UFC 175 postmortem: Where do we go from here?

By: Chris Huntemann, Columnist

In case you already forgot, UFC 175 was last weekend, and it included two showstopping performances from two of the UFC’s premier champions: Chris Weidman and Ronda Rousey.

The career paths of those two and others may take an interesting turn following their performances. I’ll share my thoughts on where I think some of their paths will take them.

Urijah Faber Faber made a rare preliminary card appearance prior to the actual PPV, securing a rear-naked choke victory against Alex “Bruce Leroy” Caceres. Although Faber was a heavy favorite, Caceres gave “The California Kid” all he could handle. Faber was medically suspended following the show and will be sidelined until 2015. By then he might have the opportunity for a rubber match with his nemesis Dominick Cruz, assuming “The Dominator” gets past Takeya Mizugaki in September. He might also be ready for a title shot against the winner of T.J. Dillashaw/Renan Barao 2 at UFC 177 on Aug. 30.

But, would Faber be willing to fight his teammate for the belt? According to this article, only if asked by Dillashaw. I’d count on Faber being in the mix yet again for a bantamweight title shot by this time next year. If we get Cruz/Faber 3, all the better.

Matt Mitrione/Stefan Struve This fight was cancelled at the last minute when Struve passed out in the locker room. Struve is coming off a long break due to a serious heart ailment, the type of condition that makes any athlete second-guess what he or she is doing. Struve says he’s fine and that what happened isn’t related to his condition. Mitrione has already moved on and is slated to face Derrick Lewis in September. I think after getting his health in order, we’ll see Struve in the new year, maybe against someone like Gabriel Gonzaga.

Ronda Rousey has another bout under her championship belt, and it was another instance of out-and-out domination for Rousey. If there was still any doubt that she is the most dominant fighter in women’s MMA, it was thoroughly eradicated with her 16-second obliteration of Alexis Davis. Now Rousey gets some well-deserved time off, thanks to a hand injury and arthroscopic knee surgery that will keep her on the shelf until next year.

The big news in women’s MMA is not only Rousey’s domination of Davis, but also the fact that UFC signed Holly Holm, long rumored to be the next formidable challenger for Rousey. She will most likely need to win at least one fight before getting a title shot. Rousey’s rumored other challenger, Cat Zingano, makes her return against Amanda Nunes at UFC 178. Cris "Cyborg" Justino is also in the mix now that she is apparently agreeing to terms with Invicta and plans to fight at 135 pounds.

So where does this leave Rousey in the new year? I think if Zingano makes short work of Nunes (which I believe she will), she will finally get her long-awaited title shot, and we will possibly see yet another Rousey domination.

Chris Weidman: Any belief that Weidman’s two victories against Anderson Silva were a fluke was hopefully erased after his performance against Lyoto Machida. Weidman received all he could handle from “The Dragon,” but he displayed a champion’s mettle and perseverance and battled through. It is definitely Weidman’s division now. So, who will be his next challenge? I think it will be Vitor Belfort. He seems to finally be working through his drug testing-related issues and will finally receive a title shot that seemed to be a lock after he knocked out Michael Bisping, Luke Rockhold and Dan Henderson back-to-back-to-back. Will “The Phenom” be the same fighter without testosterone? I guess we’ll find out. But a battle between Belfort and Weidman will definitely be must-see-TV in the new year.

Amateur MMA Athletes Benefit as MMA Draft Continues to Gain Momentum and Expand their Resources

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (May 13, 2013)  MMADraft.com, a promotional platform for up-and-coming amateur combat sports athletes, has quickly become the go-to site for many of MMA’s rising stars.  With the ever growing talent pool, it is becoming increasingly difficult for skilled amateur MMA fighters to identify what steps they need to take to build a successful future in the sport. Not only do they have to stand out amongst their peers as elite competitors, they have to build a presence outside of the cage as well. MMA Draft offers solutions and gives amateurs in the sport an edge on the competition.

Backed by industry influencers and fighters Urijah Faber and Phil Davis, MMADraft.com gives amateurs access to valuable resources that no other organization can offer, from media opportunities to advice from the pros. MMA Draft continues to add valuable features to the site as they evolve and according to the MMA Draft team, they are just getting started!

According to Phil Davis, “We are very excited about how quickly MMA Draft has evolved and how well it has been received in the MMA Community. MMA Draft has come a long way in a short time and we continue to find new ways to educate and promote deserving amateur athletes. The newest feature on MMADraft.com is a weekly blog called ‘The Draft Board’, authored by seasoned MMA Journalist Daniel Downes (who also writes for UFC.com). ‘The Draft Board’ touches on all subjects that pertain to Amateur MMA.”

Davis went on to say, “Daniel is also one of the experts on our MMA Draft ‘Ask a Pro’ panel (another added feature). Anyone can log on to MMADraft.com and submit a question pertaining to amateur MMA under ‘Ask a Pro’ and one of our experts will address it. Maggie Krol and Rick Lee have also joined our team and will be shooting human interest pieces and amateur MMA stories for the site. A lot of exciting things are happening at MMA Draft. We have a really big announcement coming soon, so stay tuned!”

In addition to providing great resources to amateur martial artists, the MMA Draftteam actively generates publicity for their athletes through shows like ‘MMA Draft Spotlight with Trigg’, ‘The Great Debate’ Radio Show, Alchemist Radio, and many others. Registered MMA Draft athletes of all ages have the opportunity to earn their place in the spotlight. MMADraft.com Generates Publicity for Amateur Martial Artists through Shows like 'MMA Draft Spotlight with Trigg’

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (March 21, 2013)  Urijah Faber and Phil Davis recently announce the official launch of MMADraft.com, a promotional platform specifically designed to generate opportunities for up-and-coming amateur martial artists. In addition to providing a high-profile platform for amateurs to market themselves, the MMA Draft team actively generates publicity for their athletes through shows like ‘MMA Draft Spotlight with Trigg’ and ‘The Great Debate’ Radio Show, hosted by Damon Martin. Registered MMA Draft athletes of all ages have the opportunity to earn their place in the spotlight.

Every week MMA Draft features a stand out amateur athlete on their show ‘MMA Draft Spotlight’, hosted by Frank Trigg. The video interviews are featured on MMADraft.com, YouTube, and on Frank Trigg’s iPhone and Android phone App ‘Trigg MMA’. Only MMA Draft gives up-and-coming amateurs the chance to be interviewed by one of MMA’s most recognized personalities, and according to Trigg, he is very happy to do it.

“I’m very excited to be a part of MMA Draft,” stated Trigg. “It allows me to draw attention to talented amateur MMA athletes that deserve to get noticed. The show is a great way for amateurs to set themselves apart from the competition. The more interviews they do as they prepare to go pro, the better. It is a great way to get their name out there.”

Urijah Faber had this to say about Trigg’s involvement with MMA Draft, “I’ve always been a fan of Frank Trigg as a fighter, and over the years I have become a fan of his journalism and commentary as well. We are very happy to have him on the MMA Draft team.  He shares our passion for the sport and genuinely cares about the future of MMA.”

MMA Draft also has the support of well-known and respected MMA journalist and radio show host, Damon Martin. Martin has agreed to showcase standout amateur MMA Draft fighters on his radio show ‘The Great Debate’.  Martin, who interviews some of MMA’s biggest stars on the show, will include one lucky MMA Draft amateur fighter in the line-up each week. (amateur must be 18yrs or older to be chosen)

Phil Davis had this to add, “Frank Trigg and Damon Martin are well-known and respected in the industry, Frank as a fighter and commentator and Damon as a journalist and radio host. They both have the ability to pierce the periphery and grab a hold of the essence that makes each competitor special.  For amateurs, media opportunities like this are priceless.”

The MMA Draft team utilizes their many resources in the professional world of MMA to give back to their athletes. ‘Spotlight with Trigg’ and ‘The Great Debate’ are just two examples. How do MMA Draft amateurs get chosen for opportunities like this? The more photos, videos and activity that they have on their MMA Draft profile, the more likely they are to get chosen.

Amateur martial artists of all ages and skill levels are encouraged to create a profile on www.MMADraft.com.  The site is FREE to join and participating amateur athletes can upload photos and videos, document notable career achievements and more! THE ULTIMATE FIGHTER® LIVE ON FX CONTINUES WITH “WEATHER THE STORM”

TEAM FABER’S JOHN COFER vs. TEAM CRUZ’S VINC PICHEL

Friday, April 20, LIVE on FX at 10 p.m. ET/PT

The Ultimate Fighter® Live on FX continues tomorrow/Friday, live on FX at 10 p.m. ET/PT (Delayed on the West Coast) when Team Faber’s John Cofer (7-1), of Hull, Ga., takes on Team Cruz’s Vinc Pichel (7-0), of Sherman Oaks, Calif., for a spot in the quarterfinals.

With Team Faber’s Joe Proctor notching a victory over Team Cruz’s Chris Tickle last week, Faber’s squad now leads that of his bitter rival 3-2. Down 0-2 at one point, Team Faber has won three in a row.

Below is a description of the upcoming “Weather the Storm” episode:

“Cruz gives Chris Tickle an earful following his loss. After Faber comes to his defense, the coaches get into a heated exchange. With the tensions at the house taking a toll on him, Andy Ogle has an emotional breakdown during practice. Then Vinc Pichel and John Cofer face off in the sixth preliminary fight.”

Cofer and Pichel are looking to move into the quarterfinals along with previous winners James Vick, Justin Lawrence, Al Iaquinta, Michael Chiesa and Proctor.

The 13-week season will culminate with a championship fight and three-hour finale on June 1 at the Pearl Palms Concert Theater in Las Vegas. The coaches will then meet on July 7 at UFC 148, when Cruz defends his title against Faber in the rubber match of their epic rivalry.

Below are select quotes from Cofer and Pichel. Please let us know if you’d like to have the fighters answer any more questions.

JOHN COFER:
Through five weeks, it has been a season of streaks. Team Cruz won the first two, Team Faber the last three? What's the mood of your team, and how has it changed, etc?

“The mood throughout the season has been pretty good, even when we were down, we never felt like we were out. It is an individual sport but when your teammates win, it boosts moral. For the most part, I think we've done really well cohesively to stay positive.”

Do you feel pressure to keep the streak going?

“There's pressure, but it's not from wanting to keep a win streak going. There's pressure from wanting myself to move onto the next round. I also want to win to try and help my teammates get their next pick in the last two fights. So there's some pressure either way.”

What is your mood going into the fight and what do you have to do to win? Is it important just to win, or do you want to win impressively?

“I'm definitely happy to be fighting, I'm glad that my time is now. I'm confident and feel like it's my fight to win. I just have to fight, push the pace, not get desperate, be patient and if there's an opportunity to finish him with a [submission] or if I end up getting a knockout, great. If not, then I just need to continue to push that pace through the 10 minutes.”

How difficult is it to sit and watch during the weeks you weren't fighting? Is it a relief to actually be fighting?
“I wouldn't really say it was difficult to sit and watch. There's always that monkey on your back to get out there and do it yourself. I'm sure once you actually go in there and win it's actually quite a relief. I'm anticipating having that relief!”

Is there anything that's happened in the first five weeks that's surprised you?

“Not really [laugh]. I'm really enjoying my time here. It's definitely a blessing and I'm thankful to have this opportunity. That doesn't mean I don't miss home and I'm not ready to go home but at the same time I'm here to do work and I'm here for a purpose. I'm thankful not just to be here but to have this opportunity, and hopefully I'll make the best of it.”

VINC PICHEL:

Through five weeks, it has been a season of streaks. Team Cruz won the first two, Team Faber the last three? What's the mood of your team, and how has it changed, etc?

“The mood on our team hasn't really changed too much. We're definitely a little bummed that we lost the last three, but in fighting you win some and you lose some. We're not dwelling on it; we're looking ahead and focusing on the next fight. It's one fight at a time. It does bother us but we're not letting it drag us down. We're concentrating on our training and what we have to do to get the hammer back.”

Do you feel pressure to reverse the trend?

“Enormous pressure [laugh]. We had it in our minds that we were going to sweep these guys. Then they came back and won the last three fights and surprised the hell out of us. You know in the back of your head that you could lose a fight, it's always there. It actually happening though kind of 'kicks you in the pants' you could say. There is a lot of pressure on me to get the hammer back and to win a fight for us. I'm trying not to think about it and just to think about my fight that's ahead of me.”

What is your mood going into the fight and what do you have to do to win? Is it important just to win, or do you want to win impressively?

“I'm extremely focused. I feel really good. What I have to do to win is honestly just finish him, either knock him out or submit him. I'm not looking to let the judges decide my fate, I never have and I never will. I'm going to go out there and win or get knocked out trying. That's the way I see it.”

How difficult is it to sit and watch during the weeks you weren't fighting? Is it a relief to actually be fighting?
“It's very difficult to sit and watch people fight. You watch your teammates fight and you see things while they're fighting that you don't see when you're in there. That's why you have coaches, because they see what you don't. That's why they're in the corner yelling stuff at you because they see what's open. I feel the same way when I'm watching my teammates. When they win, it's great and you're winning with them. When they lose, you feel like crap because you lose with them. It feels good and it hurts at the same time.”

Is there anything that's happened in the first five weeks that's surprised you?

“What I have been surprised about is the pranks. There hasn't been that many… yet. Just little stuff like that. It has been a great experience and I can't wait to add a win to that.”

THE ULTIMATE FIGHTER LIVE ON FX CONTINUES WITH “DOGS WITH NO BARK”

TEAM FABER’S JOE PROCTOR vs. TEAM CRUZ’S CHRIS TICKLE

Friday, April 13, LIVE on FX at 10 p.m. ET/PT

The Ultimate Fighter Live on FX continues this Friday, live on FX at 10 p.m. ET/PT (Delayed on the West Coast) when Team Faber’s Joe Proctor (8-1), of Pembroke, Mass., takes on Team Cruz’s Chris Tickle (8-4), of Bloomington, Ill., for a spot in the quarterfinals.

With Team Faber’s Michael Chiesa notching a victory over Team Cruz’s Jeremy Larsen last week, the two coaches and bitter rivals’ squads are tied at two wins apiece.

Below is a description of the upcoming “Dogs With No Bark” episode:

“Tempers flare between Mike Rio and Justin Lawrence during sparring. Both teams enjoy a relaxing Easter Sunday. Then, house loudmouth Chris Tickle faces tough guy Joe Proctor in the fifth preliminary fight."

Proctor and Tickle are looking to move into the quarterfinals along with previous winners James Vick, Justin Lawrence, Al Iaquinta and Chiesa.

The 13-week season will culminate with a championship fight and three-hour finale on June 1. The coaches will then meet on July 7 when Cruz defends his title against Faber in the rubber match of their epic rivalry.

Below are select quotes from Proctor and Tickle.
JOE PROCTOR:

Q: How did it feel when your name was called on to fight Friday?

A: When my name was called on Friday I was excited. I’ve been waiting four or five weeks to get in there and show everybody what I’ve been training for.

Q: What have you been doing since then to prepare for the fight?

A: Since my name was called, I’ve just been taking it light by hitting a lot of mitts, working my strength, and critiquing everything for a good game plan.

Q: How has the support of the Team Faber coaching staff been?

A: The Team Faber coaching staff is unbelievable. They’re behind me a hundred percent and constantly motivating me and constantly pushing me. They’ve got me ready for this fight and I can’t wait for it.

Q: What do you think your strength is going into this fight?

A: I think my strength going into this fight is everything. I’m well rounded. If it goes to the ground I’m good, and I’m more than happy to stand up too. I can finish anyway I feel like.

Q: How’s life in the house?

A: Life in the house is hectic. As much as I love being here and having this great opportunity, I really can’t wait to get back home and see all my friends and my family.

Q: What’s the first thing you’re going to do when you get home?

A: The first thing I’m going to do when I leave the show is hug my girlfriend.

CHRIS TICKLE

Q: How is everything going so far?

A: Training’s going great. Dom’s been busting our butts pretty hard every day. I’m happy and in good shape so I’m ready to fight.

Q: How did it feel when your name was called on to fight Friday?

A: I was happy when Faber called me out. I get to shut his mouth and whoop some ass, so I’m ready to go.

Q: What do you think about your opponent Joe Proctor?

A: Proctor is a tough guy. I think he’s the best fighter on Team Faber. He’s well rounded and we’ll see what he can do.

Q: Do you think you’ve improved since joining the show?

A: Definitely, my cardio is up and I’ve learned a lot-- I’m the best fighter I’ve ever been.

Q: What’s the first thing you’re going to do when you get home?

A: I’m going to go home and cuddle with my fiancé.
