"The doctor said Bruno can make a quick recovery if he lets his hand heal properly," said ManagerHerb Stone. "He could return after a few months of rehab.  Bruno proved to me he has tremendous heart carrying on with a broken hand.   I'm hoping he can fight by the end of the summer. Photo Credit Mario Serrano CALIFORNIA (April 5, 2014) - Tonight at the Cache Creek Casino, Bruno "The Aloha Kid" Escalante (13-1-1, 6 KOs) successfully defended his IBA Super-Flyweight title with a unanimous decision victory against a game Victor Ruiz (12-3, 9 KOs). Escalante vs Ruiz was presented by Don Chargin Productions, Paco Presents Boxing and Cache Creek Casino Resort. In the early rounds, Ruiz pressed the action and won a few rounds before Escalante got into his grove.  Escalante made the proper adjustments in the middle rounds and used superior boxing skills and defense to confuse Ruiz as he took the lead going into the final two rounds.  Ruiz tried to make a final push but Escalante dug deep and finished strong.  Escalante hurt his hand in round 2 and fought with his right hand for most of the fight.  Scorecards read 98-92, 97-93, and 96-94 all in favor for Escalante. "This was a tough fight but I made the proper adjustments to come out on top," said Escalante. "Ruiz is a warrior but he never hurt me except when I busted my left hand in the second round, but that came from me hitting him.  My cornermen Brian Schwartz and Mike Bazzel gave me great advice.  They told me to use my jab and stay relaxed.  My defense was on point tonight and I was in great shape.  I will go to the hospital tonight to get an x-ray of my hand. REDWOOD CITY, CA (February 18, 2014) - With less than a couple of weeks away from his 2014 debut, IBA Super-Flyweight champion, Bruno Escalante (11-1-1, 5 KOs) talks about his training camp, being awarded 2013 Nor-Cal Fighter of the Year, and his upcoming fight against Lorenzo Trejo (33-28-1, 20 KOs) at Fox Theatre in Redwood City, California, February 28th.

How has training camp coming along?

Bruno:  Everything is going great.  I have a fabulous team of coaches I'm surrounded by on a daily basis.  My boxing coach Brian Schwartz and strength and conditioning mentor Mike Bazzel are pushing me every day.  Sprint coach Remi Korchemny is working on my explosion.  Victor Conte provides me with the best nutrition and supplements.  I'm with the best team in boxing.

Speaking of you and your team, you were recently voted 2013 Nor-Cal Fighter of the Year for the second time by two different sources.  And your trainers and manager were also awarded.  How does that make feel?

Bruno: Like I said, I have a tremendous team that works hard and I'm very thankful for all that they do for me.  My manager Herb Stone is a great man who has really made a difference in my career keeping my busy.  In 2013 I had five fights and this year I'm looking to do the same. Schwartz and Bazzel are the best trainers for me, they continue to teach me knew things all the time. I'm very humbled and honored to be in the position I'm in at the moment.

What was it like capturing the IBA title?

Bruno:  Man it was a great feeling.  All the hard work has been paying off.  Mikey Ruiz was a tough fighter and we went toe to toe in that fight.  I feel I'll be ready to challenge all the champions in my division with a few more fights. I'm improving with each fight.

You'll be the main event attraction February 28th against veteran Lorenzo Trejo at the Fox Theatre in Redwood City. Can you talk about this matchup?

Bruno: Trejo brings a lot of experience to the ring with over 60 fights under his belt.  He's been in there with some tough fighters so I know he'll be coming to fight.  I expect a rough fight but I'll be ready for whatever he brings to the table.

In closing would you like to say anything to your fans?

IBA CHAMPION BRUNO ESCALANTE RETURNS AGAINST TREJO IN NON TITLE DEFENSE

   

Redwood City, CA (February 5, 2014) - Newly crowned International Boxing Association (IBA) Super Flyweight Champion, Bruno "The Aloha Kid" Escalante (11-1-1, 5 KOs), from Redwood City, CA by way of Cebu, Philippines, will make his 2014 debut in a non title defense on Friday, February 28th, against Lorenzo Trejo 33-28-1 (20 KOs) from Ciudad Obregon, Sonora, Mexico.  The 10-round main event attraction will take place at the Fox Theatre in Redwood City. 

Escalante was just named 2013 Northern California Fighter of the year while ending a successful 2013 by winning the IBA Super Flyweight Championship in a majority decision over Michael Ruiz Jr. on December 7.  Escalante's record was 5-0 throughout 2013 and he is looking to improve it over this next year.

"My goal is to continue working my way up the top of the Super Flyweight division," said Escalante. "Trejo is a veteran with a lot of experience and I'm taking this fight very seriously.  I'm in great shape, I feel I'm at the top of my game, and on fight night I'm going to give the fans a great show."

In a 6 round co-main event, Jonathan "El Carismatico" Chicas 12-1 (5 KO) from San Francisco, CA, will take on veteran Rogelio Castaneda Jr. 26-19-3 (8 KOs) of Sacramento, CA. Chicas  is fresh off his sensational TKO win over Rodolfo Armenta on December 7, 2013 and is looking to improve his record. While the veteran, Castaneda Jr. has fought tough fighters such as Lucas Matthysse and will look for a strong comeback against Chicas.

By Ryan Songalia - RingTV.com The commute from Bruno Escalante's home to the venue of his next fight this Saturday night shouldn't take longer than 15 minutes.  The SportsHouse in Redwood City, Calif., where will face Michael Ruiz Jr. in his first ten-round bout, is just on the other side of town from where he has lived since moving to the Bay Area in 2009. The scenery is familiar to Escalante (10-1-1, 5 knockouts), and so is the opponent, having split a pair of bouts against Ruiz (9-3-1, 3 KOs) as an amateur. While making it to the ring on Saturday night will be simple, the journey to this point has been anything but. Escalante, 25, is a California-based, Hawaii-raised and Filipino-born junior bantamweight prospect gunning for his sixth straight win as a professional.  Adopting the nick name "The Aloha Kid" as an homage to the state that he called home from age 8 to 20, Escalante was born in the small town of Sibonga in the Philippine province of Cebu. Escalante was the youngest of ten children; his father made sofas out of bamboo while his mother sold beverages at a fair on Thursdays to help support them all. "When I was younger, my parents, my brothers and siblings would work just for food," said Escalante. "That's the money for the following week, to buy dried fish, vegetables. We couldn't get rice." Relief and hope came in the form of Escalante's grandmother on his father's side, whom they discovered was an American citizen based on the fact she was born in Hawaii before returning to the Philippines at age three. The family saved up enough money to send their grandmother back to Hawaii, where she would petition for visas for the entire family to return.
