#PunchTheVote returns for three title fights at MFC 40

Fan voting will determine Crowned Kings main event
For the second time in the history of the Maximum Fighting Championship, fans will get to pick the true main event of fight card featuring three title bouts.
The MFC's #PunchTheVote campaign launches on Tuesday, March 4 and will run till 11:59 p.m. on Friday, May 2, allowing fans to register their pick between three title fights with the top vote-getter receiving main-event billing at MFC 40: Crowned Kings on Friday, May 9.
Airing live on AXS TV Fights from the Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton, Alberta, MFC 40 boasts a trio of main-event worthy bouts, all with MFC championship belts on the line including the first defense by bantamweight champion Anthony Birchak, who won the inaugural #PunchTheVote campaign at MFC 38.
"The MFC continues to be a front-runner when it comes to creativity, and #PunchTheVote was such a huge success that we had to bring it back," said Mark Pavelich, Owner/President of the Maximum Fighting Championship.
"We love getting the fans involved because we are one of the only organizations in any sport that truly values the opinions of its fans. The fans have been incredibly loyal to the MFC and this is one way we can pay them back. It is our responsibility to bring the fans great fights and we want the fans' perspective on who deserves to be the main event."
The three fights MFC fans will get to vote for are:
MFC bantamweight title - Anthony Birchak (11-1) vs. Kevin Croom (14-4)
*Birchak won the title at MFC 38 and was part of Sports Illustrated 2013 Photos of the Year. Croom enters the MFC on a nine-fight winning streak including seven first-round finishes.

MFC lightweight title - Kurt Southern (13-5) vs. Tom Gallicchio (18-8)
*This is a much-anticipated rematch following their fight at MFC 39 that Gallicchio won via second-round submission. The two have combined for 19 submission victories.

MFC middleweight title - Sam Alvey (21-5) vs. Wes Swofford (9-4)
*Alvey, who has won four of his last five fights, makes the first title defense of his title he won at MFC 38 with a fifth-round TKO. Swofford boasts seven first-round wins - six of those coming by knockout.

MFC President proves his loyalty and talks bringing the MFC to the United States

BY BRYAN LEVICK, BLEACHERREPORT.COM

Every time we speak to Maximum Fighting Championships President Mark Pavelich he leaves us with some great quotes, outlandish statements and a few daggers in the hearts of the other would be promoters he believes are in the sport for the wrong reason.

Many may find him brash and some have a hard time understanding his tactics, but regardless of how you may feel about Pavelich, the man is as passionate about the sport of mixed martial arts as anyone else. There’s a reason why his organization is still going strong after 14 years in the mixed martial arts business.
As quick as he is to support the fighters who do right by him he is as quick to attack the fighters who disrespect him, his family and his organization. Many a fighter has found themselves in his cross-hairs after missing weight or acting inappropriately. There are not many people that Pavelich trusts and that is why he has enlisted the help of several family members.
“The Maximum Fighting Championship is run by seven people and most of them have the same last name,” Pavelich told Alchemist Radio. “We are talked about in the same light as the UFC who are run by multi-millionaires, Bellator who are run by multi-gazillionaires and the WSOF who are run by; well we’re not really sure. It’s like being in an absolute war against people with tanks, guns and atomic bombs. The Pavelich family has slingshots and we’re still in the game.”
Pavelich is always very proud of the fighters he signs to compete in his organization and he does an incredible job of hyping up each and every fight on the card. On January 17, MFC 39 will feature a main event pitting their heavyweight champion Anthony Hamilton against TUF season 10 contestant Darrill Schoonover. Many fans will remember Schoonover solely due to the fact that Quinton “Rampage Jackson” saddled him with the nickname “Titties”, but don’t let Pavelich hear you call him that.
“My new nickname is the bully killer,” admitted Pavelich. “What I’ve done now is anyone who refers to Schoonover by that nickname; I will hang up the phone on them. People are stupid, I grew up in Detroit, Michigan and I grew up with bullies all day long. What bothers me most are people who point out the obvious. We’re making fun of someone who was overweight; I make fun of people who can defend themselves.”
“I know Quinton very well and I got along with him great when we were on Inside MMA together, but at the same time if he ever tried that s**t around me I would hit him over the head with a baseball bat. When Quinton did that on the show he was really trying to bully him and he knew Schoonover wasn’t in a position to do anything about it. In his last fight he put it on Paul Buentello, so it’s time to start putting it into perspective what level of fighter this guy is actually at. On top of it he has a massive chip on his shoulder.”
“These two are going to kill each other inside the ring on January 17th,” promised Pavelich. “If you watched Hamilton’s last fight you’ll know that Smealinho Rama is still looking for his head, he knocked it right it into the fourth row. By far the best knockout of 2013 and the funny thing is he looked like he was done for, I thought he was done. This will be his first title defense.”

Kurt Southern was able to extract some revenge on Jonatas Novaes at MFC 38 after their first bout at MFC 36 ending in controversy. There was footage that showed Novaes grabbing Southern’s gloves before latching on a fight ending submission. Southern also earned a title shot at MFC 39 with the 1st round knockout of Novaes and will take on little known Team Quest lightweight Tom Gallicchio who will be making his debut as a lightweight. These guys may have different personalities, but they have one thing in common; they want to hurt one another.

“These two will meet in the semi-main event and Southern will be looking to become one of the few Canadians to win a title in the MFC,” Pavelich said. “Gallicchio is from Team Quest and he’s never fought at 155 lbs. These two can pretend on Twitter that they like each other, but they don’t. When you’re fighting in front of this many people, you know they don’t like one another.”
“People say to me all the time that they’re not that familiar with Douglas Lima,” Pavelich stated. “Mark, I’m not that familiar with Patrick Cote or Paul Daley. These are all guys who fought for the MFC in the past. I did a lot of research on Gallicchio and that’s why I put him in this position. If you think I’m crazy, this guy is nuts. On January 17th on AXS TV, you’re going to see why I signed him.”

“I wish Southern would talk a little more because he’s an awesome guy. At the same time he possesses some form of evilness in his DNA. He doesn’t want to point spar his opponents, he wants to wreck them. When you fall down to the ground he wants to punch your face through the mat. I love that type of fighter.”
Anthony Birchak is the MFC bantamweight champion and seems to have all the tools to become a real superstar in mixed martial arts. We spoke with him before he defeated Tito Jones at MFC 38 for the title and he possesses all the characteristics to lead the MFC into the future, inside and outside of the ring.
“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Birchak is the franchise,” admitted Pavelich. “I’ve never said that in 14 years about any of my fighters. He’s been promoting MFC 39 more than any other fighter on the show and he’s not even fighting. That tells you right there what type of company guy he is. To say I am a fan of his is an absolute understatement. I like everything he does; he goes out of his way to promote the MFC. He’s a first class human being, he is awesome. You can see him defending his title at MFC 40 on May 9th.”

With fighters like Southern, Hamilton, Birchak and Sam Alvey representing the MFC the future is very bright for Mark Pavelich’s promotion. He has a solid relationship with AXS TV and the organization is beloved by the Canadian fans. He’s got some ideas in mind that will help build an even brighter future.
“I am starting to smell us getting into the United States in 2014,” admitted Pavelich. “We are working on some casino deals as we speak. I’m so excited because I’ve been holding my breath for 14 years. It’s a small miracle when you see what we do as a family. If you compare the budget we work with against some of these other shows, yet we’re still on the same playing field, it’s amazing. It comes down to great TV deals, great sponsors, great fighters and of course great fans.”

Birchak to face Jones for MFC bantamweight crown

'Power of Pink' initiative returns for MFC 38 on Oct. 4
The Maximum Fighting Championship, a worldwide leader in mixed martial arts, is excited to announce one of the two title fights that will be decided at MFC 38: Behind Enemy Lines taking place on Friday, October 4.
Holding co-main event status, the inaugural MFC bantamweight title fight will take place pitting rising star Anthony Birchak against accomplished veteran Tito Jones. The crowning of the MFC's first 135-pound division champ headlines an action-packed night airing live on AXS TV Fights from the Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton, Alberta, with the televised card getting under way at 10 p.m. ET/8 p.m. MT/7 p.m. PT (check local listings for channel designation).

"Anthony's performance at MFC 37 was without a doubt one of the fiercest and most entertaining showcases I've ever seen," said MFC Owner/President Mark Pavelich.

"I'm incredibly excited to be putting Anthony in a title fight and equally as excited to see Tito Jones go after the belt. Tito didn't hesitate for one second to go face-to-face against Birchak and that tells me he's going to bring the fight right to him which is what the fans of the MFC love."

Birchak (10-1) is riding high coming off his thrilling decision over Ryan Benoit at MFC 37 - a fight that will certainly be a contender for the MFC's 2013 Fight of the Year. Birchak (Twitter: @abirchakmma) has won four straight fights and boasts three knockouts and five submissions over his career. The 29-year-old Tucson, Arizona, product is ranked #79 in the world by FightMatrix.com.

Jones (10-6) has designs on making his MFC debut end with a championship as the 31-year-old brings a three-fight winning streak into the matchup which includes a 21-second knockout of Deven Jones. A former Arizona resident, Jones (Twitter: @TitoKidKO) now fights out of Sacramento, California, and holds three knockouts and one submission on his career ledger. Jones is ranked #101 by FightMatrix.com.

Being that MFC 38: Behind Enemy Lines takes place in the month of October, the Maximum Fighting Championship will once again recognize breast cancer awareness and the brave individuals who are engaged in that fight.

The “Power of Pink” Initiative returns to the MFC after debuting last October at MFC 35. will take place on Friday, October 26 at the Mayfield Conference Centre in Edmonton, Alberta. The MFC will wrap the ring ropes in pink tape as opposed to the usual white, the MFC's pink ribbon logo will be on the ring mat, and fighters will sport pink tape on their gloves. MFC staff will also be wearing pink accessories such as neckties during fight night.

"Breast cancer awareness and the 'Power of Pink' is our way of acknowledging and supporting the most important fight of all," added Pavelich. "We are encouraging our fighters to show their support by wearing pink during their walkout and in the ring, as well as sporting pink on their sponsorship banners."

The main card of MFC 38 will also feature a co-headlining bout for the MFC heavyweight title plus four more fights featuring many of the Maximum Fighting Championship's top stars. Details on those fights will be released shortly.

Tickets for MFC 38: Behind Enemy Lines are on sale now at www.ticketmaster.ca with exclusive seating also available by calling the MFC Ticket Hotline at (780) 504-2024.

Alberta’s answer to Dana White has his eye on the prize – and a chip on his shoulder

by Tim Querengesser Alberta Venture

Mark Pavelich is the first to tell you that he’s second. He tells you that the Maximum Fighting Championship that he owns, in Edmonton, aims to be the second largest mixed martial arts league in the world. Ask how long it has been in existence and Pavelich answers that, whatever the length, it’s the second longest.
Like many Canadian entrepreneurs, Pavelich is in the shadow of his larger competition in the U.S.– specifically the Las Vegas-based Ultimate Fighting Championship, which dwarfs all other MMA leagues, and its celebrity president Dana White. But there’s something personal about it that makes Pavelich – whose successes are impressive, including lucrative TV deals in Canada (through TSN2) and the U.S. (through AXS TV), as well as backing by “shark” investor (and Dallas Mavericks owner) Mark Cuban – constantly compare himself to the UFC and, especially, to White. Is the comparison evidence of jealousy or instead the scrappy entrepreneurial ambition needed to succeed internationally from Canada? Alberta Venture’s Tim Querengesser called Pavelich at his Edmonton headquarters to find out.

TQ: How are you?

Mark Pavelich: Fantastic.

TQ: Fantastic?

MP: People say I’m lucky [but] I tell everyone I’m blessed, so it’s going good. You want to talk about my Maximum Fighting business?

TQ: I do, but I want to know more about you first. Were you the tough kid on your block?

MP: Don’t be mistaken: I was forced to be tough, right. I’m a very passive person by nature and then when picked upon I become very aggressive. But I was the kid in the neighbourhood that, you know … people would bully me a little bit and then when I got bullied too much I would always fight back.

TQ: What was your MFC business like in the beginning?

MP: It was grueling because, you know, that’s why most people in this industry go out of business, right – it’s a tough fight. No one knew what MMA meant. I’ve spent half my life explaining to people what it was, let alone selling it. Initially when I got into this business I wanted to put on shows, and then I realized, wait a second: This is a business.

TQ: You and the MFC are often compared to Dana White and the UFC. What’s different?

MP: Dana White uses lots of profanity. In press conferences he’s dropping F-bombs all over the place. I am not that person, right. The problem with me is I have a gigantic chip on my shoulder … because I am angry. And it’s David and Goliath, but to the utmost proportions– because I’m playing with such a smaller budget than my competitors, and [yet] I’m still competing with them. Hey, I still have over 40,000 people following me on Twitter, right? Like Dana White has 20 people Twittering for him all at the same time, right? That’s the difference. For us, it always seems like we have to work so much harder.”

TQ: So how big can you get from Canada?

MP: I can be the second biggest show in the world from Canada, there’s no question in my mind. People will say, ‘Oh, United States …’ Well, 80 per cent of my fighter roster is American, my broadcasting partners are American, but let’s not forget, too … I’m the only MMA show, period, on TSN. We’re the last standing show that hasn’t sold anything to anybody. And we’ve been approached over the years from people, and only now we’ve realized that to get to the next level we would probably have to sell 49 per cent of the Maximum Fighting Championship.”

TQ: Wait, you’re looking for someone to buy 49 per cent of the MFC?

MP: That’s the first time I ever said it out loud. I’m the second most interviewed promoter in the world, for fighting, for combative sports. Dana White’s the most interviewed. [But] I’m the second most. Right?

MARK PAVELICH AND STREET SOILDER APPAREL MAKE PERFECT FIT

Canadian Clothing Company Now Sponsoring MFC Promoter

Street Soldier Apparel has entered an agreement to sponsor Mark Pavelich, the owner of the Maximum Fighting Championship.  The deal is unlike most sponsorship agreements in mixed martial arts because it puts the brand on the promoter himself.    For Pavelich and Street Soldier owner Jack Rego, joining forces makes perfect sense – it brings together two Canadian companies with a shared spirit of survival and success.

Street Soldier Apparel is a clothing brand known for its authentically tidy design and feel.

Rego confirms he builds the brand’s clean-cut look intentionally, “We’re trying to build brand recognition.  If it starts getting lost with [too many] designs and looks, it defeats the purpose.  For now, I’m trying to keep it clean.”  For Street Soldier, it’s not only about being recognized, it’s about working hard for that recognition.  With images of dog tags and slogans like “Believe in the Underdog,” Street Soldier is a brand built for those willing to work and go to war.    Enter Mark Pavelich.

Pavelich has worked incredibly hard to build the MFC into one of the most successful MMA promotions in the world.   He faced the challenge of running an MMA promotion long before the sport realized mainstream popularity.   His dedication and work ethic personify the Street Soldier image, and he welcomed the opportunity to support it in a recent interview.  “It’s a real honour to make this deal with Street Soldier.” says Pavelich, “I wouldn’t wear the brand if I didn’t believe in the brand and respect what it stands for.”

With the announcement of the sponsorship, Rego reinforced the reasoning behind his decision to sponsor Pavelich: “I try to align myself with people who have the drive and the will to be the best.”  Rego also realizes the exposure opportunity Pavelich brings with his significant online presence:  “We’re in the age of social media, and [Pavelich] is a great spokesman and entertainer on Facebook, Twitter, and Tout.  We can combine our efforts with @strtsoldier, @MarkPavelich, and www.strtsoldier.com.”

According to Rego, fans can expect to see MMA’s popular and polarizing personality rocking the Street Soldier brand in the near future.   Rego also confirmed MFC fighter Joseph Henle will be sponsored as he heads into his middleweight title fight at MFC 35.

Moving into this new era for Street Soldier, Rego is grateful to those who’ve supported him to this point:  “I want to thank each and every person who has purchased a stitch of clothing from Street Soldier.  Without the fans and the fighters, I wouldn’t be where I am now.  I’m a firm believer in karma.  If you give out to others, you get it back tenfold.”

MFC bolstered by bantamweights in ’13 Time is right to strengthen talent pool with 135-pound division

With the recent re-launch of its heavyweight division and the upcoming debut of its featherweight division, the Maximum Fighting Championship is excited to announce that the organization will add a bantamweight division in 2013.
The new 135-pound division will be unveiled at the MFC event slated for February of next year. With the steadily increasing influx of quality of fighters in the class, the Maximum Fighting Championship chose to add the division and bolster its roster of top-notch talent.
“The time is right to do it,” said MFC Owner/President Mark Pavelich. “We waited a long time to re-ignite the heavyweight division because at the time we dropped the division the talent pool, especially the overall athleticism, was very thin. Now the batch of heavyweights available is much better.
“We are bringing in the featherweights at MFC 35 because we found the right guys to kickstart that division with. And as we received calls and emails about the 145ers, it became clear that there is a very good crop of 135ers out there, so the decision was made to launch the bantamweights.
“I would expect that the MFC will have its first bantamweights signed in the very near future.”
To get the bantamweight division rolling, plans are being developed that will see two bouts on the MFC card in February with the winners of those fights squaring off later in ’13 for the inaugural MFC bantamweight title match. The MFC recently adopted the same two-fight title eliminator scenario for events during which title fights were set in the welterweight and middleweight divisions.
At MFC 32, welterweights tangled in top-contender contests, and Nathan Coy defeated Dhiego Lima, while Ryan McGillivray stopped Diego Bautista. Coy would go on to claim the MFC welterweight crown at MFC 33 with a third-round TKO of McGillivray.
Then at MFC 34, the middleweights battled it out with Joseph Henle and Elvis Mutapcic both earning first-round TKO victories as they toppled Luke Harris and Jacen Flynn, respectively. Henle and Mutapcic will clash for the MFC middleweight title in the co-main event of MFC 35: Explosive Encounter coming up on Friday, Oct. 26 at the Mayfield Conference Centre in Edmonton, Alberta. The event will air live on AXS TV Fights beginning at 10 p.m. ET/8 p.m. MT/7 p.m. PT (check local listings for channel designation).
Tickets for MFC 35 are currently on sale and available exclusively through the MFC Ticket Hotline by calling (780) 504-2024.
