Guillermo Rigondeaux promises explosive Fireworks display New Year's Eve in Japan

PRESS RELEASE
For Immediate Release

Undefeated, unified world super bantamweight champion
Guillermo Rigondeaux training in Japan

OSAKA, Japan (Dec. 29, 2014) -- After enduring a frustrating year in which he has fought only once, unified world super bantamweight champion Guillermo "The Jackal" Rigondeaux (14-0, 9 KOs) is prepared to defend his World Boxing Organization (WBO) title belt this Wednesday, New Year's Eve, against WBO No. 6 rated challenger Hisashi Amagasa (28-4-2, 19 KOs) at Bodymaker Colosseum in Osaka, Japan.

Rigondeaux, who resides in Miami, is also the World Boxing Association (WBA) Super and The Ring Magazine super bantamweight champion.

The 34-year-old Rigondeaux, a two-time Olympic gold medalist from Cuba, arrived Dec. 21 in Japan and the pound-for-pound star is extremely grateful for the overwhelmingly warm reception he has received from countless Japanese boxing fans who've watched him train or approached him in Osaka.

Last July in Macao, Rigondeaux successfully defended his WBO/WBA Super titles, destroying challenger Sod Kokietgym (63-2-1) in the opening round of the ultra-skilled Cuban's lone fight to date in 2014.

The 5' 10 ½" Amagasa towers over the diminutive Rigondeaux, who is 6 ½ inches shorter than his Japanese opponent. Rigondeaux, however, isn't concerned in the least about their differences in height because of his past success against many taller foes.

"This is my second time fighting in Asia this year," Rigondeaux said. "I am very
frustrated that the other world belt holders are running scared and won't fight me. It's disgraceful that we couldn't find a world-class, 122-pound fighter to fight me, so, I would like to thank Amagasa for dropping down from featherweight (126 lbs. division) to challenge me. I will put on an explosive fireworks display on New Year's Eve in Japan."

Unfortunately, Rigondeaux vs. Amagasa will not be televised in the US or Europe, however, there will be an estimated 30-million Japanese fans tuning in to
watch 'Rigo' perform.

Japanese press have reported that Rigondeaux is the biggest star to fight in Japan in nearly a quarter-century, since "Iron" Mike Tyson fought against James "Buster" Douglas there in February 1990, describing Rigondeaux as a "Monster Superstar."

'We have already been offered a fight against another Japanese challenger in Japan this coming May," Rigondeaux' manager Gary Hyde added. "Rigondeaux is in tremendous condition, as always, and we are very confident going into this fight on New Year's Eve that 'Rigo' will put on a another stellar performance.

"In January, we will sit down and discuss the terms of a promotional contract that was initially offered to us this past summer and is now back on the table. Hopefully, we will come to an agreement with this promotional company and 'Rigo' will be back fighting on mainstream television networks in 2015."

Hyde also reported that if, as reports have circulated, WBC super bantamweight champion Leo Santa Cruz (20-0-1, 16 KOs) is seriously interested in fighting Rigondeaux, "Rigo" will return from Japan to fight Santa Cruz in a major unification bout January 17 in Las Vegas.  Santa Cruz is scheduled to fight an opponent to be determined in the 12-round co-feature on a card headlined by the WBC heavyweight title fight, airing live from MGM Grand on Showtime, between defending champion Bermane Stiverne and mandatory challenger Deontay Wilder.

Beibut Shumenov Goes Back to the Future

Ready to challenge world cruiserweight champions

(all pictures courtesy of Ed de la Vega)

LAS VEGAS (December 23, 2014) - Combining the invaluable experience he gained as world light heavyweight champion with a different style of boxing introduced to him by his new head trainer, Ismael Salas, Beibut Shumenov used his impressive cruiserweight debut Dec. 13 to prove his legitimacy as a world title contender in the 200-pound division.

Shumenov (15-2, 10 KOs), a former World Boxing Association (WBA) light heavyweight champion and 2004 Kazakhstan Olympian, outclassed opponent Bobby Thomas, Jr. (14-3, 9 KOs) on his way to victory by way of a fifth-round technical knockout.

"It's much easier for me fighting at 200 pounds than 175," Shumenov explained. "My body couldn't take it anymore. When I first came to America seven years ago, I planned to fight as a heavyweight or cruiserweight because I weighed 240-245 pounds. When I moved here to Las Vegas everybody my size were super middleweights and light heavyweights. The decision was made then for me to fight as a light heavyweight.

"I'm not making excuses but I lost 55 pounds for my last fight. I saw opportunities but my body failed me. I wanted to throw punches but my body didn't respond. I made a decision to move up to cruiserweight and also added a great head coach, Ismael Salas. He teaches the Cuban boxing style and (assistant trainer) Jeff (Grmoja) uses an old-school American style. And Rodney Crisler (team member) shares his knowledge, too. I have a great team supporting me."

The 31-year-old Shumenov, currently the No. 2 rated cruiserweight in the WBA, captured the WBA light heavyweight title January 29, 2010 with a 12-round decision over Gabriel Campillo in only his 10th professional fightto establish the fewest-fights record for a world light heavyweight champion. Five successful title defenses followed but the muscular Shumenov had more and more problems making weight, in addition to being self-trained in his last three fights prior to last Saturday's in Las Vegas.

Equally important as moving up in weight to avoid sapping his strength was adding Salas to his corner. Salas came to the United States 25 years ago and he has trained the likes of Guillermo Rigondeaux, Yuriokis Gamboa, Danny Green, Jesse Vargas and Jorge Linares.

The Cuban boxing style Salas teaches is similar to what Shumenov learned in Kazakhstan developing through its then Soviet Union boxing program. Positive chemistry between the two was immediate and early dividends were evident in Shumenov's fight against Thomas.

Post-fight celebration (L-R) cut-man Jacob "Stitch" Duran, Beibut Shumenov, head trainer Ismael Salas, team member Rodney Crisler and Beibut's younger brother, Chingas Shumenov.

"Most importantly," Shumenov noted, "I followed the instructions of my coach in this fight. For us, it wasn't important to knockout my opponent in the first round. This fight was a test for my new style in a real fight. I used my new tools - footwork and more angles to punch. My body listened this fight and it did everything my head wanted to be done. I'm still in the learning process, though."

"I'm very happy that Beibut was so comfortable and that he stuck to the game plan from the first round until the end," Salas commented after the fight. "Every fight is a learning experience. We liked what we saw during the fight; Beibut did everything I asked of him."

Grmoja (far left) has worked with Shumenov for several years and he was amazed at how well Shumenov and Salas clicked in such a relatively short training period. "They only had 78 days working together," Grmoja added. "Beibut completely changed his style and during the fight he didn't go back to fighting the old way like so many guys do. He didn't fight off balance, throw wild punches, or keep his head up and his hands down. He will win the world cruiserweight title in 2015 to become a two-division world champion."

The reigning world cruiserweight champions are WBA Denis Lebedev (Russia), IBF Yoan Pablo Hernandez (Germany), WBC Krzysztof Wlodarczyr and WBO Marco Huck (Germany).

"My power is stronger at cruiserweight because there's no stress on my body to make weight like there was at light heavyweight," Shumenov concluded. "Hopefully, I will get an opportunity early next year to fight for a world title. I'm ready! If not, I want to stay busy until my adviser, Al Haymon, gets me a world cruiserweight title shot."

Lewkowicz Congratulates Escandon, Promises Cave Another Shot

Sampson Logo

Promoter Sampson Lewkowicz sends his congratulations to his fighter, Colombia's Oscar Escandon (24-1, 14 KOs), who captured the interim WBA super bantamweight title with a 12-round split decision over Canada's Tyson Cave (22-3, 6 KOs), Thursday night at the Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, California.

But because of the controversy over the scoring (117-111, 115-113 Escandon against 115-113 Cave), Lewkowicz also has a strong assurance for Canada's Tyson Cave, whom he also promotes.

"I wish to congratulate Oscar Escandon for his victory first of all," said Lewkowicz. "I am very happy for him winning his first world championship. However, I think there is enough question about the decision that I want Tyson Cave to know something: If the WBA doesn't order an immediate rematch of this fight, I am personally making a promise to him that I will get him another big opportunity. He will be back, no matter what."

To most, it appeared Cave had soundly outboxed Escandon throughout their fight, but two of the judges saw a different fight and awarded 30-year-old Escandon the verdict. And so, Lewkowicz says he must wait to see what will play out between the sanctioning body and the two fighters.

"I will see what the WBA does before I make the next move with either fighter," continued Lewkowicz. "And then either they will fight again to prove one clear winner or one will go after (WBA Champ) Scott Quigg and I will find the other another big fight."

Manager Gary Hyde signs Bulgarian amateur star Blagoy 'Golden Boy' Naydenov

Blagoy Naydenov (center) collected numerous gold medals as amateur boxer.

CORK, Ireland (Dec. 3, 2014) - International boxing manager Gary Hyde has announced that his company, Nowhere2Hyde, has signed 18-year-old Bulgarian amateur star Blagoy "Golden Boy" Naydenov to a long-term contract.

Naydenov's long-range goal is to become the first Bulgarian-born male world champion of a major boxing organization.

Last summer, Naydenov captured a gold medal at the prestigious Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China, to go along with his championship winning performances at the Under-19 World Championships and Under-17 European Championships.

Naydanov was considered a top contender, if not the outright favorite, in the light heavyweight division at the 2016 Olympics in Brazil, but he decided to turn professional and sign a managerial deal with Hyde. He is expected to make his pro debut in January, either in the United States or Germany.

"I am absolutely delighted to add one of the best amateurs in the world to our team," Hyde said. "I reached out to Team Naydenov during the past two years to sign this 'Wonder-Kid' and I am obviously very excited that he has decided to turn pro under my guidance. At the tender age of 18, Blagoy will be a major force in the light heavyweight division in a couple of years."

Hyde has quickly developed into a power-broker in worldwide boxing as manager of a growing list present, past and future world champions, including WBA Super & WBO super bantamweight champion and two-time Cuban Olympic gold medalist Guillermo "The Jackal" Rigondeaux (14-0, 9 KOs), WBA Interim cruiserweight champion Youri "El Toro" Kalenga (21-1, 14 KOs), former WBO middleweight champion and current IBF mandatory challenger Hassan N'Dam N'Jikam (31-1, 18 KOs), former world junior middleweight title challenger Michel Soro (23-1-1, 13 KOs) and Georgian junior welterweight prospect Levan "The Wolf" Ghvamichava (13-1, 10 KOs).

Born in Sofia, Naydenov was a member of the Slavia Boxing Club, also the home-base for the last boxer to defeat the great Floyd Mayweather, Jr.,Serafim Todorov, as well as Olympic champion Daniel Petrov. Todorovc defeated the 19-year-old Mayweather by way of a controversial decision in their semifinals match, 10-9, at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.   Petrov was a light flyweight who won a gold medal at the 1996 Olympics and silver at the 1992 Olympics.

Naydenov is a highly technical boxer who enjoys fighting on the outside, but he's equally adept at mixing it up inside, if needed. "The decision to turn pro wasn't a very tough one," Naydenov told Bulgaria Today. "The money isn't enough in Olympic boxing. The initial plan is to fight 5 or 6 times a year."

Jarrod Fletcher's Promotional Team Believe an Upset is Imminent against Daniel Geale

Greg Cohen and Adam Wilcock of Greg Cohen Promotions (GCP) say their fighter, former world title challenger and WBA #8-ranked Jarrod "Left Jab" Fletcher (18-2, 10 KOs), is poised to spring an upset over former IBF/WBA middleweight champion Daniel "Real Deal" Geale (30-3, 16 KOs).

In a fight that had to happen eventually, the two Australian middleweights will finally square off in a 12-round battle for the WBA's PABA Middleweight Title, the IBF Pan Pacific Middleweight Championship and the interim WBO Asia Pacific middleweight titles on Wednesday, December 3, at the Horden Pavilion in Moore Park, Sydney and live on Main Event pay-per-view. The Australian super fight is presented by Grange Old School Boxing.

"Jarrod wanted this fight for a long time," said Cohen. "He's convinced he has the stuff to beat Geale and a lot of the late money on the fight is saying there are many, like us, who believe him."

Fletcher, 30, has already held the PABA Middleweight and Australian Middleweight Championships, but has spent much of his career in the shadow of Geale and his world championship belts.

"Jarrod has always felt he was a better fighter than Geale and now he finally has the chance to prove it," said Wilcock, GCP's Vice President of Global Operations and President of FightCard Promotions. "He's trained harder than I've ever seen him in preparation. This will be the best version of Jarrod Fletcher ever seen. He's very pumped up for this."

Fletcher and Geale will also be competing for elevated positions in the WBA, IBF & WBO rankings and an eventual chance at vying for a world title.

"Our fighter will be in a terrific position for another try at a world championship after this fight," continued Cohen. "There is tremendous significance, both on the Australian boxing scene and internationally and Jarrod is well aware of it. He's ready to pull off the upset and finally become known as Australia's best middleweight."
