WEIGHTS, FINAL QUOTES FOR THOMAS DULORME & ARIS AMBRIZ, JONATHAN GONZALEZ & BILLY LYELL

ShoBox: The New Generation Doubleheader
Tomorrow/Friday, Feb. 17, Live on SHOWTIME® at 11 p.m. ET/PT
From Chumash Casino Resort, Santa Ynez, Calif.

SANTA YNEZ, Calif. (Feb. 16, 2012) –  Promising Puerto Rican boxers Thomas Dulorme  and  Jonathan Gonzalez put their unbeaten records on the line against Aris  Ambriz and Billy Lyell, respectively, in the co-featured 10-rounds bouts tomorrow/Friday, Feb. 17, on ShoBox: The New Generation live onSHOWTIME® (11 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast).

Dulorme (13-0, 10 KOs), of Carolina, Puerto Rico, will face Ambriz (16-2-1, 8 KOs) of Azusa, Calif., for the vacant North American Boxing Federation (NABF) welterweight title in the main event at Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, Calif. Gonzalez (14-0, 13 KOs), of San Juan, takes on Lyell (24-10-2, 5 KOs), of Youngstown, Ohio, in a 10-round junior middleweight match.

Dulorme (143 pounds), Ambriz (144 pounds) and Lyell (153 3/4 pounds) made weight on their initial attempts Thursday at Chumash. Gonzalez, making his first start since last June, tipped the scale at 157¼ on his first try, 1¼ pounds over the contracted weight. Gonzalez made weight -- 156 pounds – on his fifth attempt, which was about 80 minutes after his first try.

What the fighters said Thursday:

THOMAS DULORME

“I’m thankful for all the awards I’ve been getting, happy to finish school for now, and honored to be on SHOWTIME. As of right now, though, my total focus is on by boxing career. One of my dreams is to make it big in boxing and then go back to school.

“I wasn’t born in Puerto Rico but I’ve lived there almost my entire life and I feel that the people there have accepted me. In my heart I feel I represent Puerto Rico each time I get into the ring and in everything I do.

“I’m fighting a different guy on short notice but I feel good about this.  I was training for a left-hander but I’ve always sparred against both so fighting a right-hander will be OK.

“I’ve gone the distance my last two fights, but they were both great learning experiences. I feel I got tested and taken into deep, deep water in my last fight against (Charlie) Navarro but I learned to swim  that night.’’

ARIS AMBRIZ

“I took this fight on one week’s notice, but was preparing for a fight in early March so I am OK. My conditioning is fine. I feel really good and this is a good weight for me. I accepted the fight without ever seeing Dulorme, but I’ve watched tapes since and know he is a good fighter.

“This is a big opportunity for me, the biggest fight of my life, so I am going to get in there and fight hard. I know I need to apply pressure and throw non-stop punches, but still be able to avoid his punches.’’

JONATHAN GONZALEZ
"This is my first fight since last June. I was scheduled to fight in November but got very sick and was in bed for two days. I probably still could have fought in November and I wanted to fight, but my team said no.
“I went the distance in a fight for the first time in my last fight (against Richard Gutierrez on ShoBox)  and I’m happy that I did. I needed to prove to myself that I could do it. It was important for me to know I had the conditioning to do something I had never done before and that’s go 10 rounds. I was happy with the fight and with my performance.
“I feel I can do a lot of different things in the ring and on Friday I will just try and fight intelligently and win the fight round by round.
“I’m in against a good, tough opponent but I work hard every day for fights like this. I want to fight for a world title by early next year.’’
BILLY LYELL

“I’d never heard of Gonzalez but I saw in tapes that he was a good prospect who can punch a little bit. I was impressed.

“I’ve fought so many times in the local guy’s backyard, but this isn’t like fighting in Germany or Mexico. It’s not like Gonzalez is a hometown boy.

“I’m fighting for a ranking. One of the main things is to back him up and to be careful early. I’m fighting at a lower weight, a great weight for me, so I think I may surprise a few people with my power.

“I’ve had a lot of fights and I have a lot of experience. But it’s not like I’m 35. I’m only 27 and still feel I’m in my prime.’’

Mantequilla Gonzalez Looks to Make Statement Against Lyell

gonzalez new banner

Junior middleweight knockout artist Jonathan "Mantequilla" Gonzalez (14-0, 13 KOs) of San Juan, Puerto Rico, will be looking to make a statement to the boxing world when he appears live on ShoBox: The New Generation (11 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast) against former world title challenger Billy Lyell (24-10-2, 5 KOs) of Warren, Ohio, in the 10-round televised co-feature from the Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, California, this Friday, February 17.

Gonzalez vs. Lyell will serve as the chief supporting bout to the night's main event, featuring fellow Puerto Rican Thomas Dulorme (13-0, 10 KOs) taking on Aris Ambriz (16-2-1, 8 KOs) for the vacant North American Boxing Federation (NABF) welterweight title.

"I am no longer a prospect," maintains the 22-year old Gonzalez, "I am a contender for a world title and I will prove it with my performance."

Despite being rated WBC and WBO #7 in the world and #12 WBA, Gonzalez was recently named to ESPN Columnist Dan Rafael's Super 25 list of the best prospects of 2011.

"Although I was very happy to be considered one of the best young fighters of last year, it will be with this knockout of a tough opponent, who has done well against many world-class fighters, that I will step out of that role and into being considered a legitimate threat to beat any 154-lb champion."

27-year-old Lyell is not only the first fighter to beat once-promising "Irish" John Duddy, but also gave a very strong performance against current world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

This will be Gonzalez' second consecutive appearance on ShoBox. In his last fight in June, he scored a lopsided unanimous 10-round decision over durable trialhorse Richard Gutierrez. It was the first time he had gone the distance in his entire pro career.

"Lyell will not be so lucky to hear the final bell," sneered Gonzalez.
