Khosrow Semnani Leads the Way, Will We Follow?

The challenge has been made!

Mr. Khosrow Semnani, his Family Foundation and others are leading the way financially. Now It's up to me, to you and the wrestling community to continue to the fight, to write letters and articles, to engage people in the conversation as to why wrestling is, Why wrestling should remain a leadship sport in the Olympic Games past 2016.

Khosrow Semnani is a naturalized American citizen who immigrated from Iran to the state of Utah where he has become a business, civic and philanthropic leader.  He established the Semnani Family Foundation 20 years ago and has directed its global efforts to assist those in need as a result of natural and man-made disasters.  Mr. Semnani’s contributions include a wide range of charitable, medical and civic projects in Utah and assistance for those suffering from hunger, poverty and the ravages of storms and wars around the world.

Mr. Semnani determined that the campaign to restore wrestling to the Olympic schedule was consistent with his personal and the Semnani Foundation’s mission.  He has urged government and private sector leaders to remember that not only does wrestling enjoy its unprecedented historical role, but also is the sport of opportunity everywhere from a college campus to a poor village in any country.  He has given the analogy with great acceptance of how many can use wrestling to expand their horizons and escape the poorest living conditions, not unlike the roots of basketball in many of America’s cities.

Most recently, Mr. Semnani’s generous commitment resulted in his family foundation’s underwriting of the proposed Iranian-U.S. wrestling competition scheduled for Los Angeles.  When circumstances changed, he helped lead the transformation of the events in Los Angeles and extended a personal invitation to the Iranian team to return as his guests to that city.  In addition, he supported the United Nations luncheon and briefing in New York City.

Khosrow Semnani earned dual Bachelor of Science Degrees in Chemistry and Physics from Salt Lake City’s Westminster College in 1972.  He later earned a Masters of Engineering Administration Degree from the University of Utah in 1977.  Mr. Semnani was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Science degree from Southern Utah University in May 2005 for his outstanding work in the field of nuclear waste management.  He also served for eight years as Vice Chairman and for three years as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Encyclopedia Iranica at Columbia University.
