Newport Beach, Calif. The night will feature the return of “The Irish Bad Boy” Brennan Ward as he battles James Irvin in a middleweight feature fight. The night will also feature the start of the Bellator Season 11 Middleweight Tournament. Participants for the eight man field as well as the main event of the evening will be announced in the coming weeks.

Tickets for Bellator 123 go on sale on Friday June 6th at 10:00am EST and can be purchased on Ticketmaster.com, Bellator.com or by visiting the Mohegan Sun Box Office. Bellator 123 will broadcast live at 9 p.m. EST/ 8 p.m. CST on Spike TV. The preliminary card will be streamed live and free on Spike.com beginning at 7 p.m. EST/ 6 p.m. CST.

Ward returns to the Bellator cage after suffering defeat at the hands of reigning Bellator Middleweight Champion Alexander Shlemenko in March of 2014. After storming through the Season 9 Middleweight Tournament with three straight finishes, Ward is looking to get back to his winning ways against Irvin on September 5th.

“It’s my time and he had his,” Ward proclaimed. “I’ve been putting in the work and this guy is just in my way to getting back to where I need to be. The Sandman is going to get planked in the fourth minute of the first round, I’m already calling my shot!”

“The Sandman is back,” Irvin said. “This is where the road turns for me. I’m back, and fighting under the bright lights again for a huge promotion like Bellator, and have a tough test ahead of me in a guy like Brennan Ward. I know he likes to run his mouth and he’s a young guy, but I’m knocking this kid out on my way back to the top.”

“It’s going to be another incredible night at Mohegan Sun on September 5th,” Bellator Chairman & CEO Bjorn Rebney said. “Mohegan Sun has hosted some of the most memorable moments in Bellator history and I couldn’t think of a better venue to kick off what will be a huge Season 11 for Bellator. I can’t wait to get Brennan back in the cage, our Middleweight Tournament will be stacked, and we are going to open our Season 11 in a huge way on Friday, September 5th.”

Johnny Callas being inducted into Connecticut Boxing Hall of Fame

CTBHOF logo

Tickets on sale for Nov. 9 dinner at Mohegan Sun
UNCASVILLE, Conn. (October 2, 2013) - Sweet Science aficionado Johnny "Coach" Callas has just about done it all in boxing, ranging from being a collegiate boxing champion, to longtime coach of amateur boxers, World Boxing Council referee, and more.  The highlight of his career in boxing, however, will comeNovember 9 when he's inducted into the Connecticut Boxing Hall of Fame (CBHOF).

The Class of 2013 will be formerly inducted during the 9TH annual CBHOF Gala Induction Dinner on Saturday night, Nov. 9 in the Uncas Ballroom at Mohegan Sun. Callas will be joined by five other inductees: former world title challengers Luigi "Kid Dynamite" Campurato and Israel "Pito" Cardona, broadcaster Al Bernstein, promoter Joe DeGuardia, and USA Boxing administrator Roland Roy.

"I'm humbled and honored to be part of this class," Callas said.  "To being going in with International Boxing Hall of Famer Al Bernstein, one of my all-time favorite announcers, and all of the other inductees is incredible.  This is extra special for me because I'm being inducted with one of my boxers, Israel Cardona, who is a graduate our boxing academy (Callas founded Charter Oak Boxing Academy).  He had a solid professional boxing career and is now doing a phenomenal job coaching the Hartford Police amateur boxing program.

"I'm leaving a legacy for my family; my children and grand-children can always say that I'm in the Connecticut Boxing Hall of Fame.  It's hard to find words to properly describe how I feel about this.  I know it is something that will endure long past my time.  It means I accomplished something of value in a sport I'm so passionate about."

Callas has worked the past 24 years for the State of Connecticut's Department of Children & Family, today serving as a program manager who also operates a hotline for children protective services.

The Hartford native has refereed nearly 150 pro fights, including 12 world championships from around the world, many of which aired on HBO, Showtime and ESPN.  He has been the third man in the ring for fights involving the first woman inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame, Lucia Ryker, as well as fellow CBHOF inductees John "Iceman" Scully and "Irish" Micky Ward, and world champions Juan Manuel Lopez and Miquel Cotto.  Callas was USA Boxing Connecticut Junior Olympic chairman for 15 years, in addition to being a NCBC national college champion and three-time All-America boxer at Central Connecticut State University in the mid-eighties. Johnny also founded the aforementioned Charter Oak Boxing Academy, where he is happily and proudly remains as executive director and head coach.

"If I had to pick only one thing I did in boxing," Callas remarked, "there's no question that is would be as a boxer, especially being brought up by CBHOF inductee Billy Taylor.  He was known as the 'Coach of Coaches' on the collegiate circuit.  That's where it all started for me and if I hadn't been a boxer, I wouldn't be a coach today.  I always wanted to grow-up and give back to boxers because of what this sport can do for kids.  I love it."

Tickets for the CBHOF 9th annual Gala Induction Dinner, reasonably priced at $90.00, are on sale now by calling Kim Baker at Mohegan Sun (1.860.862.7377) or Sherman Cain at the Manchester Journal Inquirer (1.800.237.3606 X321). Doors open at 5:30 p.m. ET, cocktails at 6 p.m. ET, followed by dinner.

Go online to www.ctboxinghof.com for additional information about the Connecticut Boxing Hall of Fame, its 9th annual Gala Inductee Dinner, or past CBHOF inductees.

JOEY DAWEJKO RETURNS JAN 19TH AT THE MOHEGAN SUN CASINO

January 10, 2013 - Heavyweight prospect Joey DaWejko from Philadelphia will step back in the ring against Jarrell Miller on Saturday January 19th.  The fight will take place at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut.  For DaWejko, this will be his second consecutive fight against an undefeated fighter.

DaWejko (7-1-1, 3 KOs) embodies the very essence of a Philadelphia fighter and isn't afraid to take on the tough opposition.  He had a stellar amateur career, especially as a junior.  Labeled a small heavyweight, DaWejko stands 5'10" and uses his smaller frame to his advantage with a crafty style that complements his ability to be more agile than his usually bigger opponents.  DaWejko has fought bigger men his entire career and he thrives off of the challenge of overcoming the size disadvantage with a combination of speed and power.

Miller (4-0, 4 KOs) has won all of his professional bouts by TKO and DaWejko will look to utilize the power he possesses in both hands in order to neutralize his opponent's strength.  DaWejko knows how important it is to rebound from his last outing and suggests that placing too much emphasis on a single loss isn't a productive response to a slight setback.

"Some people take a loss but that isn't what defines a fighter, what defines a fighter is how he responds from the adversity he's faced with," DaWejko said. "I'm just anxious to prove what kind of fighter I am and to show my ability as a heavyweight.  I feel like I can bring something to the division that's my very own and no one else's.  I make it a point to try and get the most out of my in-ring experiences and I plan on giving a good performance on January 19th."

DaWejko's promoter Mario Yagobi of Boxing 360 Promotions believes DaWejko has a bright future in the heavyweight division.

"DaWejko brings a lot of heart, skill and determination to the ring," Yagobi said. "Believe me when I say that he possesses all the qualities of a big man in regards to his will and determination, but he also packs a heavyweight punch.  The fact that he can out maneuver the bigger men with crafty and agile footwork makes Joey a unique fighter.  Boxing 360 is excited to have him in our stable of fighters and it won't be long until he is one of Philly's most treasured fighters."

BRONX, NY (May 5, 2012) - 2008 U.S. Olympian Demetrius "Boo Boo" Andrade continued his march towards a world title shot, knocking out Rudy Cisneros at the end of the first round in tonight's "ESPN Boxing: FNF Special Edition," presented by Corona Extra, at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Andrade (17-0, 11 KOs), a fast-rising junior middleweight from Providence,  is rated No. 6 in the World Boxing Organization ("WBO") and No. 7 in the International Boxing Federation ("IBF").  The gifted, young southpaw established his lightning-quick jab early, followed with some solid body punching, and closed the show with a perfect right, left combination that dropped Cisneros (12-4, 11 KOs) with three seconds left in the opening round.  Chisneros, a Contender, Season Two participant, was taken out of the ring on a stretcher because he was dizzy.  He reportedly was healthy in the locker room and taken to Backus Hospital for precautionary reasons only.

Andrade, who is co-promoted by Joe DeGuardia's Star Boxing and Banner Promotions, explained that he simply followed the game plan.  "The game plan was to use my jab to set-up opportunities," he said.  "I kept throwing punches early and saw that he dropped his right....and there it goes! I knew he'd walk into it.

"I work hard to make my fights easier.  Tonight I threw combinations and established my jab.  I'm sitting down on my punches and that comes from ring generalship.  I'm putting it together - a little of this, a little of that.  If the knockout comes, it comes, but when the shot is there, I take it.  I'm not hitting him with a pillow; I'm hitting him with a brick.

Andrade jab

DeGuardia predicted super star status for his ace. "We'll keep him busy, like we said," DeGuardia commented after the fight.  "He fought here February 10th and his next fight is June 29.  We'll make an announcement next week about who he'll be fighting.  It'll be on a national network. We're looking at top opponents to fight him but it isn't easy.

"I think Demetrius can be my best fighter ever.  He can eclipse what Antonio Tarver did.  He's ready right now for a world title fight.  These two fights tonight (PPV) - Canelo and Mosley and Mayweather and Cotto -- I'm confident about Demetrius fighting anyone of them, or anybody in the world.  I tried to get him (Andrade) for Canelo's fight tonight and he (Alvarez) turned him down.  Mayweather is the superstar today.  I'm confident that this (Andrade) is the next superstar, as long as all of the stars stay aligned."

In the co-feature, Hartford favorite Addy Irizarry (8-5, 2 KOs) returned to ring for the first time in 1 ½ years, since she suffered a severely fractured ankle, against light welterweight Victoria Cisneros.  The fight ended after two rounds in a no contest due to a cut over Cisneros right eye from an accidental head-butt.

Hartford super featherweight Joseph "Chip" Perez (8-1, 2 KOs) and Juan "El Patron" Jaramillo (8-10-2, 3 KOs) had a give-and-take battle with Perez winning a unanimous six-round fight.

Vermont light middleweight Chris Gilbert (4-0, 3 KOs) kept his perfect record intact, stopping Keuntray Henson (4-5, 1 KO) in the third round.  Springfield light heavyweight Reinaldo Graceski (1-0) dominated a game Borngod Washington en route to a four-round decision.

The opening bout was entertaining until Hartford light heavyweight Tylon Burris (2-0, 2 KOs) caught pro-debuting Robert Jackson with a couple of right-handed bombs in the second round.  Jackson survived being decked the first time but referee Danny Schiavone halted the action at 1:53 of the second round when Burris dropped Jackson again.

BRONX, NY (May 3, 2012) - 2008 U.S. Olympian Demetrius "Boo Boo" Andrade has graduated from promising prospect to legitimate contender, climbing the world rating's ladder in the junior middleweight division to No. 6 in the World Boxing Organization ("WBO") and No. 7 in the International Boxing Federation ("IBF").

Andrade (16-0, 11 KOs) returns to the ring this Saturday night (May 5), headlining (starting at 10:00 PM / ET) an "ESPN Boxing: FNF Special Edition," presented by Corona Extra, on ESPN2.  The gifted southpaw faces Contender, Season Twoparticipant Rudy Cisneros (12-3, 11 KOs) in the 10-round main event on a card promoted by Joe DeGuardia's Star Boxing at  Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Attending fans at Mohegan Sun Arena will be able to remain in their seats after the live action concludes to watch a closed circuit showing of the Floyd Mayweather, Jr. vs. Miguel Cotto fight on the spacious venue's jumbo screen.

The 24-year-old Andrade, fighting out of nearby Providence, is also rated No. 15 in the World Boxing Council ("WBC") and World Boxing Association ("WBA"). Rankings, however, don't mean a lot, at least right now, to the 2007 World amateur champion who is co-promoted by Star Boxing and Banner Promotions.

"High ratings show the public where I am but, for me, I'm just 16-0 - soon to be 17-0 - and still climbing the ladder," Andrade explained his present outlook on his rising status. "I rate myself by the opponents I've fought.  When I beat top 10 guys, I'll feel like I'm really at the top of the ratings."

Andrade's last two fights, against former world title challengers, have lasted a grand total of five rounds. Last February 10 at Mohegan Sun, Andrade destroyed Angel Hernandez (30-10) in two rounds, which followed a third-round demolition of Saul Duran last September in Manchester, NH.

"I took this fight on three week's notice because I want to fight as often as possible," Demetrius said.   "I'm not making Mayweather money and need to fight to earn a living.  I've stopped opponents early in my last two fights, so I'm physically ready to come right back.  I'll be prepared and sharp."

Fighting on this "ESPN Boxing FNF Special Edition" is an added bonus, exposure-wise, for Andrade in his eighth ESPN appearance.  "I was surprised and happy to learn that I'd be fighting on ESPN on May 5th," Andrade added.  "I've grown as a fighter on ESPN. Fans have watched me improve each fight and ESPN people know I'm a good, entertaining fighter."

If Andrade stops Cisneros early, he'll be able to watch the fighter many have compared him to, Mayweather, against Cotto right after the live action concludes at Mohegan Sun.

"I'll catch the fight if there's enough time after my interviews and shower," the rising star concluded.  "If not, I'm having it taped, and will watch it later.  I like Mayweather in that fight.  He's faster and not concerned with weight.  Cotto's going to try and box but he's one-dimensional."

Supporting fights on the Andrade-Cisneros card offers a Nutmeg state flavor, starting with the co-feature, which marks the return of Hartford favorite Addy Irizarry (8-5, 2 KOs). The popular corrections officer at a Conn. prison suffered a fractured ankle in her last fight (November 20, 2010). She battles veteran welterweight Victoria Cisneros in an eight-round bout.

East Hartford super featherweight Joseph "Chip" Perez (7-1, 2 KOs) always brings a large, passionate crowd to his fights in New England.  He faces super featherweight Juan Jaramillo (8-9-2, 3 KOs) in a six-round match. Hartford light heavyweight Tylon "Shadow Boi" Burris (1-0, 1 KO) faces pro-debuting Robert Jackson in a four-round bout.

Also fighting on the undercard in four-round matches are Springfield (MA) light heavyweight Reinaldo Graceski (1-0) vs. Borngood Washington, and Windsor (VT) light middleweight Chris Gilbert (3-0, 2 KOs) vs. Keuntray Henson (4-4, 1 KO).

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (February 10, 2012) - Star Boxing's Demetrius "The Matador" Andrade turned in an electrifying performance, destroying former world title challenger Angel "Toro" Hernandez in two rounds, in tonight's ESPN Friday Night Fights main event on an entertaining card, presented by Joe DeGuardia's Star Boxing, at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Andrade improved his record to a perfect 16-0 (11 KOs) and captured his first title belt, the IBA Americas junior middleweight title. The 2008 U.S. Olympian is presently rated among the top 15 in all four governing bodies: WBO #9, IBF #12, WBC #14 and WBA #15.

The 23-year-old from Providence went to Hernandez' (30-11, 17 KOs) body in the opening round and then opened-up in the second, dropping Angel once and then again for good at 1:39 as referee Steve Smoger waved off the count and declared the outcome a knockout.

"I felt good," Andrade commented after the fight. "I was in great shape. I saw he was breathing heavy after the first round and decided to take the fight to him in the second. I knew I had him, especially after the straight left. This is my first belt and I'm going to collect a lot more. A few more fights, little more experience, and I'll be ready for anybody in the world."

Andrade is co-promoted by DeGuardia's Star Boxing and Banner Promotions.

In the co-feature, unbeaten Philadelphia junior welterweight Raymond "Tito" Serrano (18-0, 8 KOs), rated No. 15 by the WBA, bounced back from a third-round knockdown to take a unanimous 10-round decision from Kenny Abril (11-2-4, 6 KOs).
.
"It was a good fight," Serrano said. "I felt like I was winning the (third) round, but I slipped as he hit me with a jab (knockdown). I wasn't hurt. He's a strong fighter. We went a good 10 rounds. It was a good experience and I'm 18-0."

Bronx super featherweight Emanuel Gonzalez (10-0, 7 KOs) kept his perfect record intact by way of a fourth-round unanimous decision versus Jesus Bayron.

Former USBA & NABO champion "Mighty" Mike Arnaoutis (23-7-2, 10 KOs) registered a workmanlike victory by six-round decision against veteran junior welterweight Shaka Moore.

East Hartford's popular super featherweight Joseph "Chip" Perez (7-1, 2 KOs) out-gunned a game Jamell Tyson for a hard-fought six-round decision. Local favorite Jair Ramos (2-0, 2 KOs) stopped junior welterweight Miguel Rodriguez (0-2) in the second round. Super middleweight Charles Foster (2-0, 1 KO) a knockdown to defeat Borngood Washington in a spirited bout.
