren is something I’m looking forward to, and should happen in short order.”

For Bellator welterweights Bryan “The Beast” Baker and Karl “Psycho” Amoussou, a win Friday night would not only earn them the Bellator Season 6 Welterweight Tournament Championship, but also $100,000 and a shot at Bellator Welterweight World Champion, Ben Askren. After briefly exchanging on the feet, Amoussou (16-4-2) swept the leg of Baker (18-4) and rather than taking the back, latched on to the leg of “The Beast.” Baker immediately felt the pain of the inverted heel hook and tapped quickly to halt the bout at 0:56 of the first round.

“I’m really happy right now,” said an emotional Amoussou. “It’s been a lot of hard work, and I’m so happy to be at this point right now.”

When asked about his next challenge, reigning Bellator Welterweight World Champion Ben Askren, Amoussou didn’t hesitate.

“Lay and prayer, it’s time for you to face the Psycho. I think Bellator needs a real exciting champion. Somebody is getting knocked out, and that somebody is going to be him.”

Entering the Bellator cage for the first time Friday night, vicious striker Paul “Semtex” Daley was looking to impress Bellator brass when he met 6-time Bellator veteran, Rudy Bears at the USF Sun Dome. While Bears (14-11) appeared to have some success early on, Daley (30-12-2) ultimately showed why he is considered one of the best knockout artists in MMA. After landing a series of brutal knees to the body of Bears, Daley unloaded with a barrage of punches until the referee was forced to stop the fight at 2:45 of the first round.

“Anybody who trades with me is getting knocked out. Much respect to Rudy Bears for stepping in here with me,” said Daley. “I’m looking to get in the tournament, and I’m going to win it.”

After choking out Zelg Galesic last month in the quarterfinals of the Bellator Summer Series Light Heavyweight Tournament, Attila Vegh was matched up with the toughest test of his career Friday night when he faced Emanuel Newton. Newton (18-7-1), was coming off a submission win of his own over Roy Boughton and looked to stop the momentum of “Pumukli.” The story throughout the fight was the aggressiveness of Newton and the counter striking of Vegh (27-4-2). For three close rounds, both men went blow for blow until a decision was rendered by the judges. Two of the three judges scored the fight in favor of Attila Vegh, who will now move on to the finals of the Bellator Summer Series Light Heavyweight Tournament.

“It was hard to train for the awkwardness he brings. The kicks were coming out of nowhere,” said Vegh. “However, I was confident wherever the fight went. I trained for 15 minutes.”

After earning a decisive victory over Chris Davis in the quarterfinals of the Bellator Summer Series Light Heavyweight Tournament, Travis “Diesel” Wiuff undoubtedly wanted to impose his will on Tim Carpenter when the two met Friday night in a semifinal matchup. For three rounds, Wiuff (68-14) controlled Carpenter (9-2), utilizing his takedowns and landing devastating strikes from the guard. After dominating for the entire fight, Travis Wiuff was awarded the unanimous decision victory.

After the fight, Wiuff had choice words for Bellator Light Heavyweight World Champion, Christian M’Pumbu.
“Christian, I’m coming for you,” said Wiuff. “It’s only a matter of time, Christian. Next time I beat you, I’m taking that belt.”

In the first fight of the evening, Bellator welterweights Waachiim Spiritwolf and Marius Zaromskis were looking to pick up where they left off in their previous contest and finally put a stamp on their epic trilogy. Throughout the fight, Zaromskis (18-6) was the aggressor, constantly moving forward and avoiding the power shots of Spiritwolf (9-11-1). Zaromskis also showed off his improved takedown defense every time Spiritwolf attempted to take the fight to the ground. After the completion of three rounds, two of the three judge’s cageside scored the fight in favor of Marius Zaromskis.
