Dierry Jean eyes Terence Crawford At lightweight or junior welterweight

PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release   MONTREAL (July 9, 2014) - North American Boxing Federation (NABF) lightweight champion Dierry "Dougy Style" Jean (26-1, 18 KOs) has zeroed in on undefeated World Boxing Association lightweight champion Terence "Bud" Crawford (24-0, 17 KOs) as a potential opponent for a career-defining fight. Last month, Jean stopped Mario Perez (15-5-4) in the eighth round for the vacant NABF title, five months after Jean lost a unanimous 12-round decision (118-111, 116-112, 116-113) to International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior welterweight champion Lamont Peterson. Nearly two weeks ago, Jean watched with great interest as Crawford eventually destroyed previously undefeated Yuriorkis Gamboa (23-1, 16 KOs) on HBO. Crawford fought in his hometown of Omaha, Nebraska, packing the venue with more than 11,000 enthusiastic fans, who loudly cheered as Crawford dropped Gamboa four times en route to a ninth-round stoppage. Immediately after the fight there was talk that Crawford may be moving up one division to fight as a junior welterweight. "I thought it was a very good fight," Jean said. "Both fighters got caught. Gamboa was just too small to fight Crawford. Crawford would be a good fight for me, one that I can win. I think it would be a very technical fight. It wouldn't matter if we fought at 135 (lightweight) or 140 (junior welterweight). Of course, I'd prefer to fight him at home in Montreal, but for the right deal I'd go there to fight him in Omaha. I fought Pederson in his hometown, Washington D.C." Jean's promoter, Camille Estephan (Eye of the Tiger Management), believes the time is right for another major fight for Jean and Crawford is the perfect opponent. "Crawford is a very good champion and he proved that beating Gamboa like he did," Estephan commented. "He's also the HBO darling right now but, remember, he fought a guy much smaller than him, and that was the big difference. Crawford is a perfect fight for Dierry, who can fight him at 135 or 140, whatever weight he picks. We're open to fighting him here (Montreal), or we're willing to go into his backyard in Omaha, if that's what it takes."     "'Dougy' is ready and able to fight the best at 135 or 140," Jean's head trainer Mike Moffa added. Brown University Names Todd Beckerman Head Wrestling Coach

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Todd Beckerman, former Nebraska All-American, has been named the head wrestling coach at Brown University in an announcement made by Brown Director of Athletics Jack Hayes on Friday. Beckerman will head the Bears' coaching staff following eight successful seasons at the University of Maryland, where he served as the head assistant coach and recruiting coordinator.

"We're excited to have Todd Beckerman lead our wrestling program," said Hayes. "Todd was an outstanding student-athlete and he has continued that success as an accomplished coach with proven credentials. He brings tremendous experience and leadership to the position as well as a clear commitment to the direction of the program."

"I'm honored and excited to become the head coach at Brown, one of the most prestigious universities in the country," said Beckerman. "I would like to thank Jack Hayes and the rest of the search committee for giving me this opportunity. I look forward to working with the student-athletes, administration, and alumni to honor Brown's legacy while building a successful, nationally recognized program."

Beckerman, who has 12 years of coaching experience at the collegiate level, comes to Brown following an impressive stint at Maryland, where he helped lead the Terrapins to four ACC Championships in the last eight years, including back-to-back titles in 2011 and 2012.

Individually, Maryland has produced 16 different and 26 total conference champions during Beckerman's tenure, while six ACC champions directly trained with the two-time All-American. Under Beckerman's tutelage, seven wrestlers have earned All-American honors, including a trio of multiple winners. Beckerman also coached Steven Bell to a sixth-place finish at the 2009 NCAA Championships and an eighth-place finish at the 2010 NCAA Championships. Since 2006, 38 Maryland wrestlers were named to the All-ACC team, while two earned ACC Wrestler of the Year honors.

In addition to assisting with recruiting, coaching, travel, budgeting, academic support and several other administrative and development duties, Beckerman spearheaded a social media campaign that launched the Maryland program into the national spotlight. For his social media efforts, Beckerman and Maryland won the "The Gold Standard" award by the National Wrestling Coaches Association Best of Brand Awards in 2012.

Prior to his arrival at Maryland, Beckerman spent two seasons as an assistant coach at the Naval Academy. In 2004, Navy posted its best record since 1993 and had a school-record eight wrestlers record 25-win seasons.
In addition to stints at Maryland and Navy, Beckerman served as a volunteer coach at Nebraska during the 2002-03 season, where he primarily coached the lower weight classes and assisted with recruiting. He began his career as an administrative assistant at Penn State in 2001-02, where he worked one-on-one with student-athletes and directed summer camps.

A four-year letterwinner and two-time All-American at Nebraska, Beckerman graduated in 2001 with a B.S. in human resources and family sciences. In addition, he also earned a Master's in Education from Nebraska with an emphasis in post-secondary athletics in 2007.

As a student-athlete, Beckman put together a decorated career on the mat and racked up a lofty list of accolades while wrestling for the Huskers. He earned All-American status at the 2000 and 2001 NCAA Championships and also earned Academic All-Big 12 honors in both seasons. As a senior, the team captain was named the 2000-01 Nebraska Male Athlete of the Year and the Husker Power lifter of the Year, and also competed internationally in 1999 and 2000 with the Big 12 All-Star Wrestling Team.

Beckerman and his wife, Christina, have one daughter, Grace.

Beat The Street's Bill Crum to Guide MSG's Grapple at the Garden, he Talks to Takedown Radio

December 16th 2012 college wrestling will invade Madison Square Garden for the first time in its illustrious 133 year history.  “Grapple at the Garden,” will include a robust field of fourteen top wrestling teams from around the country. Scheduled to compete: Bloomsburg,  Bucknell,  Chattanooga,  Cornell,  Drexel,  Hofstra,  George Mason, Iowa, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma State, Ohio State, and Rutgers. This event will consist of dual meets at 10:30am and 12:30pm.

 

The event, designed to promote the sport will benefit wrestling at all levels. New York's Beat the Streets program will be the primary recipient of proceeds.  Many people will be a part of this presentation including Beat the Streets senior consultant Bill Crum.  An original board member of USA Wrestling, Crum has been involved in the sport for over 40 years serving as Assistant Executive Director of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Hudson County and Executive Director of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Essex County.

 

Crum successfully organized 225 individuals to form the Competition Management Staff for the 2003 World Championships of Freestyle Wrestling in Madison Square Garden. Bill served as a consultant to "NYC2012," the group formed to bring the Olympic Games to the New York Area in the year 2012.  Bill has served as the Event Director for many Local, State, National and International Events, including the U.S. Open Grand Prix. He served as Assistant Competition Manager for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta and Competition Manager for the 2003 World Championships.

Bill was named national "State Chairman of the Year" in 1984 and "Junior World Division Leader of the Year" in 1994.
