FROM THE CAGE TO THE RING, BOYINGTON AND CHARLES TO SHOW VERSATILITY IN PRO BOXING DEBUTS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Lewiston, Maine (September 26, 2014) –New England Fights (NEF), America's number-one regional fight promotion, will present its inaugural boxing event on October 11, 2014 at the historic Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston, Maine. It will be the first professional boxing event in Lewiston in more than ten years and the first in the building, famous for the Muhammad Ali-Sonny Liston World Heavyweight Title rematch of May 1965, in close to twenty years.

The fight card will feature a junior middleweight contest scheduled for four-rounds between debuting professional boxers Bruce "Pretty Boy" Boyington and Nate Charles.  Fans of NEF are, of course, very familiar with both athletes from their time in NEF Boxing's sister promotional brand New England Fights Mixed Martial Arts (NEF MMA).  They have been regulars in the NEF MMA cage since the promotion's inception, Boyington having competed on eight of NEF MMA's previous events and Charles having competed as an amateur on six of those events.  Both are known for their striking abilities, and each holds a memorable, highlight-reel knockout victory in the NEF MMA cage - Boyington over Keegan Hornstra in June 2012 and Charles over Rob Vanadestine in November 2012.

"This should be a real treat," exclaimed NEF co-owner and matchmaker Matt Peterson.  "Getting to watch both of these guys do what they do best and not have to worry about takedowns or submissions.  This fight has all the potential to steal the show at our inaugural boxing event."

Boyington, a Taekwondo specialist and veteran of the United States Marine Corps, is the reigning NEF MMA Lightweight Champion.  He won the vacant title earlier this month over Jesse "The Viking" Erickson via technical knockout.  Boyington and Erickson will meet in a rematch at NEF MMA's next event, "NEF XV," on November 15 in Lewiston, but Boyington's focus at the moment is on the boxing match with Charles.

"I'm very excited, as usual, to be a part of something historical in the combat sports industry and being on this boxing card for New England Fights is no different," stated Boyington.  "I worked a lot on my boxing over the years, and although my heart lies heavily in MMA, I'm very thrilled at the idea of someone not allowed takedowns and having to stand in front of me the whole time - that's a first for me and I promise people, you will be surprised at what comes next. Stay tuned. Thank you to Matt Peterson and Nick DiSalvo for giving me such an opportunity in life."

Charles is the owner and head coach of Balanced Ground MMA. Like his opponent, Charles is also a military veteran having served in the United States Navy.  Also like Boyington, Charles has expressed his excitement over being able to showcase his striking skills at NEF Boxing without having to worry about takedowns and grappling.

"First of all, thanks to NEF and Bruce Boyington for the great opportunity," said Charles when reached for comment.  "Turning pro was definitely not done from a place of arrogance ,but rather a better justification for spending so much time away from home. Finally no takedowns to worry about, just hands flying.  How exciting. I'm fortunate and proud to be part of this historic event. Not to mention boxing against the NEF MMA Lightweight Champ in his first boxing match. Two MMA strikers in a boxing match should make for a fan-friendly fight. I'll be ready. Come out and support NEF and your local Maine fighters October 11th."

NEF's next event "NEF BOXING" takes place on October 11, 2014 at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston, Maine.  The fight card will feature rising  star Brandon "The Cannon" Berry (7-0), as well as Stevie Gamache (4-0), the son of former World Champion Joey Gamache.  Tickets for "NEF BOXING" start at just $25 and are on sale now at www.TheColisee.com or by calling the Colisee box office at207.783.2009 x 525.  For more information on the event and fight card updates, please visit the promotion’s website at www.NewEnglandFights.com. In addition, you can watch NEF fight videos at www.youtube.com/NEFMMA, follow the promotion on Twitter @nefights and join the official Facebook group “New England Fights.”

NEF MMA ANNOUNCES MARCUS DAVIS VS RYAN SANDERS AT NEF XII

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Lewiston, Maine (December 9, 2013) – New England Fights Mixed Martial Arts (NEF MMA) today announced the addition of a professional welterweight contest to the fight promotion’s February 8, 2014 card. The event, entitled “NEF XII,” will take place at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston and will feature UFC-veteran and Maine MMA legend Marcus “The Irish Hand Grenade” Davis (22-10) against Young’s MMA standout “THE” Ryan Sanders (5-4).

“This is set to be the biggest battle in Maine mixed martial arts history between fighters from the two biggest schools in the state,” stated NEF co-owner and promoter Nick DiSalvo. “Since we started NEF MMA over two years ago, people have been calling for a Davis-Sanders clash-in-the-cage based on the history and bad blood between these two. Finally, on February 8th, we’re going to witness this highly anticipated fight. For followers of Maine mixed martial arts, there’s no bigger bout that we could make right now. This matchup is a nuclear bomb.”

Ryan Sanders began cross training and fighting in amateur MMA as a student at Marcus Davis’ famed Team Irish in Brewer, Maine back in 2006 and with a former training partner of Davis’, Chris Young, at Young’s MMA across town in Bangor. After almost five years of straddling schools, Sanders made the decision to permanently join Young’s MMA in 2011. Sanders’ choice caused a rift between the two biggest MMA gyms in Maine and the rancor between them has been building ever since.

The bad blood boiled over in September 2012 when Sanders contended for the Maine State MMA Welterweight Championship at “NEF VI” against Brazil’s Gil de Freitas. Davis cornered de Freitas against Sanders during the bout in which de Freitas won a unanimous decision on the judges' scorecards. After the decision was read, the two corners engaged in a heated exchange before being escorted out of the cage under the watchful supervision of state commission staff. Ever since the commotion at “NEF VI,” fans have been petitioning NEF for a Davis-Sanders showdown. With bout agreements in place, fans will finally see the teacher-student confrontation.

“Normally you take fights that you have no emotional connection and nothing at stake other than a win or a loss,” stated Davis when reached for comment. “In this case, it's a classical student versus former instructor. Also competing against our main competition in our area. I have the most at stake here. Sanders is supposed to lose. I'm a 22-year professional fight vet with 15 appearances in the UFC. I own my gym; he is just another student at Young's. This fight affects not only my pride, but my business. I can't just ‘get the win’ against Sanders. I have to knock him out or submit him quickly.”

“Fighting Marcus is this biggest opportunity of my fighting career and I will not let it slip through my hands,” stated Sanders when reached for comment. “You will see the best Ryan Sanders that anyone has ever seen come February 8th. It’s an honor to fight him and it’s my time.”

“Marcus Davis made the decision over two decades ago to devote his life to competing and teaching martial arts,” stated NEF co-owner and matchmaker Matt Peterson. “He is a fighter in every facet of his lifestyle and literally gave young, upcoming mixed martial artists their start—including Ryan Sanders himself. Marcus’ legacy is solidified and now we get to witness whether Ryan is the next breed of Maine fighter with the potential to make it big and go on to a long, storied career in combat sports. The energy around this one is searing.”

NEF MMA's next event, “NEF XII,” is scheduled to take place onSaturday, February 8, 2014 at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston, Maine with a bell time of 7:00 pm.  Maine State MMA Middleweight Champion Jesse Peterson (7-4) will return to action for the first time in nearly a year.  Tickets start at just $25 and are on sale now at www.TheColisee.com or by calling The Colisee box office at 207.783.2009 x 525. For more information on the event and fight card updates, please visit the promotion’s website at www.NewEnglandFights.com.  In addition, you can watch NEF MMA videos at www.youtube.com/NEFMMA, follow them on Twitter @nefights and join the official Facebook group “New England Fights.”

Undefeated CJ Ewer Looks for Fourth Straight Victory in Lewiston on November 9

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Lewiston, Maine (October 31, 2013) –New England Fights Mixed Martial Arts (NEF MMA) returns to the Androscoggin Bank Colisee on November 9, 2013 with the fight promotion's "NEF XI" event.  Among other contests, the fight card will feature a 165-pound catchweight amateur bout between CJ Ewer (3-0) and Wayne Ahlquist (2-5).

"It's such an overused cliché in the sport, but CJ Ewer is a 'beast' in every sense of the word," said NEF co-owner and matchmaker Matt Peterson.  "He's a powerhouse, and he's got a bright future ahead of him in the fight game.  And he's with the team that can take him to the top."

That team is Bangor, Maine's Young's MMA.  Under the guidance of head coach Chris Young, the Young's camp has produced NEF MMA professional stars such as "THE" Ryan Sanders (5-4), Damon "The Omen" Owens (2-0), Bruce "Pretty Boy" Boyington (3-6) and current Maine State Featherweight Champion Ray "All Business" Wood (4-0).

"I enjoy completing in the NEF," said Ewer, "and feel very fortunate to be able to have a gym like Young's MMA in my corner."

Having made his debut this past July in Bangor at "NEF VIII Nations Collide: Canadian Invasion," Ewer has been on a tear through the NEF MMA amateur ranks, racking up three victories with the promotion in a span of just two months.  The first victory, in Bangor, was a unanimous decision win over Steve Erland (1-2).  It was a close fight that saw both athletes trying to grind out a victory on the mat.

Just three weeks after his successful debut, Ewer returned to the cage at "NEF IX" to defeat Steven Fontaine (0-1) in Biddeford, Maine, this time via second round submission.  Not one to rest on his laurels, Ewer was back in the NEF MMA cage a few weeks later at "NEF X" where he chalked-up an impressive second-round technical knockout (TKO) victory over the always-tough Crowsneck Boutin (3-5).  On November 9 in Lewiston, Ewer will look to make Ahlquist his fourth victim in as many months.  Ahlquist is a veteran of the New England amateur ranks, fighting out of Lakes Region Vale Tudo in Laconia, New Hampshire.

"From the footage I watched, he seems to be a really tough kid who is not afraid to get in there and do battle," said Ewer of Ahlquist.

NEF MMA’s next event, “NEF XI,” is scheduled to take place onSaturday, November 9, 2013 at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston, Maine with a bell time of 7:00 pm.  Maine State MMA Bantamweight Champion Paul Gorman (9-8) is scheduled to defend his title that night against Tateki Matsuda (8-4).  John Ortolani (7-7) will meet Tony Christodoulou (9-4) for the vacant Maine State Lightweight Championship.  Tickets start at just $10 and are on sale now at www.TheColisee.com or by calling The Colisee box office at 207.783.2009 x 525. New England Fights MMA Events - the First Ten, the Next Ten and Beyond

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Lewiston, Maine (September 16, 2013) – This Saturdayafternoon and evening, September 21, New England Fights Mixed Martial Arts (NEF MMA) presents the fight promotion's tenth live event, "NEF X," at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston.  The fight card is currently scheduled to feature more than two dozen bouts.  The headline match will see the crowning of a new Maine State MMA Lightweight Champion when Bangor's Jon Lemke (3-1) meets John Ortolani (7-7) inside the cage.

"This is a landmark event for the 'little promotion that could,'" stated NEF MMA matchmaker and co-owner Matt Peterson.  "What started as two guys who love fight sports meeting two years ago and deciding to put on a single event has turned into one of the most successful regional promotions in the country."

Peterson, the Maine state representative for District 92, is referring to his joining forces with Massachusetts attorney Nick DiSalvo in the fall of 2011 to plan their first MMA event in Lewiston.  The duos' first event, which took place on February 11, 2012, drew more than 3,200 fans to the Androscoggin Bank Colisee, smashing the state's attendance record for an MMA event by some 1,400 tickets.  Since that time, the promotion has held eight more events, the majority of which took place in Lewiston, with another two in Biddeford and the promotion's debut in Bangor at Darling's Waterfront Pavilion this past July.  Over that period of time, more than 25,000 fight fans have flocked through the gates of NEF MMA events.

“It's humbling to think back to my first events in Massachusetts when I struggled to put 500 fans in a venue," said DiSalvo.  "I'm still in awe at what we've done in Maine.  The fans are just the best.  They really appreciate what the fighters do in the cage.  The same can be said of the press in Maine.  You have reporters who treat the fighters and the sport with the respect they deserve.  You don't get that everywhere for MMA.  It's something special here, as it should be.  We had affiliates of all the major television networks covering us almost around the clock for fight week in Bangor this summer.  I never even dreamed of mainstream media coverage like that for a regional promotion."

Over the course of the first ten events, NEF MMA brought fans: Former UFC World Heavyweight Champion Tim "The Maine-iac" Sylvia's (31-8) first fight ever in his home state; a Marcus "The Irish Hand Grenade" Davis (22-9) main event; the crowning of seven Maine State MMA champions; national coverage on AXS TV, Spike TV, and a four-part series on TUFF TV; two viral videos with several million views online; and a co-promotion with top-tier MMA promotion Bellator in Lewiston.

"It's a lot of work," said Peterson of putting the events together.  "Until you've actually done this, you can't really appreciate how many hours go into each show.  Nick and I work from dusk to dawn and then from dawn to dusk.  That's every day from the end of the previous show right up until the time the first fight goes off at the next event.  It's a labor of love.  It's all about making the best possible experience for the fans and fighters. Nick and I are fans first and promoters second.  We try our best to put on what we would want to see as fans.  We still keep our ticket prices extremely low and we give fans hours of entertainment each time they come out.  We believe strongly that you don't have to sacrifice quality for quantity and vice versa.  We believe the fans should be able to have their cake and eat it too."

What is next for NEF MMA beyond NEFX?

"Everything bigger and better," answered DiSalvo when the question was put to him.  "We improve a little more every show.  We're constantly adding to the production.  One thing we'd really like to lock down is a regular television deal. We did the mini-season on TUFF TV last year, but we're looking for something more long-term.  The wheels are turning, constantly turning, and many calls are being logged.  We're just waiting for the right fit."

And what about NEF MMA branching out into other states?

"That's always a consideration," said Peterson.  "When you put 3,000 people in an arena, you start to catch the eye of a lot of venues.  Sure, we get calls on it, but we need the right deal to make it work.  Whether we do shows in other states or not, Lewiston will always be our home, and the fans here can expect to see NEF MMA action on a regular basis no matter what the future brings."

NEF MMA's next event, “NEF X,” is scheduled to take place this Saturday, September 21, 2013 at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston, Maine.  Tickets start at just $25 and are on sale now at www.TheColisee.com.   The card will feature a 155-pound bout between Jon Lemke (3-1) and John Ortolani (7-7) to fill the recently vacated Maine State Lightweight Championship. In addition, UFC veteran Jimmy "Crash" Quinlan (3-1) will face Luc Bondole (2-0).  For more information on the event and the full fight card, please visit the promotion's website at www.NewEnglandFights.com.  In addition, you can watch NEF MMA videos at www.youtube.com/NEFMMA, follow them on Twitter @nefights and join the official Facebook group “New England Fights.”

Ray Wood Injured and Out of NEF X; Lemke-Ortolani Bumped Up to Main Event

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Lewiston, Maine (August 28, 2013) – New England Fights MMA (NEF MMA) tonight announced that Maine State Featherweight Champion Ray Wood (4-0) is injured and unable to defend his title on September 21 against Joe Pingitore (4-0-1).  The bout was the scheduled main event of the promotion's NEF X event at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston.

"It's disappointing, because it had all the promise of a great fight, but injuries are part of the game," said NEF MMA co-owner and promoter Nick DiSalvo when reached for comment.  "The Wood-Pingitore fight will happen in the future.  When exactly that will be depends on the extent of Ray's injury and a recovery timeframe.  NEF wishes Ray a speedy recovery, and we look forward to seeing him back in the cage soon."

NEF MMA executives would not comment on the specifics of Wood's injury. DiSalvo did, however, go on to say that the co-main event bout between Jon Lemke (3-1) and John Ortolani (7-7) for the vacant Maine State Lightweight Championship would be bumped to the main event slot.  In addition, a featured welterweight contest between Jarod Lawton (3-1) and Leon Davis (4-2) would be moved into the co-main event position.

“NEF X” is scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 21, 2013 at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston, Maine.  Tickets start at just $25 and are on sale now at www.TheColisee.com.   The card will feature a 155-pound bout between Jon Lemke (3-1) and John Ortolani (7-7) to fill the recently vacated Maine State Lightweight Championship. NEF MMA Announces Full Fight Card for September 21's NEF X Event

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Lewiston, Maine (August 22, 2013) - New England Fights Mixed Martial Arts (NEF MMA) today announced the full fight card for the fight promotion's September 21 event.  Entitled "NEF X," the event will mark NEF MMA's return to the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston and the third and final event of the mixed martial arts promotions “Summer Vacationland Fight Tour.”

"It feels good to be going back home," said NEF MMA promoter and co-owner Nick DiSalvo.  "We took the show on the road with events in Bangor and Biddeford and now we're back in Lewiston.  I personally can't wait to get back in the Colisee to present our biggest and best card to date."

NEF MMA went out of its way in putting the fight card together for its fans. Known for marathon-length shows, and wanting to do something special for its tenth-anniversary event, the fight promotion made 35 fights for the card, including 14 professional bouts.

"Like we do with every card, we wanted to really give the fans as much action as we could for their dollar," stated NEF matchmaker and co-owner Matt Peterson. "In this economy, people work hard for their money and we want to give them as much great entertainment as possible with tickets marked low.  From top to bottom, this is the most well-matched card we've put on to date.  Any fan of MMA in Maine, or anywhere in New England for that matter, won't want to miss this show."

The top of the card is headlined by two title fights. The first fight features Bucksport's Ray “All Business” Wood (4-0) defending his Maine State MMA Featherweight Title against fellow undefeated 145-pound competitor Joe Pingitore (4-0-1) of Rhode Island.  In the second title fight, to fill the vacant Maine State MMA Lightweight Championship, Jon Lemke (3-1), based out of Marcus Davis's Team Irish, will meet Massachusetts native and professional lacrosse player John Ortolani (7-7).

In other feature bouts on the pro-side of the card: UFC veteran and recent contestant on The Ultimate Fighter, Jimmy Quinlan (3-1), will see action against the ever-popular Luc Bondole (2-0) in a Middleweight contest; Jarod "Last Minute" Lawton (3-1) of Augusta brings his full arsenal of submissions to the cage when he takes on Leon Davis (4-2) in the Welterweight division; and featherweights Damon Owens (1-0) and Josh Parker (4-6) will square off.
