DARLEYS PEREZ CAPTURES WBA INTERIM LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC (June 28, 2014) - Tonight in Dominican Republic, Gary Shaw Productions' and Thompson Boxing Promotions',  Darleys Perez (30-1, 19 KOs), captured the WBA Interim Title with a hard fought victory against Argenis Lopez (19-1, 7 KOs), who was fighting in his home country.

From the opening bell, Perez was the busier fighter as he threw more punches and landed the cleaner shots.  Lopez never really got into a rhythm and Perez took advantage of the situation by outworking him throughout the fight.  Neither fighter was seriously hurt.  Scorecards read 116-112 and 117-111 twice, all in favor for Perez.

With the win, Perez cements himself as a serious player in the lightweight division.  Many fights can be made with Perez challenging any of the world champions at 135lbs.  Promoter Gary Shaw feels Perez is on his way to a big time fight.

"This is a very big win for us," said Gary Shaw. "Thompson Boxing and GSP are very thrilled to have another world champion to promote.  There are some big fights that can be made so we'll get working on some great opportunities for Perez.  For Perez to win a decision in Lopez's hometown is amazing.  He really earned this victory with tremendous heart and grandeur."

"I knew I had to give it my all to come out here and earn a decision," said Perez. "I felt I was in control of the fight from the very beginning.  I never let up and kept coming strong with controlled pressure.  I know my promoters, Gary Shaw and Thompson Boxing have some big plans for my future, so I'm going to just enjoy this win and get back to work when I get home.  I'm happy to bring this title home to Colombia.

DARLEYS PEREZ FIGHTS FOR LIGHTWEIGHT WBA INTERIM TITLE THIS SATURDAY IN DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

Photo Credit Tom Casino / Showtime

June 25, 2014 - Gary Shaw Productions and Thompson Boxing Promotions lightweight contender, Darleys Perez (29-1, 19 KOs) will fight for the interim WBA World title against Argenis Lopez (19-0, 7 KOs) at the Sheraton Hotel in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, this Saturday June 28, 2014.

After suffering his first lost to Yuriorkis Gamboa over a year ago, Perez returned to the win column with a convincing victory against Dunis Linan back in December of 2013.  Perez who is ranked WBA #5 looks to position himself for a title shot with a victory against Lopez is rated WBA #4.

"I've had plenty of time to reflect on my defeat to Gamboa," said Perez. "I've came back with a win against Linan and my confidence is where it needs to be moving forward.  Lopez is coming to fight as am I, so I'm expecting to face a fighter who is determined to take food off my table.  I'm not going to let it happen.  I've worked too hard get back in this position and Lopez better be ready to die in the ring because I am."

"I've only fought once in the last twelve months but I've been training hard while I was on down time," Perez continued. "I'm healthy, in great shape, and I'm ready to go the distance if need be.  I'm going to Lopez's hometown so I'll be gunning for the knockout as I don't want to leave any doubt in the judges' minds."

"Darleys has a great opportunity to put himself in a great position to fight for another world title," said Gary Shaw. "If he comes out victorious, which I believe he will, then I'll be working to get him a title shot against the champion, Richard Abril.  Right now he must focus on Lopez and bring home the victory."

Mendez, a 2004 Dominican Republic Olympian now living in Miami, captured the IBF crown this past March in a rematch, destroying defending champion Juan Carlos Salgado in four rounds.

"We're going to England to begin preparation for our first title defense," Mendez said before departing Florida. "We trained there in the UK before I defeated Salgado and the result was the best. We will be in England for about 45 days with my main trainer, Lee Beard, and other members of our championship team. We will meet to establish a training and nutrition plan to have me in great physical condition right through the night of my next fight. We are dedicated to reaching our goal to retain my title. The only way we know how to achieve success is to continue working hard."

We only want to fight the best.

"I tell all boxing fans that I'm not an arrogant athlete. I believe in God and family, and give thanks for what I have with humility. However, I also want to tell everyone out there that we are ready to enter the ring with the any of the best 130-pounders in the world like Roman 'Rocky' Martinez, Ricky Burns, Takashi Uchiyama, or Mikey Garcia. Joan Guzman & Vincente Mosquera Fighting for Interim WBA super lightweight title

Guzman action
Two-time, two-division World Champion Joan "Little Tyson" Guzman

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. (February 27, 2013) - Acquinity Sports has announced that an agreement has been reached regarding an Interim World Boxing Association super lightweight title fight, featuring a pair of past world champions, Joan "Little Tyson" Guzman and Vincente "El Loco" Mosquera, tentatively scheduled for May 31 at a venue to be determined.

Guzman (33-1-1, 20 KOs), a 1996 Dominican Republic Olympian now living in Miami, suffered his first loss as a professional this past November, dropping an eighth-round technical decision to Khabib Allakhverdiev for the WBA championship (Danny Garcia is the WBA Super 140-pound champion). Guzman suffered a knee injury when he was tossed to the canvas, leading to the fight being halted by the referee Luis Pabon. Guzman's promoter, Acquinity Sports, requested an immediate rematch with Allakhverdiev, based on the mishandling of the event by Pabon. Instead, the WBA granted an Interim title fight between WBA #5 Guzman and WBA #9 Mosquera, and the winner earning a regular WBA title shot with Allakhverdiev.

"Guzman worked had in his last fight and fell short due to injury." Acquinity Sports CEO Gary Jonas said. "He is a two-time World Champion who knows what to do in the ring very well. This is a very interesting fight. I feel Guzman will win this fight and get another shot at Allakhverdiev and his world title."

Guzman captured the World Boxing Organization (WBO super bantamweight crown in 2004, stopping Agapito Sanchez in San Diego. Guzman successfully defended that title by way of a 12-round decision over Fernando Beltran.

In 2006, Guzman added the WBO super featherweight title belt to his collection by winning a 12-round decision from Jorge Rodrigo Barrios. Two title defenses against Antonio Davis and Humberto Soto, in which Guzman won by 12-round decisions, before the crafty Dominican moved up in weight class to lightweight and eventually the super lightweight division.

Including the aforementioned fighters, Guzman has beaten a virtual Who's Who of world-class fighters between 122 and 140 pounds, such as Ali Funeka, Javier Jauregui and Fabio Daniel Oliva.

"I am happy to see Guzman get another shot," Acquinity Sports Vice President of Operations Henry Rovalta added. "His fight with Allakhverdiev ended in an injury. Khabib won a split decision bit thjere were still four more rounds to go. Guzman won't be looking past Masquera . We know that he's tough but Guzman will be ready ready."

WBA #9 Mosquera (32-2-1, 17 KOs) has won his last eight fights in a row, since being knocked out for the only time in his professional career by the late Edwin Valero in 2006. Panama-native Mosquera won the WBA super featherweight championship in 2005, taking a 12-round decision from defending champion Yodsanan Sor Nanthachai in New York City's famed Madison Square Garden.

Mosquera made one successful title defense, a year later against Jose Pablo Estrella in Argentina, by way of a 12-round split decision. After losing to Valero in his following fight, Mazquera was inactive for 4 ½ years.

And serving as the co-main event that night, hard-hitting Amanda "The Real Deal" Serrano (15-1-1, 10 KOs) of Brooklyn, New York, will be squaring off against Lina Milagros Tejada of the Dominican Republic for the inaugural UBF Inter-Continental female super featherweight title.

"The UBF is very proud to be part of such an exciting event and we are proud to sanction the main event and co-main events. Boxing in the Dominican Republic is on an upswing with the recent world championship victory of Javier Fortuna and this show will feature several other rising stars from this great country," said UBF Vice President Richard Spilotro.
