ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (April 25 2013) - Former NABC World lightweight title-holder "Merciless" Mary McGee (20-1, 11 KOs) is going to Albuquerque with nothing but respect for her opponent, 14-time, three-division world champion Holly "The Preacher's Daughter" Holm (32-2-3, 9 KOs).  She's also heading there to spoil the soon-to-be-retired Holm's final appearance in a boxing ring, on Saturday night, May 11, at Route 66 Casino Hotel in Albuquerque.

Holm recently announced that she will retire from boxing after this fight to pursue her mixed-martial-arts career.  McGee will challenge Holm for her International Boxing Association (IBA) and World Boxing Federation (WBF) junior welterweight titles in the 10-round main event on the "Mayhem" card, presented by Fresquez Productions.

Fighting out of Gary, Indiana, McGee earned her title shot against Holm by stopping Victoria Cisneros (TKO4) in her last fight (December 7), on a card headlined by Holm vs.Diana Prazak. The rugged Cisneros had been the full distance against the likes of, among the more notables, Holm (twice), Cecelia Braekhus, Layla McCarter, Chevelle Hallback and Melissa Hernandez.

"I appreciate the opportunity to fight Holly Holm, who is the biggest name in our sport," McGee said.  "A fight like this is good for our sport and I'm glad to be in it.  She is a true champion who has always fought the best. They saw what I could do there in my last fight.  I want to challenge myself to fight the best and have trained hard for that.  I'm at that level now.  In basketball, teams don't choose who to play next, and I think women's boxing should be the same way, fighting the next in line.  Cecilia chose to fight Mia (St. John) in her last fight, instead of Holly, and that decision hurt our sport.  I think it was stupid and made us all look bad."

Described as a good boxer-puncher, McGee believes her ability to fight a variety of different ways presents the biggest problem for her opponent, who Mary says, "Brings her experience as world champion against the best and self-confidence into the ring.  I could go on and on about her.  She's also a smart fighter who has been there, done that, and is always focused.

"I take nothing away from her and look forward to being in a great fight. But, flat out, I want to win.  I will not disrespect Holly in anyway.  I have nothing but respect for all she's done in boxing.  I do believe in myself and look forward to a great fight."

Also fighting on "Mayhem" is a group of New Mexico's most promising prospects. Albuquerque lightweight Matthew Baca (2-1, 2 KO's) takes on Armando Gonzales (2-2, 1 KO) in a six-round bout.  On the undercard in four rounds matches are welterweight Rocky "El Torito" Romero (2-0, 2 KOs) vs. 11-fight veteran Michael Coca Gallegos, light middleweight Cris Leyva (1-0) vs. Manuel Eastman (1-3), lightweights making their professional debuts, Gabe Gabaldon vs. Brandon Salazar, and cruiserweights making their pro debuts, Manny Rocha vs. Floyd Olguin, Jr.  All fights and fighters are subject to change.

Tickets, ranging between $25.00 and $200.00, are on sale and available to purchase at the Route 66 box office, going online to www.rt66casino.com, or calling 505.884.7484.

Holly Holm retiring from boxing after May 11 fight to pursue MMA career

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (April 16, 2013, 2013) - Today at a Fresquez Productions media luncheon, 14-time, three-division world boxing champion Holly "The Preacher's Daughter" Holm (32-2-3, 9 KOs) shocked the combat sports world by announcing her retirement from boxing, effective after her May 11 fight with "Merciless" Mary McGee (20-1, 11 KOs), in order to pursue her mixed-martial-arts career (3-0-0).

"Since I first started fighting, it became my passion," Holly explained her decision. "I decided a long time ago, after quitting school to fight, that I would box as long as my heart was in it. One of my biggest and controversial fights was against Christy Martin. Then, it was Mary Jo Sanders. There's always a champion. This is my own journey. Every one of my fights have helped me to believe in myself.

"When we were deciding which way to go with my future, my trainer, Mike Winkeljohn, said it best, 'You want to climb a new mountain.' This thing has created a new spark in me and I'm following my heart. I wish much success to Cecilia (Braekhus) but not fighting her does not, by any means, define my boxing career. I know there's a lot of talk about that but what does that say about all the women I've already fought?  I've never been a paper champion. I've grown so much every step of the way. I'm in this fight, on May 11,100 percent; I'm not distracted. This is obviously an emotional, spiritual and physical journey and I'm so grateful for the people who have supported me. I just want to fight where my passion is (MMA). I train in an MMA gym and always have."

Holm defends her International Boxing Association and World Boxing Federation (WBF) junior welterweight titles in the 10-round main event on the "Mayhem" card, presented by Fresquez Productions, at Route 66 Casino Hotel in Albququerque, New Mexico.

"I love Holly's team - the chemistry, the fans, the loyalty," Holm's promoter Lenny Fresquez said.  "Regarding Cecilia - Holly doesn't need anybody! She is headed toward the boxing (International) Hall of Fame and is already named for the New Mexico Boxing Hall of Fame. We will continue the Holly Holm saga. She's at the top of her game and we support her history-making decision."

The 31-year-old Holm has defeated a Who's Who list of woman boxers from the 140 through 154-pound weight classes, including Christy Martin, Anne Sophie Mathis, Mary Jo Sanders, Mia St. John, Jane Couch, Duda Yankovich and Chevelle Hallback (twice).

Holm has an amazing 21-1-1 record in world championship fights, as well as a 14-1-1 mark against world champions.

"We are going forward with Holly's MMA career and there's nobody better than Lenny Fresquez to take us to that next level," Holm's manager/trainer Mike Wonkeljohn added.  "I found it hard to bounce back and forth between MMA and boxing. Holly is focused. Expect the best Holly ever. Her future is bright."

Braekhus ducks Holm for Mega-boxing match Holm fighting on Feb. 28 Bellator show in N.M.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (January 26, 2013) - Less than 24 hours after the World Boxing Council (WBC) Female Championship Committee ordered a mega-fight between undefeated WBC welterweight champion Cecilia "First Lady" Braekhus (21-0, 5 KOs) and 14-time, three-division world champion Holly "The Preacher's Daughter" Holm (32-2-3, 9 KOs), Braekhus' promoter, Sauerland Boxing, notified Holm's promoter, Fresquez Productions, that Braekhus had instead agreed to fight 45-year-old Mia "The Knockout" St. John (47-12-2, 18 KOs) on April 13 in Denmark.

Fresquez has announced that Holm (2-0 MMA) will be fighting on a Bellator mixed-martial-arts event February 28 at Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. "We're not waiting around to fight anybody," Fresquez noted. "Holly can be a world champion in MMA, too. We can't make Braekhus fight Holly. Unfortunately, the dilemma for Holly is that there just aren't any big names left for her to box, at least those ready and willing to fight her."

The WBC had awarded the distinction of the Diamond Belt for the Braekhus-Holm fight because "it is regarded as one of the best fights in the history of female boxing." Sauerland and Fresquez had discussions prior to the WBC's order and, if the promoters were unable to reach an agreement - negotiations have now broken off due to Sauerland's announcement that Braekhus is fighting St. John - that the WBC will conduct a purse bid Friday, February 15 at its headquarters in Mexico City.

Sauerland has reportedly requested an exception from the ordered mandatory defense for Braekhus in order for her to fight St. John. Fresquez has requested an answer from the WBC regarding how the Braekhus-Holm purse bid will proceed, as well as having additionally petitioned the World Boxing Association (WBA) to order its welterweight champion, Braekhus, to fight No. 1 challenger Holm in a mandatory defense.

Last December, Sauerland sent a video tape to Fresquez and media outlets, in which Braekhus challenged the WBC & WBA No. 1-rated Holm to a Sauerland-proposed July fight in Las Vegas, which was quickly accepted, pending final terms.

"This is an embarrassment for our sport," Fresquez said. "Holly Holm is the Queen of Boxing and she was ready to fight Braekhus. They've been using Holly's name for the last two years, so they could build Braekhus' name, and we've been chasing her for that long. Based on their decision to fight Mia, they obviously aren't serious about fighting Holly. I don't understand why they challenged Holly and then, after we had accepted their challenge, ducked her again. Maybe they expected certain demands from us, giving them an easy way out of the fight, to make them look good in the media and public. In that video, Breakhus made a big deal about Holly being knocked out by (Ann Sophie) Mathis, but Holly showed the heart of a champion by sticking to her game plan to win their rematch. Braekhus used Holly's same game plan to beat Mathis. Sauerland and Braekhus have turned their backs, once again, on being in the greatest women's fight of all-time, which is another black eye for women's boxing."

St. John is a two-time world champion who has lost six of 11 fights since her 2005 defeat by way of a 10-round shutout decision (100-90 on all three judges' scorecards) to Holm.

Here's a look at a direct comparison between Holm and St. John, in terms of the more legitimate challenger for Braekhus, who also reigns as the World Boxing Organization (WBO) 147-pound female champion:

WBC orders Cecilia Braekhus vs.Holly Holm mega-fight

Fresquez logo

                   Holly Holm                                                   Cecilia Braekhus

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (January 23, 2013) - The World Boxing Council (WBC) Female Championship Committee has ordered a mega-fight between undefeated WBC welterweight champion Cecilia "First Lady" Braekhus (21-0, 5 KOs) and 14-time, three-division world champion Holly "The Preacher's Daughter" Holm (32-2-3, 9 KOs).

The WBC has awarded the distinction of the Diamond Belt for the Braekhus-Holm fight because "it is regarded as one of the best fights in the history of female boxing."

If the promoters for Braekhus (Sauerland Boxing) and Holm (Fresquez Productions) are unable to reach an agreement, the WBC will conduct a purse bid Friday, February 15 at the its headquarters in Mexico City.

"Sometimes you need to be careful what you ask for," Holm's promoter Lenny Fresquez warned. "This reminds me of Mary Jo Sanders all over again. We all know what happened there (Holm won 10-round decision for IBA light middleweight title and then they fought to a draw) and we never heard from her after she challenged Holly (in 2008)."

Braekhus issued a video challenge to WBC No. 1-rated Holm after Holly's last fight in December, which Holm quickly accepted, pending terms, for a July fight in Las Vegas.   Talks between Kallie Sauerland and Lenny Fresquez had already started before the WBC's order (Jan. 17) was sent to the two promoters.

Braekhus has owned the WBC welterweight championship since 2009, when she defeated Vinni Skovgaard by 10-round decision. The Colombian boxer who lives in Norway has made 10 consecutive title defenses. She is also the reigning World Boxing Association (WBA) and World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight champion.

Holm held the WBC welterweight title in 2007 and 2008, stopping Miriam Brakache in the seventh round, and she made one successful title defense against Ann Saccurato with a win by 10-round decision before relinquishing the WBC 147-pound division belt. Holm has also been world champion in the light welterweight and light middleweight divisions.

Holly Holm accepts challenge for potential Women's mega-fight vs. Cecilia Braekhus

Fresquez logo

Holly HolmCecilia Braekhus

                   Holly Holm                                                   Cecilia Braekhus

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (December 20, 2012) - Negotiations are about to begin for arguably the most anticipated match-up in women's professional boxing history between 14-time, three-division world champion Holly "The Preacher's Daughter" Holm (32-2-3, 9 KOs) and undefeated Cecilia "First Lady" Braekhus (21-0, 5 KOs), considered by most to be the top two female pound-for-pound boxers in the world, for July in Las Vegas.

Braekhus issued a challenge by way of a video tape shown after Holm's recent victory against Diana Prazak at Route 66 Casino Hotel in Albuquerque. After introducing herself as the World Boxing Council, World Boxing Association and World Boxing organization welterweight champion, Braekhus said the following, directed to Holm: "I have an important message for you. Your promoter (Lenny Fresquez) has been saying that this fight (vs. Anne Sophie Mathis) confirms that Holly is the No. 1 female fighter in the world. I do understand that you are avoiding me, but listen carefully: next July I will be in Las Vegas. You will meet me there? Let's find out who is the best female fighter in the world."

The Colombian-born, Norway-residing Braekhus has fought only once outside of Europe (WDEC6 vs, Nicole Woods) as a professional, in 2008 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel in Hollywood, Florida.  Thirty-four of Holm's 37 home fights have been in her hometown, Albuquerque, where she regularly sells-out with crowds in excess of 3,000.

"I'd love to fight her to make that happen," Holm proclaimed as she accepted Braekhus' challenge. "Lenny (Fresquez) will talk to them. I appreciate her wanting to make the fight, as well; that's the only way we can get a good fight. Two fighters mutually agreeing to fight is what it comes down to. I'm honored that she has challenged me.

"I would never make a video of myself to send to someone. That's not my style. I'm open to fighting her, really, wherever. I've always been open to fighting, wherever, and I think there's a big misconception that, oh, I only fight here. I fight here (Albuquerque) because the opportunities have been here, and that's the bottom line. If there's an opportunity that it's going to be in Las Vegas, then, by all means, let's make it happen."

Holm and Braekhus, combined, are 33-1-1 in world title fights, as well as 19-1-1 in fights against other world champions (Holm is 22-1-1 and 14-1-1, respectively, Braekhus 11-0 and 5-0). Holm has an overwhelming advantage in experience fighting quality opponents, having defeated a Who's Who of women boxers, from the light welterweight through light middleweight divisions, including Christy Martin, Jane Couch, Mary Jo Sanders, Chevelle Hallback and Terri Blair twice apiece, Duda Yankovich, Myriam Lamare, and Mia St. John. Braekhus, who has also defeated Hallback, is coming off a 10-round decision over Mathis, whom Holm split two fights with in the past year. An amazing 212 of Holm's 275 pro rounds fought have been in world championships; Braekhus has 100 of 154

Fresquez hopes that Braekhus and her promoter, Sauerland Boxing, are serious about coming to Las Vegas and fighting Holm. "I've been negotiating with them for two years and they've avoided Holly," Fresquez reported. "I sent Katie Sauerland, I think that's her name, an email but have not gotten a response back. I understand why - Holly is the pound-for-pound champion of the world. Cecilia carries a lot of belts but most are those that Holly vacated. Cecilia is kind of carrying Holly's leftovers.

"I know who the best fighter is, the reigning Queen of Boxing, Holly Holm! It's Cecilia's job to fight Holly and try to take her crown away by beating her. We know that she's in the top five, pound-for-pound, but Holly is the best. You have to beat the best to be the best."

The great Lucia Rijker, who trained Prazak for her fight with Holm, added, "That (Holm vs. Braekhus) would be a phenomenal fight."

Women's mega-fights are difficult to pull off for a wide variety of reasons. Two perfect examples of mega-fights that failed to materialize are Laila Ali vs. Ann Wolfe and Rijker vs. Martin.

Fresquez is pressing hard to make what potentially could be the greatest fight in women's boxing history.

Holly 'The Preacher's Daughter' Holm The True Queen of Boxing

Holly Holm

ALBUQUERQUE, NM (September 18, 2012) - The true Queen of Boxing is 12-time, three division world champion Holly "The Preacher's Daughter" Holm (31-2-3, 9 KOs), who this past June 15th avenged her loss last December 2nd to French knockout artist Ann Sophie Mathis (26-2, 22 KOs) at Route 66 Casino Hotel in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Fan-favorite Holm captured the IBA, WBF and WBAN title belts, as well as the mythical women's pound-for-pound crown, with her 10-round decision over Mathis, whose 26-fight win streak, dating back to 1995, was snapped.

"Holly overshadows the September 25 fight between (Cecilia) Braekhus and Mathis (in Denmark) because she's the best woman fighter in the world," Holm's promoter Lenny Fresquez said. "She proved it by beating Mathis. They're fighting for all but one belt that Holly relinquished. You have to beat the best in order to be the best and Holly has done that many, many times. Holly defeated Mathis to regain her pound-for-pound supremacy in women's boxing. The winner of Braekhus-Mathis may be the Princess, or Duchess of Boxing, but Holly Holm is the true Queen of Boxing.   Braekhus and Mathis are fighting to determine the second-best woman boxer in the world today.

"Holly is one of the few female boxers ever to regularly sell-out fights, 3000 fans every show she headlines, something few men boxers do today. Despite being the second-best woman boxer in the world, Mathis was virtually unknown in women's boxing, outside of France, when she first fought Holly. She gained more media exposure fighting Holly than she had during her entire boxing career. Mathis was the best pound-for-pound women's boxer in the world for 7-½ months, until Holly beat her in their rematch, earning Holly the coveted No. 1 pound-for-pound title again. We will announce Holly's next fight on September 25, proving once again that she ducks no legitimate world title challenger."

During the course of her incredible 10-½ year professional career, Holm is 14-1-1 against other world champions, from the 140 through 154-pound weight classes, including Mathis, Christy Martin, Mary Jo Sanders, Mia St. John, Jane Couch,Chevelle Hallback (twice), Duda Yankovich, Terry Blair (twice), Anne Succurato(twice), Belinda Laracuente and Jaime Clampitt.
