ONCE AGAIN ELITE HEAT / McGirt BOXING TEAM TAKE HOME HARDWARE AT ADIDAS CUP IN QUEBEC

NEWARK, NJ —This past weekend, New Jersey’s number one amateur boxing team, The Elite Heat / McGirt Boxing Team traveled to Quebec, Canada and were dominant at the esteemed Adidas Cup.

The team which consists of 12 boxers that range in ages 9-18 competed in 31 bouts against some of the best in Canada and came away with an astonishing 27-4 record in those bouts.\

The roster consisted of some of the best Jr. Olympic youngsters in the country.

Kavon Robertson (12 Years Old, 85 lbs)—2011 National PAL Champion, 2012 Ringside World Champion.  Won the championship in Quebec

Malik Nelson (12 Years old 75 lbs.)—2012 Jr. Golden Gloves Champion, 2012 Ringside World Champion, 2013 National Silver Gloves champion.  Won the championship in Quebec.

Vito Mielnicki (11 Years old, 75 lbs)—2011 and 2012 National Golden Gloves champion, 2012 Ringside World Champion, 2011 Title National Champion.  Won the championship in Quebec.

Mudah Salaam (15 Years old, 132 lbs.)—2012 Silver Gloves National Champion.  3^rd Place in Quebec

Jahlil Hackett (10 Years old, 80 lbs.) —2012 Title National Champion.  3^rd Place in Quebec

Zahir Salaam (9 years old, 70 lbs.)—2012 Adidas National Champion.  Won the championship in Quebec

Zyaad Hassan (11 Years old, 85 lbs.)—Won the championship in Quebec.

Oscar Lopez (13 Years Old, 101 lbs.)—2^nd Place in Quebec

Steven Ramirez (13 Years old, 106 lbs.)—3^rd place in Quebec

Jeremy Saldana (15 Years Old, 141 lbs.)—Won the championship in Quebec

Jeffrey Rodriguez (15 Years old, 152 lbs.)—Won the championship in Quebec

Jonel Larenzo (19 Years Old, 132 lbs.)—Won the championship in Quebec.

What made these accomplishments even more impressive is that the all of the Elite Heat / McGirt boxers had to win 2 or 3 bouts to win their championships and the kids also had to fight up in weight and age.

The team showed skills, power and ability to box and were much more skilled then their Canadian opponents.

The Elite Heat / McGirt Boxing team is a grass roots team that are looking to build and groom the best boxers from the ground up.

The Elite Heat / McGirt will next travel to Washington, D.C ad take on the best amateur fighters from the nation’s capital.

The team is supported by GH3 Promotions and Greg Cohen Promotions and is coached by Charles Johnson, Bernard Hackett and Muhammad Salaam

Palm Beach Boxing Center to host Bute Camp!

 

Palm Beach, FL (March 24, 2013) – Boxing star Lucian Bute will host his upcoming training camp at the Palm Beach Boxing Center in Palm Beach, FL.

 

Bute, 33-1 (24 KO’s), is one of the biggest ticket draws in boxing and held the IBF Super Middleweight crown for more than four years. A Quebec native by way of Romania, Bute defeated unbeaten Denis Grachev for the NABF Light Heavyweight championship in front of a sold out crowd at the Bell Centre last November.

 

A 12,000 sq ft facility that is quickly becoming one of boxing’s hotspots, the Palm Beach Boxing Center’s held camps for world champions Devon Alexander, Cory Spinks and Nate Campbell as well as 2008 Olympian Matt Korobov. The gym’s also hosted Andre Dirrell, Kassim Ouma, Riddick Bowe, Jameel McCline and Oleg Maskaev amongst others.

 

Bute, who opens camp Tuesday, March 26 for his mega-fight against fellow Canadian transplant Jean Pascal, is training for the fourth time at the Palm Beach Boxing Center. Prior to his last camp, Bute sent a truck with a ring down from his gym in Canada to Palm Beach, a sign that he plans to continue training in Florida. He’s also received much fanfare in the Sunshine State.

 

“I’m happy to have him back hosting camp at the gym,” said Palm Beach Boxing Center Owner Lou Martinez. “Lucian is very comfortable here and he’s a great guy. There’s a lot of interest when we host open training sessions. The French-Canadians of Florida love watching him and definitely make him feel like he’s at home.”

 

Joining Bute and Trainer Stephan Larouche will be the 2012 Canadian Women’s Olympic Boxing Team. Trained by Larouche’s wife, the Olympic Team will train at the Palm Beach Boxing Club and workout with the top female fighters in the area.

 

“These next few months are going to be exciting,” stated Martinez. “Between Bute and the Olympians, there’s going to be a lot of quality fighters coming in and out of the gym. It will be an excellent experience for everybody involved and it’s my pleasure to host them.”

JOEY DAWEJKO LOOKING TO GET BACK IN THE WIN COLUMN

 

September 27, 2012 - Looking to rebound from his first professional loss is Philadelphia Heavyweight, Joey Dawejko (7-1-1, 3 KOs), who faces undefeated Oscar Rivas (11-0, 6 KOs), a Colombian born fighter who now resides in Montreal, Canada.  The 6-round bout will take place on October 12, 2012 at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec.

In his last fight, Dawejko lost a close split decision where one judge scored the bout 59-55 in his favor.  After reflecting on the loss, Dawejko feels he can step up his game by working harder on his conditioning.

"I'm a better fighter then what I showed in my last fight," said Dawejko. "I believe if I work harder on my conditioning I'll be able to perform at a higher level.  I'm going into this fight with a different mindset.  I plan to be more aggressive and let me hands go much more."

Rivas is coming off a split decision win against Sylvera Louis (4-2, 1 KO) and Dawejko believes he has the boxing skills to win this fight.

"Fighting an undefeated is a difficult challenge for any fighter," continued Dawejko. "But I feel I have the boxing skills to beat this guy.  Rivas has some skills but I'm determined to give him his first loss.  This fight will be a testament to me and my will to win.  I'm going to do everything I can to come out victorious."

Team Thompson Reflects on Poulard Bout

Buffalo, NY (May 22, 2012) – After ten hard-fought rounds against Canadian contender Nicholson Poulard last Saturday evening, Lionell “Lonnie B” Thompson returned to his corner feeling like a winner.

 

The Buffalo, NY native and former top ranked amateur had no doubt that his solid performance would raise his professional ledger to 13-0. Prior to the judges’ final tally being announced, Jean Pascal, Poulard’s brother, entered the ring to congratulate Team Thompson on what appeared to be a victory; until the unexpected happened.

 

With the verdict in his possession, the ring announcer notified the pro-Poulard crowd at the Holiday Inn in Quebec that there was a split decision. Judge Don Ackerman scored the bout 97-73 for Poulard, followed by Pasquale Procopio’s 97-93 tally for Thompson. Shocked by Ackerman’s card, Thompson started raising his hand when Kelly Zolnierczyk’s 96-94 scorecard came in. Unfortunately, the decision went to the hometown favorite.

 

“I’m a fighter at heart so fighting a guy in his backyard isn’t a problem,” stated Thompson, who’s fought four times in Canada, once in the United Kingdom and in four different US states. “If the fight was close, I wouldn’t be mad if they gave it to him. If you win a fight by as wide of a margin as I (appeared to), something is wrong. One of the ringside reporters said he’d give Poulard two rounds if he was generous. The judges had to be paid off or were asleep. I can’t see any other way they scored the fight against me.”

 

Thompson also found himself in a baffling situation at Friday’s weigh-in. Shortly before getting on the scale in front of the Quebec Boxing Commission, Thompson double checked his weight in his hotel room. On the hotel’s scale, he was half a pound under the light heavyweight limit if 175 lbs. To his unpleasant surprise, the commission’s scale had him almost a pound overweight.

 

“My scale had me at 174 and change. Their scale had me at 175.8 and when I took my underwear off, I was 176. How could I weigh more with less clothes on? Something clearly isn’t right there. I trained hard for four months for this fight and it was stolen from me in more ways than one. Even if I was rightfully awarded the decision, the belt would’ve remained vacant.”

 

“I’d love a rematch in America but I doubt he gives me one. The judges in Canada suck and they don’t know anything about boxing. The last time I checked, you win fights by landing punches, not throwing them and missing. Boxing is about being effective, if you’re not effective it doesn’t matter. Anybody with eyes knows that I won that fight and so does Poulard!”

 

Tim Ziccardi, Thompson’s manager, views his fighter as the clear-cut victor and doesn’t believe going back to the drawing board is necessary.

 

“We want to get him back in the ring as soon as possible,” said Ziccardi, who also hails from Buffalo. “He has no lumps or bruises and there’s no reason to stay on the sidelines when we don’t have to. I look at it this way, we stepped up and passed the test whether the judges want to give it to him or not. We’re planning to continue stepping up and keep moving forward, even after this unfortunate situation.”

Gonzalez, Stevenson Weights on Track for April 20 Clash

South America's WBC Silver Super Middleweight Champion Noe "El Carbonero" Gonzalez (28-1, 20 KOs) weighed in at 180.78 lbs and his opponent, Adonis "Superman" Stevenson (17-1, 14 KOs) weighed in at 176.37 lbs at the WBC-mandated 30-day safety weigh-in for their April 20 fight.

The two will meet in the 12-round main event of a Groupe Yvon Michel/Sampson Boxing blockbuster night of boxing at the Bell Centre, Montreal, Quebec, that will also be televised live on ESPN Friday Night Fights.

The WBC No. 2-rated Gonzalez and IBF No. 2 ranked Stevenson will also be competing for Stevenson's IBF Inter-Continental, NABO and NABA titles.

The match-up has "potentially explosive" written all over it. Gonzalez has stopped his last 11 foes dating back to 2008 and Stevenson is coming off of a February 18 first-round knockout over Jesus Gonzales that is a strong candidate for knockout of the year.
