Sho Nuff: Nelson gets past Blencowe to retain title!

Springfield, VA (September 28, 2014) – WIBA welterweight champion Tori “Sho Nuff” Nelson overcame adversity and a tough opponent en route to a hard-fought ten round split decision over ultra-tough former titlist Arlene Blencowe Saturday evening at the ABC Sports Complex in Springfield, VA.

Nelson, who hails from nearby Ashburn, VA and is regarded as a top pound for pound fighter, came into the bout with a lot of confidence due to excellent performances of late. Blencowe however didn’t come all the way from Australia to not put up a serious fight.

In the opening round, Blencowe silenced the pro-Nelson by coming out strong and hurting Nelson early on. The 37-year-old Nelson remained calm and recovered to outbox the rugged Blencowe.

Scores were 96-94 twice for Nelson and 97-93 Blencowe.

“She really came to fight and I knew she was going to be tough because of the opposition she’s fought and her background in MMA” said Nelson, who improved to 11-0-3 with 1 win by knockout. “It was a good fight and I’m the first to admit this wasn’t my best performance but I definitely outboxed her and did enough to keep my title.”

Nelson also dismissed the notion that she may have received a hometown decision.

“I was making her miss later on and countering her well in the second half of the fight. Both my corner and I were confident that after the first few rounds, I was in control and took over down the stretch.  Keeping my title is harder than winning it was and I always have to stay two steps ahead of the competition. I’m going back to the gym tomorrow to prepare for my next fight!”

Nelson returns Saturday, November 15 at the PatriotCenter in Fairfax, VA to defend her title against an opponent to be named.

In the co-feature, Tyrieshia “Lady Tyga” Douglas captured the USBU flyweight title after blowing out Whitney Gunter in eighty two seconds. Douglas, aWashington DC native who lives and trains in Baltimore, dropped Gunter twice before referee Alisha Daniels stopped the bout.

Douglas, one of the most talented young female fighters in the world of boxing, is now 6-0 with two wins by knockout.

In undercard action, surging cruiserweight Travis “Seever” Reeves stopped Ariel Espinal in the third round, unbeaten junior welterweight Seth “Killer B” Billups overcame a knockdown to score a second round stoppage over Ty Felton, featherweight Alexandru Marin stopped Rasool Shakur in the third, light heavyweight Larry Pryor demolished Santos Martinez in the first round and junior welterweight Henry Goss drew with Anthony Dave.

Dubbed as “World Championship Boxing”, the card was promoted by Ponytail Promotions.

Founded in 2014 by respected Baltimore-based boxing businessman James Hogan, Ponytail Promotions envisions becoming one of the top promotional firms in the United States. With a keen interest in both male and female fighters, Ponytail Promotions will run a total of 10-12 shows per year in Maryland, Virginia, Washington DCand North Carolina.

Tori Nelson: A Champion’s Struggle

For Immediate Release

Ashburn, VA (September 24, 2014) – Tori Nelson is an undefeated multi-division world champion that earned her place on pound for pound lists. Based on her impressive success, most would believe she’s a full-time boxer that is well off financially like her male counterparts.

Unfortunately for Nelson, that’s far from the truth and every day is a challenge.

While virtually all of America is asleep, Nelson is up at 4:30 to get ready for her 5:30 am job as a waitress. When her shift ends at 2 pm, she returns home to sneak in a nap until her kids arrive home from school. At that time, she helps her children with homework and prepares their dinner. Around 6 pm, she goes to the boxing gym for 2-plus hours of intense training before returning home, reading the bible and going to bed. The 37-year-old Virginian repeats this four times a week.

“Being an undefeated world champion means everything to me but it doesn’t have the same meaning in the boxing world,” Nelson said honestly of her situation. “(Female fighters) have to work harder than the males do and we have to take care of our children but we don’t make anywhere near the money the men do. For some reason, we (don't receive) the same recognition and its unfortunate.”

Though some in her situation may have hung up the gloves in favor of a more traditional 9-5 job, Nelson never considered that because she’s gone through far too much to let life’s daily challenges deter her.

“I’m a single mother and I have to do this for my kids. My children have to eat and one of them is heading to college soon, so there’s a lot on my plate. It’s not easy but this struggle isn’t just for me, it’s for my children and my fans. People are also spending their hard earned money to see me fight so I have to do my part and give them a show. I owe it to them.”

On Saturday evening at the ABC Sports Complex in Springfield, VA, Nelson defends her title against tough Arlene Blencowe. On paper, Blencowe doesn’t have a big record but she’s already fought and beaten quality opponents. She’s also a successful mixed martial artist, winning four of her last five bouts in the octagon.

“I expect her to be very strong with great conditioning,” Nelson said of Blencowe. “She’s probably an inside fighter and that’s great for me because (I’d love if she) stands in the pocket! I trained very hard because I expect her to be very physically tough because of her all-around fighting background and the opponents she’s boxed. She’s traveling very far for this fight so I know she’s coming to win. My trainer told me you box a fighter and fight a boxer, so either way, I’m confident that I’ll win impressively on Saturday lord willing.”

The Nelson-Blencowe bout is for the WIBA welterweight title and serves as the ten round main event of Ponytail Promotions’ “World Championship Boxing”. The card features seven undercard matches including top prospect Tyrieshia Douglas, Seth Billups, Alexandru Marin, Travis Reeves, Larry Pryor, Edgar Torres and Henry Goss in separate bouts.

Flores drills McNnemar in 2. Wants Marco Huck!

SPRINGFIELD, MO (October 17, 2012)--On Friday night October 6th, Number-one  WBO world rated cruiserweight and NABA, NABO and WBC continental Americas  champ BJ Flores (28-1-1, 18 KO’s) scored another knockout victory when he  stopped once-beaten David McNemar in front of a packed house at the Shrine  Mosque in Springfield Missouri.

Flores has now set his sights on highly regarded WBO champion Marco Huck of Germany

“He is the champion and I am WBO #1 challenger. It’s no secret this is a fight I have wanted for a very long time”, said Flores

Over the last fourteen months, Flores has fought four times and looked very  good in those outings. Flores has shown good power by knocking out 3 of his  last 4 opponents and scoring multiple knockdowns in those fights. Flores  says, "I know I needed to get better and improve. In order to be successful  in this game you have to stay active and stay busy. Unfortunately this was  something that I wasn’t able to accomplish before but now with the hometown  crowd and fan base we can do shows in Springfield and keep me active and  busy".

If you look a bit deeper into Flores last 4 fights there is a little more than meets the eye. Nick Iannuzzi (16-2) who was coming off a VERY close and controversial loss to number-three world rated power puncher Lateef Kayode.  Flores hurt Iannuzzi badly and knocked him down in the first round and battered him until the referee stopped the contest in the fifth. Flores dominated journeyman Paul Jeanette (12-3) for ten rounds by scores of 100-90 on all three cards. Next up was Hugo Pineda (39-5) who was coming off an eight round decision loss to undefeated Russian prospect Jimmy Kapanov.

Flores dropped Pineda twice and scored a stoppage victory in the sixth round. Next up was McNemar (13-1). Flores dropped McNemar twice and the referee calling it off at 2:14 of the second round. McNemar was coming off a very close loss to undefeated and world rated Ryan Coyne (18-0). This type of opposition can keep Flores sharp and ready for the big opportunity when it comes.

“After Huck KO’s Firat Arslan I want him next. Huck is very tough and very well-conditioned. He is very strong and very confident. He has a great team around him and I respect him as a fighter. But any time he has fought anyone who can box he has had troubles. Steve Cunningham, Denis Lebedev and Ola Afalobi all gave him fits. I have quietly changed my entire boxing style. I have tried to fly under the radar and go back to the drawing board and get better. I have fought 4 times in the last year and feel sharp and ready. I have 3 KO’s against decent opposition. I WANT a step up! NO ONE will expect me to beat him. It will be an absolute shocker!!

There are some really good champions in this division and I know I will have to be at my best if I want to defeat a good champion in his home country. This will bring out the best in me. Sometimes I will go run 5 miles in the middle of the night just to keep me hungry. I work out at all times of the day and put my body through all kinds of torture to make sure I am ready when my moment arrives. Nothing worth having can be easy. I have taken my bumps and bruises and learned a lot in my professional career. I think about it every day and work tirelessly so that I can be prepared when my moment comes”.

BJ FLORES TO NOW FACE DAVID MCNEMAR THIS FRIDAY IN SPRINGFIELD, MO

SPRINGFIELD, MO (October 3, 2012)—Once-beaten David McNemar has stepped in for the injured Ahmed Samir and will take on world rated BJ Flores in a ten round Cruiserweight bout that will be contested for the NABA and NABO titles at the Shrine Mosque.
McNemar of Parkersburg, West Virginia has a record of 13-1 with ten knockouts, is coming off his lone defeat which was a razor thin unanimous decision to undefeated and world ranked Ryan Coyne (16-0) on June 25, 2011.
The decision was close to the point that the verdict was booed in Coyne’s hometown of St. Louis.
This will be the fourth fight in fifteen months for Flores (27-1-1, 17 KO’s) as he has scored stoppages over Nick Iannuzzi (16-2) & in his last bout he stopped Hugo Pineda (39-5-1) on January 28th in Springfield.
“I am looking forward to fighting in front of my hometown fans again”, said Flores.
“After Samir pulled out, we offered the fight to five or six undefeated guys but McNemar was the one who stepped up to the plate and accepted. I know he is coming to win, so I expect a tough fight but at the end of the day I am ranked very high across the board and it’s very possible and even likely that I will fight for a title in my next fight , so I can’t look past McNemar
More than 2900 fans are expected at the Shrine Mosque and all the high end $120 tickets are gone. The fight will be televised by local CBS affiliate KOZL

MMA’S BEST-KEPT SECRET IS ABOUT TO BE UNLEASHED

Strikeforce veteran Chris Gruetzemacher ready to explode

Ft. Lauderdale, Florida (USA): In a sport experiencing global growth like mixed martial arts, young athletes are entering the fight game in droves. As a result, it’s becoming more and more difficult to make oneself stand out amongst the pack. Every combat athlete needs that signature win to help get their name out there.

It looks like Chris “Gritz” Gruetzemacher (11-1) may have grabbed that win this past weekend.

At ShoFIGHT 20 in Springfield, Missouri, “Gritz,” a one-time Strikeforce fighter, took on UFC veteran Roli Delgado. In the biggest test of his young career, Apex Sports Agency fighter Gruetzemacher dominated, utilizing elbows on the feet and on the mat en route to a 3rd round TKO stoppage.

Regarding his big win, Chris said, “I felt great. I hit a speed bump in the beginning of the first round, but other than that I felt solid.

“It was very much a one-sided [butt]-whoopin.’”

After starting out 1-1 in his career, “Gritz” has now secured ten straight wins, including eight finishes. With such an exemplary record, it can only be a matter of time before an organization like the UFC comes calling. Is “Gritz” ready?

“I do feel that I am ready for the big show. More than anything, I want my opportunity to showcase what I can do, and to have my name in the big lights. I got big goals, and for any of those things to happen, fighting in the UFC is a must.”

Apex Sports Agency has quickly garnered a strong reputation in the MMA world, working with stars on the rise such as UFC fighters Chris Clements, Clifford Starks, Carlo Prater, and Matt Lucas, as well as established fighters like Karo Parisyan, Drew Fickett, Jorge Gurgel, and Zoila Gurgel.
