Willie Nelson express back on track After elbow surgery derailment To headline this week's ESPN FNF

LOUIS (August 4, 2014) -- World super welterweight contender Willie "The Great" Nelson (22-1-1, 13 KOs), rated No. 5 in the world by the World Boxing Council (WBC), is back on track after surgery to his left elbow temporarily derailed his very promising career. Nelson takes on former Mexican champion Luis "Slayer" Grajeda (17-2-2, 13 KOs) in the 10-round main event on this week's ESPN Friday Night Fights, airing live from Churchill County Fairgrounds in Fallon, Nevada. "My elbow is fine, 100-percent, and I don't even think about it when I'm fighting," Nelson said. "It's been frustrating but I'm a fighter and I'm looking forward. I'm focused on winning this fight, not on who I might be fighting next. I can't get my big fight without making a big splash this Friday night. Grajeda is in top shape, always comes to fight, and nobody's ever stopped him." Nelson is riding an impressive six-fight win streak into this Friday night's fight. He had moved up to No. 3 in the WBC and signed to fight three-time world title challenger Matthew Macklin last December on HBO, however, the aforementioned elbow surgery forced him to pull out of that fight. Nelson was on a real roll, too, ranked as high as No. 3 in the WBC with all signs pointing towards his first world title fight in 2014.   Following his upset win over one Olympian, 2004 Cuban silver medalist Yudel Jhonson (currently WBC #18) by 10-round decision (97-92, 97-92, 95-94), Nelson defeated former U.S. Virgin Island Olympian, previously unbeaten (13-0) John Jackson (currently WBC #6), by way of a 10-round unanimous decision (98-92, 96-94, 96-94) for the vacant North American Boxing Federation (NABF) title. Then, on ESPN Friday Night Fights, Nelson registered a sensational first-round knockout of Michael Medina (26-3-2), whose ankle was fractured from the force of the blow. This scintillating performance earned Nelson his first shot on HBO, in which Nelson took a 10-round decision (97-93, 97-93, 96-94) from underrated Luciano Leonel Cuello (32-2), who is currently No. 13 by the WBC. Nelson returned to the ring this past June 7 at Madison Square Garden on the off-TV undercard of the Miquel Cotto--Sergio Martinez pay-per-view event. The freakishly built super welterweight from Cleveland took out all his bent-up frustrations out on veteran Darryl Cunningham (29-6), who was decked twice in the opening round before referee Eddie Claudio mercifully halted the action only 2:43 into the action. Now, Nelson continues his quest for a world title and/or career-defining fight, showcasing his vast skills this Friday on ESPN FNF against Grajeda. Grajeda is far from being a soft touch, though, despite American boxing fans not really knowing anything about him. To the contrary, he's never been stopped in 21 pro fights, defeated Hector Camacho, Jr., among the more notable, and went the full eight-round distance in a competitive loss by decision to WBC #3 Jermell Charlo. "This kid (Grajeda) can fight," Nelson's head trainer Jack Loew added. "He's 17-3 and a big, strong, hungry kid who at 6' 1" can punch. He has everything to gain fighting the No. 5 super welterweight in the WBC. If he can pull off an upset, he's right in the picture. "Any setback at this stage is frustrating. My guy deserves a big fight but that's what an injury like Willie had can do. It's not fair but sometimes it's that way in boxing. My job is to make Willie believe in me and that he'll get there. In the 10-round ESPN Friday Night Fights co-feature, North American Boxing Federation (NABF) super welterweight champion Willie "The Great" Nelson (19-1-1, 11 KOs) makes his first title defense against Michael "El Magnifico" Medina (26-3-2, 19 KOs). The Nelson-Medina fight is being promoted in association with Rumble Time Promotions. Australia-native Dib, who is promoted by hip-hop superstar 50 Cent, was originally supposed to fight Luis Franco who unexpectedly withdrew from the title fight. Gradovich immediately accepted the challenge without any reservations. "I train most of the time and I'm always in shape," Gradovich said. "To fight for a world title in only my 16th pro fight is quick, but I have good experience and this is a great opportunity for me." Gradovich was discovered by rising Russian manager Egis Klimas, who first heard about his latest star from his most well known boxer, world light heavyweight title contender Sergei Kovalev. "Evgeny had more than 150 amateur fights and he was a member of the Russian National Team," Klimas explained. "I went with Don Turner to scout him at the 2009 Russian National Championships. Evgeny lost but Don said that he was really good and to sign him if I could. All of my Russian fighters are trained in North Carolina by Don (19 world champions) when they first come to America. "I didn't build up his record. I had him fight opponents with equal records. If Evgeny was 5-0, he fought a guy with a similar record and so forth as he developed. Gradovich is a punching machine. He's going to pressure his opponent and throw a lot of punches, especially in good combinations. Being a late replacement won't be a problem. He'll have five weeks of training in Oxnard (CA) with Robert Garcia for this fight and he never blows up in weight between fights like other guys. We're not going to Foxwoods to meet 50 Cent; we're coming to take Dib's world title belt back with us." Called the Mexican-Russian by other fighters in his gym because of their respect for tough style of fighting, Gradovich is living the American dream: promoted by Top Rank, managed by trusted fellow countryman Klimas, trained by Garcia, and fighting for the world title in only his 16th pro fight. The angelic-looking Kielczweski has a crowd-pleasing style and proudly wears his red-and-white Polish colors in the ring for his growing legion of fans. The flashy 23-year-old junior lightweight has boxed since the age of six. He accumulated an amateur record of 118-26, highlighted by his runner-up finish in the 2008 National Golden Gloves Tournament. A 2007 National PAL Tournament amateur champion, "KO King" also won a silver medal at the Ringside World Championships and was a member of the 2009-2010 US Boxing Team. The compact, well-rounded super bantamweight is a consummate boxer. Another popular New Englander on the March 1 card in a female six-round match is New London's (Conn.) unbeaten Shelly "Shelito's Way" Vincent (7-0), who is trained by Peter Manfredo Sr. in Rhode Island. The popular junior featherweight is coming off of her best performance, a win by six-round decision over Nydia Feliciano in January. Another impressive win for Nelson, who is the top-ranked American in the World Boxing Council (WBC) ratings at No. 5, should move him up the ladder and closer to a world title shot. "This fight is very important for my career because I'll be showcasing my talent on ESPN and so many people will see me fight," Nelson said.  "This fight is going to get me closer to the top of my division in the WBC.  Personally, though, it's just another fight that won't affect me in the ring. "Medina comes straight forward and throws a lot of punches, but he has poor defense, throws looping punches, and doesn't move his head.  He likes to throw a lot of body punches.  I've fought a lot of guys like him in the amateurs and a few as a pro." WBC No. 17-ranked Medina will be giving away three-and-a-half inches in height, as well as a nine-inch reach advantage, to the 6'4" Nelson, who has an 84" reach.  Medina, whose most notable win to date is a 10-round decision in 2011 over Grady Brewer, has been stopped only once, by Saul Roman, and his only other losses as a professional have been to the undefeated Vanes Martirosyan and John Duddy.
