The Ultimate Fighter: Mean Girls

By: Chris Huntemann, Columnist

When UFC announced that its 20th season of The Ultimate Fighter would exclusively feature women’s strawweight (115 pounds) fighters, with the winner of that season becoming the inaugural UFC women’s strawweight champion, I thought it was a significant moment in mixed martial arts. It definitely represented a vast departure from UFC president Dana White’s previous comments that women would never compete in UFC.

While the first half of the strawweight season unfolded with relatively little drama, it has definitely ramped up lately. I feel some of the competitors on this season are doing damage not only to themselves, but for women athletes in general. This season looks less Ultimate Fighter with each episode and more like a cheap reenactment of the film “Mean Girls.”

This season also highlights some of the negative stereotypes of women. Accusations of bullying and “catty” behavior by some of the competitors have become the preeminent storyline on this season of The Ultimate Fighter. The word "bitches" is also prominent on the show.

A “clique” has formed in the episodes we've seen so far, led by Angela Magana and featuring other competitors like Bec Rawlings, Carla Esparza and Felice Herrig, that dubbed themselves the “Skrapettes” (a name I dislike almost as much as “The Four Horsewomen”). The brunt of their behavior seems to be directed at fighters Heather Clark and Tecia Torres, though Torres achieved some measure of retribution by defeating Rawlings in the season’s final preliminary fight.

Magana, Rawlings and others questioned the severity of Clark’s knee injury that she divulged during the show, and seemed to continue expressing skepticism after Clark revealed she had a torn ACL. The group also displayed hostile behavior toward Torres to try and get her to move out of the bedroom she shared with Rawlings prior to their preliminary fight and booing her after her victory. I don’t seem to be alone in the belief that bullying has become a problem during this season, and it has generated a backlash that also included some awful language:

At best, Magana and the others were noncommittal about their behavior:

The narrative by Rawlings, Esparza and the others that UFC purposely edited the footage to portray them in a negative light doesn’t pass the smell test, simply because it’s not a denial. They haven’t really disputed that they engaged in the behavior they were accused of. In my opinion, this behavior is a real detriment to women’s MMA.

MMA is a brutal sport, and not everyone is going to be nice or display good sportsmanship. However, women have worked twice as hard, if not more, to be considered equals to men in all athletics. Being on national television, in a growing sport that becomes more popular each and every day, and reinforcing the stereotype that women can’t get along, talk trash behind each other’s backs and sometimes form cliques at the exclusion of others, damages the fighters’ credibility and that of their sport.

Instead of focusing on some of the extraordinary performances of this season, including Randa Markos’ advancement and amazing submission victory (despite being one of the lower seeds) and Jessica Penne showing why she is one of the favorites, the dominant narrative is the fighters bullying each other.

Instead of focusing on some of the fighters' more inspiring backgrounds, including Rawlings being able to escape from an abusive relationship, Aisling Daly coming up with other Irish fighters like Conor McGregor and Cathal Pendred, Alex Chambers having an education in science, engineering and astrophysics but instead deciding to pursue a career in fighting to Magana overcoming being born addicted to drugs and having two addicts for parents, the focus is on behavior that makes no positive contribution to what these women are trying to accomplish.

The 20th season of The Ultimate Fighter should be a landmark moment for women’s MMA. In many ways, it still is. But the behavior of some is threatening the progress of many in a sport that’s still fighting for respect.

Were Felice Herrig and Graham Patrick Martin Separated at Birth?

Felice Herrig is a contestant on the current season of The Ultimate Fighter on Fox Sports. She is a female mixed martial artist with an upbeat personality and a 9-5 pro record. Graham Patrick Martin is an actor I first saw in his role on TNT's Major Crimes. When I later saw Herrig on TUF, I couldn't help thinking she looked like Martin, and putting their pictures side by side makes you wonder: Is Martin Herrig's brother from another mother? You be the judge.

Dana White Admits He Knows Nothing

Dana White had a bit of a Freudian slip a few weeks ago on The Ultimate Fighter. Click on the link above to hear him admit how he couldn't even effectively corner a fighter. Yet, he thinks it's OK to badmouth the efforts of countless fighters on his company's roster. Too bad the UFC President isn't someone who has actual fighting experience of some kind and not just boxercise instruction. If you have a Twitter account, please retweet this.

NEF FIGHTER MATT DESROCHES ANNOUNCED AS CAST MEMBER OF THE UFC’S “THE ULTIMATE FIGHTER”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Rumford, Maine (December 7, 2013) – New England Fights Mixed Martial Arts (NEF MMA) is proud to announce that former NEF fighter Matt DesRoches (4-0) was recently announced as a cast member of The Ultimate Fighting Championship’s (UFC) famed “The Ultimate Fighter” reality series “TUF Nations: Canada vs. Australia.” UFC officials announced DesRoches as a member of the cast last Thursday.

“TUF Nations: Canada vs. Australia” is the newest iteration of “The Ultimate Fighter.” Eight middleweights and eight welterweights will be divided into two teams based on their nationalities. Filmed just north of Montreal, the 12-episode season will air on Wednesdays on Fox Sports 1 starting January 15th and will culminate with a three-hour live finale next year. It was announced that DesRoches will compete as a welterweight on the show.

Matt DesRoches’ last fight came when he made his NEF MMA debut last summer at NEF’s “Nations Collide: Canadian Invasion” event. DesRoches submitted Team Irish’s Jon Lemke (3-1) via armbar at1:47 of the first round and handed Lemke the lone loss of his amateur and professional careers.

“Great shows like New England Fights are vital to athletes’ development,” stated Rob Veevers, DesRoches’ manager and the owner of Banzuke Athlete Management. “NEF runs a very professional organization and treats the fighters exceptionally well. We are very proud to have worked with NEF MMA for Matt’s last fight and I strongly believe that opportunity helped propel Matt towards his spot on Team Canada on the UFC's ‘TUF Nations: Canada vs Australia.’”

“We are delighted to see another NEF veteran snatched up by the big show,” stated NEF co-owner and promoter Nick DiSalvo. “We pledged to fans that we would bring in the best talent to compete in NEF and DesRoches being signed to compete on the next season of TUF is just further proof of that commitment.”

“It was obvious from his performance against Lemke that he was destined for big things,” stated NEF co-owner and matchmaker Matt Peterson. “We were excited for Des Green when he signed with Bellator and we share that same enthusiasm for Matt with the news of his move to TUF. I’m confident that he will perform on the show and show the skill and aptitude worthy of securing a UFC contract.”

Fans can follow Matt DesRoches on twitter @matthangon and "like" his Facebook Fan Page "Matt DesRoches MMA Fighter.” Fans can also follow Banzuke Athlete Management @banzukeathletic and find “Banzuke Athlete Management” on Facebook. “TUF Nations: Canada vs Australia” airs January 15th on Fox Sports 1 at 10pm EST.

NEF MMA's next event, “NEF XII,” is scheduled to take place on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston, Maine with a bell time of 7:00 pm.  Maine State MMA Middleweight Champion Jesse Peterson (7-4) will return to action for the first time in nearly a year.  Tickets start at just $25 and are on sale now at www.TheColisee.com or by calling The Colisee box office at 207.783.2009 x 525. World Series of Fighting signs "The Ultimate Figther 18" competitor Cody Bollinger

World Series of Fighting is proud to announce the addition of Cody "Bam Bam" Bollinger (14-2) to the company's bantamweight roster.

The 22-year-old Californian signed a multi-fight deal with World Series of Fighting and is expected to debut for the promotion in early 2014.

"Cody is an extremely talented fighter, and we're thrilled to have him on board with our company," World Series of Fighting President Ray Sefo said. "Cody has recently endured some tough times in his career, but we believe he is highly skilled and has a bright future in front of him. I can't wait to see what he can accomplish in the World Series of Fighting decagon."

Despite his young age, Bollinger has been competing professionally for seven years. Bollinger's father signed a waiver for him to make his professional debut in 2006 at just 15 years old. He's since built an impressive 14-2 mark, including five wins by submission and another four by knockout.

Most recently, Bollinger was a contestant on "The Ultimate Fighter 18," where he defeated Rafael de Freitas to earn his way on to the show. However, he failed to make weight for his next fight with Anthony Gutierrez and was eliminated from the show.

"It is not every day that one finds himself living a dream that turns into a nightmare," Bollinger wrote in his Revgear Sports blog.  I knew heading into the show that this was going to be the hardest weight cut of my career. ... I missed weight and have zero excuses about it, I didn't adjust well enough to the situation I was put in and paid for that tremendously."

Bollinger will now get a second chance to make a first impression.

"When one dream ends, you make the shift to chase a new one," Bollinger said.

Ray Wood Injured and Out of NEF X; Lemke-Ortolani Bumped Up to Main Event

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Lewiston, Maine (August 28, 2013) – New England Fights MMA (NEF MMA) tonight announced that Maine State Featherweight Champion Ray Wood (4-0) is injured and unable to defend his title on September 21 against Joe Pingitore (4-0-1).  The bout was the scheduled main event of the promotion's NEF X event at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston.

"It's disappointing, because it had all the promise of a great fight, but injuries are part of the game," said NEF MMA co-owner and promoter Nick DiSalvo when reached for comment.  "The Wood-Pingitore fight will happen in the future.  When exactly that will be depends on the extent of Ray's injury and a recovery timeframe.  NEF wishes Ray a speedy recovery, and we look forward to seeing him back in the cage soon."

NEF MMA executives would not comment on the specifics of Wood's injury. DiSalvo did, however, go on to say that the co-main event bout between Jon Lemke (3-1) and John Ortolani (7-7) for the vacant Maine State Lightweight Championship would be bumped to the main event slot.  In addition, a featured welterweight contest between Jarod Lawton (3-1) and Leon Davis (4-2) would be moved into the co-main event position.

“NEF X” is scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 21, 2013 at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston, Maine.  Tickets start at just $25 and are on sale now at www.TheColisee.com.   The card will feature a 155-pound bout between Jon Lemke (3-1) and John Ortolani (7-7) to fill the recently vacated Maine State Lightweight Championship. For more information on the event and the full fight card, please visit the promotion's website atwww.NewEnglandFights.com.  In addition, you can watch NEF MMA videos at www.youtube.com/NEFMMA, follow them on Twitter @nefights and join the official Facebook group “New England Fights.”

NEF MMA Announces Full Fight Card for September 21's NEF X Event

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Lewiston, Maine (August 22, 2013) - New England Fights Mixed Martial Arts (NEF MMA) today announced the full fight card for the fight promotion's September 21 event.  Entitled "NEF X," the event will mark NEF MMA's return to the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston and the third and final event of the mixed martial arts promotions “Summer Vacationland Fight Tour.”

"It feels good to be going back home," said NEF MMA promoter and co-owner Nick DiSalvo.  "We took the show on the road with events in Bangor and Biddeford and now we're back in Lewiston.  I personally can't wait to get back in the Colisee to present our biggest and best card to date."

NEF MMA went out of its way in putting the fight card together for its fans. Known for marathon-length shows, and wanting to do something special for its tenth-anniversary event, the fight promotion made 35 fights for the card, including 14 professional bouts.

"Like we do with every card, we wanted to really give the fans as much action as we could for their dollar," stated NEF matchmaker and co-owner Matt Peterson. "In this economy, people work hard for their money and we want to give them as much great entertainment as possible with tickets marked low.  From top to bottom, this is the most well-matched card we've put on to date.  Any fan of MMA in Maine, or anywhere in New England for that matter, won't want to miss this show."

The top of the card is headlined by two title fights. The first fight features Bucksport's Ray “All Business” Wood (4-0) defending his Maine State MMA Featherweight Title against fellow undefeated 145-pound competitor Joe Pingitore (4-0-1) of Rhode Island.  In the second title fight, to fill the vacant Maine State MMA Lightweight Championship, Jon Lemke (3-1), based out of Marcus Davis's Team Irish, will meet Massachusetts native and professional lacrosse player John Ortolani (7-7).

In other feature bouts on the pro-side of the card: UFC veteran and recent contestant on The Ultimate Fighter, Jimmy Quinlan (3-1), will see action against the ever-popular Luc Bondole (2-0) in a Middleweight contest; Jarod "Last Minute" Lawton (3-1) of Augusta brings his full arsenal of submissions to the cage when he takes on Leon Davis (4-2) in the Welterweight division; and featherweights Damon Owens (1-0) and Josh Parker (4-6) will square off.
