Paul Williams Joins Team Fight to Walk!

New York, NY (December 7, 2014) – Three time world champion Paul “The Punisher” Williams is the newest member of Team Fight to Walk.

 

A fixture on the pound for pound lists and a fan favorite, Williams had an outstanding 41-2 record with 27 wins by knockout. Williams, a two-division titlist, became paralyzed from the waist down following a motorcycle accident in May 2012. Even after becoming a paraplegic from the accident, Williams maintained his signature smile and a great attitude.

 

Recently, Williams connected with Team Fight to Walk co-founder Boyd Melson in New York City, where he helped Williams find speaking engagements. During their time together, Melson took Williams to RutgersUniversity to meet Dr. Wise Young. He showed Williams patients treated during clinical trials in China. Williams saw the patients walking following a surgical procedure that enabled their axons to regenerate. Young is planning to conduct the same trials next year in the United States. Amazed by what he saw, Williams immediately joined Team Fight to Walk.

 

“Being a member of Team Fight to Walk is an incredible feeling,” said Williams. “Regardless of how I felt, people were telling me that I was never going to walk again but after meeting Boyd and Dr. Wise Young, you can’t tell me anything! I saw people with Spinal Cord Injuries walking again and their cords regrowing. It’s amazing how God works because he brought all of us together and I’m confident as ever that I’ll walk again.”

 

Melson is also overjoyed about having Williams on board and knew it was only a matter of time until the two connected.

Melson to Speak at United States Military Academy!

New York, NY (October 26, 2014) – Junior middleweight boxer, West Point grad and charitable figure Captain Boyd “Rainmaker” Melson has been invited to speak at a leadership development series at the United States Military Academy at West Point Monday, October 27.

 

For the leadership development, Melson will host a one hour interactive discussion with a group of approximately 40 high ranking cadets that excel academically and have peer leadership positions.

 

Melson graduated from the USMA at West Point in 2003 with a degree in psychology and put on a pair of boxing gloves for the first time as a plebe (freshman) for a required course. After joining West Point’s boxing team and excelling in the squared circle on an international level, he was selected as an alternate for the 2008 United States Olympic Boxing Team, but withdrew due to an injury. During his senior year at West Point he met Christan Zaccagnino, who became paralyzed from the waist down after a diving accident when she was 10. The two quickly became close and Melson’s ultimate goal in life is to see her walk again.

 

With Zaccagnino as his inspiration, Melson turned pro in 2010 and has donated 100% of his fight purses to Teamfighttowalk.com and Justadollarplease.org to help find a cure for Chronic Spinal Cord Injuries. To further assist with fundraising efforts, Melson and Zaccagnino hosted the “Fighting for the Cure” gala the last two years, raising a significant amount of money in the process.

Melson to battle Thompson in Rematch August 14!

New York, NY (July 18, 2013) – Junior middleweight and charitable figure Captain Boyd “Rainmaker” Melson of New York City gets a crack at redemption when he faces Brooklyn, NY's Jason Thompson in an eight round featured boutWednesday, August 14 at BB King Blues Club in New York City.

 

On October 20, 2012, Melson and Thompson fought in the first bout ever at the brand new Barclays Center. In the opening round, Melson suffered a flash knockdown but rebounded well and mostly outboxed his foe. Most ringsiders believed Melson would walk away with a decision, but all three judges scored the bout 56-56 even.

 

Since their first bout, each fought once, with Melson, 11-1-1 (4 KO’s), dominating veteran Edgar Perez and Thompson, 5-6-3 (4 KO’s), fighting to a draw against highly regarded Frank Galarza. With the battle of the boroughs set for round two, Melson doesn’t want there to be any questions as to who the victor is this time around.

 

“Regardless of how I feel I performed or what I and others believe the outcome of the first fight should have been, it was ruled a draw” said Melson, who helped raised more than $70,000 profit during Team Fight to Walk’s first fundraiser May 16 at BB King. “He’s a tough fighter and has faced good opposition but he’s been stopped in a few of his losses. Boyd Melson to receive Good Guy Award from Hall of Fame!

 

New York, NY (December 1, 2012) – Captain Boyd “Rainmaker” Melson will receive the Dick Steinberg Good Guy award from the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame on Sunday, April 21, 2013.

 

Recognized as boxing’s ultimate humanitarian, Melson’s donated every penny of all 12 fight purses. With 11 of them going to Justadollarplease.org to assist with funding for a pending trial that could potentially cure chronic Spinal Cord Injuries, Melson donated one of his fight purses to his childhood friend to help their family out after hearing about his friend's son battling brain cancer. In 2011, Melson, who is 10-1-1 with 4 knockouts, created Team Fight to Walk. The team, which helps support the cause either through donations, networking or wearing Team Fight to Walk shirts, has more than 15 fighters on board.

 

His admirable efforts have been covered by Sports Illustrated, ESPN, Yahoo, The Military Times and NY1 amongst others. Following his last bout, boxing legend Oscar De La Hoya and Golden Boy Promotions, moved by Melson’s cause, donated to Justadollarplease.org.

Melson to meet Leiva September 22 in Queens!

 

New York, NY (August 29, 2012) – Captain Boyd “Rainmaker” Melson of New York City is set to challenge cement-fisted Cuban Yolexcy Leiva Saturday, September 22 at the first ever boxing card at World Casino in Queens, NY.

 

Known for his humanitarianism and large fan base, Melson, 9-1 (4 KO’s), scored a lackluster decision victory over Khalik Memminger on August 2. Leading up to that bout, Melson was on antibiotics for an infection, which kept him out of the gym and made cutting weight a daunting task. The day before weighing-in, he was 13 pounds over the limit but he miraculously made weight. However, he was weak and lacking energy on fight night, ultimately leaving him extremely dissatisfied with his performance.

 

“The fight against Memminger was my worst performance as a pro and I was more upset about it than most of the fans,” stated Melson. “Regardless, I can’t ever look like that again and expect to win.”

 

Born in Cuba and based in Brooklyn, NY, Leiva’s no stranger to tough fights, sharing the squared circle with undefeated opponents on four occasions. With a deceptive 5-4 professional ledger, Leiva has four wins by knockout, most notably demolishing hometown favorite Benny Costantino in March. On August 18, he dropped a split decision to undefeated Thomas LaManna following a six round slugfest.

 

“I know this guy is a lot tougher than my last opponent and I must be 100 times better than I was last time out,” said Melson, who donates his entire fight purse to Justadollarplease.org to help fund a trial to help cure Spinal Cord Injuries. “That fight is no longer a part of my consciousness as I only care right now about creating a new and more proud memory September 22. Captain Melson to face Memminger August 2!

 

New York, NY (July 23, 2012) – West Point graduate Captain Boyd “Rainmaker” Melson will challenge veteran Khalik Memminger in a six round junior middleweight contest Thursday, August 2 at the Roseland Ballroom in the heart of New York City.

 

One of the Empire State’s biggest ticket sellers, Melson had to withdraw from a June 14 bout after suffering an eye injury and hasn’t entered the squared circle since his unforgettable eight round war with Delen Parsley in March. Melson, 8-1 (4 KO’s), also built a strong rapport with fans and members of the media since he’s donated all of his fight purses in addition to partaking in exciting bouts.

 

With a deceptive professional ledger of 6-8-3 (3 KO’s), the tough Texan was in a number of controversial bouts, dropping a split and majority decision in addition to the three draws. His biggest victory to date came back in 2007 when he upset hometown favorite Victor Montemayor. Memminger’s fighting for just the second time outside of the Lone Star State and is coming off of a decision victory against Fabian Cancino in July 2011.

Injury-Free Melson to fight on August 2!

 

New York, NY (July 11, 2012) – Captain Boyd “Rainmaker” Melson will make his highly-anticipated return to the squared circle in a six round junior middleweight bout Thursday, August 2 at New York City’s Roseland Ballroom against an opponent to be named.

 

Melson, 8-1 (4 KO’s), was scheduled to face Enrique Gallegos June 14 but withdrew after fracturing his eye socket during a sparring session. Thankfully, the New York City native recovered quickly and is eager to get back in the ring.

 

“I’m really looking forward to this fight,” said Melson, who co-founded Team Fight to Walk along with his best friend Christan Zaccagnino. “A lot of people were telling me how entertaining my last match was and how excited they are to see me fight again.
