Dan Gable Museum to host women’s wrestling seminar

WATERLOO, Iowa—Two groundbreaking females will be part of a special introduction to women’s wrestling. The event will be hosted by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum on Saturday, August 11 at 3 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. 

Cassy Herkelman of Cedar Falls and Megan Black of Eddyville-Blakesburg will conduct a clinic inside the Dan Gable Teaching Center. Herkelman gained national attention in 2011 when she became the first female wrestler to qualify for the Iowa High School state wrestling tournament. Her first round opponent forfeited the match citing religious reasons.

Black also qualified for the 2011 state tournament, and she became the first female to place at the Iowa High School state wrestling tournament earlier this year. 

“I don’t know why we didn’t have women’s wrestling earlier,” said museum namesake Dan Gable. “Wrestling has been around forever. We haven’t utilized our full potential with women’s wrestling in Iowa yet. This introduction to women’s wrestling seminar will be a good start.”

The seminar includes comments from both Herkelman and Black along with a brief wrestling demonstration. Dustin Baynes, head wrestling coach of the Waldorf College women’s wrestling team, will also be in attendance.

Leigh Jaynes Leads Changes in Women's Performance Gear, Talks to Takedown!

First let me introduce you to U.S. Army Captain Leigh Jaynes. It's hard to become an Army captain at any age let alone at 31 years of age.

 

Women's wrestling needs strong competitors and leaders- Jaynes competes on behalf of the Army's World Class Athlete program. She is ranked #2 in women's freestyle at 59 kilos for USA Wrestling. Wrestling has made a difference in her life and now she wants to make a difference in wrestling.

Female Specific Singlet the Next Step for Women’s Wrestling

Women’s Freestyle Wrestling will be on display this summer at the 2012 London Games. The women’s portion of the Freestyle program began in Athens 2004 and has quickly gained an increase in support and interest pushing TV viewership higher than previous years. A greater emphasis has been placed on this athletic choice for girls and women thanks to the dedication of wrestling manufacturer Brute Wrestling. Brute Wrestling has placed a greater emphasis on female wrestling apparel for the upcoming season in hopes that greater steps can be taken to build women’s wrestling up to an equal level as their male counterparts. Brute has developed the first singlet designed specifically for women as part of their 2012 line of products. In working with people at Brute you can credit Leigh Jaynes for the new women's singlet called the Rogue AVT 2.   

Clearly she and the designers at Brute had a better idea.

Women's Wrestling needs promotion- Jaynes is also the lead "Chick" behind the new promotional web site called ChickWrestler.com. Although in its infancy its goals are admirable and timely. Women's wrestling has been growing across the country at all levels. There were only 5 colleges that offered the sport when Jaynes started to compete and now there are over 20 with more to come.

Call to action: It's time for more companies like Brute to invest in new technologies and equipment to better serve today's female athletes.
