Champion Molina Staying Active in Chicago Community While Waiting for Next Big Fight

IBF Junior Middleweight Champion "King" Carlos Molina is making good on his promise to be a "people's champion", as he continues to interact with the public in his beloved Chicago while waiting for his next big fight. Last Friday at Curie High School on Chicago's Southwest side, Molina and WBA # 6 heavyweight "Fast" Fres Oquendo were guests of honor at Curie's annual Community Fall Festival. The pair signed autographs, posed for photos and spoke to young people about the importance of hard work. "This is an amazing event, and it feels really good to give back to my neighborhood. I am grateful for the invite," said Molina, who was raised and still lives minutes from Curie. Meanwhile, Molina (22-5-2, 6 KOs) has been staying active in the gym while fielding offers and challenges from a variety of big names including former champs "Sugar" Shane Mosley and Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, as well as recent title winner Demetrius Andrade. "I don't care who it is," said Molina. "I know everybody says that, but I mean it. I would like to bring boxing back to how it was in the old days with guys fighting all the time. Fighters fight and that's what I want to do. I'm ready to go." Molina, a true Cinderella story in boxing, says he'd rather be a champion who defends his belt with regularity than a PPV star fighting once yearly. "I want to be an old-school champion. I'll fight anybody. I want to be recognized as the best in my division and I feel like I am ready to go out and get victories over the top guys and unify the belts. Willie Nelson a Clear & Present Danger for Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez

LAS VEGAS (July 17, 2012)— On Saturday night, former three-time world champion Anthony Mundine scored a seventh round stoppage over former world champion Bronco McKart to make an emphatic statement in his American debut.

Mundine dropped McKart three times in the pivotal seventh round and with the win; Mundine becomes a major player in the packed Jr. Middleweight and Middleweight divisions.

The Cinco de Mayo weekend has traditionally been known to produce some of the biggest and most memorable fight weekends in the history of the sport. In years past, the holiday has seen Mexican greats Julio Cesar Chavez, Erik "El Terrible" Morales, Marco Antonio Barrera, Ricardo "Finito" Lopez and many others fight on Cinco de Mayo. Mexican-American superstar Oscar de la Hoya fought on the weekend four times including his first mega-fight when, as WBO Lightweight World Champion, he defeated IBF Lightweight Titlist Rafael Ruelas on May 6, 1995. Now it's Mexican sensation Canelo Alvarez's turn as he is featured in the May 5 co-main event against future Hall of Famer Sugar Shane Mosley.

The Cinco de Mayo celebration, while more of an American tradition, is observed in Mexico, primarily in the city of Puebla, and dates back to the significance of the 1862 Battle of Puebla. In one of the proudest moments in Mexican History, 167 poorly equipped soldiers in the small town of Puebla battled and defeated a much more powerful 4,000-strong French army from taking over their land.

The Battle of Puebla was a monumental point in Mexican history for at least two reasons. First, although considerably outnumbered, the Mexicans defeated a much better-equipped French army. Second, it was significant because since the Battle of Puebla, no country in the Americas has been invaded by a European military force. Molina: Forget Politics and Tricks. Fight Me Because You're True Champions

Tired of all the undeserved setbacks, controversial outcomes and political maneuvering he's suffered through in his career, top junior middleweight contender Carlos Molina says he wishes to appeal directly to other old-school boxers like himself.

"Everyone knows I'm the number-one contender in this division. I haven't legitimately lost, or even had a draw, in a fight since 2006. And the list of guys I beat in that time is the most impressive of any other contender in the top 10. What I want to say to the world champions at 154 lbs is this: don't hide behind rankings to avoid me. Fight me because I'm the true #1 contender and that's what an old-school champion would do."
