Jeter Defeats Lange to Win NABA USA Championship; Nelson Retains WIBA Belt in Dominating Affair

Fairfax, VA – Two years since their first rough-and-tumble affair that saw Tony Jeter upset Jimmy Lange in a controversial decision, the Maryland-based boxer once again defeated the popular Northern Virginia fan favorite in front of the Patriot Center crowd, earning a majority decision along with the North American Boxing Association’s USA middleweight belt. From the opening bell, the two ring warriors slugged it out for ten rounds, treating fans to another competitive battle But, it was once again Jeter, currently 17th rated by the World Boxing Council, using a steady stream of effective upper cuts, body punches and aggressive pursuit of Lange that helped him earn the victory.

In the Co-Main Event, Women’s International Boxing Association (WIBA) champion and local fan favorite, Tori Nelson, made her fourth successful WIBA title defense, besting Victoria Cisneros in a highly-entertaining affair that saw both fighters go toe-to-toe. While it took all ten rounds, and Cisneros put up a spirited defense, especially in the final round, Nelson swept all three judges’ cards to score a perfect victory.

Making his fourth Patriot Center appearance, former WBA Middleweight challenger Jonathan Reid met his match with Thomas Brown in a special attraction bout. The fight went the six-round distance, with Brown outpointing Reid, a Lange teammate from season one of “The Contender” series, to capture the unanimous decision.

Local, rising star Seth Billups put on a crowd-pleasing performance using an effective jab and impressive array of skills to defeat last-minute replacement Sean Lockhart by TKO.  After knocking down Lockhart in the first and second rounds, Billups kept the pressure going into the third before the referee stepped in and ended the contest.

Underdog Jess Noriega began quickly, taking the fight to Devar Ferhadi in the evening's third bout. The contest went back and forth for two rounds, while Ferhadi battered Noriega during the third round with some crushing body blows that led to a late-round knockdown. The bout ended when Noriega failed to answer the fourth round bell.

Former Washington Redskins linebacker Mike Balogun earned his second win by overwhelming pro-debuting Percy Womack. Womack tasted canvas early in the first round, before going down again and not making the 10-count to end the bout against the athletic Balogun who started boxing six months ago.

The first bout of the evening did not last long as Ray Terry knocked down Kevin Bartlett three times in the first round before referee Joe Cooper had seen enough and stopped the bout.

Q&A with Heavyweight Boxer Mike Balogun

Jimmy Lange Boxing - Nov. 15 - Patriot Center

We recently sat down with Mike Balogun, current heavyweight boxer and former NFL linebacker. The Upper Marlboro, MD-native recently made his pro debut, scoring a second round TKO last month after picking up the sport six months ago. The 6', 240-pound Balogun was a standout linebacker at the University of Oklahoma before spending three years (2010 to 2012) playing professionally for various NFL teams including the Redskins practice squad.

He will face pro debuting Percy Womack on the Jimmy Lange Boxing card Saturday, Nov. 15 at the Patriot Center.

What was the transition from football to boxing like?

MB: The transition was smooth; athletically it was easy. The process of learning has been hard. I’m getting brought up to speed; it’s been a tough learning process. Working with (trainer) Zeke (Thompson) has been great. I owe all to him on how far I’ve come in a short period of time.

Do you know Seth Mitchell, another former football star from Maryland who became a professional boxer?

MB: I know him a little bit since we have similar situations. His cousin played my team in high school, but other than that I just know that our situations in terms of football to boxing are similar.

What skills translate best?

MB: Athleticism.  If you’re a great athlete that puts you ahead of the game. Your ability to learn is key. Coming from football, it’s been easier. Watching film has been key. Football is dangerous. In boxing you’re limited who you can fight based on weight classes. In football it doesn’t matter, there are no weight classes. Football trumps boxing in athleticism.

Are they any similarities in the training regiment?

MB: Guys who come from the football life and training, if you can transition the work ethic you should be ok. Every aspect of football I transferred over. I just had to start learning the sport of boxing as opposed to starting from scratch athletically.

What are some of your best memories from your time with the Redskins?

MB: I spent six games with the Redskins (during 2002 season) Great times and a great experience. Mike Shanahan was a great coach; he loved his players. Everybody had good energy, just a slow season. Great stint. I appreciated it and the opportunity, along with all the other teams I played for during my career (49ers, Colts, Cowboys and Bills).

Sho Nuff: Nelson gets past Blencowe to retain title!

Springfield, VA (September 28, 2014) – WIBA welterweight champion Tori “Sho Nuff” Nelson overcame adversity and a tough opponent en route to a hard-fought ten round split decision over ultra-tough former titlist Arlene Blencowe Saturday evening at the ABC Sports Complex in Springfield, VA.

Nelson, who hails from nearby Ashburn, VA and is regarded as a top pound for pound fighter, came into the bout with a lot of confidence due to excellent performances of late. Blencowe however didn’t come all the way from Australia to not put up a serious fight.

In the opening round, Blencowe silenced the pro-Nelson by coming out strong and hurting Nelson early on. The 37-year-old Nelson remained calm and recovered to outbox the rugged Blencowe.

Scores were 96-94 twice for Nelson and 97-93 Blencowe.

“She really came to fight and I knew she was going to be tough because of the opposition she’s fought and her background in MMA” said Nelson, who improved to 11-0-3 with 1 win by knockout. “It was a good fight and I’m the first to admit this wasn’t my best performance but I definitely outboxed her and did enough to keep my title.”

Nelson also dismissed the notion that she may have received a hometown decision.

“I was making her miss later on and countering her well in the second half of the fight. Both my corner and I were confident that after the first few rounds, I was in control and took over down the stretch.  Keeping my title is harder than winning it was and I always have to stay two steps ahead of the competition. I’m going back to the gym tomorrow to prepare for my next fight!”

Nelson returns Saturday, November 15 at the PatriotCenter in Fairfax, VA to defend her title against an opponent to be named.

In the co-feature, Tyrieshia “Lady Tyga” Douglas captured the USBU flyweight title after blowing out Whitney Gunter in eighty two seconds. Douglas, aWashington DC native who lives and trains in Baltimore, dropped Gunter twice before referee Alisha Daniels stopped the bout.

Douglas, one of the most talented young female fighters in the world of boxing, is now 6-0 with two wins by knockout.

In undercard action, surging cruiserweight Travis “Seever” Reeves stopped Ariel Espinal in the third round, unbeaten junior welterweight Seth “Killer B” Billups overcame a knockdown to score a second round stoppage over Ty Felton, featherweight Alexandru Marin stopped Rasool Shakur in the third, light heavyweight Larry Pryor demolished Santos Martinez in the first round and junior welterweight Henry Goss drew with Anthony Dave.

Dubbed as “World Championship Boxing”, the card was promoted by Ponytail Promotions.

Founded in 2014 by respected Baltimore-based boxing businessman James Hogan, Ponytail Promotions envisions becoming one of the top promotional firms in the United States. With a keen interest in both male and female fighters, Ponytail Promotions will run a total of 10-12 shows per year in Maryland, Virginia, Washington DCand North Carolina.

Tori Nelson: A Champion’s Struggle

For Immediate Release

Ashburn, VA (September 24, 2014) – Tori Nelson is an undefeated multi-division world champion that earned her place on pound for pound lists. Based on her impressive success, most would believe she’s a full-time boxer that is well off financially like her male counterparts.

Unfortunately for Nelson, that’s far from the truth and every day is a challenge.

While virtually all of America is asleep, Nelson is up at 4:30 to get ready for her 5:30 am job as a waitress. When her shift ends at 2 pm, she returns home to sneak in a nap until her kids arrive home from school. At that time, she helps her children with homework and prepares their dinner. Around 6 pm, she goes to the boxing gym for 2-plus hours of intense training before returning home, reading the bible and going to bed. The 37-year-old Virginian repeats this four times a week.

“Being an undefeated world champion means everything to me but it doesn’t have the same meaning in the boxing world,” Nelson said honestly of her situation. “(Female fighters) have to work harder than the males do and we have to take care of our children but we don’t make anywhere near the money the men do. For some reason, we (don't receive) the same recognition and its unfortunate.”

Though some in her situation may have hung up the gloves in favor of a more traditional 9-5 job, Nelson never considered that because she’s gone through far too much to let life’s daily challenges deter her.

“I’m a single mother and I have to do this for my kids. My children have to eat and one of them is heading to college soon, so there’s a lot on my plate. It’s not easy but this struggle isn’t just for me, it’s for my children and my fans. People are also spending their hard earned money to see me fight so I have to do my part and give them a show. I owe it to them.”

On Saturday evening at the ABC Sports Complex in Springfield, VA, Nelson defends her title against tough Arlene Blencowe. On paper, Blencowe doesn’t have a big record but she’s already fought and beaten quality opponents. She’s also a successful mixed martial artist, winning four of her last five bouts in the octagon.

“I expect her to be very strong with great conditioning,” Nelson said of Blencowe. “She’s probably an inside fighter and that’s great for me because (I’d love if she) stands in the pocket! I trained very hard because I expect her to be very physically tough because of her all-around fighting background and the opponents she’s boxed. She’s traveling very far for this fight so I know she’s coming to win. My trainer told me you box a fighter and fight a boxer, so either way, I’m confident that I’ll win impressively on Saturday lord willing.”

The Nelson-Blencowe bout is for the WIBA welterweight title and serves as the ten round main event of Ponytail Promotions’ “World Championship Boxing”. The card features seven undercard matches including top prospect Tyrieshia Douglas, Seth Billups, Alexandru Marin, Travis Reeves, Larry Pryor, Edgar Torres and Henry Goss in separate bouts.

Tickets to “World Championship Boxing” start at $50 and are available by going tohttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/ponytail-promotions-wiba-welterweight-world-championship-boxing-tickets-12716538509 or calling 410-499-5361. Doors open at 7 pm and the opening bell will sound an hour.

AND STILL: Nelson retains title in Baltimore!

Baltimore, MD (July 3, 2014) – Welterweight star Tori “Sho Nuff” Nelson retained her WIBA title with a hard fought ten round decision over iron-chinned veteran Nicole Woods last Saturday evening at the Du Burns Arena in Baltimore.

Headlining Ponytail Promotions’ “World Championship Boxing”, Nelson was in a tough fight from the opening bell.

Woods, an Atlanta native who fought virtually every top fighter in or near her weight class, used rough antics with the hope Nelson would become frustrated. Nelson, a two division champion from Virginia, fought aggressively in attempt to keep Woods off and landed the more telling blows en route to a competitive victory.

Scores were 98-92 twice and 99-91.

Nelson, a fixture on the pound for pound list, improves to 10-0-3 with 1 knockout.

“I’m proud of the way Tori fought,” said promoter James Hogan of Ponytail Promotions. “Nicole Woods was a very tough opponent and she definitely showed the kind of experience you’d expect of somebody that fought the caliber of opponents she did. This wasn’t an easy fight at all but Tori showed what champions are made of.”

Delaware light heavyweight Frankie “Freight Train” Filippone lived up to his nickname, steamrolling Baltimorean Willie “For Real” Williams in less than a round. In a rematch of a 2010 bout which he won by a close decision, the southpaw Filippone decked Williams with a perfectly timed straight left. Williams showed tremendous heart in getting back to his feet before Filippone swarmed him, scoring a second knockdown and forcing a stoppage at 2:47.

With the victory Filippone improves to 16-4-1 with 3 knockouts while capturing the USBU crown in the process. Williams slips to 13-8-2 (4 KO’s).

Blue chip prospect Tyriesha “Lady Tyga” Douglas of Baltimore by way of Washington, DC passed her toughest test to date, outpointing ultra-tough Texan Cristina Fuentes over six rounds. Douglas, who came close to making the 2012 Olympic Team, displayed fantastic boxing skills and landed good shots, but Fuentes’ chin proved to be made of granite. Douglaswas clearly the better boxer, but had to work from bell to bell as Fuentes didn’t give an inch.

Two of the three judges scored the bout 60-54 while a third tally read 58-56 for Douglas. With the win, Douglasimproves to 5-0 with 1 knockout and is expected to fight for a world title in the near future.

Middleweight sensation Demond “Dbestatit” Nicholson showed yet again why he’s one of boxing’s most dynamic young fighters, stopping normally durable Cuban veteran Lester Gonzalez in two minutes and fourteen seconds. The Laurel, MD resident ended Gonzalez’ night with a devastating left hook and scored his sixth first round knockout in seven victories.

In other bouts, junior welterweight up and comer Seth Billups scored a hard fought decision over Benjamin Olinga and Travis Reeves topped Lamont Capers, while Jeremy Trussell battled to a disappointing draw against David Rohn.

“Overall this was an excellent card for the fans,” said Hogan. “I’m happy with the way everything turned out and there were a number of competitive matches. Frankie looked the best I’ve ever seen him, Tyriesha once again showed why she’s on the fast track to a world title, Demond is simply incredible and Seth showed a lot of poise. Saturday was definitely a success and Ponytail Promotions will be back to Baltimore shortly.”
