Warriors Signs World-Ranked Light Heavyweight Michael Seals

Warriors Boxing proudly announces the signing of undefeated Mobile, Alabama, light heavyweight Michael Seals (18-0, 14 KOs).

A latecomer, 32-year-old Seals started boxing at age 23, after a successful career as a linebacker for Alabama A&M University. But Seals has wasted no time catching up.

"Boxing was something I always wanted to do as kid, but coming from the south, especially Alabama, it's all about football, so I played," explained Seals. "I never really had a chance to box. Once I got done with football, I found a gym in Decatur, Alabama, and started there. I fell in love after the first time I sparred. I said 'man, I should have been doing this my whole life.' I was wasting my time with football. I could have been world champion three or four times over by now."

Seals had just five amateur fights, but went on a world tour of sorts, sparring with many of the world's top fighters.

"I've sparred with lots of world champs and top contenders. Most of the people I sparred with back then were pros, ranked contenders and champs and former champs. I've even been to camp with Wladimir Klitschko and held my own. He's a super hero, but I didn't embarrass myself. Sparring with these guys was like a fight every time out. I was traveling their homes and you know how that goes. They try to make an example of you. I had to fight for my life, basically."

Seals is currently rated WBC #25 and says he looks to his new promoters to help him move further and further up the ladder.

"I've been knowing about Warriors since I started boxing. Since way back when Glen Johnson knocked out Roy Jones Junior. I've always had a healthy respect for their company. And I was always open to signing with them. My trainer, Sugar Burt, has had a long relationship with (Warriors Matchmaker and Coordinator) Chico Rivas since he was 12 years old. We had been talking about signing with Warriors for a long time. I just got out of my previous contract and now Warriors is back on the prowl, doing their thing again. So we revisited the situation and chose to go with Warriors. Hopefully by the end of the year I will at least be in the top 5 if not fighting for a world title. My ultimate goal is to win a super middleweight championship and then move back up and win a light heavyweight title and then win a cruiserweight belt."

Warriors Boxing President, Leon Margules, says he's happy to have Seals joining his stable.

"Michael didn't have a huge amateur career, but he's a natural talent and we're very excited about his prospects for the future. He has the power and the ability to become a major force at 168, 175 and even cruiserweight."

Seals says he prides himself on being a throwback type of fighter.

"My style is more of a James Tony/Bernard Hopkins. I use the shoulder roll and angles with subtle movements. I use the ring like you're supposed to, without using a whole lot of energy. I'm real smooth. I like to roll punches and slip punches in the pocket and counter."

'King' Carlos Training in Mexico, Signs Agreement with Manager Al Haymon

IBF Light Middleweight Champion "King" Carlos Molina (22-5-2, 6 KOs) has signed a managerial contract with Al Haymon and is temporarily training in Mexico City, while promoter and attorney Leon Margules sorts out his immigration issues.

30-year-old Molina, originally from Michoacán, Mexico, says he's excited to have aligned himself with one of boxing's most high-profile managers and is looking forward to returning to the ring.

"I'm really excited and looking forward to fighting the best out there," said Molina. "Al Haymon has a history of getting the big fights for guys and that's what I wanted. He will make a great addition to my team, which already includes Warriors Boxing and Leon and Luis (De Cubas Sr.), who have always done right by me in my career."

Leon Margules says he hopes to have Molina's, a Mexican citizen living in Chicago for many years, immigration issues ironed out soon and is looking forward to getting the IBF Champion big fights.

"Carlos is excited to work with Al who is going to help us get him the important fights he's always wanted," said Margules. "Al does a fantastic job with all his fighters and we're sure he'll do the same for Carlos."

Legendary, long-time boxing advisor Luis De Cubas Sr. says he's also happy about the Haymon agreement for Molina.

"I'm very excited that Carlos is ready to come back and defend his title and I'm very happy he made Al Haymon his manager," said De Cubas. "Al is the best in the world without a doubt."

De Cubas also says he was surprised at Molina's fitness level for having been away from training for a few months.

"I spent time with Carlos in Mexico and he's in surprisingly great shape. He did 20 rounds his first day back and ran for an hour. I was very excited to see that. In that altitude, that's amazing."

Molina says he will be ready to return to battle "in June or July."

In the night's 10-round, televised welterweight main event, Roberto "La Amenaza" Garcia (34-3, 22 KOs) of Weslaco, Texas, will face Victor "Mermelada" Cayo (32-4, 23 KOs) of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. In the televised 10-round middleweight co-feature, undefeated Jonathan "Mantequilla" González (17-0-1, 14 KOs) of San Juan, Puerto Rico will put his near-perfect record on the line against an opponent to be determined.

Tickets for "Noche de Combates," are priced at $20, $35, $50 and $100 and are on sale now. They can be purchased at ticketforce.com, as well ashialeahpark.com, and also at the Hialeah Park Racing & Casino box office. For more information, call the special Boxing Hotline at 786-483-7444.

Super middleweight southpaw James "Buddy" McGirt Jr. (22-3-1, 11 KOs) is the son of former IBF Junior welterweight and WBC welterweight champion James "Buddy" McGirt, who also serves as his trainer. McGirt was once a staple on ESPN and Showtime, but hasn't fought since losing to top contender Edwin Rodriguez in 2010.

The group has also signed a pair of talented twin-brother featherweight contenders in Carlos Ivan "Twin Dream" Velasquez (16-1, 11 KOs) and Juan Carlos Velasquez (11-1, 5 KOs), from Catano, Puerto Rico, now living in Miami.

As amateurs, the Velasquez brothers had a combined total of 290 amateur wins. Carlos Ivan was a 2004 Olympian, whose only professional loss was to former world champion Rico Ramos last year, a fight in which he had Ramos on the deck. While Carlos Ivan is more of an aggressive puncher, brother Juan Carlos is well-known for his technical superiority. He suffered his lone professional loss via upset decision in 2009 and has been out of the ring since 2012.

"These guys haven't been active for various reasons, but they're all hungry and ready to do what they need to do to become top contenders and champions and so are we," said Leon Margules of Warriors Boxing. "This joining of forces will be great for all three of their careers and for Florida boxing as well."

I'm very happy and proud to be joining forces with AG and to have the opportunity to work with these three fighters," said Luis DeCubas of Warriors Boxing. "With our combined vision and commitment to them, they will all re-emerge as top contenders and eventually champions."

The undercard will also include an eight-round light heavyweight bout featuring knockout artist Yunieski Gonzalez (13-0, 13 KOs) of Havana, Cuba, who will put his perfect record on the line against Arpartado, Colombia's Jaison Palomeque (14-9-1, 9 KOs); and a six-round cruiserweight affair, featuring undefeated Cuban Vilier Quinonez (7-0, 4 KOs) of Havana taking on Edgar Perez (5-8, 3 KOs) of San Juan, Puerto Rico.

"COLLISION" WBC WORLD LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP ADONIS STEVENSON VS. ANDRZEJ FONFARA May 24 at the Bell Centre in Montreal

PRESS RELEASE
For Immediate Release

(L-R) Fonfara's promoter, Leon Margules, challenger Andrzej Fonfara, champion Adonis Stevenson, and Stevenson's promoter Yvon Michel
MONTREAL (March 27, 2014)- The 2013 "Fighter of the Year," according to The Ring Magazine and many other boxing publications, as well as the recipient of the prestigious "KO of the Year" award, Adonis "Superman" Stevenson ( 23-1-0, 20 KOs ) returns to the ring May 24 at Bell Centre in Montreal to defend his World Boxing Council (WBC), The Ring and lineal light heavyweight titles for the third time against challenger Andrzej Fonfara (25-2-0, 15KO ).

Born in Warsaw, Poland and now fighting out of Chicago, Illinois, Fonfara is rated No. 1 by the International Boxing Federation (IBF) and World Boxing Organization (WBO), as well as No. 3 by the WBC.
The world light heavyweight title fight between Stevenson and Fonfara headlines, "COLLISION," which is presented by Groupe Yvon Michel (GYM), in association with Warriors Boxing, and co-presented of Mise-O-Jeu and Videotron. As previously announced this fascinating boxing event will air live in the USA on Showtime, thanks to Mr. Stephen Espinoza, its Executive Vice President & General Manager, Sports and Event Programming.

"Superman's 2013 was a year well beyond all predictions, beyond all imagination so tremendous it was," GYM president Yvon Michel said.  "He rose to the ranks of international superstar, considered to be the best light heavyweight on the planet! It is a privilege to see him in action again here in Montreal."

Stevenson, 36, won his world light heavyweight title via knockout in only 76 seconds of then-undisputed light heavyweight champion, "Bad" Chad Dawson (31-3-0, 17 KOs). In his first title defense on September 28, 2014, the new champion was supposed to face a major test against former world champion Tavoris "Thunder" Cloud (24-1-0, 19 KOs).  It was quite different, however, as the powerful left-hander pushed Cloud until he retired at the end of the seventh round, after Stevenson gave him a thorough boxing lesson.  Stevenson gave a brilliant demonstration of skills, finesse, speed, defense, and power. Two months later, "Superman" completed his dream year with an unequivocal defeat of the WBC No. 1 mandatory contender from Great Britain, Tony 'Bomber' Bellew (20-1-1, 12 KOs), who was unable to finish the sixth round. The tough Englishman later declared that he had never been hit with such powerful shots, even by heavyweights.

During his incredibly amazing run, the powerful southpaw Stevenson has knocked out all 10 of his last 10 opponents: Bellew (TKO6), Cloud ( TKO7 ), Dawson (KO1), Darnell Boone (KO6), Don George (TKO12), Noe Gonzales ( TKO2 ), Jesus Gonzales (KO1), Aaron Pryor Jr. (TKO9 ), Shujaa El Amin  TKO1) and Derek Edwards (KO3). In fact, the last time a Stevenson fight went the full distance dates back to 2007.

The 26-year-old Fonfara has had spectacular victories over three former world champions in his last five fights. First, by third-round technical knockout in 2012 against former WBA monarch Byron Mitchell (29-9-1, 22 KOs), followed by a 10-round decision over multiple champion Glen Johnson (51-16-2, 35 KOs), and then last year a ninth-round stoppage of former WBA title-holder Gabriel Campillo (22-5-1, 9 KOs).

Fonfara has won his last 15 fights, 12 by knockout, and he has never been defeated fighting as a light heavyweight. He had discussions to face WBO championSergey Kovalev and he could have fought to become mandatory challenger to IBF champion
Bernard Hopkins. Fonfara preferred to fight Stevenson because he is convinced that he has the right style and resources to overthrow the world champion. According to American journalist Briggs Seekins, "Fonfara has power in both hands and undoubtedly belongs to the elite of the division. It is certainly the most serious test of Stevenson title defense."

Other fights on the "COLLISION" card will be announced in the coming days but GYM is committed to presenting another memorable event.  GYM does confirm that the IBF No. 10, WBO No. 11 and WBC No. 16 middleweight David Lemieux (31-2-0, 29 KOs) will be in the co-feature for the most important fight of his career. WBO No. 2, WBA No. 3 and WBC No. 10 world light heavyweight contender Eleider Alvarez (14-0-0, 8 KOs) will be in action May 24, along with rising light heavyweight star Artur Beterbiev (4-0-0, 4 KOs), IBF No. 7 middleweight Kevin Bizier (24-1-0, 14 KOs), heavyweight prospect Oscar Rivas (13-0-0, 8 KOs ), super middleweight Sébastien Bouchard (8-0-0, 2 KOs), and young welterweight Yves Ulysse Jr. (1-0-0, 1 KOs).
Tickets go on sale this Saturday morning (Mar. 29) at 10:00 a.m. ET, at Bell Centre, online at www.evenko.ca, calling GYM at (514) 383-0666, or Boxing Club Champion(514) 376-0980 Ticket prices range from $50.00 up to $350.00 reserved on the floor.
