JORGE "MACHITO" MAYSONET JR. TO CO-FEATURE ESPN "FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHTS" ON APRIL 5TH CARD AT THE CHUMASH CASINO

March 19, 2013 - It has been officially announced that undefeated Puerto Rican knockout specialist Jorge Maysonet Jr. (11-0, 10 KOs) will take on 26 year old southpaw Gabriel Tolmajyan (13-2-1, 3KOs) in the televised co-feature of ESPN's Friday Night Fights on April 5th, featuring Marvin Quintero (25-4, 21 KOs) vs. Ammeth Diaz (31-11, 22 KOs) in an IBF lightweight title elimination bout scheduled for 12 rounds.  The fight will take place at the Chumash Casinoin Santa Ynez, California.

The show will air live at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT on ESPN2, and will be available online through WatchESPN.com and on smartphones and tablets via the WatchESPN app.  The card will also air live on ESPN Deportes +, the new digital extension of ESPN Deportes, and will air tape delayed on ESPN Deportes Saturday, April 6, at 2 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Both fighters will enter the fight looking to make a statement in front of a national TV audience, but the spotlight shouldn't bother Maysonet Jr. too much due in part to the time he spent on Puerto Rico's National Team.  Also, Maysonet Jr. comes from a boxing family and grew up watching his father/trainer Jorge Maysonet Sr., a former Olympian who possessed a perfect knockout rating as a professional with 22KO/TKOs in 22 bouts.

Maysonet Jr. is earning a reputation for being a savage puncher as well, winning 10 of his 11 pro victories by way of KO/TKO.  It's unique to see a father and son share such a distinct attribute, but Jr. is out to separate himself and make his own name in boxing.

"I'm my father's son, yes, that's true, but I'm my own man and I want to go even further than my father. I love him being in my corner because it's reassuring, but he is honest with me and I'm able to work off of the blueprint he created.  This April 5th fight will be a good opportunity for me to show some distinction and have a new generation of fans get familiar with me," Maysonet Jr. said.

His father has trained him since he was a child and helped Jr. develop a style of his own.  Although the power may be genetics, the skill is wisdom handed down from a lifetime served in the ring and Jorge Sr. is adamant his son's talents beyond the power.

"He's a dangerous puncher, but he's more than that. Jorge Jr. has a very fan friendly style and we think it will come across very well on TV. My son can move, box, defend, and sharp shoot; he can fight on the inside and the outside. He's anxious to prove himself," Maysonet Sr. said.

Gary Shaw is also excited about Maysonet Jr. appearing on ESPN and having his fight broadcasted as the co-feature.

"This kid is going to reinstate hope for all the old school guys that think true power is lost; Jorge Jr. is a true powerhouse in the ring. Some guys pack a strong punch, but let Jorge touch you with one of his bombs and you'll be seeing stars for weeks.  I know that this performance is all it will take for the US fans to take notice because he is a fun fighter and ESPN will gladly have him back.  Once again I want to thank Doug Loughrey of ESPN for giving us the opportunity," Shaw said.

Maysonet Jr. is a member of "Team Puerto Rico", a collaboration between Warriors Boxing, Gary Shaw Productions and Universal Promotions. Their goal is to gather Puerto Rico's best boxing talent.

Usmanee: In My Heart I Want War

IBF #14-rated super featherweight contender Arash Usmanee (20-0, 10 KOs) is finishing up training at the Club de Boxe de l'Est gym in Montreal, in preparation to face  IBF #6 Rances "Kid Blast" Barthelemy (17-0, 11 KOs) on Friday, January 4, 2013, at Stage 305 in the Magic City Casino in Miami, Florida.

Presented by Warriors Boxing and Bad Dog Productions in association with the Magic City Casino, Usmanee vs. Barthelemy will serve as 12-round elimination bout for the IBF's #2 position and the main event of a show entitled "Friday Night Fights at Magic City Casino" that will also be the year's debut broadcast of ESPN's Friday Night Fights (10 PM Eastern on ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes, online through WatchESPN.com, and on smartphones and tablets via the WatchESPN app).

In the co-featured televised bout, Puerto Rican slugger Jonathan "Mantequilla" Gonzalez (15-0-1, 13 KOs) will take on Philadelphia's Derek "Pooh" Ennis (23-3-1, 13 KOs).

My training is always tip top," said the Aghani-Canadian. "I'm ready to go. I gotta cut some weight, but it's in the process. I'm taking my time with it. For me, having to cut weight is ordinary. It seems like no matter what weight I fight at, it's tough to make. I take it serious because that's a part of boxing and that's a battle every boxer should be able to overcome. And it makes the victory taste better when you have to work hard for the win."

30-year-old Usmanee is a five-time national amateur champion in his adopted home of Canada. Born in Kabul, Afghanistan, he moved to the Canadian Province of Alberta when he was only three years old, after his father was killed in a bombing.

"I moved to Montreal from Alberta. I had five fights there before I moved and things weren't looking so good. Pro boxing in Alberta is very difficult to do well at. You pretty much have to be a club fighter and I'm not a club fighter. When I got here, my manager, Douggy Berneche, and my trainer, Danielle Trepanier, and I hooked up and the rest is history."

Usmanee says he had a very wild style before meeting Trepanier, but has really refined his game with his guidance.

"My basics of boxing were lacking, let's put it that way. For many years, I was left to do what I was good at in the ring, which was to be wild and fight. I did well with it, but not at this level. You have to utilize all your assets and I wasn't doing that. So Dan said let's go back to basics and that's what we did. He took me right back to school and started from the beginning and taught me how to box. I learned a lot of the basics of boxing in the past few years. I basically became a boxer. I had the tennis ball under my chin; my legs were tied up. I looked stupid, but that's what we had to do."

Usmanee admits he can still be a little wilder than he should at times. "My style is in your face. I like to go to war, sometimes even when I shouldn't. But I've learned to utilize my boxing skills in the past couple years a lot better. My heart is a warrior. In my heart I want war. That's never going to go away. But my punches don't get wild anymore. I get wild in my heart now, but stick to what I've learned: technical aggression."

So what does he think of his opponent Barthelemy?

"Barthelemy is just like me. I do everything pretty good, nothing spectacular or amazing. I feel I'm rounded off pretty smooth. I don't do anything that's really, really bad or that stands out. He's not a bad boxer, not a bad fighter, everything he has is good, but it's not blowing my mind. It's not amazing or out of the ordinary. He's nothing I haven't faced before in the ring. He's good, tall; he's naturally southpaw, so he's got a good left side. Good boxer, good puncher. Everything is average. Nothing is spectacular. You know? That's the same with me."

Despite what he calls their equality in physical gifts, Usmanee has a definite vision for the important fight's outcome. "We're planning on stopping him late. I always want to knock out everybody, but that's what I want to do and that's what I'm planning on doing.  I'm sure he's got the same plan. That's why it'll be a great fight."

Usmanee has already won the NABA and WBC Continental Americas Championships as a professional, but says he's suffered from anonymity so far in his career. This fight may be his ticket to wider recognition.

"I don't think the world really knows much about me yet. We're hoping to change that with this fight. I don't think many Canadians even know who I am yet, but I have been getting a lot of letters from around the world about this fight. I think if I win it, the world will start to know about me."

For this fight, "Mantequilla" is training in Miami, Florida under the supervision of trainers, John David Jackson and Melvin "Chico" Ramos.

"I'm very happy with the preparation.  I'm in the best shape of my career, and at the end of the fight, the result will be a knockout" said a confident González, who is promoted by Warriors Boxing,Universal Promotions and Gary Shaw Productions.

"I have been in the gym regularly during this camp, and Jonathan has never looked better," Leon Margules, President of Warriors Boxing" said. I truly believe Jonathan is an incredible talent who the boxing world will take notice of on January 4th."

"Once again Jonathan will have another opportunity to display the kind of boxing skill that made him a terrific amateur," said Gary Shaw. "The fact that Gonzales trained outside of Puerto Rico, proves he's dedicated to this important fight on ESPN."

Putting September Behind Him, Gonzalez 100% Ready and on Weight

gonzalez_title_belt
According to his advisor, Gabby Penagaricano, Puerto Rican junior middleweight slugger Jonathan "Mantequilla" Gonzalez (15-0-1, 13 KOs) has turned a corner in his career after having the best camp of his career.

Looking to erase the memory of his lackluster, overweight performance last September against former world champion Sergei Dzinziruk, Gonzalez will appear in the co-featured bout of ESPN's Friday Night Fights 2013 debut broadcast on Friday, January 4, 2013, live from Stage 305 in the Magic City Casino in Miami, Florida  against Philadelphia's Derek "Pooh" Ennis (23-3-1, 13 KOs).

Presented by Warriors Boxing and Bad Dog Productions, in association with the Magic City Casino, the live broadcast is set to begin at 10 PM Eastern on ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes, as well as online through WatchESPN.com, and on smartphones and tablets via the WatchESPN app.

In the night's 12-round main event, IBF #6-rated Rances Barthelemy will face IBF #14-rated Arash Usmanee in a junior lightweight voluntary eliminator for the #2 contender position.

"Jonathan has been in camp in Florida for close to two full months without any interruptions," explained Penagaricano. "These have been the best preparations of his career. He'll be 100% on fight night, on weight and ready to go."

According to Penagaricano, the debacle in September taught Gonzalez a lot about the commitment required to excel at the elite level of boxing.

"He's absolutely maturing as a result of the September fight and everything that happened. I think that camp, he needed to be in Puerto Rico for personal reasons and he wasn't able to be with his trainer, and there were interruptions and distractions. Even apart from the weight, he was not 100% like he will be this time. This time has been fantastic. He definitely made the right decisions for this one. He has taken this camp very seriously. We're all seeing him maturing as a fighter and as a person. I think he realized the need to leave Puerto Rico for camp every fight, like other important fighters from here have done. He notices the difference in his level of conditioning.

Penagaricano is also happy with Gonzalez's choice to face Ennis and what it says about the 23-year-old.

"It would have been very easy to find some opponent for him to beat in one or two rounds, but in his career, he's never been like that. He's a prospect that has faced quality opposition since the beginning. His record has a lot of opponents with winning records, which is not typical anymore. The majority of opponents have been decent opposition and he has been able to knock all but one or two out. And now, even though we could have picked someone very easy for him, this opponent came across who is very decent and capable fighter and he said right away that's the fight he wants. That's just how he is. He will always choose the harder opponent. With his ability and this new mentality, I have no doubt he will become one of the great Puerto Rican fighters."

Jonathan Gonzalez is co-promoted by Warriors Boxing, Gary Shaw Productions, and Universal Promotions.

The undercard, which will be announced shortly, will feature several young local and international rising stars.

Tickets are on sale now on the Magic City Casino website www.magiccitycasino.comas well as in person at the Magic City Players Club. They are priced at $100, $75, $50 and $35.
