December 13 in Las Vegas. Many years in the making. Hoping to turn this into a heavily sponsored annual event. This year we are doing it on our own pretty much. Russ Anber of Rival Boxing Products (offices in Montreal and Las Vegas) has graciously allowed us to use his store on Sunset in Las Vegas to meet at.

 

I have found myself over the years enjoying numerous mini-reunions with small groups of former amateur peers of mine, maybe three or four of us at a time at a fight or a similar boxing event), and have always thought how great it would be if somehow a large group of us from my era (late 1980's, Olympic class of 1988) could all meet up somewhere. Former champ William Guthrie told me that he had a similar idea and was even looking into getting sponsorships from airlines and hotels. I then kind of joined forces with William and set out to get such sponsorships but as of yet have been unable to do so.

 

Thinking about it, I realized that I am in touch with a great many former amateur boxers from many different eras (mainly from the 1970's through the early 2000's) and I just decided one day not long ago to let a group of them know I will be in Las Vegas for the WBC Convention in December and that if any of them wanted to come out and get together for a day or so it would be a welcome addition to the trip.

 

What has resulted so far and will continue to build I am sure is a reunion that will see amateur boxers from the Classes of 1980, 1984, 1988, 1992, 1996, 2000 and 2004 gather in Las Vegas on December 13th for what I hope will be the first of many such gatherings!

 

Note: Vinny Paz was forced to withdraw due to the filming of the movie of his life at the same time. Roy Jones Jr. has indicated that he will appear if he is not away at the time on boxing business. I am still awaiting confirmation from the likes of Lamon Brewster, Chris Byrd, Paul Vaden, Otis Grant and many others.

Wizardry: Palacios overcomes layoff to dominateMendoza!

 

Orlando, FL (September 21, 2014) – Cruiserweight star Francisco “Wizard” Palacios looked masterful in dominating hard-hitting contender Epifanio Mendoza of Colombia over eight rounds yesterday evening at the Mela Room in Orlando, FL.

 

Inactive for two years due to promotional difficulties, Palacios surprisingly showed no ring rust. Throughout the contest, the Orlando based Puerto Rican used his technical skills and ring generalship to control Mendoza.

 

Scores were 80-71 three times.

 

With the victory, Palacios, who co-promoted the card under the Worldwide Elite Entertainment banner, ups his professional ledger to 22-2 with 13 KO’s. Mendoza is now 39-19-1 (34 KO’s).

 

“I’m happy with my performance and want to thank my new trainer John Scully for helping me stay sharp,” said Palacios. “This was an excellent opponent for me to comeback against because Mendoza is no joke and I’m setting my sights at getting another world title shot in the near future.”

Talent rich undercard to support Palacios Comeback!

 

Two Olympians and former title contender highlight big undercard!

 

 

Orlando, FL (August 25, 2014) – World Wide Elite Entertainment has put together a talent-rich undercard to support the return of top cruiserweight Francisco Palacios.

 

Dubbed as “The Comeback”, Palacios is fighting in the 8 round main event while also serving as a co-promoter of the Saturday, September 20 card.

 

Tickets are $25 for general admission, $45 to sit ringside and $500 for VIP tables of 6 with bottle service included. They’re on sale by calling 561-702-7068. Contender Mike Marrone of Vero Beach, FL enters the squared circle for the first time since 2011 when he battles fellow Floridian Sam “Slam Bam” Tillman of Bradenton in a six round heavyweight contest. Marrone, 20-4 (15 KO’s), fought Guillermo Jones for the WBA cruiserweight belt in 2011, but was stopped in the sixth round by his supremely talented foe. In Tillman’s last bout, he upset Moises Droz via third round knockout and is confident he’ll score another big victory on the 20^th.

 

2008 Olympian Carlos Negron looks for his third straight knockout victory against an opponent to be announced in a six round heavyweight scrap. The heralded Negron’s got an excellent 15-1 professional ledger with 11 wins by knockout and has his sights set on becoming the next world champion from the boxing-rich commonwealth ofPuerto Rico.

 

With only one fighter under his belt, 2008 Cuban Olympian and undefeated middleweight Idel Torriente steps up to a six round bout when he faces durable veteran Joel Vargas of Kansas. The Miami-based Torriente, 1-0 (1 KO), has amateur wins against current world champion Nicholas Walters, unbeaten knockout artist Javier Fortuna and contender Abner Cotto amongst others. The iron-chinned Vargas forced Michael Finney, Emmanuel De Jesus, Enver Halili, Mark Salser and Dillon Cook to go the distance.

 

Local favorites James “Buddy” McGirt Jr, Christian Camacho, Jelame Garcia, Joshua Pagan and Lorenzo Ramos will also appear in separate four or six round matches.

Palacios Teams Up with John Scully!

Orlando, FL (August 21, 2014) – Cruiserweight contender Francisco “The Wizard” Palacios is now training under the tutelage of John Scully.

 

Palacios, 21-2 (13 KO’s), returns to the squared circle after a 2 year layoff to face James Johnson for the USBU cruiserweight title in the 8 round main event of a card Saturday, September 20 at the Mela Room in his hometown of Orlando, FL.

 

Dubbed as the “Iceman”, Scully was 38-11 as a prizefighter, and is known as one of the most knowledgeable voices boxing. Since retiring from swapping punches in 2001 Scully’s trained world champions Chad Dawson and Jose Rivera, as well as contenders Mike Oliver, Matt Godfrey and Ray Oliveira amongst many others.

 

Palacios said of his new trainer, “I think John is going to get me to the next level and I’ve wanted to make it to the top since I was an amateur. I believe he’s the kind of trainer that can help in every aspect. I have a lot of faith in him and have only heard great things. I’m excited to have him as my head trainer.”

 

Scully is also upbeat about working with another top tier talent.

 

“I’ve known Francisco (since he was an amateur). I’m looking forward to working with him. We’d crossed paths numerous times and he’s been working out at the gym I train guys out of. He’s a hard worker and I think this will be a good fit. We had a nice talk comparing philosophies and he seems on board. He has a name and a good amateur background. I am going to do my best for him and if he still has the desire to make it to the top I believe we’ll get there.”

Perez destroys Duluc, sends message to Olivares

In a matchup of undefeated junior welterweight prospects, Puerto Rican Jonathan "Fafa" Perez ( 5-0, 3 KO's ) defeated by knockout in the first round, hometown favorite, Gabriel Duluc ( 8-1, 1 KO's ) in a 6 round scheduled bout, held at the Royale Nightclub in Boston, Massachusetts. The fight was stopped at 2:50.

"Thanks to the intensity of my training I fought and felt great. My hands and legs speed were there, so I knew something really good was going on. My trainer Israel Figueroa with John Scully and Jessie Rodríguez did an amazing job. Man, I was in a 2 year layoff!!!" said an excited Perez, who ended up saying: "But the real winner here is 50 Cent's prospect Luis Olivares, who didn't fight me on July 5, he disappeared in fight week, escaping from a secure knockout, but now I know why he is called the magic man".

Perez last fight was on June, 2011 in Puerto Rico, where he defeated debutant, Francisco Soto by unanimous decision.

JAVIER FLORES RETURNS THIS SATURDAY JANUARY 26TH

  

January 24, 2013 - Puerto Rican power puncher, Javier "El Chino" Flores (8-0, 7 KOs) is returning to the ring this Saturday, January 26 at Remington Park Casino in Oklahoma City.

Standing across the ring from Flores will be Mexican, Joel "Pirata" Vargas (4-8, 4 KOs), who has been in the ring with many undefeated fighters that include Mikael Zewski (18-0, 14 KOs) and Michael Finney (9-0, 7 KOs), among others.

Flores vs. Vargas is scheduled for six rounds and in the welterweight division (147 lbs).

"We are ready to box, and at the same time to put pressure to convincingly stop Vargas," said Flores. "My trainer John Scully has worked on my strength, speed and technique, so I'm ready to put on a great show for the fans in attendance."

Flores' last fight was on October 27 in New York, where he defeated tough Mexican Alberto Herrera (8-8-1, 5 KOs) by majority decision.

As an amateur boxer, Flores compiled an impressive record of 65 knockout victories, of which 32 came by way of knockout, with only 3 defeats.

October 25, 2012 - The new acquisition of "Gary Shaw Productions", power puncher, Javier "el Chino" Flores (7-0, 7 KOs), will be in action this Saturday, October 27th on the undercard at the Turning Stone Resort and Casino in Verona, New York.  Flores will face off against California's Alberto Herrera (8-7-1, 5 KOs) in a non-televised bout scheduled for 8 rounds in the welterweight division.

"I have sacrificed myself like never before for this fight," said Flores, born and raised in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico and trains in New Haven, Connecticut.  "To beat Herrera I will need to be well prepared."

As an amateur boxer, Flores had a record of 65 victories with 38 coming by way of knockout, and only 3 defeats.

Flores, who is a southpaw, is confident in the results he has obtained with his new trainer John Scully.

Herrera has gone the distance with various undefeated prospects, and recently (June) lost in the seventh round against Thomas Dulorme (16-0, 12 KOs) when he was unwilling to come out of his corner (RTD).

Three featured bouts will be televised live on HBO BOXING AFTER DARK®beginning at 10:15 p.m. ET/PT. 

In the 10-round main-event, undefeated Puerto Rican standout, Thomas Dulorme(16-0, 12 KOs) takes on heavy-handed Argentine, Luis Carlos Abregu (33-1, 27KO's).
