Kongo v. Graham for HW Final Plus Warren vs. Marx headline Bellator’s Return to Winstar World Casino Friday, November 8th Live On Spike TV

Newport Beach, CA. (October 30, 2013) – The Toughest Tournament in Sports continues Friday, November 8th as Winstar World Casino plays host to the Bellator Heavyweight, Bantamweight and Middleweight Tournament Finals. Tickets for the event are on sale now and can be purchased at Ticketmaster.com or by visiting the Winstar World Casino Box Office. The event will broadcast live at 9 p.m ET/8 p.m. CT on Spike TV.

After punching his ticket to the tournament final with a devastating combination of strikes and knees for a TKO win over Mark Godbeer, Cheick Kongo will now face Australia’s own Peter Graham in the Heavyweight Tournament Finals after Vinicius Spartan suffered a knee injury during training. Graham picked up his first Bellator victory with a tournament qualifier victory over Eric Prindle at Bellator 104, and will now take his place in the Heavyweight Finals, one win away from battling for the Heavyweight title. With his sights on set on capturing his first tournament crown, Kongo will have to put a stop to Graham’s current eight-fight win streak.

“I want to fight the best in Bellator so I can be the best,” Kongo said. “When I try to do things as a competitor, I want to be the best. I messed up before because I wasn't focused like I've been from the beginning. But, now … I will be the best. It's my time. I came to Bellator for the opportunity to show the best Cheick Kongo. And that's it.”

On the road to become only the second fighter in Bellator history to win a tournament in two different weight classes, “The Baddest Man on the Planet” Joe Warren returns to the Bellator cage and will face MMA veteran Travis Marx the Bellator Bantamweight Tournament Final.

“The Baddest Man on the Planet is back,” Warren said. “I’m one win away from getting back to exactly where I want to be, fighting for that belt. This is what I work for, this is what I train for, and nothing is going to get in the way of that.”

The night will also feature the Bellator Middleweight Tournament Final in a fight between Brennan Ward and Denmark’s own Mikkel Parlo. After finishing both of his opponents in the opening and semifinal rounds, Ward doesn’t see his fight with Parlo ending any differently.

“I am super amped up to fight Parlo in the finals,” Ward said. “I feel like there is no way he can beat me. I am always looking to finish and that is the only way to go. Go big or go home!”

“We’ve now got three huge Bellator Tournament Finals featured on an incredibly deep card November 8th from WinStar World Casino, this is going to be an awesome night of fights on Spike,” Bellator CEO & Chairman Bjorn Rebney said.

Bellator Bantamweight Champion Eduardo Dantas Injured, Scheduled To Return In Early 2014

Newport Beach, CA. (October 9, 2013) – Bellator Bantamweight Champion Eduardo Dantas has suffered an ankle injury that will sideline the Brazlian phenom until after the new year. Undefeated at 5-0 inside the Bellator cage, Dantas will now recover and prepare to face Bellator Tournament winner Rafael Silva in 2014, with the winner of Joe Warren vs. Travis Marx next in line for their rightful Bellator title shot.

Only 24, Dantas stormed through his first Bellator Tournament with victories over Wilson Reis, Ed West and Alexis Vila, and eventually collected gold with his dominating finish over then Champion Zach Makovsky before defending the title against Marcos Galvao.

“Eduardo Dantas is one of the most explosive Champions in MMA, and while this injury is a setback, we all expect Eduardo back, better than ever in 2014,” said Bellator Chairman & CEO Bjorn Rebney.

Straus captures tournament championship, Galvao moves to finals of Season 6 Bantamweight Tournament from Caesars Atlantic City

Zaromskis and Held prove victorious with impressive wins

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ. (May 11, 2012) — The Bellator Featherweight title has a new challenger as Daniel Straus became the Bellator Season 6 Featherweight Tournament Champion with a dominating victory over Marlon Sandro. In additional tournament action, Marcos Galvao will move on to the finals of the Bellator Season 6 Bantamweight Tournament while Marius Zaromskis and Marcin Held picked up victories at Bellator 68 from Caesars Atlantic City in New Jersey LIVE on MTV2 and in HD on EPIX.

“Daniel Straus was able to break through with a huge win in a loaded featherweight tournament and earn his shot at the world title,” Bellator Chairman & CEO Bjorn Rebney said. “Marcin Held was able to continue his assault on the legs of his opponents with another submission victory and Marcos Galvao continues to impress with another close fought victory over Travis Marx.”

Two of the top featherweights in the world met inside the Bellator cage as Marlon Sandro and Daniel Straus fought with the winner claiming the Bellator Season 6 Featherweight Tournament Championship and a $100,000 payday. Known for his aggressive striking and exceptional cardio, Straus showed early on why he made it to the finals of the Featherweight Tournament. While Sandro appeared hesitant at times, Straus was constantly moving forward and pushing the action for the duration of the fight. Landing the crisper strikes, Straus found a way to control Sandro while both striking and in the clinch. After three entertaining rounds, a new tournament champion was crowned as Daniel Straus walked away with the unanimous decision victory.

“I’m going to keep improving, I’m going to get better,” said Straus. “I have to go back to the drawing board and prepare for my title shot.”

With the unanimous decision win, Daniel Straus becomes the Bellator Season 6 Featherweight Tournament Champion and earns the biggest victory of his career. His record improves to 20-4 while his opponent, Marlon Sandro, loses for just the fourth time in 26 contests.

For Marcos Galvao and Travis Marx, a victory in the semifinals of the Bellator Season 6 Bantamweight Tournament would bring them one step closer to an opportunity to face Bellator Bantamweight World Champion Eduardo “Dudu” Dantas. Marx showed occasional moments of dominance; however, Galvao appeared to be in control for most of the fight. Galvao, who clearly had the advantage in the stand-up, landed combinations of punches, kicks to the body and knees. Although Marx attempted to press Galvao against the cage and secure a takedown, Galvao was able to stuff all but one. After three intense, action-packed rounds, the cageside judges scored the fight in favor of Marcos Galvao.

“It’s been my dream since I was a kid,” said Galvao. “I know I’m going to win this tournament.”
With the victory, Marcos Galvao will now move to the final round of the Bellator Season 6 Bantamweight Tournament and face the winner of the Luis Nogueira vs. Hiroshi Nakamura later this year. His record improves to 12-5. Travis Marx loses for just the fourth time in his professional career as his record falls to 19-4.
Following his last fight inside the Bellator cage, a split decision victory over Phillipe Nover at Bellator 59, 20-year-old Polish lightweight Marcin Held looked to make a greater impression Friday night against New Jersey’s own, Derrick Kennington. The fight started with Kennington moving forward, looking to keep the fight standing. After landing a kick to the body of Held, Kennington was forced to defend a takedown, but Held quickly latched on to Kennington’s leg and secured a leg lock. Kennington was forced to tap at 2:08 of the first round.
“I wanted to fight standing up, but my opponent was better than me there,” said Held. “I tried my strength, which was the leg lock, and it worked.”

With the submission win, Marcin Held earned his second straight victory in the Bellator cage and improved his record to 13-2 in his emerging career. Kennington, dropped to 6-3 in his Bellator debut.

In the first televised fight of the evening, Lithuanian welterweight Marius Zaromskis made his highly-anticipated Bellator debut opposite hard-hitting Bellator veteran, Waachiim Spiritwolf. In the first round, Spiritwolf was able to utilize the clinch as he pinned Zaromskis against the cage. A Zaromskis elbow opened a deep cut near the right eye of Spiritwolf that would later prove to be pivotal. The second round appeared more one-sided for Spiritwolf than the first. After landing a series of punches to the jaw of Zaromskis, Spiritwolf began to unload on his hurt opponent but was unable to put him away. However, between the second and third round, the ringside physician stopped the fight, citing the cut near the eye of Spiritwolf.

With the doctor stoppage victory, Marius Zaromskis earned his first win under the Bellator banner and improved to 17-6 overall. Waachim Spiritwolf fell to 9-10-1 in a hard-fought performance.

Askren keeps title, Sandro first to Season 6 Featherweight Finals at Bellator 64 from Caesars Windsor

Plus, Marx and Nakamura advance to Bellator Season 6 Bantamweight Semis

CHICAGO, Ill. (April 6, 2012) — Bellator Fighting Championships made its first ever trip to Winsor, Ontario and they brought with them a stacked card that included Ben Askren’s dominant victory over Douglas Lima as well as a Featherweight Tournament Semifinal victory for Marlon Sandro. Additionally, Travis Marx and Hiroshi Nakamura became the first two to advance to the semifinal round of the Bellator Bantamweight Tournament Friday night at Bellator 64 from Caesars Windsor in Windsor, Ontario LIVE on MTV2 and in HD on EPIX.
In the main event of the evening, the Bellator Welterweight Title was on the line as defending champion Ben Askren faced off against Season 5 Welterweight Tournament Winner Douglas Lima. Quickly becoming a staple of Askren fights, the five rounds were dominated by the two-time National wrestling champion. Frustrated, Lima attempted submissions off his back but failed to overcome the grinding style of the U.S. Olympian. With “Funky” holding steady in the dominant position throughout the duration of the fight, the outcome was clear as the champion won every round on the judges’ scorecards.

“This packed house at Caesars Windsor saw why Ben Askren is widely considered one of the best welterweights on the planet,” said Bellator Chairman & CEO Bjorn Rebney. “Ben put on a display of complete dominance tonight, and will be a force in this division for a long time.

With the unanimous decision win, Ben Askren successfully defended the Bellator Welterweight Championship and moved his record to a perfect 10-0. Lima, defeated for the first time in over two years, fell to 21-5.

When it was announced that Marlon Sandro would face his fellow countryman “Popo” Bezerra in the first semifinal fight of the Bellator Season 6 Featherweight Tournament, many fans circled April 6 on their calendars. Through the first two rounds of the contest, Sandro was constantly landing the inside low kicks while “Popo” was looking to counter. Nevertheless, the third round saw a much different Bezerra. Sensing the end of the fight, “Popo” aggressively pursued Sandro, landing solid strikes that moved Sandro backwards. However, it would not be enough as the bell to end the fight sounded, and Sandro was awarded the split-decision victory.

“This guy is a tough guy. I came here to put on a good show for everybody,” an ecstatic Sandro said of the win.

With the split-decision victory, Sandro becomes the first entrant in the Bellator Season Six Featherweight Tournament Finals and improves his record to 22-3. “Popo,” who lost for just the second time in his career, tastes defeat for the first time since 2009.

For Bellator newcomers Travis Marx and Masakatsu Ueda, the opportunity to fight for a future bantamweight title fueled an outstanding back-and-forth affair that had the fans at Caesars Windsor on the edge of their seats. In the opening frame, Marx landed a huge slam that led to effective use of ground and pound while the striking seemed to favor Ueda, who was landing plenty of leg kicks. In the second, both fighters showed excellent grappling skills that had the Windsor crowd on their feet. Ueda landed more kicks to the body; however, Marx was more dominant on the ground. The action continued throughout the final round as both fighters attempted to out-grapple the other until the bell signaled the end of the fight. When the final scorecards from the judges were read, Travis Marx walked away with the hard-earned decision victory.

“I never perceived myself as the underdog from day one. I came out here wanting to win it, and that’s what I did,” said a satisfied Marx.

With the unanimous decision win, Travis Marx punched his ticket to the semifinals of the Bellator Season 6 Bantamweight Tournament and earned the 19th win of his career.

In the first quarterfinal fight of the Season 6 Bantamweight Tournament, undefeated Rodrigo Lima and his opponent, Hiroshi “Iron” Nakamura were both looking to send a message to the rest of the tournament field. In the first round, an aggressive Lima found himself on the mat early after a takedown from Nakamura. While still being active from the guard, Lima attempted submissions while Nakamura worked for a better position. After a one-point deduction in the second round for an illegal blow to the groin, Nakamura again scored a takedown and remained in the top position. Lima, comfortable off his back, attempted submissions and tried to get the finish. In the third, another Nakamura takedown led to much of the same. Both fighters were aggressive on the ground until the sound of the final bell. When the judges’ scorecards were read, all three scored the bout in favor of Hiroshi Nakamura.

“This is my first time fighting in North America so I was feeling uncomfortable in the beginning,” Nakamura said. “But I’m feeling very good about going to the second round.”

With the unanimous decision win, Hiroshi Nakamura improved his record to 15-5 and advanced to the semifinals of the Bellator Season 6 Bantamweight Tournament. Lima, who lost for the first time in his career, fell to 10-1.

Bellator 65 will take place on April 13th from Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City featuring the Bantamweight World Championship fight between Bellator Season 5 Bantamweight Tournament Winner Eduardo “Dudu” Dantas and reigning Bellator Bantamweight Champion Zach “Fun Size” Makovsky.
