University of Iowa national champion Brent Metcalf won a gold medal at 65 kg/143 lbs. at the FILA Golden Grand Prix Finals on Friday in Baku, Azerbaijan. Metcalf scored six unanswered points in the second period to defeat Magomed Muslimov of Azerbaijan, 6-6, in the finals. Muslimov led 6-0 at the break after scoring three first-period takedowns. In the second period, Metcalf scored four points on a front headlock roll, then added another takedown to tie the score, 6-6. He won on criteria by having the highest scoring move with his four-pointer. Metcalf, who has qualified for his third U.S. World Team, worked his way to the finals with a pair of wins. Mike Dixon enters his tenth season with the Monarch wrestling program as associate head coach in 2014-15, after serving as an assistant coach from 2007-14 and as a volunteer assistant for the 2005-06 campaign. With head coach Steve Martin, Dixon has helped put Old Dominion on the map nationally over the last nine seasons. The 2013-14 season gave the Monarchs six NCAA Qualifiers after all finished 4th or better at the MAC Championships in the team's inaugural season in the Mid-American Conference. However, the former Buckeye big man recently experienced that sensation at high speed on an Ohio interstate… and walked away. Johnny Cobb is a Texas wrestling legend. A native of Amarillo, Cobb was a three-time District Champion at Tascosa High School in the mid-1960s, losing only one high school match in three years of competition. He went on to wrestle at Oklahoma State University. After competing collegiately, he went on to be a two-time Texas High School Coach of the Year while at Amarillo's Tascosa High School. Cobb is a member of the Texas Wrestling Ring of Honor and the Texas chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater, Okla. One of the founding members of the Panhandle Amateur Wrestling Association, he also founded the first children's wrestling program in the panhandle of Texas at the Maverick Boys Club in 1971. Two-time All-America wrestler Alex Tirapelle has been named the 19th Roger Reina Head Coach of Wrestling in the history of the University of Pennsylvania. The announcement was made today by the University's new Director of Recreation and Intercollegiate Athletics, M. Grace Calhoun. "I am excited to welcome Alex to Penn," said Calhoun, who took over as Director on July 1. "During the interview process, his accomplishments both as a wrestler and as a coach stood out. On Friday, July 18th 2014, Wrestling superstar Diamond Dallas Page can officially add "Hall of Fame Inductee" to his already impressive pro wrestling legacy: Page is headed to Waterloo Iowa to be inducted into The National Wrestling Hall of Fame by wrestling icon Mick Foley at the Dan Gable Museum. Eastern Michigan University Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Heather Lyke announced Wednesday, June 25, that seven-year EMU Associate Head Wrestling Coach David Bolyard will take over the helm of the EMU wrestling program effective immediately. Sergei Alekseevich Beloglazov was born September 16, 1956 just prior to the height of the cold war. Kaliningrad, what is now part of the former Soviet Union was a tough place for he and his family to live. A budding soccer star as a youth, he and his Gold medal winning twin Anatoli quite literally stumbled into wrestling when shopping for soccer supplies at a sporting goods store. Derek St. John, 2013 NCAA Division I wrestling champ for the University of Iowa, is now an assistant coach at North Dakota State University, the Fargo-based school announced Monday. St. John replaces Bret Maughan, assistant wrestling coach at NDSU for the past 13 seasons, who announced in May he would not be back for the 2014-15 season. The former Hawkeye joins assistant coach Manny Rivera and head coach Roger Kish, both University of Minnesota graduates, on a staff that now features a distinctive Big Ten flavor.
