ROMAN MORALES VICTORIOUS AT CHUMASH CASINO

Results from Santa Ynez, California

SANTA YNEZ, CA (June 14, 2013) - Tonight Gary Shaw Productions presented another great night of boxing at the Chumash Casino Resort.  In the main event, Roman Morales (17-0, 10 KOs) defeated Robert Castaneda (20-4-1, 15 KOs) by way of unanimous decision to retain his "Central Coast Championship".

In the early rounds Morales was using his superior boxing skills to get in position to land his shots.  Castaneda was confused as Morales was switching stances throughout the fight.  Morales dropped Castaneda in round five and everything was going his way.  Things changed in round seven when Morales got caught with a left hook to the head. Morales gained his composure, but Castaneda gained confidence going into the final rounds.   But Morales got back in control and finished off the fight landing hard blows to the head and body.   Scorecards read 97-91 across the board for Morales.

"I felt I could have finished the fight in the early rounds but I couldn't get him out of there," said Morales. "Castaneda fought very tough and I take my hat off to him for continuing to fight after I dropped him.  I got caught with a punch I didn't see coming but I got back on my feet and finished the fight throwing hard punches.   This was a great learning experience and I'll be back in the gym to work on my craft.  I want to thank Gary Shaw for giving me another opportunity to showcase my skills.  I'll be ready when they call my name."

Undercard Results
(6-round Featherweight bout)  - Serrano used his height and reach to counter the attack of Batres in the early rounds.  Although Batres landed an overhand right that dropped Ruffino Serrano in the first round, Serrano controlled the action for the remainder of the bout until the referee stopped the bout at the 2:37 of round four.  Serrano recorded his first knockout of his career.  Ruffino Serrano (13-5, 1 KO) defeats Pablo Batres (4-8-1)
(8-round Featherweight bout) - Edwin Solis and Gabriel Tolmajyan engaged in a classic southpaw vs. conventional matchup.  Tolmajyan was countering the attack of an aggressive Solis.  Tolmajyan was landing pot shots as Solis was doing his best to land an overhand right.  Both fighters entered the final rounds neck and neck and it seemed that Tolmajyan was winning the bout, but the judges saw it different as the bout was declared a majority draw.  Scorecards read 76-76 twice and for 77-75 Tolmajyan.  Gabriel Tolmajyan (13-3-2, 3 KOs) majority draw vs. Edwin Solis (5-2-2, 3 KOs)

(4-Round Light Middleweight bout) - In an all out brawl, Eric Prado and Julian Cruz let their hands go for four hard fought rounds.  There weren't many jabs thrown in this fight as both fighters were trying to land power shots throughout the bout.  Cruz was the more aggressive fighters and seemed to be landed the more damaging shots.  Prado had his moments going to the body, but it was Cruz who came up on top winning a unanimous decision.  Scorecards read 39-37 across the board in favor of Cruz. Julian Cruz (2-2) defeats Eric Prado (2-4-1)

(6-Round Light Heavyweight bout) - Ilsthat Khusnulgatin used his superior boxing skills to dominate a game Arenio Terrazas.  Khusnulgatin had a distinctive height and reach advanced and he used it to perfection as he battered Terrazaas around the ring for four rounds.   Khusnulgatin wins by TKO after Terrazas could not return for the fifth round. Ilsthat Khusnulgatin (11-0, 6 KOs) defeats Arsenio Terrazas (9-6, 8 KOs)

(4-Round Lightweight bout) -  - In a battle of aggressive lightweights, Daniel Franco and Manuel Romero went toe to toe for three competitive rounds but it was Franco who landed the cleaner shots.  In the fourth round Franco landed a flush left uppercut that sent a tired Romero to the canvas and the referee stopped the bout at the 44 mark of round four.  Franco wins by knockout.  Daniel Franco (5-0-2, 3 KOs) defeats Manuel Romero (0-2)

SANTA YNEZ, Calif. (Sept. 22, 2012) - Unbeaten world-ranked super bantamweight Jonathan Romero (22-0, 12 KOs), of Cali, Colombia, dominated Efrain Esquivias Jr. (16-2, 9 KOs), of Gardena, Calif., en route to a near-shutout 12-round decision in the main event Friday on ShoBox: The New Generation live on SHOWTIME®.

Romero, in command from the outset, was victorious in an elimination fight for the No. 2 ranking in the IBF, by the scores of 120-107 and 119-108 twice. There were no knockdowns. Romero entered the ring ranked fifth in the IBF and WBO and ninth in the WBA.

In a collision of undefeated super bantamweights in the co-feature at Chumash Casino Resort,Roman Morales (13-0, 6 KOs), of San Ardo, Calif., registered a hard-fought eight-round unanimous decision over previously undefeated Jonathan Arellano (13-1-1, 3 KOs), of Ontario, Calif.

The up-and-coming Morales won by the scores of 78-72 twice and 77-73 in a scrap in which both boxers went down. Morales hit the deck from a left hook to the head in the third, Arellano from a left hook to the body in the seventh.

"Tonight we saw two good wins by fighters at different stages in their careers in the same weight class,'' ShoBox expert analyst Steve Farhood said afterward. "One was world-class, the other was a world class prospect.''

Farhood liked what he saw in the 5-foot-9, 25-year-old Romero, who was making his third start in a row in the United States, and fourth overall.

"Romero was impressive in several ways,'' Farhood said. "It was predictable that he'd be effective when he was on the move but for large portions of the fight he also fought Esquivias at his own game on the inside. To me the most important thing of all was Romero's energy level from round one to round 12.''

Morales won the toughest fight of his career to date. What surprised Farhood was the way he accomplished it.

"Morales was fighting a style a bit different than I expected,'' he said. "Once he hurt Arellano, he turned boxer, used the ring and picked his spots very effectively. He also got off the floor for the first time in his career and showed the ability to overcome adversity, something all prospects eventually have to do.''

Romero was pleased with his performance and is hopeful a world title shot is forthcoming.

"I felt very good every single round,'' he said. "I prepared hard for this fight. I sparred with guys that came forward all the time. I knew what he was coming to do because I'd seen him fight. I'm ready to become world champion. But to be a world champion I have to go through great fighters like Esquivias to get to my goal.''

The aggressive-minded, five-foot-four Esquivias spotted the winner five inches in height, but he never stopped pressing the issue.  Esquivias even started quickly, which isn't the norm for him. But it did no good against the classy Romero.

"He fought his fight and he fought well,'' said Esquivias, who was docked a point after the seventh for a blatant late hit. "He didn't want to brawl, but he fought smart. He boxed and I couldn't catch him. There's really not much I could have done differently. I was little tired toward the end; it was my first 12-rounder. But I was still throwing punches at the end. He gave me problems with his movement. I wanted to make it an exciting fight for the crowd. Too bad he didn't want to stand and trade more."

The 23-year-old Morales, making his fifth start this year and seventh at Chumash, was pleased with his performance despite getting knocked down.

"I felt I did well,'' he said, "I was just trying to listen to my corner. They were telling me to use my jab a lot and that's what I kept trying to do. They were also telling me to work the body more. I should have done that from the beginning.''

So what was it like getting floored for the first time in your career? "It was a new experience, something I never had felt before,'' Morales said. "It's part of boxing, but I said to myself that I have to keep coming forward and show some heart and respect for the game. It was a good fight and he's a good boxer."

Arellano felt the scoring was a tad out of line. "I feel that it was a little high in his favor,'' he said. "I feel I won more rounds than they gave me. It was a good fight though. I don't take anything away from the kid. I thought I had him out when I dropped him. I was ready to jump on him but for some reason the ref kept me from going right after him and gave him more time. Then he hung in and made it through the round.''

Barry Tompkins called the action from ringside alongside Farhood. The executive producer ofShoBox is Gordon Hall with Richard Gaughan producing and Rick Phillips directing.

The Gary Shaw Productions doubleheader will re-air this week as follows:

What the fighters said Thursday:

JONATHAN ROMERO

“It’s exciting to be back on SHOWTIME and I just love the attention and exposure it brings to me.

“I expect Esquivias to come forward from the start and try and get right in my face, so I am prepared to do whatever it takes. Whether it means I have to box and move around or slug in the middle of the ring, I’m ready. I hurt my left thumb in my last fight, but it is 100 percent now.

“I feel I am mentally stronger than when I fought Chris Avalos (Romero won a split decision last Dec. 2 on ShoBox), and look to put on a better show this time.

“Esquivias is a good fighter. I’ve watched a lot of tape and know he is very aggressive and will be coming to fight his fight. But his style is good for me and I will adjust to whatever he is trying to do.

“This is an important fight with a top ranking on the line. I hope if I win I can fight for the world title in my next fight. I know I feel I’m ready.’’

EFRAIN ESQUIVIAS

“This fight is for No. 2 in the IBF, so it is very important. I’m looking to win, make a good impression and fight for the title.

“I’ve seen Romero’s fights. I’m not sure he likes to get pressured. But for sure I’m going to make him go backwards.

“I’ve trained hard and have worked especially hard getting off to a fast start. I know I’m a slow starter. I’m expecting to start fast and set a good pace. I like to be a crowd-pleaser and entertain the fans.

“Even though I thought I won my fight against Chris Avalos (he lost a majority decision last June 23), I didn’t get discouraged when the decision didn’t go my way. In fact, it made me become more motivated and work even harder.

“I plan to bring it against Romero. That’s my style. I think I showed in my last fight (against Avalos) that I belonged. Now I need to show that I can win.’’

ROMAN MORALES

“I’ve done it twice so I feel much more comfortable going eight rounds. I think I did a good job in my last fight on ShoBox (he won a unanimous decision over the Roger Mayweather-trainedAlexis Santiago) and listened to my corner OK. When I needed to get my second wind, I did and kept pushing forward.

“I think this is the toughest fight I’ve had. I know Arellano is quick and moves a lot and is going to box. I just have to be smart, keep my hands up and try and cut him off. If I get him against the ropes, I’ll go to the body. But I think jabbing a lot more is the most important key for me heading into the fight.

“I just hope to win so that when I get a few more fights and get some more experience, I’ll be ready for a 10-round fight against a top-10 guy fight. I’ve been winning decisions, but that is good. I just want to win. There is no pressure to try for a knockout. If it comes, it comes …

“I’ve had some good sparring with Nonito Donaire. I think we’ve helped each other.’’

JONATHAN ARELLANO

“This is my first fight on ShoBox but I feel I’ve been preparing for it since I was a kid. So, naturally, I am very excited but at the same time I’m not overwhelmed. I’ve always felt that if I worked hard these kind of opportunities would come.

“This is going to be a great fight. I’m looking forward to fighting someone who is really going to try and push me. I feel I I have good movement and speed, but my trainer, Henry Ramirez, has been trying to get more to stay in the pocket and throw more.

“I work very hard. I’m looking at this great opportunity for me to prove myself.’’
