Official statement from United States Judoka Nick Delpopolo After Testing Positive for Marijuana

"I would like to sincerely apologize to the U.S. Olympic Committee, USA Judo, my teammates, my fans, and everyone that has supported me throughout my Olympic journey. I'm sorry that I let you down. Judo is my life and competing in the Olympics has always been my dream. I would never intentionally do anything to jeopardize that.  I was in total disbelief when I was told by the IOC that my test results came back positive. After making frantic phone calls to friends and family following the results, a *family member confessed that the brownies she had baked (and that I had eaten a few weeks prior) contained marijuana.  I had no idea that I had ingested marijuana until that moment. I slept the entire four hour drive home the day I ate the brownie, but thought that I was just extremely tired from training and travel.  My family member sent a confession letter to the Olympic Committee immediately following the call.  Words cannot express how devastated and remorseful I am for making such a big mistake. Although my actions were not deliberate, I know that I let down the entire nation, and for that I am truly sorry.”

*The Delpopolo's would like to protect the identity of the family member that caused this unfortunate situation.

Please see the excerpt below from the letter that was sent by Delpopolo's family member to the Olympic Committee:

“…He had absolutely no idea that I dealt with marijuana at all, so it never would’ve crossed his mind. This is my entire fault. ...This was all a huge mistake. His hard work, and not only dedication to judo, but also being a good role model should not be down graded or punished for my selfishness and stupidity. I wish I could have thought of this possibility, but I couldn’t have imagined this ever happening. He is one of the best judoka and people you could ever want to meet, and by all means does not deal with any illegal substances.”

USA Judo Coach Jimmy Pedro: Team is Ready For Games Talks to Takedown Radio

FIGHT NEWS UNLIMITED IS SPONSORED BY: WWW.MILIFIDEL.COM
=====================================================

This is a special LIVE from the 2012 London Olympic Games audio interview brought to you by Zebra Mats and Cages.   Also enjoy a reprint of the Yahoo Sports story from July 26th 2012 below.

One of the U.S. judo coaches says the American team may have its best chance to win multiple medals at the London Olympics.

After the fight draw was announced Thursday, coach Jimmy Pedro said it was "a fairly decent" result for the U.S. and the chances of the country's best-ever finish in judo were realistic.

World No. 4 Kayla Harrison is a leading contender for gold in the women's 78-kilogram division.
Harrison will face a Russian opponent in the first round and could meet a Hungarian rival in the quarterfinals, whom Pedro described as an awkward fighter.

"That's Kayla's match to get into the money," Pedro said, predicting a medal finish if Harrison can get into the semifinals.

He said Harrison has been strategically training for how best to win against some of her Olympic opponents, like maintaining a dominant grip and being on the attack.

"As long as she sticks to the game plan, she has a good chance," he said.

Pedro said some of Harrison's teammates also could make it to the medals podium.

Nick Delpopolo, fighting in the 73-kilogram final, lucked out with his draw. He has a bye in the first round. If he makes it past his first opponent, he could face the No. 8 seed in the draw.

"Statistically speaking, that's the best seed to get," Pedro said, describing Delpopolo's possible matchup against the Belgian as "winnable."

Travis Stevens, fighting in the 81-kilogram division, seems to have the hardest path.

"He's got a worker's draw," Pedro said. "There's no one devastating, but they will be hard matches."

But Pedro said Stevens was a seasoned competitor and was optimistic about his chances.

For the entire team, Pedro said the best performance would be a gold plus another medal.

"It's a realistic possibility," he said. "We have two of the top eight seeds at the Olympics and for us, that's unprecedented."

Olympic Judo Player Ivo Dos Santos Shares his Final Pre-Olympics Blog

Hey guys, just wanted to share my final Pre-Olympic blog with you.

http://www.ivojudo.com/2012/07/23/this-is-it/

The build up to the Olympic Games has been four years, but for many like myself it has been a dream for a lot longer than that.
I'm hoping that my blogs have been able to raise the public's awareness of my path, Australian Judo and the sport of Judo itself.

If you could share this latest blog through your networks it would go a small way towards having Judo in the spotlight, where it deserves to be, once the Olympic Games commences.

Thanks

Ivo Dos Santos
