Hall of Famer Riddick Bowe Joins Team Fight to Walk!

 

New York, NY (December 30, 2014) – 2015 International Boxing Hall of Fame inductee and former heavyweight champion Riddick “Big Daddy” Bowe has joined Team Fight to Walk.

 

An elite heavyweight in his heyday, Bowe captured the undisputed world championship in 1992 after besting then-unbeaten Evander Holyfield. Bowe and Holyfield fought twice more, with Holyfield winning the rematch and Bowe dramatically stopping the future hall of famer in the rubber match. The Bowe-Holyfield trilogy is considered one of the greatest in boxing history. In addition to twice besting Holyfield, Bowe defeated former or future champions Pinklon Thomas, Tony Tubbs, Bruce Seldon, Michael Dokes and Herbie Hide.

 

Recently, Bowe met Team Fight to Walk co-founder Boyd Melson at the WBC Convention in Las Vegas where Melson received the Ambassador of Peace Award. The two started talking and Bowe immediately took an interest in the cause Melson fights for. Shortly after the convention, he agreed to join Team Fight to Walk and the fight against paralysis. 

 

“When Boyd told me what he was doing, I was amazed,” Bowe said. “I was familiar with spinal cord injuries after hearing about the accident Paul Williams was in a few years back and I know he’s fighting to walk again. But to hear that somebody donates all of their earnings in the ring when everybody else is concerned with keeping every penny possible is really something else. My goal is to help raise awareness and show people that even though things may be dim that there is a bright light (with the pending trials).”

Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini International Boxing Hall of Fame Class of 2015 inductee

TORONTO/NEW YORK CITY (Dec. 4, 2014) - The International Boxing Hall of Fame (IBHOF) today announced its newest class of inductees, including former world lightweight champion Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini. Also being inducted into the IBHOF are Class of 2015 Living inductees  heavyweight champion Riddick "Big Daddy" Bowe and featherweight champion "Prince" Naseem Hamed in the Modern category; light flyweight champion Yoko Gushikenin the Old-Timer category; booking agent / manager Rafael Mendoza and referee Steve Smoger in the Non-Participant category; and editor / journalist Nigel Collins and broadcaster Jim Lampley in the Observer category.   Mancini, fighting out of Youngstown, Ohio, captured the World Boxing Association (WBA) lightweight championship in 1982, stopping Arturo Frias in the 15th round, and successfully defended his WBA title four times against Ernesto Frias (TKO1), Deuk-Koo Kim (KO14), Orlando Romero (KO9) and Hall-of-Famer Bobby Chacon (TKO3). Eleven years after his final fight, a spectacularly chiselled, lean, and dangerous 48 year-old Ruddock is ready to breathe new life back into the comatose heavyweight scene.

"I've never been in this shape in my life," the 211 lb. Ruddock beamed.

"I always got by on my ability, and trained as hard as I knew how back in the day. But now I know so much more. Not just about boxing, but myself as well."

Be warned, the 2012 version of Donovan Ruddock isn't venturing on a stereotypical boxing comeback. Unlike other boxers who step back in to the ring, Ruddock (38-5-1, 29 KO's) was never pounded into retirement in the first place. After suffering his final defeat - a controversial TKO loss to Tommy Morrison in June of 1995 - a much heavier "Razor" returned from a three year hiatus to go on a 10-0 rampage that included 9 KO's, before a shoulder injury forced him to hang up the gloves in 2001.

"At this weight I feel even faster, stronger and more lethal than when I had ringside doctors running all over the place," Ruddock said.

Ruddock is hoping that a busy summer - consisting of at least three fights – will culminate in a clash with reigning Canadian Heavyweight champion Neven Pajkic.

"First thing, I want my Canadian Heavyweight title back."

"I really respect Neven. He's a warrior who carries the title with class and pride. But, sadly for him, he's wearing the belt that I want."

"Then when Neven is healing up, hopefully he'll take some comfort in the fact that I'll be putting Tyson Fury, Chris Arreola, Derrick Chisora, David Haye, Bermane Stiverne, Seth Mitchell, and Tomasz Adamek, on the exact same pudding diet too."

"And after I feast on the appetizers, I'll dive in for two helpings of Chicken Kiev," Ruddock, an avowed vegan, said of facing the current heavyweight kingpins, Ukrainians Vitaly and Wladimir Klitschko.

"The older brother (WBC Heavyweight champ Vitaly) avoided me 11 years ago, and now he has to pay. And the younger one (WBA, IBF, WBO Heavyweight champ Wladimir) just bores me. I'll have to knock him out too."
