OSUMANU AKABA REPLACES JERRY BELMONTES AGAINST EDNER CHERRY OCT. 18 IN PHILADELPHIA ON NBCSN

Akaba
Philadelphia, PA- Osumanu Akaba, of Ghana, who had a nine-fight knockout streak snapped in his most recent fight, steps in against Edner Cherry in a 10-round junior lightweight contest on Saturday, Oct. 18, at the 2300 Arena in South Philadelphia.
Akaba replaces Jerry Belmontes, of Corpus Christi, TX, who injured his right wrist in training last Thursday.
The Cherry-Akaba bout and the Steve Cunningham-Natu Visinia heavyweight 10-rounder will be televised live by NBCSN on its popular Fight Night series beginning at 9 pm (ET).
While more recognizable fighters balked at fighting Cherry on short notice, the 34-year-old Akaba, now living in Tuscaloosa, AL, jumped at the opportunity. He had been ready and waiting for any opportunity when he got the call last Friday to fight Cherry.
Akaba, who turned pro in 2000 as a super bantamweight (122 pounds), is now a full-fledged lightweight (135) at 5-foot-10. His record is 24-6, 19 K0s. He has won three minor championships - WBC International Featherweight Title, WBA Pan African Featherweight Title, WBO Africa Super Featherweight Title.
One of Akaba's four losses was a 12-round decision defeat in a competitive fight in 2008 in London to Ricky Burns, who later won the WBO world lightweight title. Another 12-round decision setback came in 2005 in South Africa against Jeffrey Mathebula, who went on to take the IBF world super bantamweight title.
In his only fight in the US, Akaba dropped an eight-round decision to Bahodir Mamadjonov, of Uzbekistan, who is 17-1, 11 K0s. Prior to that match last August, Akaba had scored nine consecutive knockouts. He has been stopped only once, early in his career.
There was some good news, however, for Cherry, who moved up to No. 15 in the WBC world ratings at 130pounds. He is No. 11 in the IBF.

Goodwins sign the Turkish Sensation Tasocak; Due to Debut October 11th at York Hall

Steve Goodwin today unveiled his latest signing the Turkish sensation known as “The Boss” Jemali Tasocak.

Tasocak has had two professional fights in Ghana where he won both comfortably and has signed a 3 year deal with Goodwin.

Steve Goodwin “Jemali is the type of exciting young talent we are now signing. We have connections with both Turkey and Ghana and this will enable us to develop signings from these countries. Richard Commey from Ghana won the Commonwealth title on our show.”

He continued, “We have set up a training camp in Turkey and are are taking some of our boxers out there (at our expense!) on 15th September. We pay our boxers flights and accommodation so they just need to turn up with their cases. Jemali has seen we are doing this and wants to be a part of this. Jemali will be campaigning at Lightweight and his exciting style will make him a massive crowd Pleaser. He will be trained by the up and coming Rod Julian at RJ’s Gym in Chingford, London.”

Jemali said “This was a no brainer for me. The Goodwin’s stood out for me as the most active promotional group that are going places and I am looking forward to my first fight for them on October 11th.”

RICHARD COMMEY STARS IN SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER ON JULY 13TH

Steve Goodwin (Goodwin Promotions) and Olivia Goodwin (Goodwin Main Events) are planning a bumper
end of season with two Saturday night shows at York Hall in the space of two weeks.

Olivia stages her best ever card on 13th July in an event entitled 'Saturday Night Fever'.  Olivia promotes this alongside Streetwise Promotions from Ghana.

Top of the bill is Ghanaian star and IBF African champion Richard Commey (15-0, all by stoppage) against former Commonwealth featherweight champion Paul Truscott. The fight is a final eliminator for the Commonwealth lightweight title which is being contested on the same night by Derry Mathews and Tommy Coyle.

Commey says: "I have total respect for Truscott but the one I want is Derry Mathews. His manager said I was not
good on Twitter and I want to show him by beating his boy. First however I have to fight Paul who is a quality fighter and I am looking forward to the challenge."

This is the first time for many years that an African boxer has being promoted by a UK promoter and treated as the home fighter. The Goodwins alongside Michael Amoo-Bediako of Streetwise have made this happen.

Chief support is a heavyweight title bout over ten rounds for the British Masters belt where Brixton banger Ian Lewison takes on former conqueror Colin Kenna. Lewison, fresh from a controversial semi-final exit in Prizefighter,
has his first ten round contest against Kenna who in his last fight beat Lewison.

"I am going to hurt and punish Kenna," said Lewison. "The fight will be a destruction. I will be at my lightest and fastest ever. Don't blink as Kenna hits the canvas".

A third big fight sees the skilful Philip 'Quicksilver' Bowes (6-0) compete for the Masters light-welterweight crown against Joe Elfidh (7-3). Bowes is one of boxing's rising stars and Elfidh is a tough Yorkshireman who is
remembered for his fight with Scott Harrison.

Ricky Boylan competes for the International Masters Bronze title over eight rounds against an international opponent yet to be confirmed.

The card sees the return of Tom 'The Bomb' Dallas in a six round International contest. This is Dallas' first contest since signing a promotional deal with
the Goodwins. Exciting light-heavyweight Miles Shinkwin (3 <<...>> -0) has his first eight round contest.

Plus, as is always the case with a Goodwin card, many more bouts to be added.

Two weeks earlier on 29th June Olivia's father Steve Goodwin stages a 13-fight card headlined by two Masters title fights.

Prizefighter finalist Hari Miles defends his British Masters cruiserweight title against 'The Emperor' Menay
Edwards. Edwards decided not to go into Prizefighter as he is opting for a career build rather than instant money in a three round format. Miles has been taunting Edwards on social networking sites after Edwards won their
first clash with Miles claiming late notice as the reason for the loss.

Edwards said: "H Bomb is one bomb that never detonates. He can't punch, has a big mouth and I will shut him
up once and for all on 29 June. He needs to go back to being a journeyman. Thats his level!"

Exciting Goodwin middleweight Lee 'The Banjo' Markham defends his British Masters middleweight title against Alistair Warren (8-4-2).  Lee is marching on a career path that will eventually lead to bigger title honours.

'The Rematch' features former British title challenger Michael Lomax against former Commonwealth champion Bradley Pryce over eight rounds. Pryce won their first encounter in Wales and Lomax wants revenge.

What could be fight of the night sees 'Smoking' Joe Mullender (4-0) take on former Southern Area champion Gary Boulden over eight rounds. This will be one all out war and not to be missed.

The undercard features the debut of former professional footballer Leon McKenzie who competes at super-middleweight and the debut of two future champions in heavyweight Dominic Akinlade and light-welterweight 'Showstar' Sohail Ahmad who has been working with Yassine el Maachi.

Another barnstormer sees Southern Area super-featherweight champion Michael 'Chunky' Devine take on the Belarusian banger Andrei Hramyka (10-6-2). Hramyka has won nine of his ten victories inside the distance and Devine is susceptible to a punch as when floored in the first round by Dan Naylor in his Southern Area title victory.

The Goodwin team brings fantastic value to small hall boxing - evenly matched bouts offering value and excitement.

Tickets are available at £100 VIP reserved ringside (including free private bar), £60 reserved ringside and £35 unreserved.

There are discounts if you buy tickets for both shows before 3rd June.

RICHARD COMMEY AIMS TO MAKE UK FANS TAKE NOTICE

HE PROMISES 12th KNOCKOUT IN A ROW ON 7th JULY

Sensational African prospect Richard Commey makes his UK debut on 7th July at York Hall Bethnal Green when he takes on former Commonwealth title challenger Kris Hughes in an 8 round bout on the Olivia Goodwin Goodwin Main Events dual title bill.

Current Champion of Ghana Commey has 11 wins all by knock out and is aiming to make in 12 from 12.

Many boxers from Ghana lack the backing to progress their careers and end up being fed as journeymen but this will not happen with Commey.

Commey is a product of the world famous Bukom area which has produced some of the most renowned African fighters such as Joshua Clottey, Ike Quartey and legendary hall of famer Azumah Nelson.

Richard was spotted by UK manager Michael Amoo-Bediako in August 2010 whilst Michael was there with his son Michael jr competing in an amateur tournament.

Michael was so impressed that he signed Richard immediately and since then Richard has gone from strength to strength culminating in winning the Ghanaian national lightweight title in December 2011.

The Streetwise team headed by Amoo-Bediako has brought Richard along with his mentor and trainer Carl Lokko to the UK to gain some valuable experience in fighting abroad. They will be based at the Pro SW gym in Loughton training alongside head trainer Archie Dublin and the Streetwise Boxers.

Richard is aiming for the Commonwealth title in the next 12 months and with Amoo-Bediako and the Goodwin promotional team behind him it will be refreshing to see this young Ghanaian have all the opportunities provided to him.

OSSIE DURAN LOOKING FOR BIG FIGHTS

NEWARK, NJ (June 18, 2012) Middleweight contender Ossie Duran is looking for a breakthrough fight and has his eye set on a potential rematch with Fernando Guerrero.
Duran and Guerrero met on October 10, 2009 that ended up with Guerrero winning a majority decision in his hometown in Salisbury, Maryland.

In that fight, Duran scored a knockdown in the tenth and final round for which there was controversy.

“He was knocked down and he had to be helped back in the ring” with seconds left, said Duran’s advisor Vinny LaManna.

“Look at the scores and you can tell who really won that fight”, continued LaManna when referring to the tallies that read 97-93, 96-94 and 95-95 in favor of Guerrero.

“its definitely a fight we want at this point

Duran of Paterson, New Jersey via Accra, Ghana has maybe the most deceiving record in the sports as he is 26-10-2 with ten knockouts.

He has fought some of the best in Guerrero, James Kirkland, Eromesele Albert, and Brandon Gonzales. In his last bout he lost yet another controversial decision to Avtandil Khurtsidze in Russia for the WBC Silver Championship.

“Some of the bouts he clearly won and got screwed on the decision. He clearly beat Gonzales on SHOBOX and he fought great in Russia. Now we are back to the drawing board and weather it’s a Guerrero or someone like Kelly Pavlik or Lucian Bute, Ossie will be ready for the challenge and perform at a high level”.
