Palacios to face Knockout Artist Mendoza September 20!

Orlando, FL (September 2, 2014) – Francisco “The Wizard” Palacios will have a tough task at hand when he comes off a two year layoff to battle heavy-handed Epifanio Mendoza September 20 at the Mela Room in Orlando, FL.

Originally from Barranquilla, Colombia and currently based in Miami, FL, Mendoza has 39 victories, 34 of which came by way of knockout. In 2011, he scored a major upset when he knocked out highly regarded and undefeated Olympian Carlos Negron inside of three rounds. Prior to that, he scored first round knockouts over unbeatens Tukonbo Olajaide and Ruben Williams. A true ring warrior, Mendoza’s also battled world champions Chad Dawson, Jeff Lacy and Beibut Shumenov along with BJ Flores, Lateef Kayode, Rakim Chakhiev, Umberto Savigne, Amir Mansour, Sullivan Barrera, Yunier Dorticos and Jordan Shimmell.

“Epifanio Mendoza is a very dangerous opponent and some are questioning why I’m taking on such a risky guy when I’ve been out of the ring for two years,” said Palacios, an Orlando resident who is now training under the watchful eye of John Scully. “My goal is to win a cruiserweight championship next year and facing a tough challenge in my comeback fight should show everybody how serious I am about making it to the top.”

Palacios, 21-2 (13 KO’s), and Mendoza meet for the USBU cruiserweight belt in the eight round main event of World Wide Elite Entertainment’s “The Comeback”.

JUAN CARLOS BURGOS TO TAKE ON DAULIS PRESCOTT ON JULY 26TH AT THUNDER VALLEY CASINO RESORT ON ESPN’S FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHTS

PHILADELPHIA, PA (July 1, 2013)—It will be a battle of former world title challengers on July 26th as Juan Carlos Burgos will square off with Daulis Prescott in a twelve round bout for the WBO Intercontinental Jr. Lightweight title that will be held at  the beautiful Thunder Valley Casino Resort in Sacramento, California.

The fight is promoted by Banner Promotions and Thompson Boxing and will be broadcasted live on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights.

Juan Carlos Burgos of Tijuana, Mexico has a record 30-1-1 with twenty knockouts and most in boxing are calling him an “Uncrowned World Champion” for his effort on January 19th,   when he battled WBO Jr. Lightweight champion Roman Martinez to a draw.  Most at ringside and the millions watching on HBO believed that Burgos deserved to walk out of Madison Square Garden with the belt but the judges didn’t see it that way as the fight was scored 117-111 for Burgos, 116-112 for Martinez and 114-114.

The twenty-six year old is unbeaten in his last six fights, which include wins over undefeated Luis Cruz and Cesar Vazquez, as well as former world champion Cristobal Cruz.

Daulis Prescott of Barranquilla, Colombia has an impressive mark of 26-2 with nineteen knockouts.

Like Burgos, Prescott is also twenty-six years old.  He rose up in the rankings by winning his first twenty-three bouts.  In his last bout, he lost his bid for the WBA Featherweight crown when he came up short against Nicholas Walters on December 8th in Jamaica.

“We are looking forward to getting Juan Carlos back in the ring”, said Banner Promotions CEO Arthur Pelullo.

“Juan Carlos proved in the Martinez fight that he is the best 130 pound fighter in the world.  My partners at Thompson Boxing and I were ecstatic to get a new contract done with him and we feel he will rule at 130 pounds and a great performance on July 26th will get him another shot at the title”.

“It’s important to keep a young fighter like Juan Carlos busy and primed for his next chance to a world title. Daulis Prescott will test him and it should be an excellent fight. Our #1 WBO fighter is just waiting for the next opportunity to show what he is capable of.” said Alex Camponovo of Thompson Boxing.

Special guests scheduled to be in attendance will be former world champions Tony “The Tiger” Lopez, Loreto Garza, James Toney and Hall of Fame referee Joe Cortez.

Lewkowicz Signs Oscar Escandon to Promotional Agreement

Promoter Sampson Lewkowicz proudly announces the signing of undefeated Colombian super bantamweight Oscar Escandon (21-0, 14 KOs) to a promotional agreement.

28-year-old Escandon began boxing at the age of 10 under the guidance of his father, Luis Alfonso Escandon. He had over 200 amateur bouts and proudly represented his homeland in the 2004 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

As a professional, Escandon won the WBC Latino Bantamweight Championship in March of 2011, he with a KO 3 of his countryman Luis Felipe Cuadrado.

Escandon enjoys tremendous popularity in his hometown, the Department of Tolima's capital city of Ibague, in the central region of the Colombian Andes, about 130 miles from Bogota. He is the first athlete from Tolima to represent Colombia in an Olympiad.

Expectations there are very high that he will become the first world champion from the interior of Colombia, thus changing the cycle of Colombian boxing world champions who have exclusively came from the coastal region.

Escandon and manager Francisco Herrera say they're excited to finally be working with a well-respected name like Sampson Boxing and look at it as the golden opportunity they've been waiting for.

"I have been waiting my whole career for someone to get me the fights I want and Sampson is the one who will do it. I have put all my trust in him," said Escandon.

"Oscar is more than ready for this," added Herrera. "We will now be looking to face (WBA Champion) Guillermo Rigondeaux or (WBO Champ) Nonito Donaire. These are the level of fights Oscar belongs in."

"It's an honor to have his trust and I will not disappoint him," said an excited Sampson Lewkowicz, moments after the signing. "Oscar is a tremendous talent, who has been waiting for the right opportunities. I will now secure those opportunities for him and show the world what he's made of. This is a notice to the boxing world that Oscar Escandon is coming."

Dionisio Miranda Steps in to Face Donovan George on Friday Night Fights Season Finale

Colombian Dionisio Miranda (21-7-2, 18 K0s) will step in to face Chicago's Don "Da Bomb" George (22-2-1, 19 KOs) in the 10-round super middleweight co-main event of the ESPN Friday Night Fights 2012 series finale (10 PM Eastern on ESPN2, ESPN Deportes and ESPN3) presented by Warriors Boxing and Tony Holden Productions, scheduled for Friday, August 17, at the Buffalo Run Casino in Miami, Oklahoma.

George's original opponent, Adonis Stevenson, has been forced to pull out of their 12-round elimination bout with a hand injury.

The other 10-round co-main event battle between top junior middleweight contender "King" Carlos Molina (19-5-2, 6 KOs) and Miami's Damian "Devo" Frias (19-4-1, 10 KOs) will go on as scheduled.

Miranda, a veteran who has notable wins over Lujuan Simon and Sebastian Demers, has been on the short end of competitive big fights with Peter Quillen, Roman Karmazin and Renan St Juste. A big puncher who comes to fight, he could create problems for George.

"Adonis Stevenson injured his left hand in sparring last Friday," said a disappointed Yvon Michel, President of Groupe Yvon Michel, Stevenson's promoters. "The next day he went to see a doctor who diagnosed a severe bruise and major swelling. Adonis was not able to close his hand and make a fist. Treatments were done in hopes of improvement but there was not enough progress and under the doctor's advice it was decided to pull Adonis out of his fight."

According to Michel, Stevenson is now in Montreal receiving treatment. The IBF super middleweight title eliminator will be rescheduled for early this fall.

"Team Stevenson and GYM are very disappointed for all the inconvenience this situation has created for ESPN and their programming director, Doug Loughrey, to Warriors Boxing and their president, Leon Margules, and to Tony Holden and the Buffalo Run Casino and Resort. Everyone was so cooperative to make this fight happen. And to all our partners in Canada who were diligently working to program and sell this fight on PPV on short notice, and also to Team George who has carefully prepared for this important encounter. We wish him good luck on Friday."

Warriors Boxing President, Leon Margules, says he's disappointed by this turn of events, but is confident the event will still generate action worthy of the finale of the outstanding 2012 season of Friday Night Fights.

"Donovan is obviously disappointed by this, but we all know these things happen in boxing. We wish Adonis Stevenson a speedy recovery. But what we still have in this event is a compelling junior middleweight fight between two top-tier guys with reputations for pulling off upsets and we've got Donovan George against a Columbian slugger with a difficult style to figure out. So, as sad as we all are about what happened, we still have a good challenge in front of us this Friday and we'll be ready."

Tickets are priced from $35.00 to $65.00 and are available at the Buffalo Run Casino Box Office or online at stubwire.com.

Boxing's best kept secret: Santander 'Demolition Man' Silgado

Santander Silgado
Santander "Demolition Man" Silgado

BROOKLYN (March 13, 2012) -- Undefeated Colombian cruiserweight prospect Santander "Demolition Man" Silgado (20-0, 18 KOs) is the best boxer in the world few American boxing fans have heard of, at least until March 24 when he'll be showcased on the off-NBC Sports Network portion of the Zab Judah-Vernon Paris card at Aviator Sports Complex in Brooklyn.

Silgado, now living in Brooklyn, will be fighting in the United States for only the second time in an eight-round bout against veteran Willie Herring (13-9-3, 4 KOs). The 26-year-old Colombian power puncher stopped Glen Williams by second-round TKO last December in a New Jersey club show.

Silgado-Herring will be taped live and aired the following day on SportsNet New York ("SNY").

"Right now," Silgado's promoter Rob Diaz (Havoc Boxing Promotions) said, "Santander is the best kept secret in boxing, but people will know about him very soon. March 24th will be his first real fight in the United States on a grand scale because he's fighting on the big Main Events-card that's getting a lot of coverage. People will see that Santander is the real deal. He's already starting to shake-up the cruiserweight division and a few top cruiserweights have turned down fights against him. Sooner or later, though, those guys will have to fight him."

A seven-time National amateur champion in his native Colombia, Santander had nearly 200 amateur fights, and started boxing at the age of eight when after some fellow schoolmates asked him to put on gloves. He immediately fell in love with the sweet science but he also has boxing in his blood as the nephew of a well-known Colombian fighter.

"I'm grateful for this opportunity on March 24th and enthusiastic about the fight because I'll be able to show my boxing skills to the world," Silgado recently commented during training camp. "I came to America so my boxing career can help me provide security for my family - wife, two children, parents and brother - who live in Colombia. This year is all about me getting in position for a world-title shot."

Despite living up to his "Demolition Man" nickname, knocking out 18 of 20 pro opponents, Santander understands that he won't be able to put all of his opponents to sleep, especially as he climbs the rating's ladder and his competition gets stiffer. "My boxing skills are what will take me to a world title," he noted. "If knockouts come, great, but I'm not going into a fight looking for a knockout."

Silgado recently cracked the world ratings, presently ranked No. 13 by the World Boxing Association ("WBA"), and No. 15 by the World Boxing Council ("WBC").

His head trainer, Francisco Guzman Sr., has trained world champions such as Hector Acero-Sanchez and Joan Guzman, as well as the late Arturo Gatti during the early years of his pro career. Acero-Sanchez, a Dominican who fought out of the Bronx, was a WBC super bantamweight champion.

"Santander reminds me of Sanchez because he's just as hungry to learn," Guzman added. "They both go to the gym to work hard and learn.
