Marston Suspends Title Fight Camp - For Charity Project, To Aid Ebola Sufferers in Africa

This coming Friday professional boxer Marianne Marston will be taking a day off from the training camp for her upcoming 25th October title fight, in order to take part in a project by Philanthropic artist Clare Newton for the Street Child Charity, that will raise much needed funds for Children in Sierra Leone and Liberia who are suffering due to the Ebola epidemic.

Clare previously photographed Marianne as part of her record breaking ‘Jump4London’ photographic project to celebrate the then impending London 2012 Olympics.

The Jump4London entered the record books as the biggest photo in the world following the installation of the largest, over a kilometer in length, composite photograph exhibition, consisting of 81,663 photographs, that was unveiled at the ExCel Arena on 1st June 2012.

Marianne clearly had an impact on Clare, as it was she that the Hackney based artist visualized as the Goddess Of Spring for her latest project, a giant montage, around fifty feet in height, which will feature Marianne and children from the Sarah Bonnell School in Stratford.

The giant image will then be auctioned at a Charity Gala event in November and the monies raised will provide the Street Child Charity with much need funding that will help children in Sierra Leone and Liberia who are suffering due to the outbreak of Ebola in those countries.

Following a training session, under the watchful eyes of her coach Brian O’Shaughnessy, at the TRAD TKO Gym in Canning Town, Marianne spoke of the upcoming photographic project she is to feature in.

“When I first got the call from Clare I was more than a bit hesitant, I mean I’m in the final weeks of my training camp for my title fight on October 25th, but after she explained that this was for the Street Children charity I jumped at the opportunity.

Hopefully this project will raise a large amount of money for the Street Child Charity, It’s a truly worthwhile charity that does wonderful work around the World helping children in need.

Children are the future, if there is any way we can help prevent suffering and unnecessary early mortality of young children we, all of us, should do something to help, so I am.

Holding a BSc (Hon) in Micro Biology I am aware of the levels of research, as well as the funding levels that are required to undertake the necessary research into the Ebola virus.

Companies like America’s GeoVax Laboratories are already working on two vaccines, but this research will take a couple of years at least and unless there is enough funding even longer.

GeoVax are developing a vaccine against the ZEBOV strain of Ebola, which is responsible for the current outbreak, as well as another is being developed as a future routine immunisation to protect against the three known fatal strains of Ebola.

Hopefully Clare’s latest project will go some way to helping the Street Child Charity as well as raise awareness of the need to make enough funding available to companies like GeoVax.”

ABOUT STREET CHILD

Street Child is a UK charity, established in 2008, that aims to create educational opportunity for some of the most vulnerable children in West Africa.

Starting in Sierra Leone, then the poorest country in the world, Street Child have supported over 20,000 urban and rural children to access a quality education.

Street Child’s principal focus is upon empowering children by giving them the chance to go to school and giving their families the wherewithal to keep them there.

There have already been thousands of cases of Ebola in Sierra Leone and Liberia, the two principal nations in which we work.

The governments of both nations have declared a State of National Emergency and are working towards containing the spread the disease within what is already a low capacity and culturally complex environment; their efforts are increasingly in desperate need of support.

Street Child’s actions have two key strands:

1. Humanitarian Response

Street Child are supporting the day-to-day, essential human needs of individuals and households whose lives and livelihoods have been terribly affected: either by Ebola itself; or by the effect of dramatic quarantine and other anti-Ebola measures and consequences. Typical support is through provisions as basic as dry rations and water.

The help that government and other international organisations and charities are providing is simply not enough to help all those that need it. The additional help Street Child provides is a vital lifeline for those receiving it.

2. Raising Awareness

Ebola is entering and progressing in vulnerable communities through lack of information and non-acceptance of the basic facts about the virus and how to protect oneself from it. There is an urgent need for these vital messages to be spread.

In Sierra Leone, Street Child has a unique national presence, with active teams in nearly every major town as well as in many of the most remote parts of the country.

This broad network gives Street Child the opportunity to reach, with the vital messages needed, many disparate high risk communities.

In Liberia, Street Child presence in West Point, one of the most affected parts of the capital, and in other parts of Monrovia, also provides a real opportunity to support the national awareness-raising effort.

As well as key information and advice on basic hygiene practices, Street Child is providing buckets, soap and chlorine to actually enable communities to take positive steps to increase hygiene and reduce prospects for the spread of the virus in their area.

Whilst the Street Child ongoing efforts are already helping to raise awareness in vulnerable areas, there is vital need across the board for this activity not to just to continue but to be scaled urgently; Street Child believe this is one of the keys to containing the spread of Ebola.

Unbeaten prospect Toka Kahn-Clary Leaves path of destruction in wake

PROVIDENCE (July 16, 2013) - In only one year fighting as a professional, unbeaten Providence super featherweight prospect Toka "T Nice" Kahn-Clary's (6-0, 5 KOs), has left a patch of destruction in his wake, crisscrossing the country on his journey.

Last Friday night in his first scheduled six-round bout, the 21-year-old native of Liberia annihilated newly crowned Texas State lightweight champion Pedro Pablo Torres (7-6-2, 5 KOs), dropping him three times en route to another impressive victory by second-round technical knockout, on the non-televised portion of the Top Rank-promoted ESPN Friday Night Fights card at Texas Station Casino in Las Vegas.

In seven pro fights, including a "no contest" due to a cut he suffered, Kahn-Clary has dropped his opponents a total of 16 times, peaked by six knockdowns in his last two fights.

"Good conditioning is part of it," he spoke about his increased power, "but (head trainer) Peter (Manfredo, Sr.) has worked hard with me on sitting on my punches. You don't want your opponent walking through your punches, so you need to punch effectively to keep him back.  I didn't think I'd knock this guy (Torres) out but, when I touched him in the first round, I knew I could take him out and that's what I did in the second.

"I feel like I'm improving.  I get good sparring at Manfredo's Gym and also with Luis Rosa in New Haven.  I have to thank him and his family for being so helpful. Making weight is never a problem for me.  I'm always on weight because I think it's my responsibility as a professional and not making weight would embarrass me and my coach.  I've had a lot of fights and that's good, but I'd fight every week if I could.  I want my name to be recognized and the only way to do that is to fight often in different places and keep winning impressively.  I want to be recognized as a top fighter for me, my trainer and family."

Torres had been stopped only once in 14 previous fights and Kahn-Clary's promoter, Top Rank, matched Torres against Kahn-Clary to give Toka rounds. "They were as surprised as anybody that Toka stopped him so early because they thought the fight would go six rounds," Manfredo explained.  "We're going to need rounds (Kahn-Clary has fought only 14 rounds as a pro) as he faces tougher opponents.  He's only gone four rounds once and that was after waiting 7 ½ hours in the dressing room in a swing bout.

"Toka hit this kid so solid with a shot in the second round that I was surprised he go up to continue.  Toka then jumped on him right away and ended it.  He's an accurate puncher with good speed who has good weight distribution. He's really adjusted to the professional style, too.  He stopped some guys in the amateurs but that's all about scoring points.  Now, he's hitting guys on the chin with smaller gloves.  Toka's been working on keeping his feet under him.  He's so quick and accurate that all he has to do is let his hands go.  He's been throwing harder combinations in his past few fights and everything's been set-up by his jab."

Kahn-Clary, who captured a gold medal at the 2010 U.S. National Golden Gloves Tournament, fights out of the new Manfredo Boxing Sports Fitness gym in Narragansett, Rhode Island.

2008 U.S. Olympian Demetrius Andrade Outclasses Alexis Hlores in Two Rounds

2012 Fight 2 Educate

Results from Manchester, New Hampshire
MANCHESTER, N.H. (September 20, 2012) - World-ranked junior middleweight Demetrius "Boo Boo" Andrade (18-0, 13 KOs) displayed his entire arsenal tonight, stopping Alexis "Hurricane" Hloris (16-4-2, 12 KOs) in the second round, headlining the11th annual Fight To Educate Pro-Am card at Verizon Wireless Center in Manchester, New Hampshire.

The 24-year-old Andrade, a 2008 U.S. Olympian, dropped Fernandez early in the second round with a straight left and then finished the show with a right hook. Fernandez beat the count but the referee halted the action as the second round ended.

"I wouldn't say I was rusty, just cautious in the first round, feeling him out to see what he had," Andrade said after the fight. "I established my jab. I came out in the second round knowing he had trouble with my jab and left. I put some power and speed behind my punches. I showcased it (his entire arsenal); it looked good and sealed the deal.

"I want (Sergie) Dzinziruk (former WBO champion, 37-1, 27 KOs). His only loss was to the best, Sergio Martinez, and he just had a draw (Jonathan Gonzalez). His name would look good on my resume."

Andrade, fighting out of Providence (RI), is co-promoted by Joe DeGuardia's Star Boxing and Banner Promotions. The slick southpaw is ranked No. 4 by the International Boxing Federation (IBF) and No. 5 by the World Boxing Organization (WBO), as well as No. 10 by the World Boxing Council (WBC) and No. 15 by the World Boxing Association (WBA).

Undefeated Vermont welterweight Chris Gilbert improved to 5-0 (4 KOs) with a win over Antonio Chaves Fernandez. Gilbert dropped Fernandez midway through the opening round, trapped Fernandez on the ropes in the fourth and ended the fight by way of technical knockout with a powerful right uppercut.

Fight To Educate, presented this year in part by Absolute Broadcasting WGAM, The Game, is a unique charity event that combines a love of sports with the vision of assisting children and seniors in need, who with fundraisers like this could be 'down for the count.' During the past 10 years, Fight To Educate has raised more than $500,000 in donations benefitting local New Hampshire non-profit organizations.

Proceeds from the 11th annual Fight To Educate will benefit SEE Science Center (www.see-sciencecenter.org), The Bobby Stephens Fund for Education (www.stepheneducationfund.com), and New Horizons for New Hampshire.
