REDWOOD CITY, CA (March 11, 2014) - IBA Super Flyweight Champion, Bruno Escalante (12-1-1, 6 KOs), will defend his title against Victor Ruiz (12-2, 9 KOs) Saturday April 5, 2014, at the Cache Creek Casino Resort in Brooks, California. The 10-round bout will be the main event attraction of the evening.

After making his 2014 debut a few weeks ago, a non title bout where de destroyed Lorenzo Trejo in one round, Escalante now faces his most dangerous opponent to date in Ruiz. A focused Escalante, who resides in Redwood City California by way of Cebu, Philippines, knows he's in a tough fight, but feels confident he'll come out victorious.

"Ruiz has a lot of power so I will have to be very alert with every punch he throws, said Escalante."These are the type of fights that bring out the best in me.  I've worked really hard to get to this point and I'm not going to fail.  I'm going to dictate the tone of this fight and show Ruiz that I mean business."

Ruiz, of Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico, has won nine of his last ten bouts.  His most recent win came against Jaime Diaz, back in September of 2013.  Although he hasn't faced the level of competition that Escalante has, Ruiz promises to bring the fight to Bruno.

"Escalante has never been in the ring with a fighter like me." said Victor Ruiz. "I'm going to go right at him and bring a lot of pressure.  I'm always going for the knockout and if I have Escalante hurt I'm going for the kill.  I'm going to make it a war!"

Escalante is riding a 7-fight winning streak.  His confidence is at an all time high as he looks to continue on his path to a major payday.  A win against Ruiz will get him closer to a big-time fight.

"I have dreams of making it to the top," Escalante continued. "A victory against a tough opponent like Ruiz will get me one step closer to that big fight.  My trainers Brian Schwartz and Mike Bazzel have a nice game plan that I will execute.  I'll be ready for anything Ruiz brings.  The time is now to step up my game and take my career to the next level."

This bout is being promoted by Don Chargin Productions & Paco Presents. Tickets priced at $65,$95 and $125, are on sale now and can be purchased at cachecreek.com, tickets.com, andpacopresentsboxing.com.  The weigh-in will take place at Cache Creek Casino Resort on Friday April 4 starting at 3 p.m.

The Cache Creek Casino Resort is located at 14455 Highway 16 (at the corner of Wintun Road) in Brooks, California 95606.  Doors open at 5:00 pm PT, first fight at 6:00 pm PT.

Lewkowicz Congratulates Sonsona for Sensational KO on Saturday in Macau

One-Punch Levelling of Japan's Shimoda Puts Young Filipino Back on Track to Boxing Superstardom

Sammy Gello-ani (right)
Sampson Lewkowicz of Sampson Boxing wishes to congratulate the fighter he co-promotes, former WBO Super Flyweight Champion "Marvelous" Marvin Sonsona (17-1-1, 15 KOs), who announced his return to the elite levels of professional boxing in sensational fashion on Saturday night (February 22) in the main event of a Top Rank-promoted show at the Cotai Arena in the beautiful Venetian Resort in Macao, China.

With HBO cameras rolling, Sonsona, from General Santos City in the Philippines, knocked out former WBA Junior Featherweight Champion (and current WBA #2-ranked) Akifumi Shimoda (28-4-2, 12 KOs) of Japan, with one perfectly placed left uppercut to the chin at the 1:17 mark of the third round.

The victory, a sure-fire candidate for annual "Knockout of the Year" awards, gained Sonsona the WBO International Featherweight Championship and left Shimoda senseless for nearly five minutes. So dramatic was the finishing blow, referee Danrex Tapdasan didn't even bother to count.

For Lewkowicz, the win was especially sweet as many had given up on the now 23-year-old southpaw Sonsona, who in 2009 at age 19, became the second-youngest Filipino to ever win a world title, but was then beset by personal problems and an admitted lack of dedication. He has since won four straight fights, three inside the distance.

"Marvin is still one of the three most popular fighters in his homeland, alongside Manny Pacquiao and Nonito Donaire," said Lewkowicz. "He had the problem that many big-name boxers run into: he surrounded himself with the wrong people and stopped taking his sport seriously. He has matured so much since then and completely rededicated himself with his original team of me, his trainer Jun Agrabio, his other co-promoter Sammy Gello-ani and his manager Dr. Rajan Yraola. He knows his mistakes now and they will never happen again."

So dramatic was the KO of Shimoda, legendary promoter Bob Arum was quoted as calling it one of the best he's seen in 50 years of boxing. Lewkowicz says he's proud to also announce that he and Top Rank will be joining forces in the guidance of Sonsona's career.

"I want to thank Carl Moretti and Bob Arum for the trust they have given me and for agreeing to help me turn Marvin Sonsona into the next world superstar from the Philippines. I consider him another of my sons and he calls me 'Papa' in return. This is a wonderful comeback story in boxing and Marvin will be champion of the world once again very soon. I also want to thank the beautiful Venetian Macau for their incredible hospitality and all their work in turning Macau into a new boxing capital in the world."

The four major champions in the featherweight division are currently: Jhonny Gonzalez (WBC), Orlando Salido (WBO), Evgeny Gradovich (IBF) and Simphiwe Vetyeka (WBA).

Striegl and Cali Impress at PXC 34

Manila, Philippines- Before a raucous crowd at the storied Araneta Arena, Pacific Xtreme Combat (PXC) reasserted its status as the premier talent generator for the Asia Pacific Region at PXC 34.  On a card that was broadcast live on TV 5 in the Philippines and streamed globally on giant MMA website Sherdog.com, a crop of the best young mixed martial artists in the region impressed in 12 action packed fights. In the nights co main events two of PXC’s top stars both won impressively.

Undefeated featherweight Mark Striegl passed his toughest test to date by easily submitting Harris Sarmeinto, an accomplished veteran of over 60 professional fights. Striegl, who is a highly effective grappler, used a patented version of the shoulder lock to submit his opponent in the first round.  After his victory Striegl set the stage for a huge fight in PXC when he called out Featherweight Champion Baby Joe Taimanglo who was sitting in the crowd.

PXC flyweight Champion Ale Cali retained his belt with a third round stoppage of Erwin Tagle.   Cali, a former professional boxer, used classy footwork and smooth angles to confuse his opponent and set a pace that the older challenger couldn’t keep up with.  Tagle was competitive early but faded badly in the third round. When he had trouble answering the bell for the fourth round referee “Big” John McCarthy stopped the fight.

PXC CEO EJ Calvo said after the event “ With more events and continued growth internationally, PXC is consistently producing the best MMA action in the Asia Pacific region and developing the best up and coming fighters.  We saw two fighters signed to the UFC this year and it would be surprising if more don’t get the call soon as the UFC increases the focus on Asia. PXC 34 was epic! Great performance from the stars of Asia Pacific MMA and a couple of surprises from new talent. 2013 will be the biggest year yet.”

Sonsona started boxing as an amateur at the age of seven and had 150 amateur fights before turning professional in 2007, just weeks before his 17th birthday.

30-year-old Orlando Cruz hails from San Juan, Puerto Rico, and represented his homeland at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, as a bantamweight.
