A Milwaukee native now making his home in Las Vegas, Luis Arias (5-0, 3 KO's) has been improving with every fight since turning pro last November.  In May, the 23-year-old scored the biggest win of his career when he scored a decision win over highly regarded DonYil Livingston.  On Friday, Arias will test his skills against Philadelphia's Lateef Mundy (10-6, 4 KO's) in a six-round super middleweight match-up.

27-year-old Lanell Bellows (4-0-1, 4 KO's) found professional boxing later in life than most boxers, but he's making up for lost time with a fast-paced style that has seen him earn all of his wins by knockout.  This week, he hopes to thrill his hometown fans once again in a four-round light heavyweight fight against La Paz, Mexico power puncher Carlos Gaytan (3-1-1, 3 KO's).

Moving to Las Vegas to chase his boxing dreams, Romania's Ronald Gavril (4-0, 3 KO's) has disappointed no one thus far.  Undefeated in four fights with three knockouts, the 27-year-old super middleweight clashes with unbeaten New Orleans native Jas Phipps (4-0, 1 KO's) in a six-round bout on Friday night.

Former National Amateur Champion Chris Pearson (10-0, 7 KO's) has gotten off to a fast start as a professional, ending seven of his 10 fights before the final bell.  At just 22 years of age, the Trotwood, Ohio native is aiming to extend his winning streak to 11 when he battles New Mexico's Arturo "El Toro" Crespin (10-2-1, 4 KO's), who is unbeaten in his last five fights, in  a six-round middleweight clash.

In 2003, Chicago-born Andrew Tabiti moved with his family to Las Vegas where he became a stellar amateur boxer who competed in the National Golden Gloves and just missed making the 2012 United States Olympic team.  Now a member of the Mayweather Promotions roster, Tabiti, a former 270-pound football lineman in high school, will make his professional boxing debut this Friday at cruiserweight against Scatal, Washington's Andrew Howk (0-1) in a four round battle.

In other undercard bouts, Augusta, Georgia's Justin DeLoach (3-0, 2 KO's) faces Kelvin Medley of Chicago (1-0) in a four-round junior middleweight fight and North Carolina's Willie Jones (1-0, 1 KO) faces Las Vegas' Douglas Rosales who will be making his pro debut in the four-round welterweight match-up.

In the "MAY DAY Live: Countdown to Mayweather vs. Guerrero" main event, undefeated Las Vegas light heavyweight Badou Jack (13-0, 9 KO's) will put his unblemished record on the line against knockout artist Michael Gbenga (13-7, 13 KO's) of Silver Springs, Maryland by way of Accra, Ghana in an eight-round bout.  Plus, time permitting, a six round matchup between rising super middleweight star Luis Arias (4-0, 3 KO's) of Las Vegas will go toe-to-toe Palmdale, California's DonYil Livingston (8-2-1, 4 KO's) will also be featured.

A member of the 2008 Gambian Olympic team, Badou "The Ripper" Jack now fights out of Las Vegas, where he has made a strong impression in the fight capital of the world as an exciting prospect with championship potential.  Unbeaten in his two fights thus far in 2013, the 29-year-old Jack is eager to shine in his adopted hometown this Saturday.

Thirty-three-year-old Michael "The Amazing" Gbenga rallied from a rocky start to his career to win nine of his last 11 bouts and, like all of his previous contests, each of those victories ended by way of knockout.  Excited for his Las Vegas debut this weekend, Gbenga's intention is clear when he faces Jack...he's looking for the knockout.

One of Mayweather Promotions' most promising up and coming prospect, Milwaukee native
Luis Arias has gotten off to a fast start in his professional career, winning all four of his fights since making his pro debut in November of 2012.  The 22-year-old former amateur standout has every intention of making it five in a row when he steps into the MGM Grand Garden Arena ring against Livingston.

A native of Tulsa now making his home in Palmdale, California, 28-year-old DonYil Livingston is looking to get back on track after tough losses to Elie Augustama and Paul Mendez.  Prior to those defeats, the talented Livingston was on the fast track to the top, and after a hard training camp, he's revving up to resume his quest for a world title.

In other undercard bouts, Las Vegas' Ronald Gavril (3-0) risks his unbeaten professional record in a super middleweight four round fight against Phoenix' Roberto Yong (5-6-2, 4 KO's), and opening the event in a four-round super middleweight bout will be Las Vegas' Lanell Bellows  (3-0) facing Charleston, West Virginia's Matthew Garretson (2-0, 1 KO).

DONYIL LIINGSTION TO FACE LUIS ARIAS ON MAYDAY UNDERCARD

April 12, 2013 -The Mayweather-Guerrero undercard is continuing to take shape with the untelevised portion of the card getting a boost in the form of Californian based middleweight DonYil Livingston (8-2-1, 4KOs) squaring off against highly touted Mayweather promoted prospect Luis Arias (4-0, 3KOs). The 8 round contest will be fought at a catch weight of 165 lbs and both fighters will be looking to put on a show in front of a rambunctious crowd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Livingston will be looking to get back into the win column, although he will have a substantial advantage over Arias in the experience department. While Arias has competed on 3 different occasions this year, Livingston will be making his first appearance of 2013. However, Livingston is clearly the most significantly skilled opponent in Arias' career and the step up will determine just how ready the 22 year old prospect really is at this point. Livingston will look to take advantage of that inexperience.

"The kid is on fire right now, but he's never seen anyone like me and it's going to be too much too soon. I give him credit for stepping up like this because most fighters try to pad their record at such an early stage. I'll get the win and he'll get the learning experience, I think that's a fair trade," Livingston said.

Livingston is competing against a Mayweather Promotions' fighter on a card headlined by Floyd Mayweather Jr., but Mario Yagobi of Boxing 360, Livingston's promoter, is ecstatic with the opportunity that is being presented to his fighter.

"DonYil gets the chance to perform on the undercard of the biggest event of the year and he has to take full advantage. With the expected atmosphere that night it is important to make the best effort at turning some heads, DonYil is capable of doing just that. He isn't the kind of fighter who underestimates opponents, regardless of experience. He knows how good his opponent is and how important this fight is for turning his future aspirations into reality, he will use his ring experience to get the win and build some momentum," Yagobi said.

DonYil Livingstion is promoted by Boxing 360.  For more information on Livingston please visit www.boxing360.com.

THE TIGER, RICHAR ABRIL, TAMES THE LION, SHARIF BOGERE, TO RETAIN WBA WORLD LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP

Unbeaten Gary Russell Jr. Outpoints Vyacheslav Gusev Handily;
Replay On Tuesday, March 5, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on SHOWTIME EXTREME®

LAS VEGAS (March 3, 2013) – It may not have been an artistic success, but WBA Lightweight World Champion Richar “El Tigre” Abril will take it.

“I am very happy to get the win, but I’m not happy at all with the way the fight went,” said Abril after retaining his WBA 135-pound title with a unanimous 12-round decision over previously undefeated Sharif “The Lion” Bogere in the main event of Saturday’s SHOWTIME BOXING – Special Edition live on SHOWTIME® from The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in LasVegas.

The lanky, Cuban-born Abril (18-3-1, 8 KO’s), of Miami, Fla., won his first title defense by the scores of 116-110 twice and 115-111.  Bogere, a Ugandan living in Las Vegas, dropped to 23-1 with 15 knockouts.

In the opening bout of the telecast, unbeaten, world-rated southpaw Gary Russell Jr. (24-0, 15 KO’s), of Capitol Heights, Md., scored one knockdown en route to a lopsided 10-round decision over Russia’s Vyacheslav Gusev (20-3, 5 KO’s).  Despite hurting both his hands during the fight, featherweight Russell hurled a shutout by the lopsided score of 100-89 on all three judges’ scorecards.

The main event was 36 minutes of jungle warfare with lots of holding, grabbing, head-butts and wrestling.  After warning each fighter several times, referee Russell Mora deducted a point from each of them with the 5-foot-11 Abril losing a point for holding in the eighth round and the 5-foot-6½-inch Bogere one for leading with his head in the 12th.  There were no knockdowns, but both took turns tackling each other to the canvas.

“I was hoping for and expected a much cleaner fight,” Abril said.  “It’s hard to show your skills in a fight against a dirty fighter.  I kept getting warned for holding, but I really didn’t feel like I was holding.  He was shorter and kept coming in head-first.’’

Abril, whose three losses came on split decisions, including his last fight, against Brandon Rios, in April 2012, wasn’t worried about the verdict going against him this time.

“I definitely knew I would get the decision.  I landed all the cleanest shots,” said Abril, who connected on 35 percent of his punches (152 out of 433) according to SHOSTATS provided by CompuBox.  Bogere, who was busier but less effective, hit on only 15 percent (93 out of 614).

The right eye of The Tiger was cut from an unintentional head-butt in the sixth.  “He used his head to come in on me the whole fight,” Abril said.  “The bleeding made it hard for me to concentrate.”

Bogere said he felt the fight was much closer than the scores indicated and that he had “done enough to win.”

“He was taller and that made it difficult for me to get inside,” said Bogere, who fell short in his quest to join fellow Ugandan fighters such as Cornelius Boza-Edwards, John Mugabi, Ayub Kalule and Kassim Ouma to capture a world title. “But when I did get inside, all he did was hold.

“This is very, very disappointing.  My dream was to win the world title.  I’m not happy now and I’m pretty down, but I know I’ll come back.  You haven’t heard the last of The Lion.”

The talented Russell fought the last several rounds with a bruised left hand.  “I think I hurt it in the third round,” he said.  “The last few rounds I was tentative with it and only showed it to him.  My corner knew I’d hurt it and did a great job between rounds coming up with different strategies, like starting off with a stiff jab and maintaining it, and slowing down the pace.

“My right hand is bruised too, but I don’t think it is anything serious.  I fully expect to fight again in three months.”

According to SHOSTATS, Russell landed 229 of 797 punches (29 percent).  Gusev, making his second start in the United States, connected on just 15 percent.  Of the 214 punches he delivered, he landed only 33 times, the lowest total in the history of CompuBox for a 10-round fight.

In Saturday’s bouts on SHOWTIME EXTREME. hard-hitting middleweight Jorge Melendez (26-2-1, 25 KO’s), of Manati, P.R., knocked out Ryan Davis (24-10-3), of Granite City, Ill., in the fourth round; undefeated light heavyweight Thomas Williams (13-0, 10 KO’s), of Fort Washington, Md., registered a third-round TKO over Kevin Engel (20-8, 16 KO’s), of St. Louis; and unbeaten lightweight Jeffrey Fontanez (11-0, 9 KO’s) of Caguas, P.R., took a six-round unanimous decision over Daniel Attah (27-14-1, 10 KO’s), of Washington, D.C.

Non-televised results: Undefeated super middleweight Luis Arias (4-0, 3 KO’s), of Las Vegas, flattened Arsenio Terrazas (9-4, 8 KO’s), of Mexicali, Mex., in the first round; and unbeaten welterweight Sammy Vasquez (7-0, 5 KO’s), of Monessen, Pa., scored a second-round TKO over Leandro Albornoz (15-2-1, 5 KO’s), of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Saturday’s SHOWTIME telecast will be replayed on SHOWTIME EXTREME this Tuesday, March 5, at 10 p.m. ET/PT. Saturday’s fights will be available ON DEMAND beginning today, Sunday, March 3.

VETERAN ISHE SMITH WINS FIRST WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WITH SPLIT DECISION OVER CORNELIUS BUNDRAGE

Smith Becomes First Las Vegas Native To Capture A World Title

Replays Sunday, Feb. 24 at 9 a.m. ET/PT on SHOWTIME
& Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on SHOWTIME EXTREME

DETROIT (Feb. 23, 2013) – Ishe Smith captured the IBF Junior Middleweight World Championship and became the first Las Vegas native to win a major world title when he scored a split decision victory over Cornelius “K9” Bundrage in the main event of a special edition of SHOWTIME BOXING at the Masonic Temple Theatre in Detroit, Mich.

The fight was scored 116-111 Smith, 114-113 Bundrage and 116-111 Smith, who became the 48th ShoBox: The New Generation alum to win a world title.

In a fight that started slow and was tough to score in the early rounds, Smith (25-5, 11 KO’s) was the more active fighter and took over in the second half of the bout.  With Bundrage backing up and mostly on the defensive, Smith moved forward and found success with his right hand.

The 34-year-old Smith, a protégé and close friend of Floyd Mayweather, whose Mayweather Promotions promotes Smith, seemed to be the hungrier fighter and fought with a sense of urgency, knowing that he had to capitalize on his first championship opportunity in his 13th year as a pro.

“Thirteen years, man.  That’s all I can say,” said an emotional Smith fighting back tears of joy immediately after the bout.  “It means everything.  Five years ago I was about to kill myself and I thought about my children growing up without a dad and I didn’t do it.  I don’t know what to say.   I didn’t think I’d be here.  I’m so happy for the opportunity.

“I got hurt in camp and Floyd asked me if I wanted to pull out, but I knew I couldn’t give up.  This was my chance to become a world champion.”

The 39-year-old Bundrage (32-5, 19 KO’s) was disappointed in his performance in front of his hometown fans.

“Ishe fought a good fight, he won fair and square,” Bundrage said.  “He was the better fighter tonight.  Of course I’ll fight again.  I just need to take it to the next level like when I won the world title.  I didn’t listen to my trainer tonight or follow my game plan.”

In an interview with SHOWTIME reporter Jim Gray, Mayweather explained his loyalty to his fellow Las Vegas resident.

“Ishe is my guy.  I love him,” Mayweather said.  “When everybody turned their back on Ishe, I stuck with him.  Everyone turned their back on him and I don’t believe in turning my back on anyone.  SHOWTIME gave him a chance and I have to thank K9 for giving him a chance, too.”

In Saturday’s co-main event, undefeated middleweight prospect J’Leon Love kept his undefeated record intact with a hard-fought unanimous decision victory (100-90, 99-91 twice) over the tough Derrick Findley.

After three fairly even rounds, Love (15-0, 8 KO’s), of Las Vegas, Nev., by way of Detroit, stepped on the gas in the fourth and staggered Findley with a series of punishing combinations that opened up a cut under Findley’s right eye.  While it seemed as if Findley (20-9, 13 KOs), ofGary, Ind., barely survived the round, the bulking boxer bounced back and looked to gain momentum in a few of the latter rounds.

In the 10th, Love, who was pushed past the eighth round for the first time in his career, kept the pressure on and closed strong with a steady dose of right hands and shots to the body.

“It was a tough learning experience,” Love said.  “Derrick Findley is a tough fighter, but we asked for Derrick Findley.  We asked for a tough fighter.  I’d rather have a tough fighter on my resume than some slouch.

“He was very, very aggressive.  He gave me some close rounds. but keeping your composure and sticking to the game plan is what I learned.”

The 25-year-old Love had his promoter Mayweather also working as his trainer between rounds in the absence of his usual trainer Roger Mayweather for what proved to be the toughest fight of his career.

“He knows the experience and he knows what I’m going through so there’s nobody better than that,” Love said.

Findley, 28, complained that he got caught with a thumb in his eye early in the bout and that affected his vision.

“I couldn’t’ see after that,” Findley said.  “He can’t punch.  If he could, I wouldn’t’ have gone forward like I did, but no excuses, he’s the better man tonight.”

Said Mayweather: “It was rough fight.  We chose Findley because he’s a rough fighter, but when J’Leon faces a tough fight later on down the road, he’ll be ready for that.”

The fights will replay SHOWTIME on Sunday, Feb. 24 at 9 a.m. ET/PT, on Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on SHOWTIME EXTREME and will be available at SHOWTIME On Demand from Sunday, Feb. 24 through Saturday, March 23.

Brian Kenny served as host of SHOWTIME BOXING with Mauro Ranallo calling the action, Al Bernstein and Paulie Malignaggi serving as expert analysts with Jim Gray reporting.  The telecast was produced by Raymond Smaltz III, with Bob Dunphy directing.
