Marcus Upshaw reborn for Oct. 23 fight vs. Aaron Pryor Jr.

MIAMI (Oct. 13, 2014) - Modern day road warrior Marcus "Arillius" Upshaw (17-13-2, 8 KOs) plans to jumpstart his career October 23 against fellow gatekeeper and upset specialist, Aaron Pryor Jr. (19-7, 12 KOs), in the 10-round main event on a private (no tickets sold or media coverage) Alarm Charity Boxing fundraiser event at Renaissance Mayflower Hotel in Washington D.C. "I've fought everybody," Upshaw said from training camp. "It seems like I've fought forever as a super middleweight but I'm a middleweight and this fight is going to help me get a fight against a top middleweight. My mind is right for this fight and I know what I need to do. I'm not going to leave fights in the hands of the judges anymore. "I went the distance with some big dogs (David Lemieux, Marcos Antonio Rubio,Gilberto Ramirez Sanchez, Lamar Russ, Patrick Majewski, Tarvis Simms and Edwin Rodriguez). I didn't get knocked out or quit in those fights and my mind is set now. You're only as good as your camp and I'm having a great one, sparring with Jermain Taylor and some other good fighters for this fight." Frias hasn't been stopped in 28 fights, including losses to present International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior middleweight champion Carlos Molina (19-5-2),Mikael Zewski (19-0), Ionut Dan Ion (30-2), Vitaliy Demyanenko (21-0) and Freddy Hernandez (25-1). The highlight of the 38-year-old Frias' career remains a ninth-round TKO of Henry Crawford. "I injured my left hand in sparring for my last fight against Zewski," Frias explained. "It was the biggest fight of my career, fighting for the first time on an HBO undercard, so I didn't say anything and kept icing it. I felt I could stop him but I lost a decision and aggravated my hand injury. It hurt badly after that fight (June 15, 2013). I could have had surgery but we decided to rest it and have cortisone treatment. I hope to be back fighting in November, at least by the end of this year. My hand has held up in sparring and we'll have to wait and see if it holds up in a real fight. "I've had injuries with my hands. They're real small for a guy my size and chronically swollen. I already had surgery on my right hand. It's been real difficult and aggravating. My hands are wrapped good and I've blocked out the pain during fights once the blood gets flowing, but I was just throwing punches at a target instead of punching through 'em. I fought with damaged hands against Zewski, Ion, and Demyanenko but I'm optimistic now. I'm going for broke. This is my last run; I'm not a young buck anymore." Stern added, "Of all the fighters I've been around, nobody is tougher than Damian, who's never been afraid of fighting anybody. In most of the fights he's lost, Damian was strong in the early rounds, until his hand swelled and he couldn't use his left hand. His hand is stronger now after rest, medication and rehab. Undefeated Rey "El Maestro" Ojeda ( 11-0, 6 KO's ) captured the vacant lightweight WBA Fedecaribe title by defeating via TKO at 0:01 of the fourth, Fernando Torres ( 18-4-1, 10 KO's ).

The referee stops the fight due to a cut on Torres right eye by a punch but instant replay shows it was from a headbutt. Torres camp will protest the decision.

Co featuring the event, Miguel "el Gallo" Marrero ( 7-0-2, 4 KO ) and Christopher Rivera ( 5-12-1, 4 KO ) ended in a draw. Judges scorecards 58-56 Marrero, 58-56 Rivera and 57-57.

'Son of Drago' aims for Monte Carlo upset

 

Denis Grachev may be the underdog, but he’s training with the will of a champion ahead of his July 13 fight with Edwin Rodriguez for the Million Dollar Super Four crown in Monte Carlo, Monaco. 

The tournament is promoted by Golden Gloves. 

Grachev (13-1, 8 KOs) is holed up at Abel Sanchez’s Summit Gym in Big Bear, California, where the stable includes WBA and IBO middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, who fights in the US later this month. 

Grachev earned his place in the final against Rodriguez (23-0, 15 KOs) with a rugged 10-round split-decision defeat of undefeated two-time champion Zsolt Erdei in Monaco in March. 

The man who trades by the name “The Son of Drago” says that while he was only in camp for 10 days for the Erdei fight, this camp would total six weeks’ training, leaving him in “the best form ever”. 

“We are high in the mountains, eight of us fighters, just boxing and training. It is hard work, very intensive, with jogging in the morning and much training the rest of the day. I wasn’t in my best shape last time, but this will be different.” 

Grachev says the fight with Erdei was the hardest of his career. “With his boxing style and experience, it was my most difficult fight. It was hard to find the key to beating him. I think it will be easier with Rodriguez. He is the favourite according to many boxing fans, but they are going to be disappointed. It will probably be his first loss.” 

Sparring with Golovkin has added sharpness to the Russian’s repertoire, but he’s also trained with Zaurbek Baysangurov, the WBO junior-middleweight champion, and two other Russians. 

“I’ve had very good sparring, especially Gennady [whose last defence topped the Monte Carlo card]. We are studying Rodriguez’s style and sparring accordingly.” 

A former champion kickboxer and mixed martial artist who has fought all over the world, he especially enjoyed the Monte Carlo experience. “It’s a fantastic place and I learned good boxing lessons there. I found out some of my mistakes and I am now working on them. Winning Super Four would mean a lot; it would be a great honour being better than Erdei and Rodriguez.” 

The Monte Carlo card includes champion Khabib Allakhverdiev (18-0, 8 KOs) versus Souleymane M’baye (40-4-1, 22 KOs) for the WBA and IBO light-welterweight championship, the WBC Silver cruiserweight fight between title holder Dmytro Kucher (21-0, 15 KOs) and Junior Makabu (13-1, 13 KOs) and a European middleweight title fight between Maksym Bursak (26-1-1, 2 KOs) and Prince Arron (23-4-1, 5 KOs).

Douglas of Washington, D.C. has shot out to a perfect mark of 7-0 with five knockouts and this will already be his sixth fight of 2013.

Douglas has been stepping up the competition with each fight and has already appeared on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights two times in 2013.

“I am always ready to fight, no matter how experienced he is or what his record is.  I have the same mindset,” said Douglas.

“I have been working and sparring with southpaws.  I am faster and stronger.”

Douglas is not worried that King has 19 professional fights.

“I am faster, I have more skills and with my amateur background, I look at myself as being the more experienced fighter.”

King of West Palm Beach, Florida has a record of 11-8 with two knockouts and is by far the most experienced for the twenty year-old Douglas.

This will be the seventh undefeated fighter that King will have faced which includes top prospects Abraham Han, Edwin Rodriguez, J’Leon Love and Delen Parsley.  King is coming off a 3^rd round stoppage over Anthony McManaway on February 16^th.

In the twelve round main event, it will be a twelve round Bantamweight battle of undefeated fighters as Jundy Maraon (15-0-1) of the Philippines takes on Juan Carlos Payano (13-0, 7 KO’s) of the Dominican Republic.

Doors open at 6:00 pm and the action starts at 7:30.
