An Inspiring Group of Future American Leaders Set to Take the Ring at the Veterans Day Boxing Spectacular onNovember 8 at Foxwoods Resort Casino

(MASHANTUCKET, CONN.) - The athletes taking the ring for the 2014 Veterans Day Boxing Spectacular presented by Columbia Dental possess more than just athletic skill. The bout line-up on November 8 at Foxwoods Resort Casino will feature many of the United States' brightest minds competing in honor of United States' veterans. The 22 boxers taking part in the event include aspiring engineers, foreign diplomats, world-renowned physicians and military officers.
 

Boxers from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point will compete in 10 of the 11 bouts on the night with reigning National Collegiate Boxing Association champion Cappy Polou (West Point, N.Y./ Faga'itua, American Samoa) leading the Army team in to action at Foxwoods. An aspiring military officer, Polou began boxing only two years ago and cites the warrior ethos of the sport as his reason for taking up the sweet science.
 

The reigning NCBA team champion Army Black Knights roster boasts many bright stars. In addition to the four engineering majors on the West Point team, the squad possesses athletes with goals that include becoming a Rhodes scholar, pursuing a career in Army special operations, and leading an infantry platoon.
 

Two-time NCBA champion Taylor Tennyson (Virginia Beach, Va.) will headline the U.S. Coast Guard Academy squad on November 8. Tennyson, who is pursuing a career in Coast Guard Law Enforcement, enjoyed tremendous success in his previous appearance at Foxwoods last year. He not only won the 175-pound national title, but was also named Outstanding Boxer of the Tournament in the 2013 National Collegiate Boxing Association Championships at the Fox Theater.

The impressive student athletes on the West Point squad aren't the only leaders taking the ring in the Veterans Day Boxing Spectacular. The boxers on the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and U Mass/Westover Air Force Base teams have inspiring goals outside the ring as well.  A future pediatric surgeon, foreign services officer, novelist, and foreign diplomat are among the athletes slated to take the ring on November 8 at the Fox Theater.
 

Six boxers from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, five athletes from the UMass /Westover Air Force boxing team and one Connecticut high school student will join the 10 West Point athletes in the event honoring United States' servicemen and women.

New York, NY (September 30, 2014) – Junior Middleweight boxer Boyd Melson and Christan Zaccagnino, founders of Team Fight to Walk, are proud to announce their organization will host the second annual “Fighting for the Cure” benefit gala Thursday, October 16 at 6:15 pm in the Beckwith Pointe in New Rochelle, NY.

In May 2013, Team Fight to Walk held their inaugural fundraiser at BB King Blues Club in Time Square that featured a special act by world renowned comedian Artie Lange along with heartfelt speeches from Boyd Melson, Dr. Wise Young, former Rutgers football player Eric LeGrand, Christan Zaccagnino and boxer/cancer survivor Danny Jacobs. Last year’s event raised $100,000 towards a clinical trial and research of Chronic Spinal Cord Injuries.

 

Since meeting at a social event in 2002 while he was atWest Point, Melson’s dedicated much of his life to helping Zaccagnino. At ten years old, Zaccagnino became paralyzed from the neck down following a diving accident. Since turning pro in 2010, Melson’s donated 100% of his purses from 15 of his 16 matches towards Spinal Cord Injury Research through Justadollarplease.org and Team Fight to Walk, 501c3 charities. Melson and Zaccagnino’s story has received a significant amount of national attention, as the two have been featured on HBO Real Sports, ESPN.com, Sports Illustrated, Yahoo, NY1 and various newspapers.

 

They also recruited a team of boxers to support the cause either by donating or promoting. The fighters include world champion Demetrius Andrade, former titlists Steve Cunningham and Austin Trout, 2008 Olympian Shawn Estrada and contender Will Rosinsky amongst many others. Even with all of the hard work and tireless efforts, Team Fight to Walk must still raise a significant amount of money before they can move forward with the trial that could changes the lives of hundreds of thousands of people.

 

On the 16^th, guests will get to see performances by comedians Gilbert Gottfried, Jayson Cross and Damon Rozier. Former New York Knicks star Anthony Mason, world champion boxers Danny Jacobs and Demetrius Andrade, former champion Junior Jones and unbeaten contender Frank Galarza will all be on hand throughout the evening to support the cause and spend time with ticketholders. This special event also has a blackjack table, silent auction, DJ, live music, open bar and guest speakers throughout the evening. Dave Diamante, voice of the Brooklyn Nets, will emcee the “Fighting for the Cure” gala.

 

“I’ve seen the way the world positively reacts to certain causes through social media and there are a lot of people out there that need help with different issues,” said Melson. “I’m calling not only on the boxing world but the general public to help in whatever way they can with Team Fight to Walk and our “Fighting for the Cure” gala. Our 2013 gala was a great success and we need to top donations in 2014 in order to potentially change the lives of hundreds of thousands of Americans suffering from Chronic Spinal Cord Injuries. "BREATHE FOR CALEY" FUNDRAISER  HOSTED BY THE GHOST RAISES OVER $15,000 GILROY, CA (April 7, 2014) - This past Sunday Robert Guerrero's "Breath for Caley" fundraising event successfully raised over $15,000 for Caley Camarillo a 12-year old girl who is suffering from a rare and terminal lung disease called cystic fibrosis (commonly referred to as CF). The money raised will help out with medical expenses. "I'm very happy with the turnout yesterday as our local community and neighboring communities came out to support this event and help Caley and her family," said Robert Guerrero. World Champs Elcock And Oakey Get Behind Marston Ahead Of March 1st Title Fight

Former World Champions Wayne Elcock and Tony Oakey know a thing or two about winning Championships, so when they met up with Marianne Marston last weekend, at the TRAD TKO Boxing Gym in association with the World Boxing Union, Charity Boxing Event in aid of the Indee Rose Trust, they were quick to pass on some advice and voice their support to the TRAD TKO fighter, ahead of her World Boxing Union European title clash with Hana Horakova, which takes place at York Hall in Bethnal Green, London this coming Saturday.

Wayne, who besides being WBU Middleweight World Champion in 2003, holds various championships including the WBF International title, which he won in September 2006, with a sixth round stoppage of Scotland’s Vinnie Baldassara.

Just three month’s later Wayne beat Steven Bendall, with an eighth round stoppage finish, to secure the English title, before taking on and beating Howard Eastman in September 2007 to add the Lonsdale belt to his collection.

Stepping back onto the World scene in December 2007, Wayne unsuccessfully challenged Arthur Abraham for the iconic IBF orange belt.

Back in domestic action six months later, Wayne once again secured the British Middleweight title, which he unsuccessfully defended against Matthew Macklin in March 2009.

Almost immediately after the headlining ‘sparring session’ with Tony Oakey last Saturday, the amiable Brummie was the quick to extend his congratulations, as well as pass on some advice, to Marianne.

“This is a massive fight for Marianne, the European title, let’s be honest it’s a very valued title, it’s a high title to have you know let’s be honest, being European Champion is massive in itself, win this one and obviously it’s a stepping stone for the World.

I don’t know much about Marianne’s opponent, but know she’s ranked higher than Marianne so is going in the favourite, she may be the underdog but I’m really hoping Marianne’ll win it.

She’s got to focus, she’s got to pull the job off, it’s the greatest feeling ever, it’s massive when you win you’re first title.

At the end of the day, I’m looking forward to it, seeing Marianne fight, hopefully she’ll win the European and go on to capture the WBU World title in the future.”

Tony has an equally impressive Championship record, having secured the World Boxing Union Light Heavyweight crown in 2002, before going on to successfully defend it three times before finally losing the coveted accolade to Matthew Barney, by split decision, in October 2003.

Like Wayne, besides the WBU World title, Tony first secured the Southern Area strap in March 2001, just two months later added the Commonwealth title to his collection, two superb defenses later moving on to the aforementioned WBU World Championship campaign.

It would be 2007 before another Championship belt adorned the Oakey family trophy cabinet, this time the Lonsdale belt, which he successfully defended before passing on the coveted accolade to Dean Francis in 2008.

Tony then went on to win the Prizefighter Light Heavyweight title in February 2009, before adding the International Masters title four months later.

Tony unsuccessfully challenged for both the English and British Masters titles before retiring in May 2010.

Following photos with Marianne and her coach Brian O’Shaughnessy, Tony, who has known Marianne a while, having trained alongside each other at the TRAD TKO in the past, also was quick to voice support for his former gym mate.

“I’m really pleased for Marianne, she deserves this, she’s always in the gym.

I just said to her, take this with both hands, opportunities like this don’t come along too often, so make the most of it and come out of the ring knowing you gave everything.

That’s one of the things about the TKO, we’ve got loads of belts, but can always do with another one.”
