‘Dappa’ Napa Backs Marston To Become WBU Europe Champion On Nov 30th

Former British and European Bantamweight Champion Ian ‘Dappa’ Napa may have retired from competitive action back in 2011, but the Hackney based battler can still be found in the gym on most days.

Ian dominated the domestic Bantamweight division throughout 2007/08, winning the Lonsdale belt outright before moving onto the European scene, where he beat Carmelo Ballone to capture the European crown in October 2008.

Losing the European title on his first defense, against Malik Bouziane, Ian went straight back into British title action, once again securing the Lonsdale belt with a majority points win over Gary Davies.
In 2010 Ian defended the newly won British crown, as well as challenging for the vacant Commonwealth title, against Jamie McDonnell.

After twelve sensational rounds once again Ian found himself without a title, due to a controversial split decision – Judge Richard James Davies scored the bout 115-114 for Ian, Judge Ian John-Lewis scored it 114-115 for McDonnell and surprisingly judge Dave Parris scored the bout 116-112 also for McDonnell.

Five months later Ian found himself challenging Stuey Hall for the newly vacated title, however Ian struggled with the weight and was forced to retire in the eighth round.

Ian moved up to Super Bantamweight, but after losing his one and only bout in the division, against Martin Ward, Ian decided to call it a day.

Even though he had retired from the ring, Ian continues to train regularly and has always been willing to pass on his hard earned knowledge, to other upcoming young boxers.

A few months ago, whilst training at the TRAD TKO Gym in Canning Town, Ian agreed to help Marianne Marston, who had been struggling to get quality sparring for an upcoming bout, Ian heard of the problems encountered by Marianne and stepped up to the plate.

Marianne won her fight, with a sixty seven second first round stoppage of Katalena Lazar, after doing so praised Ian for his exceptional sparring and help in her preparation.

When it was announced that Marianne would be fighting for the WBU Europe title on November 30th, Ian once again stepped in to be Marianne’s main sparring partner, much to Marianne’s delight.

Following their most recent sparring session, at the TRAD TKO, Ian spoke briefly about the sparring sessions.
“Yeah, Marianne’s been sparring really well, I sparred her for the fight before and the little things I told her then, she’s worked on them.

Improvements have been made there, so it’s about getting the game plan set now, besides that I think she’s ready, she’s got good power, good movement and is flowing.

I don’t know the girl Marianne is fighting, but she’s going to have her hands full.

Marianne’s got even better since last time I sparred her, she’s much more unpredictable.

From my experience, having fought at that level, it’s about applying yourself on the day, you know you can do it all in training, but it’s how you fight on the day, as long as Marianne is like she is in the gym, I don’t see any reason for her not to win the title.”

Marianne Marston versus Galina Gumliiska, for the vacant WBU Europe Super Bantamweight title, co-headlines the Dave Murphy Acourtier Events promoted WARZONE show at York Hall in Bethnal Green, London on Saturday 30th November 2013.

Tickets, priced £35 (Standard Seated) and £60 (Ringside) are available on-line at www.acourtier.com and www.tkoboxoffice.com alternatively in person from the TRAD TKO Boxing Gym in Canning Town or Ringtone Gym in Euston.

Prince And Marston Set For WBU Title Double Header In London On Nov 30th

On Saturday, 30th November 2013, a WBU Europe Championship double header will top the bill, on the Dave Murphy Acourtier Events promoted WARZONE event, which takes place at York Hall, in Bethnal Green, London.

Main bout of the night will see former WBO and IBF Inter-Continental Light Heavyweight Champion Mark Prince, against a yet to be named opponent, for the vacant WBU Europe Cruiserweight crown, whilst the co-headliner sees the inaugural WBU Europe Women’s Super Bantamweight title, being competed for by London’s Marianne ‘Golden Girl’ Marston against Bulgarian #1 ranked Galina Gumliiska.

Prince, who has a formidable record of 20 wins (16 KOs) and just the single loss, against long time WBO World Champion Dariusz Michalczewski, will be making his first challenge for Championship honors, since returning to the ring earlier this year following a fourteen year sabbatical.

Whilst an opponent has yet been announced for Prince, promoter Dave Murphy has gone on record stating that he is looking for a top fifty ranked opponent for Prince, as he intends to move the North Londoner into World title contention as quickly as possible.

This seemingly brash statement should come as no surprise, as Prince has competed at the highest level previously and judging by his sensational fourth round stoppage win, over Czech Republic’s Jindrich Velecky on October 4th, anything less would not present a challenge for the former World title challenger.

Speaking earlier, at the famous TRAD TKO Gym in London - where he was to watch co-headliner Marianne Marston sparring former British and European Bantamweight Champion Ian ‘Dappa’ Napa - an elated Prince could barely contain the excitement, of being back on the Championship trail.

“I’m really excited to be fighting for the WBU Europe Cruiserweight title, really excited.

I suppose it’s a bit surprising for people, because I’ve had just the one fight, coming back after fourteen years out and I’m fighting for a title already, but I’m more than capable to do such things, because the level of fighter I am.

I’m very different from most fighters, a lot of fighters couldn’t come back and demonstrate the power and skills that I have.

I’ve taken a year to prepare to get to this point, I’m really looking forward to doing this.”

The Co-headline bout is the aforementioned Marianne Marston versus Galina Gumliiska.

Marston, the protégé of the late, great Heavyweight Champion of the World, Smokin’ Joe Frazier, has only competed twice in the pro ranks, both times stopping her opponent in the first round.

Whilst Marston may have just fought just twice, her opponent, Galina Gumliiska, has a wealth of experience and has fought twice for the World title, as well as six further European, International and Inter-Continental Championship fights.

Whilst Gumliiska wasn’t available to talk about the upcoming fight, Marston was and she took a little time off after her previously mentioned sparring session, to talk about the upcoming fight.

“I’m really honored to be fighting for the WBU Europe title.

However, to me this fight isn’t about the title, it’s about me being a boxer, winning the title will be the cherry on top.

I am so pleased to be fighting Galina, she has been in with the best in the business and is one seriously tough cookie.

No disrespect to Gabriella (Roman) or Katalena (Lazar), they both stepped in at short notice for our fights, after injuries and pullouts by my original opponents, but I want to fight tough credible opponents.

I came into the sport late, even later than planned thanks to the prejudice and politics of the BBBofC, but I’m here now and intend to make up for lost time.

I’m really looking forward to the fight, I know it will be a tough fight, but I intend to be at the very top of my game, hopefully that means at the end of the night it will be me that gets the WBU Europe belt around my waist.”

Mark Prince, against a yet to be named opponent, for the WBU Europe Cruiserweight title and Marianne Marston versus Galina Gumliiska, for the WBU Europe Super Bantamweight title, that co-headline the Dave Murphy Acourtier Events promoted ‘WARZONE’ Xtreme Combat event, that takes place at York Hall in Bethnal Green, London on Saturday, 30th November 2013

Tickets, priced £35 (Standard Seated) and £60 (Ringside) are available on-line at www.acourtier.com and www.tkoboxoffice.com For further information call – 07960 850645, 07809 499896 or 07557 641597

WARZONE: Xtreme Combat Event - Pro Boxing, K-1 and Muay Thai - Set For Nov 30th York Hall Debut

Acourtier Events
Present
WARZONE
A Night Of Xtreme Combat Action
30th November 2013 @ York Hall, Bethnal Green, London

For Immediate Release

London - Thursday, 31st October 2013

Back in April Dave Murphy and the Acourtier Events crew made a major impact when they presented the first ever GBA sanctioned show in the UK, the all action THUNDER & LIGHTNING event at York Hall.

In October, Murphy and co went one better with their second offering, the sensational NIGHT OF CHAMPIONS, which was co-headlined by the GBC World title showdown, between Jennifer Retzke and Big Brother star Angel McKenzie, and the return of WBO and IBF Inter-Continental Champion Mark Prince.

Now the ever innovative Murphy and the Acourtier Events crew are set to raise the bar to a whole new level, with their WARZONE Xtreme Combat event, which takes place at York Hall in Bethnal Green, London on Saturday 30th November 2013.

Whilst Xtreme Combat shows are not new in mainland Europe - where mixed discipline events, featuring professional Boxing, K-1 and Muay Thai Kickboxing bouts, are becoming increasingly popular - but this type of event has yet to make inroads into the UK, until now that is.

So what can fans of the pugilistic arts expect on the 30th November?

Scintillating action packed bouts, with plenty of drama in the mix, as WARZONE features some of the most explosive fighters around, many possessing concussive knockout records, but each and every one of them a true gladiator of the modern age.

Co-headlining the pro boxing element is former WBO and IBF Inter-Continental Light Heavyweight Champion Mark Prince, who will be campaigning for the WBU Europe Cruiserweight crown.

Prince, whose record stands at 20 wins (16 by way of knockout) and just the one loss - which came when he challenged long time Champ Dariusz Michalczewski for his WBO World Light Heavyweight crown – is without doubt THE most exciting all action Cruiserweight around, bar none!

In his last fight, against Czech Republic’s Jindrich Velecky, the entire crowd at the York Hall were on their feet as Prince entered the arena, for his eagerly awaited return to the fray, where they stayed for the duration of the bout, due to the scintillating performance he displayed on way to the fourth round stoppage victory.

The other boxing co-headliner sees the hugely popular Marianne ‘Golden Girl’ Marston take a tilt at her first Championship accolade, against the highly experienced five time World title challenger and Bulgaria’s #1 ranked Galina Gumliiska for the vacant WBU Europe Super Bantamweight title.

Marston, the protégé of late, great Heavyweight Champion of the World, Smokin’ Joe Frazier, has made quite an impact since professionally debuting earlier this year.

It’s unusual for any boxer to be challenging for a European title after just two pro bouts, but when you take into account the sensational way she won those fights, maybe not so much a surprise after all.

On her debut in April, Marston stopped Hungarian #1 Gabriella Roman in one minute and forty seven seconds of the first round, mightily impressive in it’s own right, but when you take into account that the Woolwich, London based southpaw sent Roman to the canvas twice in the first minute it becomes a case of plain sensational.

Her second bout, against Romania’s Katalena Lazar was over even quicker, lasting a mere sixty seven seconds – nuff said.

Supporting the two Championship bouts are a pair of equally sensational young boxers.

The first being former England amateur captain Antonio Counihan, who in October won his debut pro fight, over the highly entertaining ‘Rockin’ Robin Deakin, by a fourth round stoppage.

The second being London based American Manny Muhammad, a former professional Basketball player, who like Prince, Marston and Counihan, is an explosive, exciting all action entertainer.

With the boxing element more or less covered - other than to say that discussions are taking place, which if successful will lead to rising superstar Iain ‘The Blessed One’ Weaver also taking part – so now it’s onto the ISKA K-1 and Muay Thai protagonists.

The K-1 headline Championship bout is yet to be announced, but word is it will be a domestic star challenging for a major title – so watch this space.

Heading up the K-1 support is Bexley’s ISKA Southern Area Heavyweight and Fight Scene Light Heavyweight Champion Mike ‘The Nightmare’ Neun, who has been described by Addicted MMA magazine’s Jack Mills as ‘The Next Big Thing’.

6’6” tall and weighing in at a solid 100kg, Neun is unbeaten in both K-1 and MMA competitions, under both ISKA and BAMMA banners.

A fearsome fighter, Neun pushes everything to the limit, as was proved when he fought Pete Brown, it was a pure bloodbath, after Neun opened up Brown with vicious kicks and elbows!

Also on the card is Sunday Brawl Champion Ed Kelly, who fights out of The Gym South London, in Mitcham.
Kelly had an exemplary amateur career before turning pro earlier this year. Since turning over Kelly has notched up two sensational wins and was crowned SundayBrawl Champion back in February.

Kelly’s gym mate Adrian Shalik will also be fighting on the WARZONE event, as will former amateur star Nicole Commerford, who makes her professional debut on the 30th November.

Further K-1 and Muay Thai fights will be announced in the coming days, as well as hopefully the news that Iain ‘The Blessed One’ Weaver will be making his third visit to York Hall this year.
