Goodwin Boxers now have their own gym to use in Turkey

Following a fantastic inaugural training camp in Turkey, Goodwin Boxing are proud to announce that they have acquired a training gym in Turkey for their boxers.

“This is something we have worked on for a long time but we wanted to do a trial run before making the announcement. Last week former Southern Area Champion Menay Edwards, Kevin Greenwood, Martin Hillman, Jose Lopes, Jordan Joseph and Diego Burton spent six days under the watchful eye of coach and Head of Boxing Operations Kevin Campion running in the mountains at altitude and working in both fitness and boxing gyms.

At the end of the stay Steve Goodwin made a financial offer and Goodwin’s Gym in Turkey was born.

“We will be running our own in house training camps for our boxers” said Goodwin “Our boxers and their trainers are able to use the facilities whenever they want throughout the year. Our next in house training camp will be early 2015 and some more boxers will be coming out to train again and spar with some of the best boxers in Turkey.”

“This is just a part of what we want to be able to do for our boxers and we are working on several other projects which will mean that our boxers will have the same opportunities as those preparing for major world title fights.”

Head of Boxing Operations Kevin Campion finished by saying “The boys last week were a pleasure to train and I can see us spending more and more time with our boxers in Turkey to give them ideal preparation for upcoming fights”.

EDWARDS BRANDS MILES "A COWARD" BUT GETS TITLE OPPORTUNITY

London cruiserweight Menay 'The Emperor' Edwards had frustration turn to excitement following a very eventful scenario in the lead up to his first title fight on 29th June.

Edwards was scheduled to fight defending champion Hari Miles for the British Masters title on the Steve Goodwin promoted 'Trail of Destruction' show at York Hall.

Edwards, who has beaten Miles before, was suffering abuse and insults on twitter from his rival. Fed up with the insults, Edwards asked promoter Goodwin to make the fight. Goodwin arranged the fight and agreed terms with Miles’ manager Carl Greaves only for the boxer to announce on Twitter he was not going through with the fight, claiming he was not being paid enough.

“Total bull****!" raged Edwards. “I have found out that Miles was being paid more than he got when defeating [Jon] Ibbotson for the title. It's just a lame excuse from a boxer that spends his life insulting other boxers and calling them out claiming he is the most avoided cruiserweight in Britain.

"He spent months insulting Tony Conquest, others and me. I want the boxing world to know this Miles is a total fraud and a coward. I don’t ever want to read or hear him disrespecting other boxers again. He is a disgrace to the profession and he is the one running and doing the avoiding. What warrior vacates the only thing he has ever won or is ever likely to? I want nothing to do with Miles again, as he would just pull out and run again.”

What was frustrating for Miles turned to joy when Goodwin secured a Southern Area cruiserweight title shot on the same day against former light-heavyweight champion JJ Ojuederie.

“Miles being a coward has turned to my advantage,” said Edwards “JJ is a credit to the sport unlike Miles and I am looking forward to the challenge.”

There is also a quality undercard featuring some well know boxers and some exciting up and coming fighters.

Controversial Heavyweight “The War Machine” Larry Olubamiwo makes his return after having his 4 year drugs ban reduced. Larry takes part in a 6 round International contest.

'The Rematch' features former British title challenger Michael Lomax against former Commonwealth champion Bradley Pryce over eight rounds. Pryce won their first encounter in Wales and Lomax wants revenge.

What could be fight of the night sees 'Smoking' Joe Mullender (4-0) take on former Southern Area champion Gary Boulden over eight rounds. This will be one all out war and not to be missed.

The undercard features the debut of former professional footballer Leon McKenzie who competes at super-middleweight and the debut of two exciting prospects in heavyweight Dominic Akinlade and light-welterweight, 'Showstar' Sohail Ahmad who has been working with Yassine el Maachi.

There are also many other fights on the undercard.

The Edwards v Ojuederie, Mullender v Boulden and Lomax v Pryce clashes are all well-matched fights where predicting the winner is not easy. This is what the Goodwin shows are about bringing top quality fights where you do not know who is going to win, value and excitement.

Tickets are available at £100 VIP Reserved ringside (including free private bar) £60 reserved ringside and £35 unreserved.

Edwards looks to start his empire with a British title

Exciting cruiserweight Menay ‘The Emperor’ Edwards looks to get his career back on track when he takes on former British champion Shane McPhilbin at York Hall on March 9th.

Edwards (8-2) lost his last contest on points after a war against current WBO International champion Neil Dawson in a fight which saw both boxers on the floor.

Edwards subsequently split from his management team and feels rejuvenated after signing up with the up and coming Goodwin Promotions stable.

“With the support of Steve Goodwin’s team I have no doubt that 2013 is going to be a massive year. I am looking for a British title shot towards the end of the year.”

The York Hall show is a typically packed Goodwin card, featuring ten fights, including a Southern Area super-featherweight title bout between Luton’s Michael ‘Chunky' Devine and Dan Naylor.

Also featured is a bout entitled ‘Revenge for the Sparta’ in which exciting middleweight Lee ‘The Banjo’ Markham, fresh from two televised stoppage wins, boxes Jamie Boness over six rounds. Boness stopped Markham's gym mate Kevin Greenwood inside a round in 2012 and Lee wants revenge for the Sparta Gym.

Former Prizefighter winner Michael Lomax makes his return to the ring after his reversal last time against Matthew Hatton. Lomax, like Edwards, has since signed a deal with the Goodwin team and takes part in a six-round welterweight contest against ultra-tough Arvydas Trizno from Lithuania.

The impressive ‘Smokin’ Joe Mullender has won three out of three contests and takes on Latvian number one Jevgenijs Andrejevs over six-threes at middleweight. Andrejevs has won two of his last three fights.

Super-middleweight Miley Cash makes his eagerly awaited professional debut in a four-round contest. Miley takes on Irishman Joe Rea, a semi-finallist in Prizefighter last year. It shows how confident the Cash team are in taking such a hard contest for his debut.

Formidable TRAD TKO Winning Streak Falters, As Mitchell And Edwards Lose

The formidable winning streak, of the fighters from the famous TRAD TKO Boxing Gym in Canning Town, came to a shuddering halt this past weekend, after both Kevin Mitchell and Menay Edwards lost.

Just two weeks previously English Light Middleweight Champion Erick ‘The Eagle’ Ochieng successfully defended his crown, Ian Bailey and Danny ‘Cassius’ Connor secured Southern Area titles, as well as a brace of great wins by rising stars Wadi ‘Machoman’ Camacho, Tom Baker and Charlie Hoy.

Last week was almost as successful, with Billy Joe Saunders successfully defending his Commonwealth Middleweight crown, whilst gym mates Gary Corcoran, Billy Morgan, Frankie Buglioni, Ediz Hussein, Joel McIntyre and Tommy Watson kept their unbeaten records intact.

The only blot on the copy book coming by way of Peter McDonagh being on the wrong side of a points decision, even though he dominated most of the Southern Area Welterweight title bout, against ‘home fighter’ Bradley Skeete.

With 13-1 winning ratio, already in September, in the bag, the TRAD TKO crew were looking forward to another highly successful weekend, with Kevin Mitchell challenging Ricky Burns for his WBO World Lightweight title, as well as six of their young guns in action on Sunday.

In the build up to Mitchell-Burns everyone see it as a very, very close fight, with an the experts putting their weight equally behind Kevin and Ricky. However, come fight night things didn’t go according to plan.

After a fairly even first round Ricky began to exert his authority in earnest, by backing Kevin up at will and picking him off with big rights.

By round four Kevin’s challenge was already beginning to look decidedly rocky, then the unexpected happened, as Ricky landed a sweet short left hook to send Kevin to the canvas.

Kevin kept his head and stayed on one knee until the count of eight, before rising. When he did though, Ricky was over him like a rash, and inevitably sending the Dagenham Destroyer to the deck once more.

This time Kevin jumped up in an instant. With just ten seconds or so to until the end of the round Ricky didn’t waste a second, instantly firing a salvo of big shots to send Kevin back onto the ropes. The Scot’s onslaught continued, but as there was no reply from Kevin, it came as no surprise that, Referee Terry O’Connor stepped in to save him from more punishment, even though there was only six seconds left on the clock.

“Well the run of form at the TRAD TKO had to come to an end eventually, it’s just a shame that it had to happen with our stalwart, Kevin Mitchell.

What can I say about the fight, I thought it was an even first round and I just thought Ricky looked bigger and stronger.

I couldn’t really put my finger on what went wrong with Kevin, it seems he just kept loading up with the left hand and Ricky was finding the answer with the right hand.

It wasn’t the right hand that actually did the damage, it was a short clip left hook that seemed to take Kevin’s senses away.

They were both giving it the bravado thing, banging their chests. When that happened I thought we were in for a cracking fight.

Where does Kevin go from here, It’s entirely up to Kevin. He’s lost to a very good fighter, who rightly so people are talking about being the number one Lightweight in the world, so it’s not the end of the world as far as Kevin is concerned, now the ball’s in his court, hopefully he carries on, I’d like to see him carry on as he’s got plenty left in the tank.”

With Kevin’s loss it was down to the youngsters from the gym to get the superb winning streak back on track, at Miranda Carter’s ‘Sunday Best’ event at York Hall.

However things didn’t get off to a particularly smooth start, after young George Jupp was forced to pull out at the weigh in.

In the ring things looked a lot brighter, with Ben Doughty trained Frankie Monkhouse securing his second pro win with an excellent 39-37 points win over Danny Dontchev.

Frankie certainly impressed, boxing cleverly behind the jab, as well as sending the highly durable Dontchev to the canvas, in the first, with a cracking body shot.

Next up was former World #2 Amateur Areti Mastrodouka securing her third straight win as a pro, with a sensational first round stoppage of Gabriella Vicze.

Alec Wilkey’s newest charge, Eren Arif, received a baptism of fire on his pro debut, as his opponent was the awkward, yet highly entertaining, Johnny Greaves.

Eren kept his cool, as Greaves played to the crowd, and boxed beautifully to secure a tidy points win.

Already with two of his charges with solid wins under their belts, Alec Wilkey was in jubilant mood when young Brett O’Callaghan secured a third, with a shutout 40-36 points win over the highly experienced Duncan Cottier.

The final fight of the night featured Derek Grainger trained Menay ‘The Emperor’ Edwards in what was deemed to be a warm up for a shot at Tony Conquest’s WBO intercontinental Cruiserweight crown later this year.

With both Menay and his opponent, Neil Dawson, having very similar records, it was always known this was going to be a true 50/50 battle, but no one expected the all out war that ensued.

The pair of warriors seemed determined to stand their ground and slug it out. Menay got sent to the canvas in the first, Dawson hit the deck in the second. There could easily have been more trips to the canvas, as each got rocked on numerous occasions, but neither did.

At the end of the six hard fought rounds Rotherham’s Dawson just edged it, to take victory by a 58-56 margin.

With four out of five wins on the Sunday, Johnny was a little more positive in outlook as he spoke about the night’s action featuring the TRAD TKO fighters.

“On Sunday we started off with Frankie Monkhouse, Frankie put in a good result against Danny Dontchev, not the easiest person in the world to fight but Frankie stuck to his game plan and won the fight quite well.

We were a bit disappointed with the opponent that was brought over for Areti, but you can’t blame the agent as you can only go by the record and we thought it was the rights fight, but she was very, very poor.

Like I said to Areti it isn’t who you fight but how you beat them, and she beat her really well, stopped her very well with some great shots and the referee was right stopping the contest when he did.

Then we had young Erin Arif, who put in a good performance against Johnny Greaves, Greavsy was being his normal self, showboating and hitting him where he shouldn’t be hitting him, which is Ok as these are all the things you need to learn when your first out. He made a good fight of it, it was one of the best fights of the night to be honest with you.

We then go on to our Brett O’Callaghan against Duncan Cottier, Duncan played all his old tricks again.

Again another great learning fight for young Brett, he’s only just turned twenty years old so got a bright future in front of him and made it win number four at the weekend.

Then we’re on to Menay Edwards, who after a fantastic fight got a disappointing result. He decided to take himself to the ropes and go toe to toe with him.

I spoke to him last night and said to him that he’d gone back to the old Menay Edwards style that I didn’t like and this played into the other kid’s hands.

Value for money, what a fight, it was the best fight of the night, but you don’t want too many of them though.”

So there you have it, after three weekends of extreme action, the TRAD TKO team went from a magnificent 6-0 margin in week one, to an impressive 13-1 on week two and ending with a, still highly respectable, 17-3 winning ratio.

With the only event of this coming weekend, that was to feature the gym’s fighters, being canceled it will be October before the formidable TRAD TKO juggernaut gets rolling again.

TRAD TKO Fighters Head Up May 20th London Mega Show

Over the past few years Miranda Carter has been quietly pioneering a series of Sunday afternoon events at York Hall in Bethnal Green. In the past these events have featured maybe six or seven bouts, however her latest offering, which takes place this coming Sunday, is far from low key affair, instead entering the mega event zone with a fourteen bout card.

The event, titled ‘Rolling Thunder’, heavily features fighters from Johnny Eames’ famous Canning Town fight factory - the TRAD TKO Boxing Gym.

Originally the event was to feature just three of the East London trained stars but after Butch Lesley had to withdraw from the original headlining British Masters title bout with Menay Edwards, this was increased to five, including the new headlining bout, a rematch between Hackbridge, Surrey’s Danny Connor and Ely, Cambridgshire’s Tyler Goodjohn, this time for the British Masters Welterweight title.

Last time these two met, back in March last year, Goodjohn came out on top, however things may be a little different this time around, as Connor has really turned his career around, racking up five top class wins out of six outing. Goodjohn on the other hand has had just two wins out of three, and the loss was a brutal knockout dished out by the forceful hands of Vinny Woolford in November last year.

Heading up the support is Connor’s TRAD TKO gym mate, former British Cruiserweight Champion Leon ‘Solid’ Williams, who will be making his first appearance since the shock loss of his coveted Lonsdale belt back in
January.

Surprisingly Williams isn’t looking for an easy fight, to ease himself back, oh no the man nicknamed ‘Solid’ is so determined to get back on the Championship trail that he has elected to face Lithuania’s #1 ranked Remigijus Ziausys.

Also on the support card is rising Cruiserweight star Menay Edwards, who will be making his first outing under the TRAD TKO banner. Edwards, whose record stands at 7-1, will be looking to impress, against unbeaten
Lawrence Bennett, in order to earn the right for a tilt at the Southern Area title later this year.

Making his debut at the event is yet another TRAD TKO newbie, Eric ‘Congo Warrior’ Mokonzo, who will be receiving a baptism of fire at the hands of Hayes hardman Darren McKenna.

Former World amateur #2 female boxer Areti Mastrodouka is the fifth of the TRAD TKO squad that will take part in the ‘Rolling Thunder’ event. In her debut, at Miranda Carter’s March 2012 event, Mastrodouka put on a stylish
display to beat Kristine Shergold by a 60-55 points margin.

On the 20th May, 36 year old Mastrodouka is set to face a much younger opponent in 20 year old Latvian #1 ranked featherweight Julija Cvetkova.

Of the non-TRAD TKO contingent, the pick of the bunch sees Epsom, Surrey’s unbeaten Middleweight J.M. Coyle face a stern test, as he takes on Wickford, Essex hardman Danny Brown. Coyle may have the unbeaten record but Brown will be no walk over especially as he’ll be looking to extend his excellent run of a win and a draw against previously unbeaten opponents so far in 2012.

Another potential cracker sees two unbeaten fighters, Light Welterweights Luke Fowler and John Brennan, battle it out.

Also on the card are unbeaten foursome, Upminster Lightweight Ryan Taylor, Stratford Super Middleweight Scott Hartley, Luton Light Welterweight Danny Mulhern and Kensington Middleweight Daley Ojuederie, who will be joined by debutantes, Bexleyheath Lightweight Jack Dishart, Middleweight Alex McKay and Tilbury Welterweight Matt McCarthy - who are all against yet to be named opponents.

Tickets for Rolling Thunder, featuring the TRAD TKO five, Danny Connor, Leon Williams, Menay Edwards, Eric Mokonzo or Areti Mastrodouka, at York Hall, Bethnal Green in London on Sunday 20th May 2012 are priced Ł35, Ł45 and Ł65 are available on line at www.tkoboxoffice.com or in person at the TRAD TKO Boxing Gym, Gillian House, Stephenson Street, Canning Town, London E16 4SA
