FOX SPORTS 1, FOX DEPORTES DELIVER 1-2 PUNCH WITH BIG WEEK OF BOXING IN JULY

Network Delivers Iron Mike Productions Event From Miami For First Time Ever
New York, NY - FOX Sports teams with former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson's Iron Mike Productions for the first time on Thursday, July 10 (10:00 PM ET) on FOX Sports 1 and FOX Deportes creating an impressive week of boxing, as Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Live! delivers a pair of bouts on Wednesday, July 9 (10:00 PM ET).

"Our commitment to the sweet science is stronger than ever and we're excited to deliver boxing fans back-to-back nights of fights," said FOX Sports SVP, Programming, Research & Content Strategy Patrick Crakes.

Golden Boy's Wednesday night fights, live from the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, feature former world title contender Alfonso Gomez (23-6-2, 12 KOs) battling Ed Paredes (35-3-1, 23 KOs) in a 10-round junior middleweight main event.  Additionally, Oscar De La Hoya's cousin competes, as 19-year-old phenom Diego De La Hoya (5-0, 4 KOs) brings his boxing pedigree to the ring against U.S. Olympian Joseph Diaz Jr. (10-0, 7 KOs).

On Thursday night, Iron Mike Productions makes its FOX Sports debut with three thrilling matchups, including a main-event IBF Junior Lightweight Championship bout.  Argenis Mendez (21-2-1, 11 KOs) makes his third title defense and looks to redeem himself following a lackluster performance in his first fight with Rances Barthelemy (19-0, 13 KOs). In that fight, Barthelemy knocked Mendez out in a controversial finish to end the 2nd round. The Minnesota Combat Sports Commission later ruled that the knockout took place after the bell, overturning the original ruling that Barthelemy won by knockout.

In the co-main event, No. 3 ranked light heavyweight fighter Humberto Savigne (12-1, 9 KOs) takes on a top contender to be named at a later date.  Additionally, FOX Sports 1 showcases one of the sport's most popular young fighters in Erickson Lubin (5-0, 5 KOs), who fights in his first 8-round bout in the welterweight division.

Hall of Fame boxing commentator Colonel Bob Sheridan calls the action from Miami on FOX Sports 1 alongside former IBF light middleweight champion and Raul Marquez.  Tyson appears on the broadcast prior to the Thursday bouts.  Meanwhile, former WBC featherweight champion and WBO World Super Bantamweight champion, Daniel Ponce de Leon joins Mauricio Cardenas to call the action for FOX Deportes.

VERONA, N.Y. (June 6, 2014) - In an ESPN Friday Night Fights main event on International Boxing Hall of Fame induction weekend, featuring a pair of fighters celebrating their 33rdbirthdays tonight, 2004 Olympic silver medalist Yudel Jhonson (16-1, 9 KOs) captured the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) and North American Boxing Association (NABA) by winning a unanimous 10-round unanimous decision (97-91 X3) over  former Mexican champion Norberto "Demonio" Gonzalez (20-4, 13 KOs).

The entertaining top-to-bottom show was presented by Iron Mike Productions (IMP) at Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, New York.

Supporting promoter Mike Tyson at tonight's fights were world champions Oscar de la Hoya, Andre Ward, Zab Judah, Felix "Tito" Trinidad, Leona Brown and actress/boxing fan Rosie Perez.

"It was a great night, I'm very proud," Tyson remarked. "This was better than our first show here and the next time will be even better.  It's all about consistency.  We saw some great fighters tonight and the fans were great, too.  These guys make me look good, I'm honored.

"Oscar and Andre saw some good fights. There's nothing better than hearing that from my peers.  I'm really proud of Sammy.  He's an entertainer. I'd like to bring him back to Pittsburgh to fight Paul Spadafora, who is a great fighter.  That will be a big fight."

Jhonson, a stylist Cuban southpaw living in Miami, boxed his way to victory, decking Gonzalez with a short left in the fifth, buckling him in the sixth, and dropping him with a left in the ninth round.

"At the moment with my team, my managers and promoters," Jhonson said after the fight, "I'm here to fight the top junior middleweights in the world and I proved that tonight.  I'm looking for my world title shot.  I'd like a rematch with Willie Nelson, to fight Ishe Smith, or any of the world champions.  I'm open to fighting quality fighters to get my world title."

Red-hot welterweight Sammy "The Who Can Mexican" Vasquez, Jr. (15-0, 11 KOs) proved once again why he's one of the most fan friendly fighters in boxing.  In the ESPN co-feature, the aggressive southpaw from Monessen, PA attacked like the Iraq War veteran he is, dropping "Smokin'" Jay Krupp (17-7, 8 KOs) in each of the first three rounds, after which referee Benji Estevez halted the action at the 1:19 mark.

"For my fans out there, the soldiers and family, it was an honor fighting on ESPN," Vasquez commented.  "I want to thank IMP and my father for getting me here.  I thought it was a B performance.  I made a couple of errors but did what I needed to do."

A star was born in the ESPN FNF opener as heavy-handed middleweight sensation Ievgin "The Ukrainian Lion" Khytrov (5-0, 5 KOs) stepped up in class against dangerous Chris Chatman (12-4-1, 5 KOs) and passed the test with flying colors.  After a "feeling out" opening round, the 2012 Ukraine Olympian went to work, battering a game Chatman until a powerful, short left hook ended the fight in the third round.

Khytrov destoyed Chatman

Khytrov, now living in Brooklyn, recently signed a contract with IMP and is co-promoted by Fight Promotions, Inc.  "The advice of my corner for the first round was to feel-out my opponent without showing much offense to see how things would go and let my opponent work." Khytrov said after the fight.  "I was the left hook was there from the first round but I waited a little until the left hook would be more effective.  I had the straight right, left hook set-up from the first round."

Detroit light heavyweight Isiah Thomas (13-0, 6 KOs) remained unbeaten, blanking (80-72 X 3) Pittsburgh veteran Rayco "War" Saunders (23-24-2, 10 KOs) for an eight-round decision.

Charlotte junior welterweight John Williams (12-3-1, 5 KOs) upset Johnny Garcia (19-2, 11 KOs) by way of an eighth-round split decision (77-75, 77-75, 76-76) for the vacant WBC Latino title.

IMP's promising prospect Dennis Galarza (4-0-2 KOs), of Miami, kept his unbeaten record intact, consistently connecting with effective combinations for a six-round unanimous decision (60-54 X 3) over Chicago junior lightweight Gadiel Andaluz (4-7, 2 KOs)

Former standout amateur Ryan "Blue Chip" Martin (6-0, 3 KOs), who is promoted byCurtis "50 Cent" Jackson, outclassed Brooklyn lightweight Ian James (2-8-1, 1 KO) en route to a unanimous four-round decision (60-54 X 3).

Popular junior welterweight Sam Quinones, Jr. (7-2, 2 KOs), fighting out of York, PA, also pitched a complete shutout over Greg Coverson, Jr. (3-9-3, 2 KOs), winning six rounds by identical scores of 60-54 on all three

Detroit light heavyweight Leo Hall (2-0, 2 KOs) needed only 49-seconds to knockout Bob Wilder (2-4, 1 KO), dropping him with a vicious left kook.

Press Conference Quotes

Mike Tyson:  "I'm looking forward to setting (viewing) records again tomorrow night.  We have exciting fights, better than the first time we were here (last August on ESPN in first IMP promoted show) with Yudel Jhonson fighting Norberto Gonzalez in the main event, war veteran Sammy Vasquez coming off his sensational first round knockout, and 4-0 Ukrainian Ievgin Khytrov fighting for us for the first time."

"Sammy comes to kick ass."

"This place (Turning Stone) wasn't here when I fought.  I love coming here.  Some of my high school and junior high fans - I haven' seen some of them in 30 years - are coming here tomorrownight to watch the fights with me.  I really looking forward to these fights."

Yudel Jhonson:  "I want to thank everybody and for Iron Mike Productions for putting me on in the main event on ESPN.  I know what style fans like to see and I'm going to give my most to please them."

"There's no pressure.  I had more 400 plus amateur fights and that prepared me for this kind of fight.  No nerves, just another day at the office."

Norberto Gonzalez:  "I want to thank the great Mike Tyson for the opportunity to be on his card. I'm going to give 100-percent to make the main event very exciting."

"I feel no presser coming in as an underdog.  I come from the country where boxing started, Mexico.  Yudel Jhonson is going to fight one of the toughest 154-pounders and that makes for a great fight.

Sammy Vasquez:  "I want to thank IMP for the opportunity to fight on this card.  I have a lot of will; hard work and determination.  I'm fighting to showcase my skills.  You'll see what I bring to the table on the way to me being world champion."

"Fighting and war are two different type of things.  In boxing, you're going to walk away; in war, you don't know if you're coming back.  They're similar but different.  You need to be mentally prepared for both.  Boxing-wise, I'm mentally prepared to beat anybody.  No nerves, I'm going to have fun and put on a good show for fans.

"In my last fight (April 18 in Monroeville, PA) there was a little trash talking.  He (Juan Rodriquez, Jr.) kept talking about me, bashing me.  I had to put him down.  I talk with my hands and showed him in the first 30 seconds (first of three knockdowns en route to WTKO 1 at 2:49 for Vasquez).  I know what I do and that's look for a knockout."

Ievgin Khytrov:  "I'm very happy to have signed a co-promotional deal with Iron Mike Productions.  I just want to fight.  I'm looking forward to putting on good show."

"I had over 500 amateur fights so I've been in this pressure situation before.  It's just another day in the office for me."

Chris Chatman:  "I want to thank Mr. Tyson and Iron Mike Productions for having me fight on this great show.  Once again Chris Chatman is against the odds fighting and undefeated prospect. I've been here before.  He's one-dimensional.  He's going to put me on the ropes and knock me out.  That's not oing to happen.  You're going to see one helluva show."

"I went to college and was in the Navy."

Kings of the Ring: A Conversation with Mike Tyson & Larry Holmes

ESPN logo     IMP logo
           ESPN FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHTS
June 6, 2014   *   Turning Stone Resort Casino, Verona, NY

VERONA, NY (June 4, 2014) -- Turning Stone hosted "Kings of the Ring: A Conversation with Mike Tyson and Larry Holmes" today to promoted this week's ESPN Friday Night Fights (see fact sheet below), promoted by Iron Mike Productions, at the resort casino in upstate New York.

Longtime sports columnist for the Syracuse Post-Standard and Syracuse.com, Bud Poliguin, served as the moderator, asking the two Hall of Famers and world heavyweight champions a series of questions, before the floor was opened for the many fans in attendance to ask Tyson and Holmes questions.

Here are some of the highlights:

Poliguin opened by noting Tyson and Holmes had a combined career record of 119-12, including a total of 44 world title fights between them.

In 1988, Tyson, 21, stopped Holmes, 38, in the fourth round in Atlantic City for the WBC, WBA and IBF heavyweight titles

Holmes:  "What I remember was Don King knocking at my door around 9 at night.  I was retired two years. Don said he wanted me to fight somebody he said he knew I could beat. I asked him who and he said, Mike Tyson.  I said I can't beat Mike Tyson. Don said, what if I give you 3 ½ million dollars, and I said: 'Where's Mike at?' I'm just glad he didn't kill me.  He knocked me down a few times but I didn't feel it because the first time he hit me I was numb.  After the fight Mike said he loved me and I said, 'Why'd you knockout my ass?' Mike's a great guy."

Tyson:  "It was a great opportunity to be in the ring with one of the great fighters of all time.  It was a milestone in my career.  He didn't have time to prepare.  I never fought the great Larry Holmes.  I had no delusions; by all means, I didn't fight the Holmes who fought Ali.

"I was very objective in the ring, nothing personal, but I'd have hit my mother.  If I had mercy on him, he may have knocked my ass out.  He didn't have enough time to prepare when he fought me.  Don didn't give him the opportunity."

Holmes:  "I'm glad Mike beat me that day or else I'd have nothing to talk about."

Highlight fight of their respective careers

HOLMES:  "Kenny Norton because so many people said I couldn't do it, my legs were too small, and I was just a copy of Muhammad Ali.  But I did the work and had the dedication."

TYSON:  "Buster Douglas.  I needed that fight to make me a better person and fighter and have a broader perspective of myself and boxing."

Concussions in boxing

TYSON: "I'm sure I had some concussions.  When I signed my pro contract at 17 there was an unwritten clause that it was possible that you'd die.  We knew and saw it but didn't think it could happen to us."

HOLMES:  "I never thought it would happen to me.  My style was to move here and there.  I didn't get hit hard too often.  Mike knocked me down, I got up, I thought the next was a slip, and he knocked me down again.  I thought I'd get up and hit him with an uppercut but my arm got caught in the rope.  I got hit hard by Ernie Shavers, too."

TYSON:  "That was a feat of strength.  He looked like he got shot by a shotgun. It was amazing.

HOLMES:  "I was amazed, too."

Tyson as a promoter and a fighter to watch Friday night

TYSON:  "We have a young kid from Pittsburgh, Sammy Vasquez.  He's a sensational fighter and a war veteran.  We've promoted two shows on ESPN and one on ShoBox.  In those three we either tied or broke the record for viewers.  I'm grateful to be on ESPN again."

Favorite Boxing Movie

HOLMES:  "Rocky, the first one, but I don't like the guy playing him."

TYSON:  "Raging Bull."

Sport they would have been in if not boxers

TYSON: "Just a fighter, I never wanted to be anything but a fighter."

HOLMES: "Fighter.....and running back for the Dallas Cowboys."
