Boys And Girls From “Beat the Streets” Program, N.Y. PSAL To Compete In Between USA vs. Iran, USA vs. Russia Freestyle Dual Meets; Annual Gala To Follow At Bryant Park Grill
NEW YORK, May 10, 2013 – Student-athletes who wrestle in the Beat the Streets youth program and high school wrestlers from the New York Public School Athletic League are among eight accomplished competitors who will participate in a card of exhibition matches at Vanderbilt Hall at Grand Central Terminal as part of the “Rumble on the Rails” event on Wednesday, May 15. The four-match slate will begin at 5 p.m., in between international Olympic-class freestyle dual meets featuring USA vs. Iran at3:30 p.m. and USA vs. Russia at 6 p.m., respectively
The six boys and two girls live and attend school in The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Staten Island and Pennsylvania.
The evening concludes with the annual Beat the Streets Gala, which raises funds for the youth program. A ticket will be required for both the competition and the Gala.
“These exhibition matches are a great way to highlight the outstanding achievements that many of the Beat the Streets wrestlers have accomplished,” said Jim Fallis, executive director of Beat the Streets. “We are excited about the opportunity to showcase the youths who will compete as representative of the thousands of children who have benefited from the sport of wrestling, on the mat but more importantly in life.”
Each year, the Beat the Streets Gala is held to celebrate wrestling and raise funds for Beat the Streets Wrestling, Inc., the successful program which has provided wrestling opportunities for thousands of middle school and high school students in New York City.
The “Rumble On The Rails” is also a showcase competition as part of World Wrestling Month, which was declared by the international wrestling federation FILA.
The Beat the Streets Reception and Awards Ceremony is set for the Bryant Park Grill, 25 W. 40th St., New York City, starting at 8 p.m.

NBC Sports Network & Universal Sports to air USA vs. Iran vs. Russia Wrestling in New York,May 15
“The Rumble on the Rails” Live Dual Meet from Historic Grand Central Terminal
New York – May 9, 2013 – USA Wrestling, NBC Sports Network and Universal Sports combine to present “The Rumble on the Rails,” live wrestling featuring the national teams from the USA, Iran and Russia, from Vanderbilt Hall in historic Grand Central Terminal in New York City on Wednesday, May 15.
Fans can see the nationally-televised matches beginning with the USA vs. Iran freestyle wrestling dual meet on NBC Sports Network, 3:30-5 p.m. ET. Calling the action will be play-by-play announcer Jason Knapp, with color commentary from Olympic champion Rulon Gardner and reporter Jimmy Roberts.
NBC Sports Network’s coverage is also available on NBC Sports Live Extra – the NBC Sports Group’s live streaming product for desktop, mobile and tablets and, in most cases, on the digital platforms of participating cable, satellite, telco and other video subscription services – via “TV Everywhere," available on an authenticated basis to subscribers of these services.
Coverage continues with USA vs. Russia from 6-7:30 p.m. ET on Universal Sports. This event will feature competition in all three Olympic styles of wrestling. It is expected that some experimental wrestling rules will be used, as part of the international effort to improve the sport of wrestling. This match will also be streamed live on UniversalSports.com to authenticated users.
Knapp will handle the play-by-play of this event as well, with reporting from Roberts. The color commentator for this match is yet to be announced.
Lineups for the USA, Iran and Russian teams will be announced shortly.
“The Rumble on the Rails” is part of the annual Beat the Streets Gala, which will be held following the competition at Bryant Park Grill, and raises funds for youth wrestling programs in New York City. It is also a showcase competition as part of World Wrestling Month, which was declared by the international wrestling federation FILA.
This is the second straight year that NBC Sports Network and Universal Sports have aired a major wrestling event affiliated with the Beat the Streets Gala. In June, 2012, these networks both aired “The Grapple in the Big Apple” from Times Square in New York City. ”The Grapple in the Big Apple” featured a USA vs. Russia freestyle dual meet and the U.S. Olympic Team Wrestle-off for the 60 kg/132 lbs. position on the U.S. Olympic Team in men’s freestyle wrestling.
As part of World Wrestling Month, “The Rumble on the Rails” is an important event in the Keep Olympic Wrestling movement, an international effort to retain wrestling as a sport on the program of the 2020 Olympic Games and beyond.

U.S. and Russian lineups announced for The Rumble On The Rails in Grand Central Terminal in New York City on May 15
The lineups for the United States and Russia for “The Rumble On The Rails” at Vanderbilt Hall in Grand Central Terminal in New York City on May 15 have been released.
Three of the world’s top powers, Iran, the United States and Russia will come together in solidarity in this historic wrestling event, which is a showcase competition as part of World Wrestling Month, declared by the international wrestling federation (FILA).
The competition will be held alongside the annual Beat the Streets Awards Gala, which will be held following the competition at Bryant Park Grill. A ticket will be required for both the competition and the Gala.
There will be two dual meets as part of this spectacular event. First, the USA will battle Iran in men’s freestyle wrestling at 3:30 p.m. Later, the USA takes on Russia in a match featuring all three Olympic styles at 6:00 p.m.
Team USA is all three styles is loaded, with a number of past Olympic and World medalists, as well as nine individual champions at the recent U.S. Open in Las Vegas, Nev.
In the men’s freestyle dual against Iran, the team is led by 2009 World bronze medalist and 2012 Olympian Tervel Dlagnev at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. Past U.S. World Team members competing against Iran are Obe Blanc at 55 kg/121 lbs., Reece Humphrey at 60 kg/132 lbs. and J.D. Bergman at 96 kg/211.5 lbs.
The five 2013 U.S. Open champions in the Iran dual are Blanc, Humphrey, Bergman, Kellen Russell at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and Keith Gavin at 84 kg/185 lbs.
Rounding out the U.S. lineup is college wrestling superstar Kyle Dake at 74 kg/163 lbs. Dake became the first wrestler to win four NCAA Div. I titles in four different weight classes, competing for Cornell. He was also fourth at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials.
The men’s freestyle team against Russia is also high powered, led by 2012 Olympic champion and 2011 World champion Jordan Burroughs at 74 kg/163 lbs. and 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Coleman Scott at 60 kg/132 lbs. Burroughs, who won his third U.S. Open title this year, has a 52-0 record on the Senior level in freestyle.
Also on the team is 2010 U.S. World Team member Brent Metcalf at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. The other two competitors are top college stars, two-time NCAA champion Logan Stieber at 60 kg/132 lbs. and NCAA champion David Taylor at 74 kg/163 lbs. Stieber is a past Junior World silver medalist.
The athletes on the USA men’s freestyle team were all top college stars, accumulating 17 NCAA titles earned by nine different wrestlers.
The U.S. Greco-Roman team will have three bouts against Russia. 2012 Olympian Ben Provisor will compete at 74 kg /163 lbs. Provisor was a 2013 U.S. Open champion, along with Jordan Holm at 84 kg/185 lbs. Talented young Kendrick Sanders at 66 kg/145.5 lbs, a U.S. Open runner-up, will also wrestle.
There is one women’s freestyle bout against Russia, and Team USA sends out 2012 World silver medalist Helen Maroulis at 55 kg. Maroulis was also a 2013 U.S. Open champion and was fifth at the 2011 World Championships.
Local stars include New York native Kyle Dake plus New Jersey natives Jordan Burroughs and Kellen Russell. Dake competed for Lansing High School, Burroughs for Winslow Township High School and Russell for Blair Academy.
Russia brings a talented team in all three styles. Leading the men’s freestyle team is by 2009 World silver medalist Rasul Dzhukaev at 74 kg/163 lbs. and three-time European champion Opan Sat at 60 kg/132 lbs. Competing at 74 kg/163 lbs. is Saba Khubezhty a 2011 Ivan Yarygin Grand Prix champion, one of the world’s toughest tournaments.
The Russian Greco-Roman contingent includes 2010 World champion Ambako Vachadze at 74 kg/163 lbs. and 2010 Junior World silver medalist Asker Orshokdugov at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. The women’s freestyle athlete for Russia is 2008 Junior World silver medalist Irina Kisel at 55 kg/121 lbs.
Last week, the Iranian men’s freestyle lineup for the dual in New York, as well as a dual in Los Angeles on May 19, was announced. Included on the Iranian team is two-time World champion Mehdi Taghavi Kermani at 66 kg/145.5 lbs., 2012 Olympic bronze medalists Ehsan Lashgari at 84 kg/185 lbs. and Komeil Ghasemi at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. as well as 2011 World bronze medalist Hassan Rahimi at 55 kg/121 lbs.
Each year, the United States, Iran and Russia are among the world’s best wrestling nations. Since the IOC Executive Board recommendation that wrestling not be a core sport at the 2020 Olympic Games, these three nations have worked closely together to help support Olympic wrestling. Although their governments do not always agree, the wrestling leaders in these nations have a strong working relationship.

LA Sports Arena box office hours are weekdays from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. The LA Sports Arena box office (3939 South Figueroa St., Los Angeles, CA 90037) is located on the south side of the arena, adjacent to Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Three levels of ticket pricing are offered and start as low as $13, to $23 for mid-level seating, to $63 for seats closest to the floor.
This historic wrestling exhibition, organized by USA Wrestling and Beat the Streets-Los Angeles, Inc. and staged in cooperation with California USA Wrestling, is an important event toward sustaining momentum for the Keep Olympic Wrestling movement and the 2020 Vision: Wrestling, Keep the Dream Alive campaign.
Billed “United 4 Wrestling,” the USA vs. Iran dual meet will feature the current international freestyle wrestling rules. The event will be a showcase competition as part of World Wrestling Month, which was declared by the international wrestling federation (FILA).
Sponsoring the “United 4 Wrestling” event in Los Angeles is the Semnani Family Foundation, a Salt Lake City-based international humanitarian organization in its 20th year and founded by Khosrow Semnani, a prominent Iranian-American philanthropist.
Iran has competed in wrestling in the United States 10 times in recent years, but none of those matches took place in Los Angeles, which holds the world’s largest population of those of Iranian descent outside of Iran. Iran’s latest visits to wrestle in the U.S. included the 1995 World Championships in Atlanta, the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, the 1998 Junior World Championships in Primm, Nev., the 1998 Goodwill Games in New York City and the 2003 World Championships in New York City. In addition, the Iranian team competed in the World Cup held in the United States five times (1995 in Chattanooga, Tenn.; 1998 in Stillwater, Okla.; 1999 in Spokane, Wash.; 2000 in Fairfax, Va. and 2001 in Baltimore, Md.).
On Feb. 12, the International Olympic Committee Executive Board made a recommendation that wrestling not be a core sport at the 2020 Olympic Games. A final decision on the program of the 2020 Olympics will be made by the entire IOC in September. A worldwide effort has been launched by FILA and all 177 nations which participate in wrestling to retain wrestling as an Olympic sport.
“United 4 Wrestling” will follow on the heels of an event Wednesday, May 15 at Vanderbilt Hall in New York’s Grand Central Terminal involving the United States, Iran and Russia, three of the world’s best wrestling nations. Since the IOC announcement, these three nations have worked closely together to help support Olympic wrestling. Although their governments do not always agree, the wrestling leaders in these nations have a strong working relationship. Sports competition between the United States and Iran has been an example of how wrestling transcends politics and cultural differences.
USA Wrestling sponsored the first American sports team to compete in Iran after an absence of nearly 20 years, when a U.S. freestyle wrestling team competed in the 1998 Takhti Cup in Tehran. In total, the USA has wrestled in Iran 11 times, including the historic 1998 tour.

As part of World Wrestling Month in May, Iran will be sending a men’s freestyle team to the United States for two friendly international events. Iran has announced a strong team for these competitions, including past Olympic and World Championship medalists.
Three of the world’s top powers, Iran, the United States and Russia will come together in solidarity at “The Rumble On The Rails,” in Vanderbilt Hall in Grand Central Terminal in New York City, N.Y. on Wednesday, May 15, starting at 3:30 p.m.
The competition will be held alongside the annual Beat the Streets Awards Gala, which will be held following the competition at Bryant Park Grill. A ticket will be required for both the competition and the Gala.
Leading Team Iran is two-time World champion Mehdi Taghavi Kermani at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. Taghavi is a two-time Junior World champion and two-time Olympian.
The Iranian team will feature a pair of 2012 Olympic bronze medalists, Ehsan Lashgari at 84 kg/185 lbs. and Komeil Ghasemi at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.
Lashgari is a three-time Asian Championships champion, claiming titles in 2009, 2010 and 2012. Ghasemi was also a two-time Junior World bronze medalist (2007 and 2008).
2011 World bronze medalist and 2012 Olympian Hassan Rahimi will be wrestling at 55 kg/121 lbs. Rahimi has won gold and silver medals at the Junior World Championships and captured the title at the World Military Championships.
Also on the team is 2007 Junior World champion and 2012 Olympian Masoud Esmailpour Jouybari at 60 kg/132 lbs. He also earned a gold medal at the recent 2013 World Cup held in Tehran, Iran.
Also on the team is three-time World Cup medalist Hassan Tahmasebi at 74 kg/163 lbs. and Hamed Tatari at 96 kg/211.5 lbs., who took fifth at the 2013 World Cup.
The lineups for the United States and for Russia for will be announced very soon.
“The Rumble On The Rails,” is a private event. Tickets are required for admission and they must be bought ahead of time from www.beat-the-streets.org. No tickets will be available on site at the event. There will be no standing room only opportunities and no view from the pedestrian walkway. Anybody who would like to see this outstanding competition must plan ahead and secure a ticket prior to the competition.
This will be the fourth straight year in which a major international-style wrestling competition will be hosted as part of the Beat the Streets Gala activities.
In 2010, an all-star challenge featuring top U.S. wrestlers was held on the USS Intrepid, an aircraft carrier docked on the west side of Manhattan. In 2011, the United States defeated World champion Russia, 5-2, the first sports event ever held in historic Times Square. In 2012, another U.S. vs. Russia dual meet was held in Times Square, along with the U.S. Olympic Team Wrestle-off for the 60 kg/132 lbs. position on the U.S. Olympic Team in men’s freestyle. All of these events have been great showcases for international wrestling as well as receiving major media coverage.
Since the 1990s, Iran has competed in wrestling in the United States 10 times. This included the 1995 World Championships in Atlanta, the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, the 1998 Junior World Championships in Primm, Nev., the 1998 Goodwill Games in New York City and the 2003 World Championships in New York City. In addition, the Iranian team competed in the World Cup held in the United States five times (1995 in Chattanooga, 1998 in Stillwater, 1999 in Spokane, 2000 in Fairfax, Va. and 2001 in Baltimore).
This team from Iran will also face off against the USA in a friendly international dual meet billed “United 4 Wrestling,” on Sunday, May 19 at 2 p.m. at Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena in Los Angeles, Calif.
