Martin Stops Goecmen In The Fifth To Lift WBU TitleMartin Stops Goecmen In The Fifth To Lift WBU Title

On Friday, 14th December at the Gary Hincks Malta Knights Promotions ‘Christmas Crackers’ event, at the Sky Club in Paceville, Malta, localyoung gun Steve Martin sensationally beat Germany’s Sabri Ulas Goecmen to
become the new WBU Light Welterweight International Champion.

Prior to Martin’s bout, reigning WBU Super Middleweight Champion of the World ‘Super’ Scott Dixon gave late replacement, Dominik Ameri, serious problems in their eight round non-championship bout.

Throughout the early rounds Dixon showcased his superior boxing skills, easily picking off the twenty year old German with strong jabs and body, head combinations.

In the third round Dixon stepped up the pace a little, letting rip with heavy handed salvo after salvo, leaving the young German no option but to cover up and rely on the occasional countering jab in an attempt to keep the charging bull like Dixon at bay.

Ameri’s defense was no match for Dixon, who fired a massive hook low and hard to the body, to send the hapless German to the canvas.

The crowd thought it was all over, but Ameri showed he’s from much tougher stock and made it to his feet before referee John Gauchi finished the count.

For the remaining rounds Dixon reverted to his earlier game plan, plain out boxing the German to secure a shutout points victory of 80-71 on all three judges scorecards.

The atmosphere at the Sky Club was electric as the protagonists, for the headlining WBU International Championship bout, prepared to make their way to the ring.

Entering first Sabri Ulas Goecmen ran the gauntlet of jeers from the heavily partisan crowd, it was deafening, but the decibel reading went right off the scale as local hero Steve Martin entered the arena.

Martin started hard and fast, reminiscent of his mentor Scott Dixon’s approach in the earlier bout, the twenty five year old oozed confidence as he picked off his far more experienced opponent with solid jabs and heavy rights.

By the end of the fourth round Goecmen, who had struggled to make the weight the day before, was looking drained, what could you expect really, young Martin had kept the pressure up for every single second of every
round so far, so it came as no surprise that following yet another massive onslaught, in the fifth, that the German’s corner threw in the towel to save their man getting knocked out, which was a real possibility at this
point.

As the towel fluttered down to centre ring the entire crowd jumped to their feet cheering their young hero, at the very same time Martin’s jubilant team leapt through the ropes to celebrate with their young charge.

The official scorecards showed that Martin had won every round, all the judges scorecards read 40-36 in favour of the Maltese youngster, prior to Goecmen’s corner retiring their man.

Supporting the two professional bouts was a special four bout Ireland vs. Malta exhibition tournament, organised by a local semi-pro organisation.

Gary Hincks’ organisation should be congratulated for putting together such an excellent night of boxing, as should the relatively young Malta Boxing Commission, who were sanctioning and officiating a Championship
event for the first time, for their professionalism, but the real kudos has to go to the new WBU Light Welterweight International Champion Steve Martin for his magnificent victory.

Malta Calling: Barry Smith To Prepare Steve Martin For Title Shot

TRAD TKO coach Barry Smith has left the cold of London behind, for the much warmer and sunnier climes of Malta, where he will undertake the final preparations of Steve Martin, ahead of the twenty five year old from Pieta’s first tilt at Championship honours this coming Friday.

Barry, whose fiancée is Maltese, regularly trains local boxers when he visits the Islands, for extended periods of time throughout the year.

Back in August Barry helped prepare former Commonwealth Champion ‘Super’ Scott Dixon for his successful WBU World Super Middleweight title fight against Baker Barakat, as well as Steve Martin for his excellent third
round stoppage victory over Patryk Wolke.

Before setting off to Malta, Barry spoke briefly about his thoughts on Steve Martin and Scott Dixon’s upcoming bouts.

“Yeah, I had a phone call from Scotty (Dixon) about me going over to Malta to help him and Steve (Martin) out.

As we know they train themselves out there, and they don’t have any professional corner men or cuts men out there, so I’m happy to go out there and help them out.

They’re happy with it and I’m happy with it, especially Steve Martin, he’s very committed to the game and I love that in him.

He’s a hundred and ten percent up for this, he’s paying for me to fly me out there out of his own pocket.

I have to tell you, I think he’s gonna win, he’s got balls the size of your head he has.

I’ll tell you something else, for someone that coaches themself, he’s so fit, he’s really fit and very dedicated.

Now he’s got this title shot, he must be buzzing off it, obviously that’s why he’s called me up, so he can have someone professional in the corner with him.

Scotty’ll be fighting as well, not a title fight this time, just an eight rounder, and I’ll be helping him as well.

I’ve known Scotty since he was a little boy, he’s one of them ones, he’s got better with age I think.

I was out there in August with him, I trained him for that fight, for that World title fight, and I’ll tell you something now, I’ve never seen Scotty Dixon in such good shape as he was.

He was in fantastic shape, it’s like he’s gone to another level now. He’s knuckled down, he’s had his problems as we all know, but while I was out there with him he was like a different person, he wanted it out there, and he wanted me there.

They offered me to stay there for the World title fight but unfortunately I couldn’t, because my flight was the day before, but I trained him for it.

On Friday I think both Scotty and Steve will win, and I’m looking forward to celebrating with them afterwards.”

Steve Martin versus Sabri Ulas Goecmen for the WBU Light Welterweight International title, and supported by an eight round contest between WBU Super Middleweight Champion of the World ‘Super’ Scott Dixon versus Mustafa Dogan headline the Malta Knights promoted ‘Christmas Crackers’ event at the Sky Club, Paceville, Malta on Friday 14th December 2012.

Tickets priced €25 available from the Meet Argentinian Steakhouse, St. Julians, Malta or call Steve Martin on 99636966

Important Statement From The President Of The Malta Boxing Commission

Malta Boxing Commission

For Immediate Release.

Gzira, Malta - Tuesday, 22nd May 2012

Whilst the world wide media have been focused on the issues surrounding
the proposed Dereck Chisora versus David Haye in London on July 14th,
elsewhere in the World a not too dissimilar scenario has been unfolding on
the Islands of Malta.

Unlike in the case of Dereck Chisora or David Haye, where no criminal
charges have been instigated, former Commonwealth Champion Scott Dixon,
the subject of the drama unfolding in Malta, has been on bail since 2009
awaiting trial for the alleged importation and distribution of narcotics.

On receiving news that Mr. Dixon has been arrested for breaking his bail
conditions, Alexander Zammit, President of the Malta Boxing Commission,
today issued the following statement:

“The incorrigible former commonwealth boxing champ, Scott Dixon, is back
behind bars. Information supplied to the office of the Malta Boxing
Commission indicates that Dixon was arrested for breaking his bail
conditions.

Unconfirmed sources also informed us that Dixon's bail bond was withdrawn
before he was re-arrested.

Dixon is presently in Malta (where he has resided since 2005) awaiting
trial in connection over the alleged importation and attempted
distribution of around 500 Kilos of cannabis or resin cannabis, since
2009. He was eventually given provisional liberty against a bail bond of
over 30,000 Euros.

Hours before Dixon was arrested early on Saturday morning (19 May, 2012),
he was acting as a corner-man for the organisers of Malta's 'Prize Boxer',
an eight-men unsanctioned boxing tournament based on the 'Prize Fighter'
concept.

Sources at ringside place Dixon at the tournament into the early hours of
Saturday morning (from Friday night), well beyond the parameters
established in his bail conditions by the local courts.

This latest episode in the Dixon saga may have put paid to Dixon's
comeback plans. According to the German based 'World Boxing Union' Scott
Dixon was to take on Baker Barakat (champion) for his WBU
super-middleweight title on the 18th August in Pembroke, Malta.

Sources from within the WBU confirm that this bout is being sanctioned by
the German Boxing Board (BDB).

On the other hand - The BDB are presently condemning very strongly and
labeling as controversial a contest between David Haye and Dereck Chisora
at West Ham on July 14, sanctioned by the Luxembourg Boxing Federation
(LBF).

Just as Chisora and Haye do not hold a valid license with the BBBofC or
the BDB - neither does Scott Dixon hold a boxing license with the Malta
Boxing Commission (MBC). As a matter of fact he was refused a license by
the MBC until such time as the Maltese authorities either declared him
innocent of the charges against him or such charges are dropped.

Yet the BDB (according to the WBU) saw fit to sanction this Malta show and
one has to assume that if this show were to happen this would also be done
under a German Boxing License as Dixon's license was suspended by the
BBBofC before he took up residence in Malta.

Is this a case of two weights and two measures? - The BDB should never
have sanctioned an event involving Scott Dixon, especially since this is
being held in Malta.

In my opinion the proposed Barakat - Dixon fight is much more condemnable
than the Haye - Chisora fight.

If the Luxembourg Boxing Federation is to be condemned for supplying the
legality for the Haye - Chisora proposed fight, the Germans should also,
at the very least, be equally condemned over the Barakat - Dixon scheduled
fight.
