Malta Boxing Commission Inform The BBBofC They Are To Sanction Twenty Plus UK Events In 2015

Malta Boxing Commission’s (MBC) Managing Director and Vice President Gianluca Di Caro today announced that he has formally written to Mr. Robert Smith, the General Secretary of the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) informing him that due to the success of previous MBC sanctioned events in the United Kingdom, that they have received numerous requests to sanction further events in the UK over the coming year.

The letter, which was also sent to all World Sanctioning organisations and the European Boxing Union (EBU), Mr. Di Caro not only informed the BBBofC of the MBC’s intention to sanction further events in the United Kingdom, but also provided additional information regarding the medical standards and Insurance levels for MBC sanctioned events, which are superior to virtually every other European Country’s, so that the BBBofC would be able to confidently give permission for their license holders to box on MBC sanctioned events in the UK.

Mr. Di Caro also informed the BBBof C that the level of events that they anticipate to sanction over the coming twelve months will be in excess of twenty, seven of which are set to take place before the 1st April, which is an impressive increase in the number of UK events sanctioned by the MBC, as the total of UK events sanctioned by them in 2014 was just five.

The first of the 2015 events is the rescheduled George Hillyard title fight headed show promoted by Shyam Batra, which now takes place at York Hall in London on Friday January 30th.

One week later, on the 6th February, Lee Murtagh promotes his second MBC sanctioned professional boxing event at the Bramley Villager in Leeds.

On the 28th February Malta Boxing Commission will be sanctioning two events, the Stephen Vaughan Jr. promoted double title headed event in Liverpool and a Dave Murphy promoted event in London.

A week later, on the 7th March, Matt Scriven promotes an event in Nottinghamshire and then on the 14th March the MBC team crosses the Irish Sea to sanction a Peter Turley promoted event in Belfast.

The final event of the first seven mentioned is another Lee Murtagh promoted show, this time in Bradford on the 29th March.

Earlier today Mr. Di Caro briefly spoke about the upturn in interest of the MBC within the UK.

“Exciting times for all involved with the Malta Boxing Boxing Commission, it really is.

The increase in events, to be sanctioned by us in 2015, is testament to the quality and professionalism of our UK based officials, I couldn’t possibly thank Mickey Vann, Ken Curtis, Billy Phillips, Lee Murtagh, Seamus Dunne, Gino Picconino, Dave Smith, Ken Honniball, Brian Gentry, Terry Clarke, Fred Little, Steven Smith, Ehsen Qureshi, Phil Jones, Micky Conway, Winston Stone, Phil Jones, Jason Lowe and Matt Amos enough for their excellent performances over the past twelve months, I also have to thank our excellent European based officials, Alf Sprung and Jan Telecki, that came over to officiate on the Championship events here.

I can’t help but feel that a major part of this increase in awareness of the MBC in the UK is also due to people like Dave Murphy, Lee Murtagh and Stephen Vaughan Jr. promoting events with MBC sanctioning, these are serious boxing people, hugely respected by most people within the business and they have chosen to be licensed by us.

Between them they promoted some seriously great events over the past year, featuring some fantastic fights, which I’m sure didn’t go unnoticed by the boxing world.

Dave’s October York Hall event was truly first class and of course as British #1 female boxer Marianne Marston, who is licensed by us, won her first title on that event, no surprise then that this event received a huge amount of media coverage and rightly so.

Stephen’s December show at the Titanic in Liverpool was something really special too, again another title headed event, this event received excellent coverage and of course had the additional benefit of being broadcast in parts of Europe.

I’m sure those events have a lot to do with the increase in popularity of the MBC sanctioning here, with both boxers and promoters alike.

So much so that we now have forty two UK based boxers licensed with us, with many more due to take out licenses before the end of January.

More impressively we now have twelve promoters around the Country, with at least another five due to be licensed by us over the coming month or so.

It really is exciting times for the MBC in the UK, which can only be good for the sport.”

Malta Boxing Commission In Demand – Five International Events Before End Of Year, Four In The UK!

Malta Boxing Commission Vice President Gianluca Di Caro today announced that the fast growing International sanctioning division of the organisation recently received numerous requests to sanction further events in the UK, in addition to the planned Internationally broadcast WBC and WBF title headed event in Malta.

Following the hugely successful sanctioning of the Dave Murphy Acourtier Events promoted CAPITAL PUNISHMENT MBC International Championship headed event at York Hall on October 25th, negotiations with a number of UK promoters were concluded, which has led to four further UK events, in November and December, being added to the schedule, with a possible fifth likely to be signed later this week.

The four confirmed events will take place in Leeds on Sunday November 30th, followed by two UK events on Saturday 6th December, one in Birmingham and the other in London, then on to Nottingham on Sunday 14thDecember. Full details of these events will be announced shortly.

The possible fifth UK event is pencilled in to take place in Cumbria, date or venue not yet confirmed.

In addition to the UK events, on Saturday 6th December the Malta Boxing Commission will also be sanctioning a World Boxing Council (WBC) and World Boxing Federation (WBF) Championship headed event in Malta, which will be broadcast live and exclusive on the Russian Fight Club Channel.

On making the announcement, Malta Boxing Commission Vice President Gianluca Di Caro said,

“We’ve now sanctioned a number of events in the UK, which produced a lot of enquiries from promoters looking to sign with us.

I have to say that the exceptional event that we sanctioned on Saturday night in London really helped us to lock in a number of these events.

It was a very proud and special night for all of us associated with the Malta Boxing Commission and our Championship division MBC International.

Back in August 2011 the very first female boxer licensed by the Malta Boxing Commission was Marianne Marston, on Saturday night Marianne also became the very first female boxer to secure an MBC International Championship, we’re so proud of her and boy oh boy did she win it in style, it was a fantastic fight.

Gaining all the UK events is an exceptional achievement, but when you add the upcoming Fight Club broadcast MBC and WBF title headed international event, we are to sanction in Malta on December 6th, it really goes to prove the stature of the MBC is growing at a pace, especially on the International stage.

No doubt December 6th is going to be a particularly busy day for our team, working three different shows in two different countries on the same night, it’s a challenge, but a challenge our world class team more than relishes.”

Malta Boxing Commission Appoint Al Low, Former Chairman of the Michigan State Commission as New Chairman

Malta Boxing Commission Managing Director and Vice President Gianluca Di Caro today announced that Al Low, the former Chairman of the Michigan State Boxing Commission, has been appointed as the new Chairman of both the Malta Boxing Commission and the recently introduced MBC International Championship.

Mr Low, who has been involved in professional boxing for over thirty eight years, worked alongside legendary coach, the late, great, Emanuel Steward for many years, during which time Mr Low promoted the largest fight in Detroit’s history with Thomas Hearns as the main event as well as managed Leon Spinks for seven years.

More recently Mr Low was appointed by the Governor of the State Michigan and served nine years as the Chairman of the Boxing Commission, that later became renamed Unarmed Combat Commission for the State of Michigan.

During his tenure as Chairman of the Michigan State board Mr Low also sat on the board of the Detroit Golden Gloves.

On announcing the appointment of Mr Low as Chairman, Mr Di Caro said.

“It is with enormous pleasure that I am able to announce the appointment of Al Low, as the new Chairman of the Malta Boxing Commission and the MBC International Championship.

It just goes to show the stature of the Malta Boxing Commission today, that such a highly respected world renowned figure, such as Al is willing to come on board with us.

Al has a wealth of knowledge, as well as excellent contacts within World boxing circles, I am sure that with him at the helm the Malta Boxing Commission will go from strength to strength.

Over the coming weeks there will be further announcements, as we are actively seeking to strengthen the team, in light of the damaging actions by the former acting Chairman, Mr Leif Magnusson, as well as others associated with him, that were bought to our attention by European Boxing Union General Secretary, Mrs Enza Jacaponi last week.

Unfortunately I can’t say too much on this matter at this time, due to the on-going police investigation, but will say that I am confident that when the newly restructured board is complete, we will have one of the strongest boards in the business today, as it will consist mainly of well known and highly respected World boxing luminaries.

The top end of the board has been very strong for a while, as we have had the pleasure of having two time, two division World Champion Steve ‘Celtic Warrior’ Collins as our President, we have also had the pleasure of having two time Heavyweight Champion of the World, ‘Terrible’ Tim Witherspoon, as co-Vice President alongside myself, and of course now comes the news of the appointment of Al Low as Chairman.

All I can say right now is watch this space, the future is extremely bright for the Malta Boxing Commission and Boxing on the Islands of Malta.”

Association Of Boxing Commissions Induct Malta Boxing Commission and MBC International

Malta Boxing Commission Vice President Gianluca Di Caro today announced that both the Malta Boxing Commission and the UK based subsidiary MBC International have become affiliated to the prestigious Association of Boxing Commissions.

The Association of Boxing Commissions, (ABC), which is based in America, is the industry leading sanctioning regulatory organisation and through it’s membership is responsible for the unified rules of Boxing, as well as many of the boxer safety regulations, that most national and world sanctioning organisations adhere to.

On welcoming Malta Boxing Commission and MBC International to the fold, ABC President Mr Timothy J. Lueckenhoff said,

"The Association of Boxing Commissions welcomes the Malta Boxing Commission.

The mission of the ABC is to bring about the standardized regulation of combative sport, including boxing and mixed martial arts.

This is accomplished by communication with one another and the use of the certified boxing registry Fightfax, Inc., where by all official boxing results are reported by member commission as well as medical and administrative suspension are listed to ensure that no boxer compete while they are injured and need medical clearance to resume their boxing career.

Best of luck to the Malta Boxing Commission."

Malta Boxing Commission Vice President and MBC International President Gianluca Di Caro then added,

“It is with great pleasure to announce that both Malta Boxing Commission and MBC International have become members of such a prestigious organisation as the Association of Boxing Commissions.

We believe that this is a major move forward for us, as we will be working closely with the world’s elite sanctioning organisations, such as Nevada State, who sanction the events in Las Vegas, including some of biggest Championship events in the sport.

We are confident that working alongside such elite organisations can only benefit those who are licensed or box on MBC sanctioned events, as we shall be operating to the exact same standards, as all events sanctioned by ourselves, whether in Malta or the United Kingdom, will be under the ABC unified rules of Boxing, as they are without doubt the industry leading standard.”
