Rainone Wants to Have His Birthday Cake and Eat it Too!

Today being his 35th birthday and having just weighed in at a rough-and-ready 146.8 lbs. for his showdown against Dusty Hernandez-Harrison (24-0, 13 KOs), you would think that Long Island, New York's Tommy "The Razor" Rainone (22-5-1, 4 KOs) would want a victory over Harrison for his birthday gift.

Wrong. "I want to eat!!!" said a hungry Rainone, after stepping off the scale.

Rainone and Harrison (24-0, 13 KOs) will meet 10-round main-event showdown on music superstar Jay Z's Roc Nation Sports debut boxing card tomorrow (Friday, January 9), at Madison Square Garden Theater in New York City and live on FOX Sports 1 (10PM ET/7PM PT).

"Eating like a normal person again after this long training camp," is my gift to myself," continued Rainone. "Beating Hernandez-Harrison tomorrow night? That'll be my birthday cake!"

Also featured on the card at MSG is, Rainone's GCP stable mate, Cecile McCalla, of Randallstown, Maryland, who will face South African southpaw Chris "The Heat" van Heerden (21-1-1, 11 KOs) for the IBF International Welterweight Championship.

McCalla Confident Heading into van Heerden Showdown this Friday

"It's the biggest opportunity I've had, but in my mind, it's just another fight," says undefeated welterweight Cecil McCalla (20-0, 7 KOs).

The easy-going McCalla, a Randallstown, Maryland, native, will face South African southpaw Chris "The Heat" van Heerden (21-1-1, 11 KOs) for the IBF International Welterweight Championship this Friday, January 9, at Madison Square Garden Theater in New York City and live on FOX Sports 1 (10PM ET/7PM PT).

McCalla vs. van Heerden will serve as the main supporting bout to fan favorite New Yorker Tommy Rainone (22-5-1, 4 KOs) taking on unbeaten Dusty Hernandez-Harrison (24-0, 13 KOs) on music superstar Jay Z's Roc Nation Sports debut boxing card, entitled "Throne Boxing."

If McCalla is feeling the pressure before the biggest fight of his boxing career, he's hiding it well. But the 29-year-old has already proven himself a clutch player. He was scheduled to fight van Heerden last July until van Heerden pulled out with an injury two weeks before the fight. Despite having spent his entire training camp preparing for a southpaw, McCalla agreed to fight orthodox fighter Oscar Godoy (then 13-2) on short notice and won a dominant unanimous decision.

"I feel like that opponent (Godoy) is a little tougher than this guy van Heerden," continued the confident McCalla. "He (van Heerden) is a southpaw from South Africa and a pretty rough pressure fighter, but I won't have any problems with him. I used to spar Paul Williams before I even turned pro and he's a lot stronger than this guy."

If McCalla sounds supremely confident, it's because he has a secret weapon from across the ocean on his side.

"I trained for my fight in the UK," explained McCalla. "My manager, Camero Mercer, knew a trainer named Lee Beard, and told me I should go over there and work with him. I decided to give it a shot two summers ago and I've been going there to train for every fight since then. Lee knows his stuff."

McCalla says the improvements from working with Beard, best known for his work with Ricky and Matthew Hatton, have been incredible. "I felt like I was getting caught too much before and it's made a very big difference in working with Lee. He's hard to please and he pays close attention to everything. I like him."

Happy with the opportunities afforded him by his promoter, Greg Cohen of Greg Cohen Promotions, McCalla says a victory over van Heerden will put him exactly where he wasnts to be.

"Greg Cohen does a great job for me and I'm happy with where I am as far as opportunities coming my way. And I'll start getting better fights after this victory and that will put me in the mix with the Andre Bertos and Keith Thurmans and guys like that. Hopefully I'll be world champion sometime this year. This is my year!"

UNDEFEATED WBO LIGHT WELTERWEIGHT CHAMPION CHRIS ALGIERI TO CALL THE PALAZZO® LAS VEGAS HOME FOR TRAINING CAMP IN PREPARATION FOR FIGHT AGAINST MANNY PACQUIAO

LAS VEGAS, NV (October 17, 2014) - Beginning October 19, undefeated light welterweight world champion Chris Algieri will begin training at The Palazzo for his upcoming fight against Fighter of the Decade and defending WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao. Algieri will train in a custom gym at The Palazzo through November 13 and is giving boxing fans the ultimate opportunity - the chance to watch training sessions.

"The Palazzo has rolled out the red carpet for me," said boxer Chris Algieri. "From the custom training room to the accommodations, I feel completely at home here and I know this training camp will prepare me for the upcoming bout against [Manny] Pacquaio at The Venetian Macao on November 22."

On Tuesday nights while Algieri is training The Palazzo, fans will be able to hear how training is going when he speaks with The Palazzo's very own Ken Thomson on Yahoo! Sports Radio from 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The broadcast is live from Lagasse's Stadium, giving fans an opportunity to catch a glimpse of Algieri outside of training.

On Saturdays fans will get an inside look when the doors to Algieri's training camp are open to the public from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Algieri (20-0, 8 KOs), from Huntington, New York, on Long Island, has become boxing's No. 1 story, as well as being hailed as the 21st century real-life Rocky. Over the last 22 months, Algieri, a former kickboxing champion, has elevated himself from a prospect to a world-class contender to a world champion.

After accumulating significant victories over top prospect Jose Alejo, former USBA champion Mike Arnaoutis, and highly-rated contender Emmanuel Taylor, Algieri, stepped up in his HBO® debut and challenged WBO junior welterweight champion "The Siberian Rocky" Ruslan Provodnikov on June 14. Despite suffering two knockdowns in the first round which closed his swollen right eye, Algieri, who entered the fight as a 5-1 underdog, eschewed the natural instinct to panic and resolutely stuck to his game plan, expertly using his jab and supreme athletic ability to pick apart the defending champion to claim a split decision victory and the world title.

The live, first-time airing of the fight on HBO averaged 1.1 million viewers placing it among the most-viewed fights on cable this year. In what could be a first for any professional boxer, Algieri used his purse from the Provodnikov bout to pay off his student loans. He is as much a scholar as he is a brawler. Algieri graduated from Stony Brook University with Honors in 2007 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Care Management and then went on to receive his Master's degree in Clinical Nutrition from the New York Institute of Technology. He aspires to attend medical school.

The Clash in Cotai II: Pacquiao vs Algieri was announced in August 2014 with a 27,273-mile international media tour that began at The Venetian Macao and included a stop at The Venetian Las Vegas. Manny Pacquiao will defend his World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title against Algieri, the undefeated WBO junior welterweight champion. Promoted by Top Rank® and Sands China Ltd., in association with MP Promotions, Joe DeGuardia's Star Boxing, Banner Promotions, Foreman Boys Promotions, and Tecate, the world welterweight championship event will take place on Sunday, November 23 (Saturday, November 22, in the U.S.) at The Venetian Macao's Cotai Arena.

The Venetian and The Palazzo Las Vegas will be the only resorts on the Las Vegas Strip broadcasting the fight live. With a viewing party in the Palazzo Ballroom, as well as Lagasse's Stadium - The Venetian and The Palazzo will be the only place for fight fans to be on November 22. For more information and to purchase tickets, please go to Venetian.com or call the box office at 866-641-7469.

Tevin Farmer to take on Dominic Coca on Saturday night in Springfield, Virginia

Philadelphia (October 7, 2014) -This Saturday night at the ABC Sports Complex in Springfield, Virginia, rising Featherweight Tevin "The American Idol" Farmer will look for his 10th consecutive victory when he takes on Dominick Coca (8-9, 2 KO's) from Watts, California in an 8-round bout.

The 24 year-old Farmer has a record of 16-4-1 with three knockouts has been training hard for this fight against the veteran Coca.

"Everything is good.  I am just unwinding and getting on weight as well as staying sharp," said the Philadelphia native.

Farmer will be relying on his skills as he does not know much about the 17 fight veteran.

"I do not know anything about him.  The first I heard of him was when my manager Mark Cipparone told me about him.  I do not need to look at him.  I trust my manager and trainer's decisions."

It's been a complete 180 degree turn for Farmer as he is now going into fights expected to win.

"I have always had my mind set to go in there and win.  I did not have the right backing but over the course of the last 10 fights that has changed.  I have a great support system and that has made the world of a difference.  That being said, nothing has changed as I always feel pressure to perform."

With the winning streak and now an impressive record, Farmer hopes to be competing with the top guys at 126 and 130 pounds.

"In the next 6 to 9 months, I would like to be competing for a world title.  I am ready to step in with top competition.  I was not babied on my way up, so after a couple of more wins, I will be ready for a big opportunity."

"October 11 will be great.  I am in tremendous shape and expect an impressive victory.", finished Farmer.

" I'm always excited and confident whenever Tevin steps into that ring. He has done everything that a manager could ask of his fighter and more. Tevin is always in the gym, always in shape, and always ready to fight. That might be something you can find in your travels, but what makes Tevin special aside from his work ethic is that he is one very talented fighter. I have witnessed his growth over his last 9 fights and he gets better every single time he steps into that ring. It doesn't matter if you are a boxer or a banger or both, one thing for sure Tevin Farmer has a way of making some very talented fighters look bad. Yesterday, Tevin was a diamond in the rough but today "The American Idol" stands out not because of some type of luck or alignment of the stars... but simply because of all that made him who he has become...a superstar in the making!", said Farmer's manager and Club 1957 CEO Mark Cipparone.

Club 1957 Management was founded in 2013 by local businessman Mark Cipparone.  Cipparone is the owner of the widely successful and popular Rocco's Collision.  Since the formation of Club 1957 Management he has guided the careers of some the top fighters in the country.  Currently he manages Heavyweight Joey Dawejko, Jr. Middleweight Tyrone Brunson, Welterweight Raymond Serrano, Bantamweight Miguel Cartegena, Jr. Lightweight Tevin Farmer and Jr. Lightweight Jason Sosa.

WEBSTER AND DOWNEY EACH PREDICT VICTORYTHIS SATURDAY IN LEWISTON

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Lewiston, Maine (October 7, 2014) –New England Fights (NEF), America's number-one regional fight promotion, will present its inaugural boxing event this Saturdaynight, October 11, 2014 at the historic Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston, Maine.  It will be the first professional boxing event in Lewiston in more than ten years and the first in the building, famous for the Muhammad Ali-Sonny Liston World Heavyweight Title rematch of May 1965, in close to twenty years.  A four-round light-heavyweight contest on the card will see Portland, Maine's John Webster meeting John Downey.

46-year old John Webster is a product of the Portland Boxing Club. He last competed as a professional boxer in September 2004, coincidentally the last professional boxing event in Lewiston before this coming Saturday night.  While it has been ten years since the last time he walked the aisle to the ring, Webster retains the fire that earned him a 9-6-1 record with six wins coming by way of knockout.  He predicts victory this Saturday night over Downey.

"I expect a tough fight," stated Webster.  "I expect him to try to come out and knock me out. He's not going to get it, but I expect him to be tough and coming at me.  My training has been excellent. I train very hard with a lot of time and effort. A lot of people have helped support me and I'm going to produce for all of the Maine fans and myself.  I predict that I will win the fight, either by KO or decision. I'm prepared for four rounds, but if the knockout comes I'll take it. I'm planning on a tough fight that ends with my hands up.  Anyway you look at it, I see this fight ending with my hands raised in victory. John Downey, I hope you did your homework, cause I've done mine."

Downey, of Hull, Massachusetts, is no stranger to the Lewiston-Auburn area.  His father lives in Lewiston, and the bout will be an opportunity for Downey to fight in front of his father close to his own home.  Downey currently trains at Cappiello Brothers Boxing and Fitness in Brockton, Massachusetts.  Rich Cappiello, who will be in Downey's corner, helped guide Kevin McBride to his 2005 shocking upset over Mike Tyson.  Downey will look to play the role of "spoiler" for Webster's comeback fight, and Downey also predicts a victory for himself this Saturday night.

"It's nice to have someone in there older than me as an opponent," joked Downey when reached for comment. "We'll find out if he can still compete.  I've been in with heavier hitters than him including Russell Lamour, the New England Middleweight Champion from Maine. I think he's underestimating me.  It's either going to go all four or John Webster is going down in the first round. I'm ready to go the distance or take him out early if he can't take it.  My plan is to take him out. I'm going to both box smart and come right at him.  He should know that I'll be coming at him and it'll be that way the whole fight so he better be ready.  Good luck John Webster. Much respect, but be ready 'cause I'm coming."

"NEF BOXING" takes place this Saturday, October 11, 2014 at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston, Maine.  Tickets start at just $25 and are on sale now at www.TheColisee.com or by calling the Colisee box office at 207.783.2009 x 525.  For more information on the event and fight card updates, please visit the promotion’s website at www.NewEnglandFights.comIn addition, you can watch NEF fight videos at www.youtube.com/NEFMMA, follow the promotion on Twitter @nefights and join the official Facebook group “New England Fights.”

BERRY ON OCTOBER 11 TITLE FIGHT IN LEWISTON: "YOU'RE GONNA SEE A TITLE COMING HOME TO WEST FORKS"

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Lewiston, Maine (October 3, 2014) –New England Fights (NEF), America's number-one regional fight promotion, will present its inaugural boxing event on October 11, 2014 at the historic Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston, Maine. It will be the first professional boxing event in Lewiston in more than ten years and the first in the building, famous for the Muhammad Ali-Sonny Liston World Heavyweight Title rematch of May 1965, in close to twenty years.  The main event of the evening will feature undefeated Brandon "The Cannon" Berry (7-0) in a six-round bout for the Northeast Junior Welterweight Championship against West Virginia Toughman Champion Eric Palmer (4-3-3). Recently, Berry was the guest of NEF co-owner and matchmaker Matt Peterson on the NEF Podcast.

"My brother and I, and my father actually, were watching a fight on TV," recalled Berry of his introduction to the sport of boxing.  "We were watching it live.  I think it was in '94.  It was George Foreman and Michael Moorer.  It was Foreman's quest to get the title again.  I was too young to really have an opinion on who I thought might win or really know what was going on.  I was only six or seven years old.  That struck an interest with my brother.  He started watching all the Rocky films.  We had an old military duffle bag that we stuffed full of clothes.  We hung it up in a shed out back.  I say 'we,' but I was standing there watching mostly, in awe of my brother, looking up to him.  He got into it.  He had some amateur bouts.  From then on, I always wanted to be like him.  I looked up to him.  I got to start to love the sport and learn more about it and hang out in the gyms with him.  Years later, I think I was 18, I had my first amateur bout... All credit goes to my brother and father for getting me interested at an early age."

Berry currently trains at Wyman's Boxing Club in Stockton Springs, Maine.  The gym is owned and operated by veteran boxing trainer Ken "Skeet" Wyman who has been instrumental in Berry's development in the sport.  So strong is his tie to the gym that Berry makes the arduous journey of 125 miles each way from his home in West Forks, Maine to Stockton Springs three times a week to train. He credits his many fans, and his trainer and teammates with making that trip a worthwhile one.

"I had been around a couple gyms and I found a good home at Wyman's Boxing Club in Stockton Springs," said Berry.  "Skeet and I mesh really well together.  I think that the team behind us is amazing.  Just like any other fighter that's successful, they have a good background and a good support system and a good coaching staff.  It's just working out really well for me... What mainly drives me to continue making that trip is the support system that I have created with the fan base out of such a small area, I only have forty year-round residents, give or take, in my town, but we have hundreds and hundreds of people that are following me everywhere.  I'm beside myself when I think about the support I have grown this past year or two... If I stop now, I feel like I'd be letting down so many people, so many kids who are looking up to me."

Berry is the archetypical "small-town-boy-made-good."  He truly is the pride of West Forks, Maine, a small plantation of 47 residents (as of the 2000 census).  Berry's popularity  has snowballed over the course of his career, with hundreds of fans, from West Forks and beyond, following him to his fights in all corners of New England, many of them driving hours to watch the hometown hero fight.  His family owns and operates Berry's General Store in West Forks, which has proven to be a positive factor in Berry's self-promotional efforts.

"I think a lot of people look at me as a pretty respectable young guy," said Berry, "or at least I hope they do.  Having a family business has helped so much, because it's one of my biggest promotional aspects.  Hundreds and hundreds of people come through the store year-round and they see the posters of what's coming up next.  They see all the trophies in the trophy case and all the articles hanging up.  Then they see me behind the counter.  So, they look at the stories and they can relate to it because they get to meet me and shake my hand.  Or, they might have already known me and watched me grow up.  I've been in the store my whole life.  I used to stand on two milk crates to reach the cash register to take care of customers.  So, I've literally grown up there.  These people have watched me grow.  They've watched me turn into a fighter. They support it.  As far as the small town, getting them to back you, it wasn't hard.  It wasn't like I had to go out door to door and ask these people to support me... You don't have to ask them.  It's just there."

As someone who knows and respects the history of boxing, Berry realizes the unique opportunity he has in headlining a title fight on the return of professional boxing to Lewiston.  On October 11, he will take center stage on the very spot where Muhammad Ali and Sonny Liston fought their world title rematch in 1965.

"I feel very honored to be on this show in this building," exclaimed Berry.  "It brings back memories for me because I had met Muhammad Ali in Lewiston when he came back for the anniversary there... At that time, if you had told me, 'hey, someday you're gonna have a pro fight here,' I probably would've had a hard time believing that.  Now the time is coming where I'm in the same building where one of the most famous sports pictures ever took place, with him (Ali) standing over Liston, so it's pretty cool... The night of the fight, I'm gonna be thinking about that... It's an amazing feeling.  I'm very excited for it."

Before Berry stands Eric Palmer of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  Many boxing insiders are saying that this will, no doubt, be the biggest challenge Berry has faced to date as a professional.  With the Northeast Junior Welterweight Title up for grabs, Berry recognizes the importance of this fight on the future of his career.

"It's definitely the biggest fight of my pro career.  There's gonna be a winner and there's gonna be a loser.  I plan on going in and winning the fight.  I know anything can happen.  To win this, and to be called 'the new champion' and the 'northeast titleholder,' I think it's amazing.  I think it'll open up new doors for me.  I think it's an appropriate time in my career for this to happen... He (Palmer) looks like a pretty good little boxer.  From what I've read and heard, he's gonna be a tough opponent.  Obviously, he's my toughest opponent to date, on paper at least, as far as his record shows and his experience... I'm ready for whatever he brings to the table.  I'm sure it's gonna be a good fight... I don't think this fight's gonna go six rounds.  I'm not looking for a knockout, but I know how hard I've been training.  I think you're probably gonna see some type of a stoppage... I think you're gonna see a title coming home to West Forks."
