UFC 175: The Start of a New Era, Again?

By Chris Huntemann, Columnist

Remember “The Machida Era?”

Think back to UFC 98 when Lyoto Machida’s punches to Rashad Evans’ face crumpled him to the mat and landed “The Dragon” the light heavyweight title. No sooner did Evans hit the mat that we heard Joe Rogan proclaim “Welcome to the Machida Era.”

Well, it didn’t last very long. A controversial title defense against Mauricio “Shogun” Rua followed by a rematch and first-round knockout loss to Shogun ended “The Machida Era” before it really began. Machida had a chance to bring his era back to life against current Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones at UFC 140. But this time it was Machida’s turn to crumple to the mat, courtesy of a guillotine choke.

Since then, Machida moved to middleweight and hopes the third time is the charm as he takes on Chris Weidman for the middleweight title Saturday at UFC 175 in Las Vegas. Will “The Dragon” roar once again? Or, will Weidman prove his two victories against the seemingly unstoppable Anderson Silva were not a fluke?

I’ll get to the main event fight in a moment.

First, let’s take a look at the other fights on this Saturday’s main card:

Marcus Brimage vs. Russell Doane (Bantamweight – 135 lbs.)

Brimage is a veteran of season 14 of The Ultimate Fighter (Team Michael Bisping vs. Team Jason “Mayhem” Miller, for those who don’t remember), where he showed great promise and power in his hands. That led to a three-fight win streak for Brimage before he helped launch the career of featherweight Conor McGregor by losing to him in April of last year.

Doane’s lone UFC fight resulted in a triangle choke victory against Leandro Thomas Issa at the UFC Fight Night: Lim vs. Saffiedine card in January. His record is rife with submission victories, and I like him to do the same here in an upset against a TUF veteran.

Prediction: Doane by submission

Uriah Hall vs. Thiago Santos (Middleweight – 185 lbs.)

Everyone knows who Uriah Hall is. He was pegged for stardom on season 18 of The Ultimate Fighter, when he viciously knocked out every single one of his opponents, and Chael Sonnen himself said he could have been a number one contender for the middleweight title right on the heels of the show.

Given Chael’s current situation, we’re not sure how much stock to put in his words. It also didn’t help that Hall seemed so timid in losing the final of TUF to Kelvin Gastelum and then lost again to John Howard. He rebounded somewhat by sending Chris Leben into retirement last year.

Santos secured a TKO victory against Rony Markes – who’s no joke himself – in his last fight. But I think Hall continues his climb up the middleweight ladder with a TKO victory of his own.

Prediction: Hall by TKO

Stefan Struve vs. Matt Mitrione (Heavyweight)

Matt Mitrione is a curious case. He came across as a weirdo on The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights, but he proved his doubters wrong when he embarked on a five-fight win streak following his time on the show. Then he suffered a two-fight losing streak before alternating wins and losses in his next three fights.

Struve is fighting for the first time since having his jaw rearranged by Mark Hunt. More importantly, it's his first time competing in the cage since the discovery that he suffers from a serious heart ailment. I watched Struve fight in person when he submitted Pat Barry on the UFC Live 6: Cruz vs. Johnson card in 2011. Mitrione has serious power, and Struve has been knocked out before. But I like Struve to be methodical in his approach and use his reach advantage to set up strikes while avoiding Mitrione’s loaded fists.

Prediction: Struve by unanimous decision

Ronda Rousey vs. Alexis Davis (Women’s Bantamweight Title – 135 lbs.)

I’ve said this before, but I don’t think Ronda Rousey will ever lose. To anyone. However, I said the same thing about Anderson Silva, and we saw what happened. But unlike the men’s middleweight division, I don’t believe the depth of talent is there yet in women’s MMA, even though it has been an exciting addition to the UFC. Ronda is clearly the best female fighter in the sport, and I don’t think any other woman even comes close to matching her incredible talent.

Ronda showed vastly improved striking in her latest bouts, and she ended her last fight thanks to a vicious knee to Sara McMann’s liver. Still, I like her to go back to Ol’ Reliable to successfully defend her title yet again. Once she gets a grasp on an opponent's arm, there's no escape.

Prediction: Rousey by submission

Chris Weidman vs. Lyoto Machida (Middleweight Title – 185 lbs.)

There are those who claim Weidman’s victory against Anderson Silva and subsequent title defense were flukes – a product of Silva’s arrogance in the first fight and a freak broken leg in the second. I’m not sure I agree with that assertion for the first fight. Yes, Silva was trying to clown Weidman. Yes, Silva dropped his hands, which is a cardinal sin in MMA. But Silva tried clowning other fighters and dropped his hands against other fighters before.

The difference? Weidman didn’t take the bait. He stepped up his aggression, which is what the best fighters do. Machida won’t clown Weidman like Silva tried to do, but he will do his patented stick-and-move and basically play keep away from Weidman the entire fight. It’s up to Weidman to close the distance with Machida and give him no breathing room.

I think Weidman will do just that. Machida will avoid being finished, but he won’t avoid being ground into the mat by the master wrestler and ground-and-pound specialist Weidman. It looks like we’ll have to wait a little longer to see the rebirth of “The Machida Era.”

Prediction: Weidman by unanimous decision

Eight Heavyweights Invade Horseshoe Casino Hammond at Bellator 75 on October 5

Season 7 Heavyweight Tournament kicks off from The Horseshoe Friday October 5
Newport Beach, Cali. (August 3, 2012) — After hosting one of the most memorable night of fights in Bellator history, the promotion is heading back to The Venue at Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Indiana on Friday, October 5. The night will feature the quarterfinals of the Season 7 Heavyweight Tournament, as well as a host of local talent. Tickets for this event go on sale at 10 a.m. CT on Friday, August 3 and are available at Horseshoe Casino, Ticketmaster, www.thevenue-chicago.com, or by calling 1-800-745-3000.

The event will broadcast starting at 7 p.m. CT on MTV2 and in commercial-free HD on EPIX. Doors open at 5:00 p.m. CT, with the preliminary streamed LIVE and FREE around the world on Spike.com starting at 5:30 p.m. CT.
“From the sold out crowd to the incredible fights, our first visit to Horseshoe Casino in Hammond was something I will never forget, so getting back to The Venue was something I wanted to get done immediately,” said Bellator Chairman & CEO Bjorn Rebney. “Our heavyweights always bring a great show with huge power and big KO’s, so our fans in the Chicago area should be in for a great night of fights October 5.”

The night will be headlined by a long awaited rematch nearly a year in the making as Eric Prindle will finally meet former Bellator Heavyweight Tournament Finalist Thiago “Big Monster” Santos in opening round action. The two giants were scheduled to fight at Bellator 62, but weigh issues forced Santos out of the fight. With those problems in the past, Santos and Prindle are both ready for a slugfest at Bellator 75 on October 5.

After making a strong statement in his Bellator debut, Brett “Da Grim” Rogers is set for his first taste of tournament action when he takes on Bellator newcomer and top Russian heavyweight Ruslan Magomedov. While both fighters are armed with heavy hands, Rogers is ready for the challenge he will soon face.

“I love to fight, and after the win against Kevin [Aslpund], it gave me even more motivation to keep training hard and getting in there and do exactly what I know I can do, and give the fans a show,” said Rogers. I want all the fans to know Brett Rogers is back. I’m training the hardest I ever have at ATT in Coconut Creek, and just getting ready to show everyone what I can do.”

The preliminary fight card will be highlighted by Chicago’s own Chase Beebe, who returns to the Bellator cage after a close split decision loss over a year ago to now Bantamweight Tournament Finalist Marcos Galvao. Armed with a slick arsenal of submission skills that have earned Beebe 16 submission victories in his young career, the Chicago native is looking to put on show in front of friends and family at Bellator 75.

Laredo favorite Sonny Luque is back after being away from the cage for over a year. He’ll meet Brownsville native Luis Vega, who enters the fight with an impressive 7-2 record and brings a six fight win streak into the cage.

The always inspirational Rad Martinez is back with Bellator and will be in a featherweight battle with Amarillo native Douglas Frey. A dedicated family man, many MMA observers are familiar with Martinez after his incredible journey was documented on ESPN’s “Outside the Lines.” Click here to see more on Rad’s incredible story.

Cosmo “Good Boy” Alexander looks to continue his ascent up the MMA ranks with a victory in Laredo. Alexander is known for his world class kickboxing, and will put his skills on display against El Paso native Oscar de la Parra in a lightweight affair.

Welterweights collide as Joseph Daily is set to battle Dallas native Sean “Black Magik” Spencer. Both 170 pounders have been climbing up the welterweight rankings, and will be looking to keep their momentum intact.
McKinney native Steven Peterson is ready for action as he steps into the Bellator cage against Dallas resident Chris Jones. Both impressive featherweights hold identical 6-1 records.

Two familiar faces return as lightweights Jacob Kirwan and Dave Jansen do battle. Kirwin is coming off an impressive victory at Bellator 54, while Jansen is 2-0 in his Bellator career, including a dominating submission victory at Bellator 57 over Ashkan Morvari.

Prindle vs. Santos $100,000 Heavyweight Tournament Championship Added to Bellator 62 in Laredo

Highly-anticipated Heavyweight Tournament Championship added to already stacked card

CHICAGO, Ill. (March 19, 2012) — Everything is bigger in Texas – including the fight cards. Bellator Fighting Championships returns to The Lone Star State on Friday, March 23rd with a completely stacked night of fights at Bellator 62 live from the Laredo Energy Arena in Laredo, Texas. The night will feature the long-awaited rematch between “The American Soldier” Eric Prindle (@EricPrindleMMA) and Thiago “Big Monster” Santos (@BigMonsterMMA) to determine a winner from last season’s heavyweight tournament. The night’s main event, which was originally scheduled for Bellator 61 on March 16, was moved to this Friday because of a commission mandate due to Prindle battling flu-like symptoms. Despite the minor setback, “The American Soldier” is itching to not only get his hands on Santos, but to get that heavyweight gold.

“I’m just ready to get into the cage and end this,” Prindle said. “I’m a warrior and want my shot against Konrad.”

But Thiago “Big Monster” Santos doesn’t agree with Prindle’s game plan; and the colossal Brazillian wants to make sure that he’s the one that earns the $100 K and world heavyweight title shot.

“Now I’ve just got one more week to train and one more week to think about winning,” Santos said. “It sounds like Eric may have been sick, and I don’t want to fight with any excuses. I want to beat him at 100 percent.”

Tickets for the event are now on sale and can be purchased online at Ticketmaster.com or by visiting The Laredo Energy Arena Box Office. Tickets are priced from $22-$120. The event will also be broadcast LIVE starting at 7 p.m. CST on MTV2 and in commercial-free HD on EPIX. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. CST, with the first fight scheduled for 6 p.m. CST. The preliminary card, featuring the area’s top talent will be streamed LIVE and FREE around the world on Spike.com starting at 6 p.m. CST.

“It makes sense that this huge fight between two Heavyweights is coming to Texas,” Bellator Chairman & CEO Bjorn Rebney said. “When Oscar Enriquez and his team at Ultimate Warrior Fighting approached me about bringing Bellator live on MTV2 to Laredo, he had all of the right pieces in place and he made the decision an easy one. With our first trip to Laredo already packed with world class talent, adding this Championship fight makes this one of the best event line-ups we’ve ever put together.”

Not only will Bellator 62 decide Bellator Heavyweight World Champion Cole Konrad’s next title opponent, but the talent-laden Laredo card will also feature the quarterfinals of Bellator’s $100,000 Season 6 Lightweight Tournament as well a host of Texas’ top MMA talent.

Coming off an explosive knockout victory over UFC veteran Kurt Pellegrino at Bellator 59, Patricky Pitbull (@PatrickyPitbull) is back and looking to start his ascent toward a title shot with a quarterfinal matchup against fan-favorite Lloyd “Cupcake” Woodard (@mmacupcake). Patricky has produced a number of incredible Bellator “YouTube Moments” and has his sights set on adding another highlight to his collection.

Former U.S. Olympian Judoka Rick Hawn (@RickHawnmma) is making the drop to lightweight and meets the dangerous Ricardo Tirloni (@Tirlonimma). Hawn compiled an impressive 11-1 record as a welterweight, but is confident the drop in weight will make him even more dangerous.

“I felt like I was sort of undersized in the last tournament,” Hawn said. “Everyone had a height advantage on me, and while I thought I made a good run in my last welterweight tournament, I think lightweight is going to be a better fit for me and just give me an advantage over everyone else.”

Also making the drop to lightweight is longtime Bellator veteran Brent Weedman (@brent_weedman). Always looking for a finish, “Weedman Nation” will be on full display as he battles Bellator newcomer J.J. Ambrose (@SuperJJAmbrose).

“I’ve already tested myself with a lightweight weight cut and I felt great,” Weedman said. “Over the last year, I’ve felt a little undersized as a welterweight, so I think lightweight is going to be a great spot for me. I’m excited to show off my new skills, and this tournament is stacked, so we’re going to put on a show this season.”

Rounding out an absolutely loaded tournament class, Rene “The Brazilian Bomber” Nazare (@Nazaremma) will square off with top prospect Thiago Michel. A product of Team Bombsquad, Nazare always has his eye on delivering the knockout, and nothing will change on March 23rd.

The undefeated Trey Houston looks to keep his spotless record intact as he battles Bellator veteran Jeremiah Riggs in a middleweight affair. No stranger to being in front of the camera, Riggs has appeared on Spike’s TNA’s Impact Wrestling as well as WWE’s Tough Enough.

Baton Rouge native and dangerous welterweight Eric Scallan looks to impress in his Bellator debut when he takes on Derrick Krantz, who calls Texas home. Scallan enters the fight riding a three-fight win streak, and will look to keep the momentum going from The Riverdome.

“Louisiana’s been like a second home to Bellator,” Bellator Chairman & CEO Bjorn Rebney. “Our last two Louisiana events we’re spectacular sell outs, so when we had the chance to bring Bellator to The Riverdome, it was a very easy decision.
