ESPN 'FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHTS' HOVHANNISYAN VS. MAICELO JOHNSON vs. GAVRONSKI JULY 11 FROM THE LITTLE CREEK CASINO

NEW JERSEY (June 11, 2014) - Gary Shaw Productions presents, ESPN "Friday Night Fights"July 11, 2014 at the Little Creek Casino Resort in Shelton, WA.  The 10-round main event will feature lightweights, Art Hovhannisyan (17-1-2, 9 KOs) vs. Jonathan Maicelo (20-1, 12 KOs) for the WBC International Silver Title.  In the co-feature, middleweights Tureano Johnson (14-1, 10 KOs) and Mike Gavronski (14-0-1, 10 KOs) will battle in a 10-round middleweight showdown for the Continental Americas USNBC Title.  The ESPN "Friday Night Fights" telecast begins at 9:00 p.m. EST / 6:00 p.m. PST.

Hovhannisiyan, who resides in Glendale, California, is coming off two impressive victories after suffering his first professional loss, a close unanimous defeat to Alejandro Perez.  With momentum mounting, Hovhannisiyan, will look to get back into world title contention with a victory.

"As a fighter, I've come to realize you learn most about yourself after a defeat," said Hovhannisiyan. "I've rededicated myself to training smarter, and my drive to be a world champion is greater than ever. Shaw knows I'm hungry to get back on top.  Maicelo will have his hands full when we step in the ring on July 11th."

Peruvian born Maicelo is also seeking to get back into title contention with a win. He vows to bring the fight to Hovhannisiyan and realizes a victory will get him closer to a world title shot.

Tureano Johnson, who hails from the Bahamas, is eager to get back into the ring after a controversial loss to Curtis Stevens, in which he was winning on all scorecards, but had the bout stopped prematurely by the referee. 

"In my last bout, the referee stopped the bout early, and I suffered my first loss," said Johnson. "It was a very disappointing moment in my career but I'm ready to move on and show the world I'm one of the best fighters in the middleweight division.  I'm coming back stronger than ever and I can't wait to mix it up with Gavronski.  Nothing is going to stop me from getting this victory.  I want to thank my promoter Gary Shaw for getting back in the ring, especially on ESPN."

Known for having power in both hands, hometown hero Mike Gavronski, has a perfect record and looks to continue his winning ways against Johnson.

Photos By Mario Serrano PALA, CA (March 7, 2014) - Tonight Gary Shaw Productions in association withGreg Cohen Promotions, Antonio Leonard Promotions and All In Entertainment presented ESPN "Friday Night Fights" to a lively crowd at the Pala Casino Spa and Resort.  Every fight was sensational as all fighters went to war with eachother. In the 10-round main event, Rustam Nugaev (27-6-1, 17 KOs) and Marvin Quintero(25-5, 21 KOs) provided the fans with a rugged night of action.  Quintero was using his hand speed and lateral movement to get off his punches while Nugaev was establishing a ferocious body attack.  Both fighters were landing power shots, but it seemed that Nugaev was landing the harder blows.  It was a close fight after four rounds but Quintero hurt his hand in the final seconds of the round.  Once the doctor deemed Quintero couldn't continue the fight was ruled a TKO in Nugaev's favor.  "I was just getting into a grove when the bout was halted," said Nugaev. "My body attack was starting to wear down Quintero.  I can see that he was starting to slow down as I was coming forward.  He was a very tough opponent and he was very effective with his punches but I was never hurt.  I feel I was on my way to knocking him out before the fight was stopped.  My promoter Gary Shaw has big plans for me this year and I'm ready to fight for a world title.  I'm taking on anyone who wants to step in the ring with me.  I will be a champion very soon, all I need is an opportunity."    In the 8-round co-feature, undefeated bantamweight sensation, Roman Morales (18-0, 9 KOs) and rugged Russian warrior, Khabir Suleymanov (16-4, 6 KOs) went to war as the fight went the distance in a crowd pleasing fight.  Morales set the tone early as he came forward landing hard body shots.  Suleymanov hit the canvass in the second round as a left hook from Morales landed on his head.  Suleymanov was game and continued on, landing some good right hands but never seemed to hurt Morales who kept coming forward.  Morales dropped Suleymanov three more times before the bout ended. Suleymanov was cut on both eyes while Morales was bleeding from his right cheek.  Both fighters showed a warrior spirit but it was Morales who looked sensation in victory.  Morales won by unanimous decision.  Scorecards read 80-68 and 79-68 twice. Undercard Results Photo by Paul Gallegos (6-round Welterweight bout)  - Unbeaten welterweight Dusty Harrison (21-0, 11 KOs) marched on with a hard fought victory against a resilient Michael Balasi (10-4, 7 KOs).  After being wobble by a powerful left hook from Balasi in the second round, Harrison came back with a left hook of his own that sent his opponent to the canvass.  Toward the end of the round, Balasi landed another left hook and dropped Harrision as the crowed was on its feet.  Harrison got up and fought smart the rest of the fight, dominating the last four rounds. Harrison dropped Balasi again in the fifth round in route to a unanimous decision.  Scorecards read 60-53 and 59-53 twice. (8-round Lightweight bout) - In a rematch, undefeated lightweight star, Alejandro Luna (17-0, 13 KOs) demolished Sergio Rivera (18-15-2, 11 KOs) by way of a first round knockout.  A powerful combination by Luan that ended with a left hook to the chin of Rivera ended the bout.  (4-round Jr. Welterweight bout) - Kenneth Sims Jr. (1-0) dominated Cory Muldrew(1-6) in his first professional fight, winning every round convincingly.  A powerful left hook to the body sent Muldrew to the canvass in the second round as Sims Jr. marched on to a four round unanimous decision.  Sims Jr. showed he has the talent to become something special as he displayed a variety of great skills.  Scorecards read 40-35 across the board.   (4-round Bantamweight bout) In his pro debut, amateur standout, Eduardo Martinez(1-0) defeated Juan Urbina (0-2) by way of a four round unanimous decision. Martinez came right out of the gate and applied pressure on Urbina as he landed power punches throughout the entire fight. Martinez looked astounding. Scorecards read 40-36 across the board.  (4-round Featherweight bout) - Rising star, Mario Barrios (3-0, 1 KOs) dominatedLionell Kelly (0-3) over four rounds in a featherweight bout.  Barrios landed a left hook to the head of Kelly in round two that send him to the deck. ESPN 'FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHTS' CO-MAIN EVENT OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED MORALES VS. SULEYMANOV MARCH 7 THE PALA CASINO RESORT AND SPA

SAN DIEGO (February 20, 2014) - Gary Shaw Productions in association with Greg Cohen Promotions, Antonio Leonard Promotions and All In Entertainment is happy to officially announce the ESPN "Friday Night Fights" co-feature to the main event attraction featuring Rustam Nugaev (26-6-1, 16 KOs) vs. Marvin Quintero (25-4, 21 KOs), taking place at the Pala Casino Spa and Resort in Pala, California on March 7, 2014. 

The evening's co-main event will feature undefeated junior featherweight Roman Morales (17-0, 9 KOs) against Russian born fighter Khabir Suleymanov (16-3, 6 KOs), in a scheduled 10-round bout.

This will be Morales' second scheduled 10-round affair, the first was back in October of last year against Roberto Castaneda.  Morales went the distance in that contest, earning a unanimous decision in the process, so it stands to reason that there should be no issues with his stamina and you could make the argument that he will be more comfortable this time around, opening the door to a fight filled with fireworks.

"I learned a lot about myself last time out and I think it was more important to get the rounds in than it would've been to get overaggressive, maybe even reckless. I'm still growing both mentally and physically, but I know I'm getting everything out of each experience. This time out I'll have a better understanding of what I'm capable of at different points in the fight, I may choose to push the gas at several points. My opponent won't be comfortable in there, I won't let him get settled. I can wait for him to make a mistake but I know I can help the issue better this time out," Morales said.

Promoter Gary Shaw feels Morales has the ability to become a force in the Jr. Featherweight division.  A good performance against Suleymanov will get Morales one step closer to a world title opportunity. 

"Morales has a great chance to elevate his position in the Jr. Featherweight division," said Gary Shaw. "I'm expecting a lot of action in this fight because I know both fighters are hungry to prove to the world that they are on the championship level.  This is a tough fight for both guys and the winner will certainly move on to bigger and better things.

The rest of the undercard will showcase some of the brightest young up and coming stars in boxing. 

Opening up the telecast will be Washington DC's undefeated welterweight sensation, Dusty Harrision Hernandez (20-0, 11 KOs) as he battles Honolulu Hawaii's Michael Balasi (10-3, 7 KOs) in an 8-round bout.

ESPN 'FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHTS' NAGAEV vs QUINTERO MARCH 7 @ THE PALA CASINO RESORT AND SPA

SAN DIEGO (February 6, 2014) - Gary Shaw Productions presents, ESPN "Friday Night Fights" March 7th at the Pala Casino Spa and Resort in Pala, California.  The card is headlined by the rejuvenated Russian warrior and top Lightweight contender, Rustam Nugaev as he takes on Mexico's Marvin Quintero in a 10-round lightweight tilt. The bout will go a long way in deciding the next potential title challenger at 135lbs.

Nugaev (26-6-1, 16KOs) is riding a five fight win streak -- four of which stem from his 2013 campaign -- and has revived his career after not competing in 2012. He is certainly knocking on the door of a title shot and a win against Quintero (25-4, 21KOs), who is coming off a loss at the hands of IBF lightweight champion Miguel Vazquez, would propel him that much closer.  Nugaev is currently ranked WBA # 3, WBC # 7 and IBF # 9.

Nugaev has been in the ring with some stiff competition and this stage should offer some familiarity. That advantage will make him dangerous. He defeated former undefeated Peruvian star, Jonathan Maicelo and Daniel Attah in 2013, both by knockout.  His approach in the ring is somewhat unconventional, but he is always determined to make great fights and puts himself in a position to stop his opponents.

"Of course the goal is to reach the top of your division and I have never wanted anything more, but I don't just want to win, I want to do it in a way that makes others take notice. Not to take anything away from winning a title because it is a huge accomplishment, but I want to win people's respect while doing so. I want to destroy my competition and leave no doubt," Nugaev said.

While the full card isn't quite set, Gary Shaw is confident in the action provided thus far.

Jonathan Maicello vs. Rustam Nugaev New Main Event On ESPN FNF April 5th

 

March 29, 2013 - Lightweight contender Marvin Quintero (25-4, 21 KOs) is out of his IBF lightweight final eliminator against Ammeth Diaz (31-11, 22 KOs). Quintero was forced to pull out of the April 5th bout -- which was scheduled to be the main event of ESPN Friday Night Fights -- after breaking his nose in camp.   

The main event has been revamped and fans in attendance at the Chumash Casino in Santa Ynez, California will get an opportunity to see fast rising lightweight Jonathan Maicello (19-0, 11 KOs) as he squares off with Russian lightweight Rustam Nugaev (22-6-1, 12 KOs) in a 10 round catch weight of 137lbs. 

Maicello, from New Jersey by way of Peru, will now get the opportunity to move from the untelevised portion of the card to the headliner spot and he plans on taking full advantage. He's used to being in the spotlight as he was a celebrity guest in his native country on Puer's version of "Dancing With The Stars".

"I've always been the type of fighter that is willing to go above and beyond to fulfill my dreams. You have to always be ready because you never know when opportunity wlll come knocking. That is why you have to always keep your mind and body in the best condition because you always have to be ready for whatever life has planned. I won't let this shot go to waste and that is why I plan on putting on the kind of performance that will leave a lasting impression on the television audience," Maicello said.

Maicello is being matched against a rugged fighter in Nugaev, and although Nugaev hasn't been active in over a year, he is confident that he has the ability to capitalize off of the same opportunity being afforded to his opponent.

"I'm ready to comeback stronger and better than ever. I feel that my record and experience trumps my opponent's and I will use that to my advantage come fight night," Nugaev said.

While the main event has received a makeover, the card's co-feature remains as scheduled with Puerto Rican knockout artist Jorge Maysonet Jr. (11-0, 10KOs) taking on southpaw Gabriel Tolmajyan (13-2-1, 3KOs) in a lightweight contest scheduled for 10 rounds. Early evidence suggests that Maysonet Jr. is a genuine powerhouse and his supporters are enthusiastic about seeing him display his authentic punching prowess.  Gary Shaw is excited as anyone to see Maysonet Jr. in action as he is one of Puerto Rico's brightest rising starts. 

"The injury Marvin sustained is unfortunate and I was really looking forward to his fight with Diaz, but Jonathan is a tremendous talent and he has the chance to move up the rankings. I truly believe that he isn't far from putting himself in a position to earn his own eliminators and with Jorge on the card fans will get the chance to better familiarize themselves with his talents. This card is all about the upcoming talent in the 135-140 divisions and fans should be excited about the rich matchups that can be made in the future, but it starts with the April 5th card," Shaw said. 

 

QUINTERO vs. DIAZ APRIL 5 ON ESPN FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHTS

March 11, 2013 - Gary Shaw Productions is excited to present lightweight contender Marvin Quintero (25-4, 21KOs) as he steps into the ring with Ammeth Diaz (31-11, 22KOs) in an IBF lightweight title elimination bout scheduled for 12 rounds on Friday, April 5th in the main event of ESPN Friday Night Fights. The fight will take place at the Chumash Casino in Santa Ynez,California.

The two lightweights have been on a collision course with each other and both have been in the ring with some of the division's best. Now, they will get the chance to meet and further separate the gap from one another.

Quintero is excited about getting the chance to get back to where he was and he says he will not squander his good fortune.

"I'm very grateful to my promoter Gary Shaw for getting me this opportunity.  I feel for Diaz because I know he is a good fighter, but he is in an impossible position. Standing between me and my destiny is not a smart career move, but he can use this fight as a lesson while I use it to get myself one step closer to my dream," Quintero said.

Diaz knows how important this fight is and what a win could do for his career; he doesn't plan on making it an easy night for Quintero.

"I'm going through hell in training camp and because of that I will put Quintero through hell on the night of the fight. This is everything to me and I won't let anyone stop me, but if Quintero is going to try he better be prepared that night. He better be prepared to deal with a wild beast and I'm warning him now that this fight won't come down to who is more talented, it will come down to who is prepared to suffer the most. I will out will him," Diaz said.

Gary Shaw is excited about the prospects of this fight and what it will mean to the winner. Shaw is also confident that this matchup will give ESPN the quality show that fans have grown accustomed to seeing on the network this year.

ABREGU WINS BIG AGAINST DULORME 

   

October 27, 2012 - Gary Shaw Productions in association with Greg Cohen Promotions, DiBella Entertainment, Thompson Boxing Promotions, Universal Promotions, Prize Fight, Joe Deguardia's Star Boxing, and Zanfer Promotions presented an amazing night of boxing at theTurning Stone Casino. 

In the 10-round main-event, Argentine slugger, Luis Carlos Abregu (34-1, 28 KOs) defeated former undefeated Puerto Rican contender, Thomas Dulorme (16-1, 12 KOs) by way of seventh round TKO to capture the WBC International welterweight title.

Dulorme set the pace early as he boxed and used his jab to keep Abregu at bay.  But in the third round, Abregu landed a powerful right hand and dropped the undefeated contender Dulrome.  Thomas took the full 8-count and regained his composure for the time being.  In the very next round, Dulorme started to use lateral movement and it gave Abregu problems. Just as it seemed Dulorme was starting to find a rhythm, Abregue landed a left hook and sent Thomas to the canvas once again. Abregu's right hands had found a home and Dulorme was still on wobbly legs and his corner stopped the fight.

"He was too young and maybe with time he'll become a better fighter," said Abregu. "He couldn't get away from my right hand and I knew at some point he was going to get caught with it.  As you can see he did and his corner stopped the fight."

"I didn't want them to stop the fight but I respect their decision because they were looking out for me." Dulorme stated. "I was controlling the fight but he caught me with a good punch but I came up and I was ok.  I'll take this experience and learn from it."

MAYFIELD RETAINS HIS NABO TITLE  

 

The co-feature attraction showcased San Francisco's undefeated WBO/NABO Jr. Welterweight champion, Karim "Hard Hitta" Mayfield (16-0-1, 10 KOs) vs. Southern California's, Mauricio Herrera (18-2, 7 KOs).  Mayfield's NABO title was on the line.

When the opening bell rang, both fighters started off slow.  Mayfield was looking to land his signature overhand right, while Herrera was being the aggressor.  The action started to heat up in the fourth round when Mayfield started to land some combinations.  Herrera wasn't backing down and snuck in a couple of right hands himself.

In the middle rounds, Mayfield started to find a home for his left hook.  Herrera continued to press the action but was finding it difficult to get off as Mayfield was smothering his punches.  A few powerful punches landed for Mayfield as he started to get into a rhythm.

The fight was close as it entered the final rounds but Mayfield started to land some nice combinations.  Herrera had his moments late but never landed anything special.  Mayfield retained his title with a unanimous decision victory as the scorecards read 96-94, 98-92, 97-93.

"My conditioning was good and I neutralized his punch output with my smothering," said Mayfield. "I didn't get hit with too many big shots and I'm happy with the win.  Next time I step into the ring I'm going to pick up my punch count."

"I felt I was landing the better shots on the inside," Herrera said. "I felt I won the fight but the judges weren't scoring the body shots I was landing in the trenches. I'll be back."

VASQUEZ REMAINS IBF CHAMPION  

In the opening televised bout, Miguel Vazquez (32-3, 13 KOs) and No. 1 contender, Marvin Quintero (25-4, 21 KOs) went the distance in a 12-round bout for the IBF Lightweight title

Early on both fighters were felling each other out but the action started to pick up in the middle rounds.  Quintero was doing his best to cut off the ring against Vasquez who was using his lateral movement to land his shots.  He had success at times, landing some solid hooks to the head Vasquez, but Vasquez continued to back pedal.  The same action continued through the middle and late rounds.  Neither fighter was ever hurt and the fight went the full twelve rounds. 

When it was all said and done, Vasquez won by split decision and retained his title.  The scorecards read 115-113 for Quintero and 116-112, 118-110 for Vasquez.

UNDERCARD RESULTS

(8-round featherweight bout) Joel Brunker (24-0, 13 KOs) vs. Carlos Fulgencio(19-9-1, 12 KOs) - Australian born Joel Brunker scored a first round knockout when he landed a devastating left hook to the body of Fulgencio.  After Fulgencio couldn't make the 10 count, the bout was halted at the 1:40 mark.

"I wanted to come out tonight and show everyone that I'm a real fighter," said Brunker. "When I landed that left hook to the body, I knew he wasn't getting up.  I want to thank Gary Shaw for believing in me and I promise to keep working hard in the gym."

(8-round welterweight bout) Javier Flores (8-0, 7 KOs) vs. Alberto Herrera (8-8-1, 5 KOs) - Herrera came out the aggressor and won the early rounds as Flores was trying to find his range.  Herrera kept coming forward Flores held his ground and the fight ended up in the trenches.  Flores' punches were landing with more force, but Herrera's chin was holding and the fans were witnessing a great fight.  Herrera was giving the undefeated Flores all he could handle and the middle rounds could have gone either way.  In the final round both fighters went for broke and toe to toe action erupted. When the final bell rang both fighters were standing but it was Flores who squeaked out a majority decision. Scorecards read 76-76, 77-75 twice.

"I was satisfied with my performance and this was a tough fight for me but it was a fight that I needed to prepare me for the next level," stated Flores. "I learned that I can go six rounds if need be, because not every fight will end in a KO.  Hererra was a lot tougher than I expected but this experience gives me confidence moving forward."

(6-round light-heavyweight bout) Ryon McKenzie (11-0, 10 KOs) Eric Watkins (7-3, 4 KOs) - In the early rounds both fighters were having their moments, but it was McKenzie who did the most damage.  Watkins did his best to back up McKenzie and he had success at times but his punches never seemed to do any harm.  As the fight progressed, McKenzie's heavier hands were landing but that didn't stop aggressive style the Watkins was displaying. McKenzie used his height, reach and superior boxing skills to win a majority of the rounds. McKenzie won by way of unanimous decision with the scorecards reading 58-56 and 59-55 twice.

"Watkins came to fight and I needed to go some rounds so I'm happy with the victory," McKenzie said. "Going the distance for the first time is something new that I'm happy to embrace and I'm ready to move on to the next one."

(6-round heavyweight bout) Eric Fields (21-1, 15 KOs) vs. Kevin Franklin (4-5, 1 KO) - In the first round Fields landed left hook to the head of Franklin and a mouse surfaced under his right eye. Fields continued to back up Franklin with his jab and the fight entered the later rounds.  Fields was trying to close out the fight with a knockout, but Franklin was too slick and the fight went the distance. Fields dominated the fight and the scorecards read 60-54 twice and 59-55.

"This was another fight were I feel I learned something new," said Fields. "It's time to get back in the gym and work on my craft."
