(June 6, 2014) - In an ESPN Friday Night Fights main event on International Boxing Hall of Fame induction weekend, featuring a pair of fighters celebrating their 33rdbirthdays tonight, 2004 Olympic silver medalist Yudel Jhonson (16-1, 9 KOs) captured the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) and North American Boxing Association (NABA) by winning a unanimous 10-round unanimous decision (97-91 X3) over  former Mexican champion Norberto "Demonio" Gonzalez (20-4, 13 KOs).      The entertaining top-to-bottom show was presented by Iron Mike Productions (IMP) at Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, New York.  Supporting promoter Mike Tyson at tonight's fights were world champions Oscar de la Hoya, Andre Ward, Zab Judah, Felix "Tito" Trinidad, Leona Brown and actress/boxing fan Rosie Perez. "It was a great night, I'm very proud," Tyson remarked. "This was better than our first show here and the next time will be even better.  It's all about consistency.  We saw some great fighters tonight and the fans were great, too.  These guys make me look good, I'm honored.  "Oscar and Andre saw some good fights. There's nothing better than hearing that from my peers.  I'm really proud of Sammy.  He's an entertainer. I'd like to bring him back to Pittsburgh to fight Paul Spadafora, who is a great fighter.  That will be a big fight." Jhonson, a stylist Cuban southpaw living in Miami, boxed his way to victory, decking Gonzalez with a short left in the fifth, buckling him in the sixth, and dropping him with a left in the ninth round.  "At the moment with my team, my managers and promoters," Jhonson said after the fight, "I'm here to fight the top junior middleweights in the world and I proved that tonight.  I'm looking for my world title shot.  I'd like a rematch with Willie Nelson, to fight Ishe Smith, or any of the world champions.  I'm open to fighting quality fighters to get my world title." Red-hot welterweight Sammy "The Who Can Mexican" Vasquez, Jr. (15-0, 11 KOs) proved once again why he's one of the most fan friendly fighters in boxing.  In the ESPN co-feature, the aggressive southpaw from Monessen, PA attacked like the Iraq War veteran he is, dropping "Smokin'" Jay Krupp (17-7, 8 KOs) in each of the first three rounds, after which referee Benji Estevez halted the action at the 1:19 mark.   "For my fans out there, the soldiers and family, it was an honor fighting on ESPN," Vasquez commented.  "I want to thank IMP and my father for getting me here.  I thought it was a B performance.  I made a couple of errors but did what I needed to do." Khytrov destoyed Chatman   Khytrov, now living in Brooklyn, recently signed a contract with IMP and is co-promoted by Fight Promotions, Inc.  "The advice of my corner for the first round was to feel-out my opponent without showing much offense to see how things would go and let my opponent work." Khytrov said after the fight.  "I was the left hook was there from the first round but I waited a little until the left hook would be more effective.  I had the straight right, left hook set-up from the first round." (May 27, 2014) - Iron Mike Productions (IMP) returns June 6 to the site of its promotional debut last August, Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, New York, to present another live ESPN Friday Night Fights event from upstate New York, celebrating the 2014 International Boxing Hall of Fame induction weekend. Ascending 2004 Olympic silver medalist Yudel Jhonson (15-1, 9 KOs) headlines in the 10-round main event against Mexican invader Norberto "Demonio" Gonzalez (20-3, 13 KOs) for the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) FECARBOX Junior Middleweight Championship.   Jhonson, the two-time Cuban National Champion now fighting out of Miami, was a gold medalist at the prestigious 2002 World Cup, defeating former world champion Daniel Geale, in addition to winning top honors at the 1999 Pan-American Games, 2001 Goodwill Games and 2006 Central American & Caribbean Games. Gonzalez, a former Mexican welterweight champion, is coming off of a controversial 10-round split decision loss to Roberto Garcia (33-3) this past February, after winning an impressive 10-round unanimous decision over Michael Oliveira (21-1) last November. In the 8-round ESPN co-feature, two-time All-Army and Armed Forces champion Sammy "The Who Can Mexican" Vasquez Jr. (14-0, 10 KOs) takes on fan favorite "Smokin'" Jay Krupp (17-6, 8 KOs) from nearby Catskill, New York. The highly-entertaining Vasquez is an undefeated welterweight from Monessen, Pennsylvania who did two tours in Iraq as a U.S. Army National Guard specialist.  He reached the semifinals of the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team trials.  Krupp's last fight was an 8-round loss by decision to 2008 Olympian and present North American Boxing Organization (NABO) welterweight champion Sadam Ali (19-0) last September, in which Krupp dropped Ali in the opening round. Unbeaten 2012 Ukraine Olympian Ievgen "The Ukraine Lion" Khytrov (4-0, 4 KOs) will make his first IMP appearance in a six-round Special Middleweight Attraction versus battle-tested Chris Chatman (12-3-1, 5 KOs), of San Diego, in the ESPN opener. The 25-year-old Khytrov, now living in Brooklyn, was a gold medalist at the 2011 World Championships as well as the 2007 European Junior Championships.  Chatman gave current WBO junior middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade (7-0) his toughest fight to date as a professional (DEC6 in 2009) and fought Charles Hatley (14-0) to an 8-round draw in 2011. Detroit light heavyweight Isiah Thomas (12-0, 6 KOs) puts his undefeated record on the line against Pittsburgh veteran Rayco "War" Saunders (23-23-2, 10 KOs) in an 8-round fight.  Thomas' last action was a 10-round unanimous decision win over former World Boxing Association (WBA) light heavyweight champion Richard Hall (30-10) for the interim WBA Fedelatin cruiserweight title. ROD SALKA GIVES ALEXEI COLLADO A BOXING LESSON IN FRONT OF HIS HOMETOWN CROWD ON SHOWTIME

And then he stated his case for a world title shot. Salka was the more intelligent and effective fighter from the opening bell, pounding the body and utilizing his superior movement in an impressive 10-round unanimous decision victory (96-94, 96-93, 96-93) over the previously undefeated Collado at the Monroeville Convention Center in Monroeville, Pa., just down the road from his hometown of Bunola, Pa. The naturally bigger fighter, Salka scored a third-round knockdown and essentially kept Collado at bay, limiting him to looping, clubbing right hands that rarely landed. "I'm heading to Carson next week to call out the winner of Figueroa-Belmontes," said Salka as he celebrated with his Pittsburgh-area fans after the fight. "I want to fight whoever wins that, doesn't matter to me. I earned a shot at the title." Salka was referencing next Saturday's SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING showdown between WBC Lightweight World Championship Omar Figueroa and Jerry Belmontes at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. "I dictated the pace of the fight. I kept him where I wanted him and forced him to keep going for that overhand right, which he couldn't land cleanly. I was throwing first and throwing last, just like I wanted to do. I mixed up my offense well and kept my hands up." It was a learning experience for the previously undefeated Collado (18-1, 16 KOs), a former Cuban standout who had over 300 amateur bouts. "He was smart and that was the difference," Collado said. "He kept moving. His movement was the problem for me." ShoBox expert analyst Steve Farhood agreed with Collado's assessment and was impressed with what he saw from the lightweight contender. "You have to love what Salka did and how he did it," Farhood said. "Even after scoring a left hook knockdown, he stayed with his game, didn't try to do what he couldn't do and remained poised and confident in his own abilities. His conditioning was fantastic and even though he did nothing to surprise Collado, the Cuban couldn't find the answer." In the ShoBox co-feature, undefeated Dominican prospect and Olympic gold medalist Felix Diazscored a close, eight-round split decision victory over Emmanuel Lartey, scored 77-75 (Diaz), 77-75 (Lartey), 77-75 (Diaz). Diaz was aggressive early and was most effective when he utilized combinations, but was hurt in the third by a right-left combo from Lartey (15-2-1, 7 KOs) that seemed to change the pace bout for a few rounds. Diaz (15-0, 8 KOs) came back and took control of the fight, doing his best work against the ropes and spoiling a potential birthday celebration for the now twice-beaten Ghanaian prospect. "It's disappointing to know it was scored a split decision," Diaz said. "I think I dominated most of the rounds so I don't see how the judges scored it that way. "I want to see my family - it's been three months - and then head back to Oxnard to get in the gym with Robert (Garcia)." Lartey also took issue with the judges' scorecards. . "I can't tell the judges what to do," Lartey said. "I think it should have been scored a draw. This is the only job I know. I need to go back to the gym and work on some things. In a matchup of southpaws in opening bout of the telecast, local favorite and undefeated welterweight prospect Sammy Vasquez, Jr., handed fellow unbeaten Juan Rodriguez, Jr., the first loss of his career with a dominating first round TKO. Vasquez (14-0, 10 KOs) scored a knockdown with a left shot to the face less than 20 seconds into the bout, followed by a left body shot that sent Rodriguez (11-1, 5 KOs) to the canvas less than a minute later. Rodriguez went down yet again after a barrage of punches, spit out his mouthpiece and the referee stopped the bout at 2:49 of the first. "It's not that it was easy, it was that it was well-executed," said Vasquez, a U.S. Armed Forces veteran who served two tours of duty in Iraq. "We had a game plan, stuck to it and that's what happened. All the fans, the soldiers watching overseas on AFN (American Forces Network), my family watching on SHOWTIME, that was the biggest part of the night."
