CWFC 74: MAGUIRE vs. WHEELER

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Wednesday, September 3, 2014

John Maguire, the five-time UFC veteran, will be aiming to return to winning ways when he faces fellow Englishman Brad Wheeler in a lightweight contest at Cage Warriors 74 at the Copper Box Arena in London's Olympic Park on Saturday, November 15, 2014.

(London, United Kingdom | Wednesday, September 3, 2014) - A lightweight bout between John Maguire and Brad Wheeler has been set for Cage Warriors 74.

The event, which takes place at the Copper Box Arena in London’s Olympic Park on Saturday, November 15, 2014, will also feature a historic CWFC women’s bantamweight world title fight between Pannie Kianzad and Agnieszka Niedzwiedz.

Maguire (19-8), who hails from England, will be competing on home soil for the first time in over two years, with his last outing in the UK coming in September 2012 when he took on John Hathaway under the umbrella of the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

A five-fight veteran of the UFC, where he accumulated a 2-3 record, Maguire signed for Cage Warriors Fighting Championship last October and debuted with a unanimous-decision victory over Philip Mulpeter at CWFC 63.

The 31-year-old, who has been stopped just twice in his 27 professional contests, will be keen to return to winning ways on November 15, following consecutive defeats to Saul Rogers and Damir Hadzovic.

Maguire said: “I’m very determined to show people that John Maguire has still got it. I’m not even thinking about title contention or anything like that at the moment.

“Brad Wheeler has looked great in his last few fights and he’s on a bit of a roll, but the bottom line is that he’s not going to beat me.”

Currently in his best run of form to date, Wheeler (13-9) will be aiming for his fifth successive win when he takes on fellow Englishman Maguire in London on November 15.

The 24-year-old has taken twelve of his thirteen career victories by stoppage, eleven of which have come via submission, including his most recent triumphs against Jason Cooledge and David Howell earlier in 2014.

An eleven-fight Cage Warriors veteran, Wheeler also holds notable wins over the UFC’s Ian Entwistle and CWFC pair Wesley Murch and Merv Mulholland.

“This is the biggest fight of my career so far and I’m looking forward to it a lot,” said Wheeler, who has been stopped just once in his last fifteen bouts.

“I believe I’m up there among the very best lightweights in the UK and this is my opportunity to prove that.”

More exciting CWFC 74 bouts are still to be announced, and tickets will go on sale soon.

TWELVE NEW ADDITIONS TO CAGE WARRIORS' ROSTER

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Wednesday, July 9, 2014

CWFC signs twelve more fighters to exclusive deals, including Wrzosek, McCafferty, Lansberg and Hadbi.

(London, United Kingdom | Wednesday, July 9, 2014) - Cage Warriors Fighting Championship is pleased to confirm the addition of twelve more athletes to its stable of talent.

All twelve have signed five-fight deals which will commit them exclusively to Cage Warriors for a minimum period of 18 months.

Among the exciting new signings are Polish featherweight Marcin Wrzosek (pictured), undefeated Irish featherweight Tommy McCafferty and highly-rated Swedish women’s bantamweight Lina Akhtar Lansberg.

Cage Warriors CEO Graham Boylan said: “These twelve fighters are excellent additions to our roster and are all capable of competing at the top of their respective divisions, so we’re very happy to be welcoming them to the promotion.”

The new batch of signings also includes flyweights Amir Albazi and Andy Young, bantamweight trio Jamie Pritchard, Moktar Benkaci and Suleiman Bouhata, featherweight Dean Trueman, lightweight Brad Wheeler, welterweight Tahar Hadbi and middleweight Alan Carlos.

Amir Albazi (4-0) is a 20-year-old English-based flyweight who has taken all four of his wins to date via stoppage, three of which have come inside the first round.

Lina Akhtar Lansberg (2-1) impressed on her Cage Warriors debut at CWFC 66 this past March en route to a third-round TKO win over Emma Delaney.

Moktar Benkaci (11-4-0-1nc), who was narrowly edged out by former bantamweight world title contender James Brum on his CWFC debut, joins the Cage Warriors roster on the back of a big TKO win against Spanish veteran Jose Luis Zapater.

Suleiman Bouhata (9-5) tasted defeat to former featherweight world title contender Graham Turner on his CWFC debut last month, but the 23-year-old Frenchman will look to return to winning ways when he drops a weight class to join the bantamweight ranks.

Alan Carlos (11-8), a BJJ black belt who defeated Mike Ling at CWFC Fight Night 6 in Bahrain back in May 2012, signs for Cage Warriors following his recent first-round KO of former Pride veteran Daniel Acacio.

Tahar Hadbi (10-5), a 26-year-old Algerian welterweight, earns a CWFC deal on the back of his dominant decision triumph over Michael Johnson at CWFC Fight Night 11 in Amman in April of this year.

Tommy McCafferty (5-0) will be searching for his sixth consecutive win inside the distance when he makes his promotional debut at CWFC 70 in Dublin on August 16.

Jamie Pritchard (6-3) secured a third successive win when he debuted for Cage Warriors at CWFC 67 in Swansea this past April with a slick second-round submission of Phil Raeburn.

Dean Trueman (4-2), a 24-year-old domestic champion in the UK, will be eager to establish himself as one of Europe’s top featherweight prospects when he makes his CWFC debut.

Brad Wheeler (13-9), who stretched his win-streak to four fights at the expense of Jason Cooledge at CWFC 69: Super Saturday, returns to the Cage Warriors roster after a two-year spell as a free agent.

Marcin Wrzosek (8-2) recently picked up a career-best win at CWFC 69: Super Saturday when he became the first fighter to overcome top English prospect Arnold Allen.

Andy Young (6-5), who also returns to action at next month’s CWFC 70 in Dublin, has put together a solid 5-1 run at 125lbs since a defeat to Mark Connor on his CWFC debut in Glasgow at CWFC 50 in December 2012.
